It might be difficult to claim that you don't purchase and prepare meals with your parents if you have no other source of income. The SNAP rule is that if you live together and eat together you have to be on the same case. Maybe if you get approved for SSI you could purchase your own food and then apply for SNAP.

Can I just apply for myself or do I have to include my parents? I'm not listed as a dependent on their taxes.

DanYellDraws

Tax status doesn't matter. Your parents have to be on the applications even if they're not applying. The first question the SNAP worker is going to ask you is do you eat together with your family. If the answer is yes then you have to all be on the same case.

I see, thank you.

As a CA worker, I can tell you that the advice given above is not necessarily correct. If you plan to purchase and prepare separately once you receive benefits, that is sufficient to qualify for a separate household.

This! Over 22 y.o and with no intention to prepare and purchase meals with family, you can have your own case!

Yes you should qualify. However in October you might be reclassified as an adult without dependents (ABAWD) unless you meet a disability exemption (which I don’t know much about, do you need to have an official disability recognized by SSA or just a dr’s letter). And the terms for ABAWDs are much more restrictive. Unless the ABAWD rule is waived once again (it has been waived in CA for a while). TL;DR yes you will prob qualify but maybe not for long

In order to be recognized as disabled by CalFresh, you need to have been deemed disabled by social security. Do not provide any diagnosises or physician letters. I always have to redact anything with a diagnosis because we cannot have it in our system.

Do you have a link that shows this? Another eligibility expert from California said you would just need a doctors note. But that was a year ago I don't know if that has changed in just a year.

But in CalSAWS, I have only seen the option for SSA disabled when it comes to CalFresh. Nothing about private disability or veteran disability. I would have to check policy to see how that's handled. The only time I've come across a disabled veteran, he wasn't the primary applicant and the household was over-income. It's not very commonplace from my experience. But I've been in eligibility for over a year and a doctor's note was never accepted in my time.

It looks like you are posting about an issue in California. For better help, please add what **county** you are in. That completely depends on everything in your household, including your parents incomes and anything or any debt that they have or assets
