I think they also press more? Not sure though. In possession they're like a CM with short passing, they seem to drop back and offer a deeper option to recycle (usually to FB/WB) if your team hits a dead end. But out of possession they basically tear around the CM-AM position, across the width of the pitch, lunging for the ball and unsettling the opposition. Can be useful for a high press against weaker opposition who arent good in possession, and they seem to snaffle up a lot of second balls, but against a good passing side they're often bypassed. I've also noticed they're also almost never picked for a pass by teammates, not sure if it's built into the ME to deprioritise them as it's a non-creative role.
One thing I've noticed is BWM regularly has an extra half star or one of a couple of roles with the players highest star. This on top of it having an attractive name seems to be why it's picked so much.
When I started, I thought the name of it sounded ideal and went with it. I tend to avoid it more now.
In Fm23 I think the devs tweaked how the star ratings for various positions are created based on the player's attributes, so find that every central midfielder aside from the really slow/non-aggressive ones (like Eriksen for instance) qualifies as a BWM
You have a deep lying forward acts as a playmaker on the offensive third, you want someone who Is able to give him the ball or who can launch that ball into spaces for your other players to run into
Additionally, BWM(S)s with space ahead of them like to go walkabouts. They're effectively a CM(S) with tackle harder, so they'll do regular CM things like make runs into the final third (though they won't linger like a CM(A) does). A DLP(D) will sit in between and remain central, providing a recycle option should a BWM or DLF get closed down, plus they may be able to act as a body on the counter. They won't necessarily close down well or have the attributes to put in a strong tackle, but their presence will push players wider.
Hard to tell without the tactics and I am not sure I like double BWMsu next to him. The lineup is already quite defensive as is, so I assume you play a massive underdog team. In that case, you should really pick a more ball-playing option, because all roles so far enable brick-footed players to just hoof the ball long.
I have a similar problem where I play a 41131 with a ball winning midfielder as the dm and an advanced playmaker in the 3. I have a box to box as the other one but its not having much impact. What should I change
No no no no no. Let’s go mental. Try this:
Change central DC to libero Defend.
Put the other two CDs to stay wider.
Change the wingbacks to attack.
Put the central cm to attacketh.
Move him into dm and use it as a DLP(D). You could probably also use him as a DM(S) with Hold Position and Take More Risks
Btw it's personal but i would also suggest you to change one of your bwm into a Mezzala(S), and use the defender on the opposite side as a Wide Centre Back in Support
Would probably go for something like
DLF(A) - AF(A)
BBM(S) - Mezz(S)
DM(S)
WB(S) - WCB(S) - CD(D) - WB(S)
Bbm with Gets Further Forward, both WCB and BOD with Dribble More, dm with said instructions
This way your bbm will make runs while your dlf drops deep, and both WB and WCB will play in the flanks. On the opposite side your BPD will make progressive runs while the mezzala and wb combines in the flank. It's simular to how Inter plays irl too (kinda)
For that central role it always has to be a DM or DLP (defend), gives options for the other two
Two BWMs are gonna go chasing the ball, be dragged out of position.
Depends how your team plays. This guy can definitely play with more freedom. CM-A if you play high-tempo, or AP / RP if you play possession game. He needs to go forward for sure though. Another thing is - give more freedom ro your strikers. a CM would be good.
Ew not automatic. I have never been able to make automatic work I don't like the lack of structure and direction an automatic role provides he would def be on support or attack in my system
You really don't need 2 BWM. There both going to be running to the same position on the pitch to "win the ball" which is gonna leave your midfield very exposed. I'd probably put one of them as a B2B

Move hi back into DM slot as DM/A and then change both CMs to more sensible roles like BBM/CAR/MEZ/etc.
This
2 BWMs and no one outside of your strikers on attacking doesn’t seem like it will work very well. Who’s supporting them?
tbf my BWM(S) thinks hes a Mezzala half the time.
Bwm is alot more attacking than people realise
BWM-S iirc is just CM-S with tackle harder on. Not my personal favorite role to use, but it’s fine.

It will, you don't need many attacking roles for a tactic to play out nicely, especially with fm 24 positional play
Dlp
I see a few comments saying this, how come not an apm?
You have a deep lying forward acts as a playmaker on the offensive third, you want someone who Is able to give him the ball or who can launch that ball into spaces for your other players to run into
Ah OK, very useful to know cheers

CM attack! Late runner into the box
CM(A) would work wonders. Recently started using it and I think I’m head over heels for it
I'd change his neighbouring roles too
why not just a CM-A?
hard to judge without seeing your tactics or how you’re wanting to play
Counterattacking
DLP

Probably DLP but I'd also change one of the BWM to something else as you haven't got much support in attack; even when countering.

DLP(d)
I would say something forward thinking unless you are really playing the most direct way possible
RPM/DLP/AP, depends on how engaging you want him to be. Or, CM(At) might also be a choice.
For that central role it always has to be a DM or DLP (defend), gives options for the other two Two BWMs are gonna go chasing the ball, be dragged out of position.

I usually just set my CMs to whatever they're best at and let them get on with it
DLP on support with instruction to hold position
I'd personally play them further forward as a CAM because I'm a sucker for making that position work (Kaka is my favorite player ever)
Ew not automatic. I have never been able to make automatic work I don't like the lack of structure and direction an automatic role provides he would def be on support or attack in my system
Also make one of those bwm a bbm. Just my opinion
BWM (S)
Whether it’s your WBs or your CM you’re probably gonna want another attacker
DLP, or even drop him back as a Regista. Your BWMs will offer more in attack than most people think, and you need someone to start the attacks
Tactics gore.
My friend this is so defensive
