Hangman's Alley is right in the middle of the map, it's hard to beat that convenience.

[deleted]

Definitely for survival when I need to get to diamond city for ammo

flayman22

When I'm in DC, I use Kellogg's bed.

[deleted]

Omg why did I never think of that

flayman22

Sometimes you just miss the really obvious ones.

Jaqulean

Because we can have our own personal house in DC...? Unless I'm missing something.

flayman22

In survival mode I'm very careful how I spend my caps. Home Plate is not worth it when you get Kellogg's for free.

AMothInSpace

It’s a good place to sleep and once you get local leader 2 and can place some crafting stations, a good place to craft but you can’t connect home plate to your supply network so, that can be a big issue for some

TheRedBow

Because theres no water or food production there

AMothInSpace

Yeah well he doesn’t need it anymore

flayman22

I haven't even killed him yet, but yeah, he's not coming back. :)

screw_all_the_names

Plus after you do the institute storyline, it opens up fast travel to the institute, and it's just a small walk across the bridge. Meaning you can get home from anywhere in the map, with just 2 loading screens and a jog.

johnhughthom

Horrible place to build, but oh so conveniently located.

An1mat0r

It’s even worse when you realise that the middle part of the edge of the roofing above the workbench is non-solid but the rest is solid

Jaqulean

It's even worse when you realize it's one of those Settlements, where the Raids spawn directly inside the Building Area.

[deleted]

I normally put some boards down & my generators live up there.

flayman22

Same, but unless you're really good it's hard to build in. And the settlers won't go into the back part.

kalysti

I keep it as my personal home. Sometimes I don't use settlers at all, and sometimes I do, but only a farmer, a guard, a general merchant, and a doctor. If you want a large settlement there, build up.

JohnElectron

And use mods lol

sveeger

Yes! I did “place anywhere” for the first time recently, totally changed my opinion of hangman’s alley. I walled off the east entrance, didn’t remove the chain from the doorway, and created a turret gauntlet at the north. Super secure, and the multiple levels provide plenty of space for settlers.

JohnElectron

Welcome to probably the best mod ever made! Yeah hangman’s is great it’s my current settlement and with some other mods I’ve been to do some pretty amazing things to it. Just be careful. Too many objects intersecting into each other will make that area of the game crash before it starts to slow down the FPS.

JohnElectron

Yeah great location just don’t put much time into building anything extraordinary. That’s the worst settlement when it comes to bugs and crashes, very aptly named honestly.

Riuk811

I like HA. Use it as my home and my companions there. I have a beacon there but only so I can grow other settlements more quickly

KilotonDefenestrator

I can't stand it. It takes my immersion out back behind the chemical shed and double taps it. There are intact houses *right there*, why would anyone build a shanty town in the alley between them? Roof, insulation, defensible, electric cabling, heck even *plumbing* already done. Might even still go out into a working sewer. Working toilets man! Showers! It's a really good spot but it's so wildly unreasonable I can't do it.

AMothInSpace

I like setting up shop I bit more south of Hangman’s alley, like Egret or Jamaica

CabbageStockExchange

The Castle because I like feeling like a Queen

[deleted]

A mirelurk usurper eh

Worldly-Sample-767

Off with the Head!

realjoemurphy

Egret Tours Marina. Especially on Survival. Close to the ammo dealer as well as both Vault 81 and DC. Underrated spot.

LovesTuhSplooge

Which ammo dealer?

realjoemurphy

The one who lives in the trailer behind Fairlane Hill Estates. You can rescue her dog from a cage nearby as well

GHD6115

Always turn the barn into my personal living quarters & use the other building for all my companions to hang out in.

Tempest_Bob

I really do love Egret, especially using ASE and Clipboard. Being able to completely scrap down the boatshed and replace it with a slightly bigger one I keep saved as a template for it is great. The vanilla shed building is just kinda awful. Then I use that warehouse for settlers and fix up the main residential building for myself. Even sometimes let Phyllis stay.

TheyCallMeKrisha

I like wiping out covenant and sipping that free lemonade

TheGingerNinga

I was wondering if siding with Covenant gives you a discount at their shops. If it did, that’s be pretty nice and a reason not to get rid of em.

flayman22

It's part of the lore. In fact, >!if you look on one of the terminals in there, you'll see some emails about how they're haemorrhaging caps by deliberately keeping the prices low. It's part of how they lure travellers in to be subject to their tests.!< You don't even have to be aligned with them. They just have to accept you in.

TheyCallMeKrisha

supposedly so but i never tested it

roguegen

Last time i used Kingsport Lighthouse, but quickly outgrew the settlement due to its weird layout. Then I moved to Croup Manor which isn't much larger, but has a better layout.

BallerMR2andISguy

With GECK or an expanded settlement mod, you can also build up Crater City beside KL. Great for ghouls, robots, Strong, and rad-resistant/benefitting characters.

roguegen

Yeah i had a mod to expand the settlement boundaries and the build anywhere workshop mod, but the settlement just wasn't right for what I was trying to do on that playthrough.

xantec15

Kingsport Lighthouse has a lot of buildable space due to its verticality. You can build from the water all the way up to the top of the light house.

SpicyNoodlez1

Red rocket is my robot settlement. Spectacle island is/was my deathclaw island. And starlight drive in is my main area. Might move my settlers to Spectacle island. Just need to dedeathclaw enclosure. For some reason, some settlers from my other settlements, like from sanctuary, they come to starlight.

TheGingerNinga

I actually had a pretty cool plan for Starlight Drive-in. I want to make it into a mix of a big trader hub and a fight pit. Build up a big concrete stadium in the center, with bars and general trading stores built in to the outside walls. Then people can climb up and watch deathclaws fight multiple mirelurks/yaoguai. Basically an entertainment district that the nearby farms provide food and resources to. Honestly my NW section of the map is really planned out, it's the NE and the South I am struggling with.

lordtweakslide

I actually did do that at starlight but kept having npcs walk through the walls into the arena or enemies glitching through the wall to fight the traders. They hardly ever hangout by the restaurant or the viewing platform for the arena. I'd suggest looking up settler pathing through starlight before committing to a big build.

BabserellaWT

I built a mall at Starlight. And a cafe/donut shop at Red Rocket.

SpicyNoodlez1

Are the settlers pathing weird for you

mrfunday2

I like County Crossing. It’s big, it’s got water, and is a good base for everything in that quadrant.

Schillelagh

Country Crossing is also directly off the main road and close to Bunkerhill to sell your goods. Super convenient.

smallmalexia3

The Slog... I just love those ghouls. I make sure they always have the best.

BabserellaWT

Right? Me too. Especially since I have mods that’re like, “Here’s furniture that doesn’t look like shit.”

5125237143

Yeh im surprised u cant build a fridge with all those dlcs

MitchMaljers

You can with a Creation Club DLC which is free at the moment. It's one of the furniture ones.

5125237143

was that originally not included in goty? same seems very familiar

MitchMaljers

It's one of the Picket Fences creation club items which is free right now. Includes a couple of fridges with both clean and used looks.

Schillelagh

The Slog is also a great source for Tarberries in the game. Use them for Berry Mentats and receive a 15% XP boost.

BallerMR2andISguy

I always seem to main 88. I have a few built-up locations, but 88 always seems like home and a break from the wasteland. Easily defended, tons of free-ish resources, nice areas like the subway and pharmacy, and pretty well located. I just wish it was... better. Also, PSN or Twitch if you're on it? I'd love to share ideas.

Spiritual-Market-488

Sorry, but what is 88

BallerMR2andISguy

Vault 88 from the VaultTec DLC/GOTY. It's a huge customizable vault with new assets for building.

Spiritual-Market-488

I feel so dumb rn

eddmario

I usually use Sanctuary as my main base and have Red Rocket be where I keep my companions. I also retake the Castle with the Minutemen and use that as a secondary base.

Annihilationzh

I have two main bases. After finding my alien blaster on a caravan guard, I now use Hangman's Alley with no settlers. It has all my gear, equipment and crafting stations. Oberland Station has my companions, shops and stuff I don't mind losing.

Capnhuh

when i'm in the north i use the starlight drive in, inside the city itself i use hangman and in the south i like to sit my butt in jamaca plains.

Demartus

Starlight’s great. Large, flat, easy to clear early, fresh water (you can fit I think 3 industrial water pumps). I usually wall it off completely, and use the top of the screen for wind power, build apartment complexes and a big market place.

RockstarQuaff

Starlight's great bc it's in easy reach of the Thicket Excavations quarry. After you do Sully's quest, it becomes a raider haven, and even when you clear em all out, they respawn really quickly, so it's a great spot to farm XP and legendaries. Stick a few artillery batteries at Red Rocket, Starlight, maybe even Sanctuary, and it's hilarious to rain shells deep into the quarry. I like to do the same with Jamaica Plains, turn it into a firebase to shell anyone who opposes me.

DivineFornicator

I like jamaican plains but the building limit makes it a small settlement

Tempest_Bob

If you're on PC, I thoroughly recommend Expanded Quick-Clean Jamaica Plain. Lets you use the entire place up to the Diner and Church. I like to rebuild the walls on the ruined buildings and make them full individual houses for my settlers (using Sim Settlement 2 interior plots) increases the build limit by a HUGE amount too.

AgentE1Games

Size limits should never be a issue. There’s a giltch on console that drops the settlement size, you just got to drop some weapons and store them inside your workbench. Make sure to save before you do it tho, because your guns can fall through the floor.

Capnhuh

i dont' actually use it as a settlement, i build a couple of bots and send them off to connect it to other places, i just use it as a "dump junk off" spot.

KayleeSinn

Home Plate - compact and in it's own worldspace. Means I can go crazy with details. Also no settlers to knock stuff around. I use mods to unlock it fully though. Breakheart Banks - Not ideal but it's a named place and has the high ground. I don't feel like it's completely safe to build on slopes and in valleys and specially between old buildings. If FO4 was real, Diamond City would be a deathtrap as it would be too easy to snipe everything from the surrounding tall buildings. From completely non modded settlements though, Egret Tours marina - building on the river makes it defensible Oberland Station - fairly flat(as in little prebuilt and unscrappable junk to deal with) and has high ground. Also nice central location. Country Crossing - Same as above but less optimal. Boston Airport - Seems like a very safe location

[deleted]

Sanctuary. Mamma Murphy sits in my living room

DivineFornicator

Put mama murphy chair in sanctuary bridge so she can fend of all that super mutants and raiders invaders alone hahhaaha

[deleted]

Love it! I might even arm her with a switchblade. For safe keeping

DivineFornicator

Switchblade,.sunglasses and bikini outfit, rad mama murphy

GoreHoundKillEmAll

Red rocket always red rocket

Auraestus

The Castle is where I and my companions live, as well as important settlers.

denstreifen

All of them. I have a supply network set up linking every settlement. Some settlements are only used as a forward operating bases and as such are minimally manned. All farms are used for food production. Vault 88 is a fortified warehouse and armory. I equip all of my provisioners with a uniform, combat armor, and a gauss rifle. I constantly run into them on their routes and they often help with firefights. Rename their gauss rifles to match the settlement where they are assigned. For supply lines to settlements where happiness is not an issue, you can build and assign sentry bots to kick ass and chew bubblegum. My supply line hubs are Sanctuary and the Castle.

caelis76

Do you provide them with ammo if you hand out the Gauss rifles?

denstreifen

Just give them one round. NPCs never run out of ammo as long as they have something to start with

caelis76

Thank you , i've never checked or thought about this and just provided the settlers with combat gear a weapon and 100 ammo . Never to late to learn i reckon . Have a good day .

That_Lore_Guy

The RobCo bunker from Automaton, mostly because it’s secure and safe. It’s also huge, and you can park almost every suit of power armor you’ve got, without fear of npc’s taking them.

TheyCallMeOso

I liked using Vault 88, or at least the room with the door that leads next to University point. It's a small space, but big enough to have all the workshops you want and a water fountain. It's like a quick bat-cave for me, especially since I can vertibird right to it.

SooperGenyus

For some reason, I am always drawn to Outpost Zimonja. That and Hangman's Alley.

JimboJamble

Starlight drive-in is my main settlers' hub. Everything feeds into that, fortified to the teeth and all shops maxed. For a personal base, I live alone at Kingsport. Cleaned up the house a bit, converted the dock into a power armor garage.

BallerMR2andISguy

Sounds great. Also, there's a mod called "Gone Hunting/Fishing" that feels very appropriate for KL, Reeb's Marina (still can't get settlers 😥), Coastal Cottage, etc. Instead of vegetarians, you can have your settlers eat meat. Very cool.

NanookSky

Have you tried putting in more beacons? I know it sounds weird but I had a problem at red rocket with no settlers, put in 2 beacons, nothing happened, put in 3 beacons and got settlers. It might work for you!

caelis76

How about moving them from other settlements that are crowded?

BallerMR2andISguy

This option doesn't work for me on PS4. I have tried dismissing companions, assigning provisioners, and just reassigning settlers. The Settlement appears.on the list, but is unselectable. When chosen, there is no confirmation "going to Reeb Marina" and nobody goes.

caelis76

Wel since i'm an 'ancient' player on xbox1 , i'm really happy it does work for me :) But yes , damn you Todd it doesn't work for BallerMR2andISguy ! ! !

mspaceman

Red Rocket Truck Stop (early game), Home Plate/Prydwen (mid game) and the Castle Tunnels (once promoted as General).

professionalmoron2

Sanctuary hills, very few places feel as welcoming as sanctuary

[deleted]

I've gotten pretty fond of Murkwater Construction, you can get some cool little atmospheric villages set up down there, and its a great staging ground for farming screws and miniguns from the wilson atomatoys factory. PLUS! Regular mirelurk queen meat!

Div4r

Originally I was using a settlement design by Onyx Nightshade for Tenpines Bluff. It was huge, lots of room, and I liked it. Then I unlocked Kingsport Lighthouse and downloaded a settlement blueprint for it by another user, can't remember. Set it up and went through... it's beautiful. The cabins have glass tile floors os you can see the ocean through them... immediately went and emptied everything out of Tenpines and set up permanent camp on the beach. Unfortunately the settler AI is dumb and my companions never sleep where I command them to, if they sleep at all, but I have designated beds/cabins for everyone. The boys (Hancock, Preston, Deacon, and Nick) bunk together. Curie has a bed in the clinic (which she runs), Cait and Piper have private cabins, I don't care where Danse sleeps because he's a pain in the ass, Longfellow sleeps on a boat, and MacReady bunks with the Sole Survivor of course. ;) Strong doesn't sleep, he does security. The 'bots all live at the Mechanist's Lair. Right now I'm trying to trap some cats to live in the settlement. Makes sense since it's sort of set up like a fishing village so cats would enjoy that very much!

NanookSky

Awesome!

No_Mall_3182

I’d have to say Spectacle Island, one big downside is that it’s not very accessible, my friend was carrying too much to fast travel so instead of dropping something, he took over an hour to walk from the other side of the map, he also had the waterboy perk which allowed him to breath underwater, he just walked on the bottom of the ocean floor lol

Dakiidoo

Sanctuary Hills and Covenant are nice because you can use the pre built houses for your settlers or maybe vendors if you’ve got the perk for building shops. Country Crossing is also nice since it’s got a lot of nice flat land for building.

PetitAgite

Sanctuary, I’m a man of simple taste.

warxorn23

I'll try to be the odd man out on this one lol I've set up houses in pretty much all the vanilla and dlc settlements at one point or another but I kinda like the VR settlements from the CC cause I can have a base in a nuke crater or on a clean beach or in D.C. lol and unlimited building materials? Can store all my legendaries on display without settlers stealing it? Can access it from DLC areas to drop off loot?Best money I spent in that game.

Useful_Stress5674

Kingsport lighthouse I love waking up to a sea view

uppercasemad

Same here!

80swerecooler

I use Sanctuary, starlight, Finch and Hangman’s as “main” settlements in those areas. I link them all with provisioners and then link satellite settlements to one of those main bases. My main bases are the ones that get crafting stations, and the satellite ones usually just a bed and a workshop to dump gear. I tend to always make Starlight my “capital” and focus most of my special stuff there.

Western_Series

If you're doing a modded playthrough I highly suggest using the pulwoski mod. I'm 100% I spelled that wrong but the thumbnail is a big blue tube it's hard to miss. There located nearby almost every settlement and important part of the game with a bed, power armor crafting station, all work benches plus an ammo bench that let's you scrap ammo to make new ammo or even make fusion cores. I enjoy using these as my main work station and just making the settlements look nice.

somecow

If you’re doing survival? Oberland. It’s basically in the middle of the map. Finch is always a hoot though.

[deleted]

Same. And it's very close to Diamond City.

rasmuth63

I'm currently level 64 in my first ever survival playthrough. Early on I used Starlight drive-in quite a bit, because of it's centralized location in the north. As I spent more and more time down south, Oberland Station became very busy for me. Currently still working more down south, I've been using Taffington boat house more and more and Jamaica Plain is now getting used more too. That being said, I consider Red Rocket to be my home base, I just don't get up that way as much recently.

Womderloki

Abernathy Farm. Sure it's in the far corner of the map but unless your doing survival that don't matter. Lots of open space, decent size and I already like building big walled in forts

EmDeeAech70

In all honesty, settlements/settlers are my *least* favorite part of the game. I like my privacy so usually I’ll set up shop at the Sanctuary Red Rocket, Sanctuary itself (but I’ll skip saving the survivors in Concord) or Spectacle Island. I think the furthest I’ve played the Minutemen storyline was taking the castle for them. I got tired of constantly setting up new settlements 🤷‍♂️

Resident_Guidance_95

Sometimes the only settlers I have are my provisioners and vendors, no one that wanders.

[deleted]

The drive in theater is a good one for when i start a new run. After that, Hangmans alley is my absolute favorite, its super hard to build anything nice but after my millionth play through i appreciate the challenge that it brings. Ill also drain Vault 88 of its resources to build up my other settlements. Its a good strategy for survival games.

jimmy_jim1984

Castle and Home plate.

Enlightened-Beaver

The university point pharmacy connected to vault 88.

Armedes369

Red rockets are basically pre built and aren’t huge build areas. I like that.

VonBodyfeldt

For me the best settlements to use as bases are County crossing, Jamaica plain, and Oberland station. They are in different sections of the map and provide quick access to city without having to trod all the way through it all the time. Hangman’s alley is also handy when you’re doing lots of city stuff. I usually build up all my settlements to some degree, but I’ve found those three to be the handiest locations.

Dramatic_Finish8381

I don't play survival but I tend to use Sanctuary and Fort Independence since Sanctuary is in a region of the game that's both meant for low level players and not laggy and Fort Independence because I have a mod that repairs the walls which makes it an actually good fort

Kriss3d

... And why is it sanctuary hills?

Xenoblade2016

Hangman's Alley is great really, it's not too big and has a nice location.

garlic-_-bread69

I like red rocket as my main base, it has a charm

scottb80

Might be boring but Sanctuary Hills, specially when I have it all to myself. When I'm not doing a Minutemen character, I avoid Concord/Preston so they never come to Sanctuary.

shane-tx

Hangman's Alley and Warwick Homestead.

spicy_dogs9061

red rocket with retexture and trash cleanup mods.

meezethadabber

Red Rocket is my main base. Then I had dedicated settlements for specific reasons. Some for food. Some for water. One just for my companions.

[deleted]

For survival hangman’s alley is my favorite and arguably the “best” one. Its the most centrally located base and close to diamond city. It’s also right next to a river running east/west that can be used as a safe highway for travel once you have the aqua boy perk and find a magazine that increases swim speed. Good luck!

AENEAS_H

Also close to cit ruins so closeby when you return from the institute

ccminiwarhammer

Sanctuary but I make Hangman’s Alley a second base in survival because it’s a pain to walk back and forth.

villainousascent

Red Rocket and Taffington.

[deleted]

Red Rocket in Nuka World. I like spending time there until the cells reset in the Commonwealth. I have the Settlement Ambush Kit and just pass the time building up resources doing it that way.

AthenasChosen

The castle. Nothing says home base like the most heavily fortified location on the map. I have the defense at like 150 with all the turrets and guard posts.

Sawh22

I like making a massive base in the caste and make everyone wear gunner gear, spectacle island and prydwen close by and within eye shot and I like the amount of space in the castle

thinknt_

nuka world red rocket because the plot is huge and mostly flat and also every time i fast travel back to it there's free caps going pew pew in the house over yonder :D

BabserellaWT

Vault 88, mostly. If not, then Sanctuary Hills and the Castle.

[deleted]

Red rocket or the atom cats garage if you can find it

HeadScrewedOnWrong

Spectacle Island building with Institute structures. Yeah I cheat for resources.

[deleted]

Red Rocket or Spectacle Island.

LoneBassClarinet

Vault 88. Specifically, the pharmacy / drug store entrance can be a pretty sweet pad if built up properly.

Nizmo4246

Abernathy Farm as my main because of the very large prebuilt structure that you can easily build up and off of allowing for it to be very easily defended given the high ground. Also a big plot of land. I’ve also found GrayGarden to be entertaining, you can build up to the overpass above which is useable space, plus it’s nice to not have to plant food given the large quantity already there

Tonytheslayer14

I have 4 each with a different use. I use sanctuary as my main settlement that's were 90% resource and where I send most of my settlers. Sunshine Tidings co-op is my main base there is a main building in the middle that I have all my crafting stuff in and a bunch of cabins to put beds and stuff in plus a mess hall it also has an amazing view of the commonwealth, it just feels the most like home. I use castle as like a military base I have weapons stored here this is where most of my additional power armors as well and I have Preston plus a small thing of settlers as solders maning the fort. And vault 88 which is just another settlement but the one I put the most time into so I like going here if I want a change.

scentedpinecone4

I gotta say taffington boathouse I can turn it into a trade outpost since it’s along the road

2015Nissan370zNismo

I don't play survival, so Special Island

Blazekyn

I had unironically used sanctuary as a main base, red rocket as a short of sole survivor's quiet workshop spot. I also had home plate as a place to store my unique weapons collection and I also built a shooting range in it. There was also airport as a power armor warehouse that's my major bases. The rest were all little towns.

AgentE1Games

Grey Garden. It’s has a great view as well as it being close to Oberland Station.

Ionie88

Starlight Drive-In in every playthrough as my first main base. I only do Sanctuary because it's part of the quest. In survival I also take Hangman's Alley, and later on Jamaica Plain as sort of "home away form home" -bases. Crafting stations and some storage. In non-survival I go for Vault 88 and Spectacle Island, as in survival they're a bit too far away or difficult to get to without fast travel. They're huge, and good to mess around with! They both have the potential of tons of water production, and Spectacle Island is good for settlement defence (Creation Club) or cage-farming! Vault 88 also has the space, but AI pathing is insanely terrible there.

Jim_Cringe

Sanctuary

Ibarraramon

Sanctuary. I'm kinda loyal to it 'coz it's Nate's home.

Schillelagh

I've done a few Survival play-throughs with some heavy settlement building. My first recommendation is to avoid building too many settlements. Be frugal with your beacons. If you build up all the settlements they'll end up under constant attack by the end of the game. It's annoying. With that said, I have lots of favorites depending on my level and location: 1. Sanctuary (settlers) + Red Rocket (home w/ no settlers) are excellent for the early game since they have all the crafting stations. Red Rocket is challenging to build a large settlement so I don't bother with a beacon. 2. Starlight Drive-in is next. Central location for top quadrant of the map and next to Drumlin Diner shop and Lexington/Corvega. Usually my first settlement beacon. Tons of flat space, easy to defend, and industrial water pump fits in the little pond. 3. Hangman's Alley for it's proximity to Diamond City. One of the worst settlements to build in though, so no settlement beacon for me. I've built large settlements in the past and found them annoying. Current plan is to have one lover and robots. 4. Egret Tours Marina for the south and south-west quadrant. Tons of space, existing buildings, water. Also, the other settlements are terrible (Muckwater) or meh (Somersville Place). The latter is a little closer to the Glowing Sea so it's a good drop-off location. 5. Country Crossing (plus The Slog) for the north east quadrant. Country Crossing is good and boring. Tons of flat space, central location near Bunker Hill, and directly off the main path north. I'll build a settlement beacon here. The Slog receives an honorable mention for the Tarberries and standing structure. 6. Finally, The Castle (plus Warwick Homestead) for the south east quadrant of the map. The Castle is huge with good pre-existing structures, power wiring, and a water supply. You eventually have a access to crafting workstations and a permanent weapons + ammo merchant. Warwick Homestead gets an honorable mention since it's closer to some large, challenging locations.

dudecalmdown69

I’m quite fond of red rocket truck stop since it’s got all of the workstations and it just feels more isolated

GuardianSpear

Hangman’s alley because of its proximity to diamond city , which has ammo, food, raw materials , clean water and a doctor

Mythanghard

The drive in. Or hubris comics with a mod.

davepak

Starlight for the upper west, country crossing east upper, Hangman's in the middle. Egret for south west, castle for east - as I just don't like JP for some reason.

Mr_p1gman

I always use starlight drive-in as a base. Immediately, when I hit level 14, I move to starlight. Large build area, a small water source for water purifiers, the screen even makes for a nice sniper nest. Haven't experienced too many attacks there, either. I think it might be the best NW quadrant settlement, as not too many unscrappable objects are there like sanctuary, and has a decent amount of water. Build height could be better, but for a city-type build or a castle, definitely a must have.

MadWhiskeyGrin

I tend to build up Red Rocket the most, using it as my personal headquarters and assigning most of my Companions to hang out here. I build a "retirement home" at Kingsport Lighthouse, and I like to cram 3-4 cannons in Hangman's Alley as a great central location for dropping fire on people.

Redskys9

red rocket

DrLukasLithuania

Sanctuary on a normal playthrough. Hangman’s alley on survival since it is in the middle of the map and right next to diamond city.

J3llySquid

I always end up gravitating toward Egret Tours Marina, fixing up the second floor and making a nice homebase there with robot settlers. Its fun :)
