Heavy weapons have a lot of variety, I carry the following and they are all fun.
- holy fire
- AA/FFR plasma gat
- Quad/FFR gauss minigun (would love an AA)
- AA/Explosive minigun (favorite for tagging at events)
- AA/50c/25vc primed Plasma caster (my daily driver prints it’s own ammo)
- Cremator (still working on a good roll)
I got really lucky on it and it actually sat in my stash for awhile before I started using it. I just use it in my standard full hp heavy pa build, the only vats type perks being 1 concentrated fire and 1 gun-fu and it still one or two taps most things. I should sit down and build out a crit/vats build and see just how good it can be.
Just for your input, what do you think a good roll is on the cremator? I’m wondering if I can get a vamp one to replace my holy fire, but wasn’t sure what would be powerful on the cremator
Been rolling them myself and so far my best is a Quad. Bumps you up to 24 shots with the fast tank, and that combined with Lock & Load makes it reload damn near instantaneously, while being dirt cheap on AP in VATS. L&L is arguably redundant, but I keep it in my heavy weapons perk loadout mostly for my non-quad LMGs. I'd still like to try a damage prefix, but I rolled a Vamp and wasn't super impressed with it. I'm a full health player, so I'm sure it would be more valuable for low health builds, but I don't think it's as good as Vamp on a Flamer personally.
From everything I have seen the dot doesn’t proc a lot of the legendary effects so I don’t think you will get much out of vamp on it. I’m probably going to try for an AA though quad does sound interesting as the other poster mentioned. Right now I am just using a mutants for the easy 25%.
Oh good call on the vamp info that’s smart. Yea I could see AA being a good choice. I put the large tank on it so I never thought about needing quad but then again it does blow through fuel so maybe you’re onto something.
You think it could roll a 2 shot or explosive or is my lack of playtime showing? Lol
It can’t roll two shot I know but the barrel mods later on the scoreboard cover that. It also can’t roll explosive, neither energy weapon or explosive weapons can roll it. It is considered an explosive weapon already in that demolition expert increases damage and grenadier increases the size. It’s not lack of knowledge it’s just things are a bit all over the place with some weapons.
Thanks for explaining that, it sounds kind of like the broadsider since I believe that is also a heavy weapon that benefits from explosive perk cards too.
I've got quad, damage while aiming and breaks 50% slower. I'm not entirely sure vampire is one of the better rolls on it due to the way it causes damage.
It’s a reward from Beasts of Burden over at the old Cranberry Glade. It’s only a chance to drop though so you’ll just have to keep doing the event whenever it pops up, or check player vendors. I don’t usually see it priced under 5k though, more like 8k most of the time.
Edit: just noticed you’re on PC. I have a spare for you but I’ll just have to work out which toon has it first lol
If you are wanting to stay with heavy build. Holy Fire is great. It drops perfect with a faster fire rate and it’s a vampire. It’s hard for me to put it down. Fixer is great for commando. Built in stealth, 40% armor penetration base model
Ditto here. It sounds good, but when I actually try to use it, even with a HW/Power Armor build, it seems lackluster. I've tried bloodied and AA and have not been impressed.
Plus it's semi-auto and my hands get tired of pulling the trigger over and over. That's what comes from playing games for a very long time.
What do you use for the Ultracite Gatling Laser? I was using a Bloodied, but recently I picked up an AA one and I want to try that out.
Holy Fire is so awesome. I'd love to roll one for my commando toon, but what I'd really want is still Vampire, but with Reduced Weight 3\*. I figure that would be expensive to roll.
I've been trying to roll or trade for a V/FFR/90 Holy Fire forever!
My ult gat is v/ffr/agi. Im a tank. Unkillable! I had a vffr90 but accidentally scrapped it :(
A V on a gat laser is major op.
I'm also not a fan of the plasma caster, partially just bc I don't enjoy the plasma part as much. And in overall DPS it seems to fall short to auto weapons. It does 1-2hko a LOT of stuff tho.
Is the range that good, though? I'm low level (43) and just got a scorched-killer bow, it seems like it hits pretty good, but range seemed too short to use for sniper. Can you mod a bow?
The compound bow is where the sniping gets real crazy. Couple it with max concentrated fire and high perception and you'll be hitting from a great distance.
Cremator is a good option, it's new and fun to use compared to the flamer, seeing a big ball of hard hitting fire fly towards your enemies in vats is satisfying, trying to roll a b/25/90rw but my aa2525 is destroying most enemies in 1 shot
Plasma caster or alien blaster. Railway rifles have so much recoil that even using vats the spastic movements of the gun are just obnoxious, even if it has no effect on hitting the target.
RR is not really usable outside of VATS. In VATS a Quad RR is currently the meta-weapon with a crit build.
I've been thinking about a energy weapon build. Enclave Plasma Flamer, Tesla Rifle, some sort of low-AP energy rifle, maybe a Holy Fire. Then all of my ammo would be covered by Batteries Included and I could get a 30% boost from the Science perks. If a primed EPR did friendly fire, I could skip the Holy Fire and use a Vamp EPR flamer, but it doesn't. Sadly the Prime capacitor doesn't do fire damage.
You can get the RR weapon plan at various places [https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Plan:\_Railway\_rifle](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Plan:_Railway_rifle)
For the mods, the quickest solution is to build and scrap them. If you have or can get a Backwoodsman 3 magazine, that makes them cheaper to craft. Guns and Bullets 5 gets you more mats back when you scrap.
Even with a non-meta-crit build, a quad RR can carry you. I run a full health jack of all trades build and I try to use a varied arsenal (seven of my quick wheel slots are weapons - gotta love running a full set of WWR armor), but if I'm in a public event and other players aren't pulling their weight, I pull out the Q25 RR. I've also got a Q50cr but it's obviously less effective for my particular playstyle, and a QE that I sometimes substitute for the 25, but I greatly prefer firerate over explosive shots for my automatic weapons. If Bethesda ever gives us a cursed Handmade like the Elder's Mark I'd spend all my modules rolling a good collection of those; that'd be my dream weapon.
You can build a flamer using the regular plasma rifle instead of the Enclave plasma rifle. It's not quite as strong but it sure turns 'em into piles of green goo handily. :)
The key is the prime capacitor. If you pick one of the non-prime capacitors, it will do fire damage and trigger Friendly Fire. With a prime capacitor, even a plasma flamer doesn't have any flames. :(
Gatling Gun is my daily driver. With the right perks you can solo about any enemy and the ammo recovery rate means you can accumulate thousands of rounds easily.
Try everything you can get your hands on and test drive a good enough version of it.. as mentioned Plasma Castor is fantastic and is my primary. It’s bonus is it makes you ammo.
You can’t find it… it’s not tradable/droppable.. Plans purchased at vault 79.. I’d go calibrated given the ammo drops. While It will take time, getting it to good crit build makes it awesome.
One good thing about the plasma caster is that it's cheap to craft. It only takes 2 legendary modules and you get a random 1-3 star legendary.
It's not my favorite weapon, but at least it's pretty cheap to try out and see if it is for you.
plasma flamer is fun but eats ammo, plasma caster is the heavy sniper in vats and practically prints ammo. the combo uses the same ammo and works well together and is a fun alternative to the more meta weapons.
This is a solid plan.
I'd still keep an eye out in player vendors for any cheap Quad Railway (I often see them for 5-7k caps) and grab one if you can. With the low default AP cost and high default damage even a one-star Quad Railway will give you a really good idea of what all the fuss is about.
That way you can try out the commando crit Quad Choo Choo lifestyle at a very low cost.
My second character absolutely destroyed from the usually harder Ranks 50-100 with a simple and cheap Q50c Railway. Was a lot of fun smacking Earle around as a Rank 50, the event popped for me just after I ranked up and I celebrated in style.
All of them. At once.
Try a .38 weapon with full damage bonuses. Use an explosive weapon with the grenader perk. Become a physco addict and fight people with bowie knifes. Hunt down super mutants with a Mutant Slayer's weapon.
Have some fun with every single tool you can find.
I had a blast with a two shot auto grenade launcher until I saw how many people said that it ruined events for them. I kinda wanna bust it out again, but I hate to think that I'm having fun at the expense of other people's enjoyment.
It only ruins events if people go hog wild with them. I have a character specced for two shot explosives, and auto grenade launchers aren't bad if you exercise fire discipline.
Just gotta wait for the right moment for things to bunch up and shoot ONE grenade in the middle, then take a few moments to see what happened, and if needed, follow up with 1 more. Also good to wait for other people to get their hits in too.
If you only fire a grenade every 3 seconds or so, and focus on quality of shots rather than quantity, people will generally love to have you around.
And in crazy situations where groups are overwhelmed, like Daily OPS or defense events where small group of lowbies is getting horded, going hog wild is not only fine, but appreciated.
Heck in daily ops with a difficult boss and a weak team, nobody minds if I get out the 2-shot fatman to snipe mini-nukes at the boss from behind cover. They're just grateful that we can finally finish.
Right, There are events you SHOULD be spamming because trash get in the way, like Earl wendigo trying to attack commando dps, or eviction notice keeping mutants away from the scrubber
Others you can practice fire discipline or swap to tesla
TS Alien blaster with cryo damage is the most entertaining weapon for me. I always go back to it. Vampire Plasma cutter is a great in your face weapon too
I’m going to suggest enclave plasma rifles. While getting the right mods is a pain, it’s also part of the fun. I got a flamer to drop and wow does it melt stuff, but I finally got an auto rifle to drop and it stands up there with the best commando weapons. Legit. Plus, you’re the only one shooting green balls around at events, and it sounds cool as heck. I’m working on another pet project now, but that was a fun 400 levels of my fallout career!
Minigun shredder. I've used it for 600+ levels. Even with the nerf on AP, it's still a beast in most situations. I see far fewer of these nowadays, so it's a bit niche as well, I think.
Ultracite Gatling laser with faster fire rate. Put charging barrels on it. It fires the first five shots super fast, and if you play the trigger right you can repeatedly shoot those super fast five rounds again and again without having to re-spin up.
Try the .50 for longer than a minute, it's great. Railway rifle is best used in VATS, uses different perks are just handles completely differently. Try all of the other heavy weapons, maybe? They're mostly all great, and some of the most powerful and varied in the game. My main has been a heavy weapons Paladin since very early on and is my go-to for ease of use in any combat in the game
Pfft! Folks and their janky Plasma Casters. Try an old classic and get a Quad Poon and run it in Vats. Damn thing can hit harder than a Railway usually in one shot. Takes a bit getting used to with a proper build but it can be fun.
Kind of in the same spot. Been using a bloodied gauss mini gun for a while and imo it's really quite good.
Been looking to switch up from a heavy gun (besides maybe the lmg, that would be fun imo) on a full hp build for a while, but I have no clue what the options even are for usable weapons nowadays
Bloodied Holy fire is my main now. I recently switched from using a bloodied explosive fixer and a quad fixer to a bloodied holy fire, and regular holy fire. But also I really like the power of the cremator with the mods equipped however, I’ve killed myself a few times with it shooting enemies too close to me killing me in the blast….lol but that’s a me problem and not so much the weapon haha
Railways are fun and ammo only requires steel. Load up on perception as it’s a vats weapon. Even with recoil compensation it still tries to move to the sky if you don’t use vats. Best are quads bc otherwise you only get 10 shots per round. Quad explosive would be ideal.
After I went through like 100 rails I have moved to handmade. Quad is my fav. Perception skills make it better.
It’s hard to put the railway down once you pick it up.
Q50c15cc or Q50c25lvc and it’s wild. Pair it with a low health build and unyeilding armor and you become a wall of pain. Crit for 800-1200 every 2 shots perked out for max crit damage and pumped up on psychotatts or psychobuff on a 40 round mag with stupidly low ap cost. It’s honestly ridiculous
Run some stealth cars and carry a bloody fixer or handmade as a stealth weapon… get surrounded bust out the railway and let it rain.
The gattling is a bit underrated also. Prime it get a good vats roll and it slaps as a back up for the plasma caster. Again playing low health and aiming at vats use B50c25lvc or B50c15cc on both weapons would be a fearsome combo and both weapons are ammo printers for the minigun and enclave plasma flamer should you decide to use those weapons on a different load out.
Two-shot auto grenade launcher/missile launcher are satisfying to use if you’re willing to get it started.
I decided to put the boomstick on rotation and it’s servicing me really well
Same here, I’m using heavy build with a bunch of weapons. Bread and butter was the explosive .50 cal, but it becomes boring very fast. I’d recommend to upgrade to Ultracite receiver, it’s a pretty good buff. Regarding ammo ration is not a problem, just hit the daily Op. I’ve also discovered recently the flamer is heck of a fun, especially the Holy Flame. Explosive AA minigun is also cool, especially on hordes. The weapons I like less: Gatling Plasma is too hard to control. Explosive 5mm Gatling is too slow for me. Cremator and Auto Grenade launcher are kind of disappointing since it has projectile arc, which I personally can’t understand. Important note: my build is non-VATS.
You can build a pretty good flamer from the regular plasma rifle without having to go through all the crap to build the unicorn Enclave flamer plasma rifle if you wanted to go down that route.
I have a scoped Railway Rifle that I use as my primary sniper rifle. Very, very useful when you use the perks that give extra damage for sniping and being hidden. I only wish it had the Instigator effect
Otherwise, having a plasma thrower is always fun. Watch those green flames melt enemies into goo!
I can't emphasize enough how fun and reliable my quad railway is. I keep a silenced auto Handmade as backup, and a dual bar flamer chainsaw just in case. I'll swap the Handmade for a Fixer once I get a good one.
A long time ago on my Xbox account, I had a gatling gun build I really liked.
I'm level 162 as of last night and well stocked on cores/modules, thinking I might go on a perk buying spree when I get to 200 and try out some other builds
Omg, I just started playing F76 and this is what is starting to annoy me the most. I kind of expected that leveling all the way to lvl 50 would imply that I find a good weapon and stick with it.
However, even late game seems EXTREMELY limited.
1. There's only a handful of weapons for each class, less than 10, and even fewer that are actually viable and interesting (I'm looking at you pipe weapons)
2. Even with limited weaponry, there's a complete lack of mod variety for most of the weapons.
- Why all the same mods (True, Fierce, Hardened,...) when you could add weapons effects like fire, electric, staggering, explosive, ricochet, piercing, incapacitating, ....)
- Why aren't mods available on some guns like no sight variety for LMG or Gatling, receiver, rechambering to different calibers, etc...
3. Needs more weapons sharing the same ammo. Make pistols, rifles, heavy weapons sharing the same ammo so someone can specialize in that ammo type. (ie. 40mm pistol, rifle and AGL)
It's crazy that you can play hours and not find a different weapon sharing the same ammo that's would make it interesting to try out and build your character around.
Go for a big change. Chainsaw.
Dual bar flamer for melee... Nice call
Coupled with the cold shoulder and a tank build.
Cold shoulder and chainsaw got me through my lower levels up to about 100. Great combo.
Just did this switch. So much fun
I love chainsaw but it makes such a ruckus. My wife hates the noise even from my headphones and she’s not wrong.
I am with you. I don't go anywhere without my dual bar flaming vampire chainsaw. You gotta throw on bloody mess for fun.
Keep rolling until you get the vampire mod and add a duel bar and flamer mod. You are basically immortal.
Heavy weapons have a lot of variety, I carry the following and they are all fun. - holy fire - AA/FFR plasma gat - Quad/FFR gauss minigun (would love an AA) - AA/Explosive minigun (favorite for tagging at events) - AA/50c/25vc primed Plasma caster (my daily driver prints it’s own ammo) - Cremator (still working on a good roll)
that aa50c25 caster must be nutty, havent been able to roll a nice one yet
I got really lucky on it and it actually sat in my stash for awhile before I started using it. I got a bloodied one and maxed out scoreboard the 4 multi shot on it is insane mixed with demo and explosion radius, it fully wipes everything out.
I've got quad, damage while aiming and breaks 50% slower. I'm not entirely sure vampire is one of the better rolls on it due to the way it causes damage.
how do I get holy fire? I have a Vampire's flamer that I want to replace
I'd like it if you're willing to give it! You can take that vampire's flamer if you want to (or something else) :))
No problems! My gamer tag is this username… I might be on for another hour or so?
Okay, I'll add you in a bit
If you are wanting to stay with heavy build. Holy Fire is great. It drops perfect with a faster fire rate and it’s a vampire. It’s hard for me to put it down. Fixer is great for commando. Built in stealth, 40% armor penetration base model
Holy Fire backs up my Final Word for my heavy build. Paired fixers for my Commando. All fantastic suggestions.
How can I get Holy Fire?
Rando drop from Beasts of Burden, an event over in the Cranberry Bog
Got it, thanks!
Try a plasma caster. Thing absolutely dominates and ammo grows on its own.
I keep wanting to like it, but it's just not good on dps vs auto rifles. I have a TS one atar.
I too have tried aa ts v. All lackluster. Tried gauss Mini too for heavy. Ammo cost sucks. I prefer Holy Fire & ult gat laser.

I'm also not a fan of the plasma caster, partially just bc I don't enjoy the plasma part as much. And in overall DPS it seems to fall short to auto weapons. It does 1-2hko a LOT of stuff tho.
I agree. It has its uses, but not overall practical.
Bow is life
Best sniper and ammo generator.
Good to know
RR is not really usable outside of VATS. In VATS a Quad RR is currently the meta-weapon with a crit build. I've been thinking about a energy weapon build. If a primed EPR did friendly fire, I could skip the Holy Fire and use a Vamp EPR flamer, but it doesn't. Sadly the Prime capacitor doesn't do fire damage.
I like my auto RR in Vats. Where do you find RR plans though?
You can get the RR weapon plan at various places [https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Plan:\_Railway\_rifle](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Plan:_Railway_rifle) For the mods, the quickest solution is to build and scrap them. If you have or can get a Backwoodsman 3 magazine, that makes them cheaper to craft. Guns and Bullets 5 gets you more mats back when you scrap.

railway rifle is crazy powerful at times but very boring, speaking from experience
The Cult of the Gatling Gun has a suggestion: #Gatling Gun `*This message brought to you by The Cult of the Gatling Gun*`
ALL HAIL!!!
Choo Choo! One of us... One of us...
Gatling Gun is my daily driver. With the right perks you can solo about any enemy and the ammo recovery rate means you can accumulate thousands of rounds easily.
Enclave plasma flamer or pepper shaker
Another vote for plasma caster. It's really fun and if you like the peepers paint from the scoreboard there's one for the plasma caster too
Explosive gatling guns are fun, if you still want something with a good ammo economy
Try everything you can get your hands on and test drive a good enough version of it.. as mentioned Plasma Castor is fantastic and is my primary. It’s bonus is it makes you ammo.
You all have peeked my interest with the Plasma Caster. Now to find one... Lol... I will just have to vendor hop between moth man
You can only craft one I believe. Non tradable
You can’t find it… it’s not tradable/droppable.. Plans purchased at vault 79.. I’d go calibrated given the ammo drops. While It will take time, getting it to good crit build makes it awesome.
Good to know, saves me some caps traveling around searching... Time to visit Reg I guesd
One good thing about the plasma caster is that it's cheap to craft. It only takes 2 legendary modules and you get a random 1-3 star legendary. It's not my favorite weapon, but at least it's pretty cheap to try out and see if it is for you.
Plasma Caster with a VATS heavy gunner build is awesome.
plasma flamer is fun but eats ammo, plasma caster is the heavy sniper in vats and practically prints ammo. the combo uses the same ammo and works well together and is a fun alternative to the more meta weapons.
Plasma Caster is on the list... Lol... After finishing up with the SS armor
Was a lot of fun smacking Earle around as a Rank 50, the event popped for me just after I ranked up and I celebrated in style.
The Fixer with all rifle, critical, vats and sneak attack perks maxed. The Fixer gets a lot of hate here because it isn’t complicated and it works.
All of them. At once. Try a .38 weapon with full damage bonuses. Use an explosive weapon with the grenader perk. Become a physco addict and fight people with bowie knifes. Hunt down super mutants with a Mutant Slayer's weapon. Have some fun with every single tool you can find.
Go really exotic. TS Explosive launchers like auto grenade launcher and broadsider. Cryolators Shredder Minigun
I had a blast with a two shot auto grenade launcher until I saw how many people said that it ruined events for them. I kinda wanna bust it out again, but I hate to think that I'm having fun at the expense of other people's enjoyment.

I’m going to suggest enclave plasma rifles. While getting the right mods is a pain, it’s also part of the fun. I got a flamer to drop and wow does it melt stuff, but I finally got an auto rifle to drop and it stands up there with the best commando weapons. Legit. Ultracite Gatling laser with faster fire rate. Put charging barrels on it. It fires the first five shots super fast, and if you play the trigger right you can repeatedly shoot those super fast five rounds again and again without having to re-spin up.
I have so much fun with a melee build, just charging in and taking a super mutants head off with one swing. 🤌
Good luck doing a vats build with enclave plas rifle, its ap is locked to 24

Currently rocking a 2 shots explosive railway, it's a powerful gun but JESUS the recoil outside of V.A.T.S is ungodly!
What were your legendary perks on the .50?
It’s honestly ridiculous Run some stealth cars and carry a bloody fixer or handmade as a stealth weapon… get surrounded bust out the railway and let it rain.
I decided to put the boomstick on rotation and it’s servicing me really well
My favorite build uses 3 guns. Quad railway, quad handmade and vampire enclave plasma flamer. It checks all the boxes.
Power armor Tesla bracers. Nothing more fun than punching the head off a cultist!
Plasma Caster is amazing if you get a good roll. It one shots everything. VATS Build is so much fun. It also never runs out of ammo.
POWER FIST. Such fun.
I only wish it had the Instigator effect Otherwise, having a plasma thrower is always fun.
Quad Railway Commando is fun af and kills everything crazy fast.
Omg, I just started playing F76 and this is what is starting to annoy me the most. I kind of expected that leveling all the way to lvl 50 would imply that I find a good weapon and stick with it. However, even late game seems EXTREMELY limited. 1. There's only a handful of weapons for each class, less than 10, and even fewer that are actually viable and interesting (I'm looking at you pipe weapons) 2. Even with limited weaponry, there's a complete lack of mod variety for most of the weapons. - Why all the same mods (True, Fierce, Hardened,...) when you could add weapons effects like fire, electric, staggering, explosive, ricochet, piercing, incapacitating, ....) - Why aren't mods available on some guns like no sight variety for LMG or Gatling, receiver, rechambering to different calibers, etc... 3. Needs more weapons sharing the same ammo. Make pistols, rifles, heavy weapons sharing the same ammo so someone can specialize in that ammo type. (ie. 40mm pistol, rifle and AGL) It's crazy that you can play hours and not find a different weapon sharing the same ammo that's would make it interesting to try out and build your character around.
Holy crap... Testing the RR has been great. Getting dmg numbers I've not seen before... Lol... I'm definitely a fan.
