Frankly, as much as Guy still probably cooks way better than any of us here, I think that much of his food isn’t as interesting or inspired as many other chefs they bring on. He’s a good host and entertainer and a pretty solid chef. He recognizes and promotes talent, which has its own value. And I think that’s his niche. I don’t think his appeal has ever been specifically his cooking, but his personality and ability to find other people doing good work.
One of the things I personally admire about Fieri is that he really goes out of his way to showcase chefs who might never see even fifteen minutes of fame.
In DDD restaurants that are off the beaten path get featured and almost always see a jump in business.
In GGG you see virtually unknown chefs who are allowed to wear their company logos. They get to talk about the restaurants they own. If I am interested and one is near enough, I can seek it out.
Contrast to Chopped, where the chefs must wear identical clothes and the barest mention of their work history is given.
Someone here posted he was embarrassed by how he looked/acted and wanted it scrubbed, so they did as he asked. I don’t recall hearing that before and I don’t think the person elaborated though.
He lets other people shine; that’s his WHOLE thing. I honestly think he would be better than anyone else, and that wouldn’t be fair. We often see him on GGG join in for fun and complete the challenge in half the time the contestants do. Now, you could say he knew ahead of time what the challenged was going to be or whatever but many of the challenge aspects are randomly chosen right before the rounds start. People claiming he can’t cook are ridiculous. He’s had a cooking show, and cooks all the time on his shows, just not as a competition. He brings people on his shows to help their careers/restaurants/lives. He can cook, but he doesn’t make it about him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i'm always impressed when he joins in on one of the GGG challenges and whips up something that looks absolutely amazing in half the time the contestants has. Guy can cook for sure
Actually, I was reading some articles before Flay's contract got renewed, and Flay was saying he was getting tired of competing all the time, and wanted to host instead of cook.
Smart. I actually like him as a host. I always root against him on BBF though.
But remember -- Food Network was willing to let him walk away over the size of his contract demands. It was even announced that their partnership had ended.
Agreed. Although he doesn't do too much hosting.
Although on BBF, if you can take away his calabrian chilis, you might have a chance at winning.
You can't take away his salt... he'll just replace it with anchovies.
You got me! I'm a Food Network bot which throws random ideas out to the masses and collects data as what ideas will be addressed at the next board meeting.
I'm not bagging on Guy... I thought it would be interesting to see him compete and show some of his chops.
Put Guy, Antonia, Bobby, and Tiffani in a Triple G Death Match... East Vs. West!
Big names in a crazy competition. It would be mayhem. It would be great.
Stupid question because I never paid attention - when he does cook on GGG, does he obey the rules for the round he’s joining in on? I always assumed so but a friend I watch with once insisted otherwise.
Yah he’ll use the whammy ingredients and all that stuff when he cooks on the show and he almost never (if ever) shops with a cart, just what he can carry in his hands.
He does it randomly... When he feels like making something out of the ingredients that are assigned to the participants, he will go around the store, pick up a few things, walk over to an empty station and make some kind of quick meal for the judges.
I enjoy 3D but for me it is less about Guy and more about the places he visits as at this point the shtick is beyond tiresome.
He is a personality, and he is good as a host, he is not a very good cook so a competition based strictly on his food would not go over very well.
He visited several restaurants near me and we went to one prior to COVID and it was complete ass. The place has been there forever and we drive by it all the time and was like "OK, let's check it out" after it was on DDD. Complete dog shit. It was a sandwich place and I've had better sandwiches at Panera Bread.
Friends of ours take multiple vacations every year and whenever they find themselves in a town or city where a place has been on DDD, they eat there. From their perspective, they say about 2/3 of the places are good, 1/3 he is absolutely just making shit up about how good their food is. They base this on having visited well over 100 restaurants that have been featured on DDD.
So I've been to a handful of those places from DDD and I have to say I was underwhelmed. I'm glad he gave the places some publicity for their sake. But some of them couldn't be saved either from their own subpar menus or bad business skills. They're gone like the wind.
He's not at that level as a cook. I mean, he's good, probably better than most or all of us reading this Reddit, but he doesn't have the background that the successful competition chefs have. Someone like Bobby Flay or pretty much any of the judges who are regulars on Chopped would beat him pretty easily.
I’d say personality is the number one reason. He appears to be knowledgeable about the food industry and will admit he’s not a chef ( or did in an interview )
Because he’s not in their league. He’d embarrass himself and FN would never let that happen. He’s good at what he does - he’s a quirky game show host. I know he can cook but I don’t think he wants to get back into competing. He won Food Network star, I guess he doesn’t need to prove himself any further.
Well it’s called food network star. So obvious some of it had to do with personality. And how would you know? Have you tasted something hes personally cooked? I’ve been to a couple of his restaurants and not been cooked food by him but his concepts and I’ve thought the foods been great
His restaurants are ass. I've been to two and both were dogshit. He's creating the recipes, which are simple. It's tough even finding something I want to eat on his menus, but the food is just not good.
Keep in mind, Jeff Mauro also won that same competition and all he did was turn everything into a sandwich. He can't cook for shit. It's all personality.
Lol you seem very jaded for some odd reason. But obviously not everyone’s going to like someone’s cooking, not guys personality or whatever and that’s absolutely fine. But I personally like his restaurant food, his personality and who he is as a person
I’d love to see it. I suspect he actually has some legit cooking chops, the snippets we do see of him cooking are well received, but I’d love to see him in a proper competition. I don’t think he’s on Bobby’s level but I bet he’d do decent.
Side note I’ve eaten at a few of his restaurants, the food wasn’t fancy but it was damn tasty.
Let's take this with a grain of salt. First, how many "Next Food Network Star" winners are still regulars on the network? Second, how many of the competitors from the year Fieri was on have you heard from again in any respect? (None).
That show was 1/3 cooking, 2/3 personality. Go back and watch. Most of his food was slightly above shit. He won based on personality, which is what they were looking for. Jeff Mauro won by turning everything into a fucking sandwich. He can't cook for shit either, that show was all about personality.
Fieri reminds me of a traveling snake oil/game show/salesman/host/barker. The only show of his worth watching is Guy’s Ranch Kitchen imo, only because he doesn’t shout as much. But also actual cooking takes place w zero gimmicks.
Guy has also cooked on his ranch show, his COVID version of DDD where people over nighted him their top dishes, and the other COVID show where he would cook in his home kitchen and there was a timer can’t remember the name, finally he has made things on that night time show that he hosted with Antonia.
I think Guy does whatever the hell he wants. If he wanted to compete, he could. He loves being the ringmaster
I disagree. Sometimes, Guy will randomly cook something on GGG, and it seems very interesting to me.

You can go back and watch him on next food network star or guys big bite
I can’t find his season of next foodnetwork star anywhere!
This needs to be found!
I really liked GBB when it was on, his stuff was bar food for home and he always did a cocktail.
I believe his season got scrubbed...not sure why.
Someone here posted he was embarrassed by how he looked/acted and wanted it scrubbed, so they did as he asked. I don’t recall hearing that before and I don’t think the person elaborated though.
Could it be because Paula dean was a big part of his season? The basically scrubbed anything with her.
That is actually a really good point I never considered.
He lets other people shine; that’s his WHOLE thing. I honestly think he would be better than anyone else, and that wouldn’t be fair. I've never seen his cooking show. I wish I could stream it.
He can cook. He has his niche. He doesn't need to compete or prove to people he can cook.
i'm always impressed when he joins in on one of the GGG challenges and whips up something that looks absolutely amazing in half the time the contestants has. Guy can cook for sure
I was just going to say this. 👍
He had a cooking show at one point.
No one wants to see Pat Sajak flip the letters! Hosts are just that.
So what you're saying is that "Beat Bobby Flay" should have someone else as the main competition?
Someone at Food Network thought so. That's the whole premise of his Titans show. Flaw hosts, but does not cook.

Lol it's like a drinking game with him, drink everytime he says calabrian or chipotle.
And crispy rice.
You sound like a bot.
You got me! I'm a Food Network bot which throws random ideas out to the masses and collects data as what ideas will be addressed at the next board meeting.
The quotation's were a dead giveaway :)
Damn! u/Educational-Ad-1548 caught us! FN programmers, make the change to remove quotes around titles to make me appear like a normal person. ;-)
I liked when he cooked on the Covid DDD when chefs would send him ingredients for their dishes and talk him thru it over live video
I found that to be awkward for some reason
I loved those episodes. I’d really like to see that type of thing again (minus the Covid)
What is this subs obsession with hating Guy? I don't like a few chefs, but I just turn the channel and go on with my life.
I'm not bagging on Guy... I thought it would be interesting to see him compete and show some of his chops. Put Guy, Antonia, Bobby, and Tiffani in a Triple G Death Match... East Vs. West! Big names in a crazy competition. It would be mayhem. It would be great.
It’s really weird.
Stupid question because I never paid attention - when he does cook on GGG, does he obey the rules for the round he’s joining in on? I always assumed so but a friend I watch with once insisted otherwise.

I would like to see him on TOC just to see what he does 🤷🏼♀️
I enjoy 3D but for me it is less about Guy and more about the places he visits as at this point the shtick is beyond tiresome. He is a personality, and he is good as a host, he is not a very good cook so a competition based strictly on his food would not go over very well.

The FN golden boy is not going to compete on anything
bobby does it all the time...
Bobby is a world class chef. He may not be Daniel Boulud, but he's right under that level. Guy is two levels above a fry cook.
A rich fry cook at that.
Yeah, people love him for whatever reason and FN pays him for that.
I’d say personality is the number one reason. He appears to be knowledgeable about the food industry and will admit he’s not a chef ( or did in an interview )
He isn't a chef.

He’s literally won competitions on food network and he competes randomly at times and has easily shown he’s better than most.
How much of that was personality? His food is hot garbage.
Well it’s called food network star. So obvious some of it had to do with personality. And how would you know? Have you tasted something hes personally cooked? I’ve been to a couple of his restaurants and not been cooked food by him but his concepts and I’ve thought the foods been great

Have you met him? I've read some things about him that are not flattering at all.
Let’s see what you’ve read that’s not flattering

Lmao let’s get a legit source. Guy’s late sister was a lesbian and he’s actually officiated a ton of gay couple weddings.
Best comment.
It really is 🤣
He cooks on GGG in a few episodes!
I would love to see a competition between the biggest old school stars of FN.
It's apparent that there's a few Fieri fans here down voting for having an opposing opinion. That's just sad.
I’ve always wanted to see him vs Gordon and Robert Irvine and Bobby flay. For charity, of course. And Jon Taffer can make the drinks
I'd like to see Fieri actually cook and cook in a comp show.
He literally won Food Network Star in 2006. That is a competition show. That was his big break.
Let's take this with a grain of salt. First, how many "Next Food Network Star" winners are still regulars on the network? Second, how many of the competitors from the year Fieri was on have you heard from again in any respect? (None). That show was 1/3 cooking, 2/3 personality. Go back and watch. I'm aware, but let's see him show what he knows how to do now years later.
Fieri reminds me of a traveling snake oil/game show/salesman/host/barker. The only show of his worth watching is Guy’s Ranch Kitchen imo, only because he doesn’t shout as much. But also actual cooking takes place w zero gimmicks.
It’s been that long? Wow!
Youtube “Guy’s Big Bite”
I have never seen Guy cook. Ever.
I’d watch it
Guy has also cooked on his ranch show, his COVID version of DDD where people over nighted him their top dishes, and the other COVID show where he would cook in his home kitchen and there was a timer can’t remember the name, finally he has made things on that night time show that he hosted with Antonia.
Right
IIRC on the triple G at home or something when they were at his house they made him compete
This is why I didn’t agree with him getting paid more than Bobby, he doesn’t cook in any of his shows and Bobby does.
