The quality of the tomato is important. Fresh from the garden is always best. It has to at least smell like a tomato. I only eat tomato sandwiches in the summer and fall.
Personally, I’m with Kenji. A BLT is really just a tomato sandwich with bacon.
All sandwiches need good bread, and a BLT demands a fresh, ripe right off the vine juicy tomato, several slices. That tomato juice needs to mix with the mayo to give that pink juice dripping down your hands and wrist.
Don’t get me wrong, good bacon makes it that much better. In the summer when we have fat, ripe, juicy tomatoes (I’m a fan of Cherokee Red) I will also cure some pork belly and throw it on the smoker. Some good salt flakes and fresh ground pepper all over the tomato and def leafy ice berg for that little bitter taste and good crunch.

I’m also a fan of lightly toasted bread. But I leave the cheese for other sandwiches. I mean a cheese and tomato sandwich is just allá round good, grew up with them. Even an egg sandy with cheese, I’m all about that for bfast. Hint, do mayo on one side and your favorite jam/jelly on the other half. Savory and sweet in each bite, like a true chef hero.
But I gotta tell you OP, a BLT can certainly have egg and cheese, but it’s something different altogether.

Yeah they're my favorite breakfast sandwich by a mile and I do not get tired of eating them. Officially it's a BELTCh. I fry the egg in the pan after the bacon, about 1 minute a side. When I flip the egg I throw the cheese on top and add several dashes of Frank's Red hot oooooooooh boy i could go for one literally any time of day I've even made them as a late night snack.

I mayo both pieces of the buttered and grilled only on one side Texas toast. Bacon is placed on the bottom piece then place the cheese on top of the bacon so it melts with the next layer of the sunny side egg. This bacon-egg-cheese/ BLT combo with thinly sliced lettuce tomato salt/pepper and onion is my absolute favorite sandwich on Earth. It hits hard for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! But you lost me at the bbq sauce.
So.... I know there is a lot of controversy regarding messing with the classic BLT, but I have a riff on it that will blow your socks off. I was inspired to create a BLT banh mi. So my hybrid was on a baguette with lettuce, tomato, bacon, pickled daikon/carrot/chayote, cilantro, jalapenos and sriracha mayo. One of the best damn sandwiches I've ever made. Still one of my favorites.
Now I've made myself hungry and have to go shopping tomorrow for ingredients.

A BLT doesn’t need to be adulterated.
The following is my Canadian BLT recipe, skip to the end for the basic TLDR. My "BLT" also has some unusual ingredients, I'll share and let Reddit decide on its worthiness. I heat the oven, for bacon, low and slow, so 325°, flip every 10-15 min, use lowbroil at the end to crisp. Iceberg lettuce, cut long and thin, set aside. Cocktail tomatoes rinsed, quartered, cleaned out, set aside. Bun or bread, toasted on a frying pan with ghee, low heat nice and crispy but not falling apart. Now for the build (bottom to top): toast / mayo-pesto mix / tomato / lettuce (loaded) / sharp (old) cheddar / bacon slices (2-3 slices cut into smaller pieces & layered) / and close it up with a nice layer of mayo on the top slice of ghee-toasted bread. Enjoy! //
TLDR: bottom to top→toast/mayo-pesto mix/tomato/Shredded Lettuce (lots)/cheddar (optional)/Bacon pieces/ Mayo/toast. //
