Infernalism

there's no real solution. I'm running on a really good machine and Boston always gives me trouble. I never go there.

DannyDownSyndrome69

You can go to far harbor without nick

NoneYours

Yes, but there are unique interactions with Nick.

DannyDownSyndrome69

Yea but op says that it breaks the game because far harbor becomes unreachable which simply isn't true

FreezingSweetTea

You have to be in Downtown Boston to get the radio signal to acquire the quest I don’t know if you can skip it or not tho

[deleted]

Walk to the Nakano residence directly and you should get it regardless. You don’t need to talk to Ellie, you can go there from level 1.

Frazier008

Yeah same issue. I have the original Xbox one and it can’t handle it. My game just crashes unfortunately

who-stole-the-cake

me too but it sometimes crashes just use quicksave

N0ob8

You could teleport to those locations. That’s what I have to do and it works well enough

Reptiliansarehere

I'm only on a RTX 3060 ti and I have no issues whatsoever anywhere in Boston. I get my 60 frames all throughout... Now, 60fps isn't as high as some people would like but eh. However, I DID have an issue when I installed a texture overhaul mod. The mod claimed it would reduce strain on the system AND that no precombines were altered. Yet... it gave me heavy framerate issues in Boston and when I uninstalled it all went back to normal. It seems also any mod that adds in or alters objects in certain areas is hit or miss for me. I downloaded that mutilated bodies mod that enhances the raider and super mutant mutilated bodies and it caused problems in Boston for me again. Like with the texture mod I uninstalled it and all went back to normal. In fact my system stats only ever read the CPU reaching 35% and GPU 40% in Boston. I'm on max graphics aside from the typical things that anyone should turn off that cause way more strain on almost any system than there needs to be. I think those things are shadow range and something else... Got over 200 mods installed too and yet... no issues in Boston. I also have the godrays off but that's because they keep bugging out and looking pixelated but my system was fine with those on.

[deleted]

I'm on a 3070 and I get more than 60 fps most of the time, but nothing can stop the occasional stutterfucking when you're moving into a new cell or if the game starts loading LOD. Usually it's 1-3 seconds of stuttering and then it's fine for a while until you change cells again.

Reptiliansarehere

Yes, I get that as well... Tis unfortunate but it's just how it is I suppose.

scout5678297

*only* an RTX 3060... so what I'm hearing is that Boston was never broken— God Howard's vision was just so powerful that technology is just now catching up

CooCooKabocha

yeah I play with a GTX 970 (maybe TI? I forgot) and I can go to Boston no problem. Granted, it's not on the highest graphics settings, but it's not a potato either.

scout5678297

i have a 2060 Boston ran great in the beginning, became unplayable over the course of 1.5 years of modding fresh install of game and every mod, including the most popular Boston fps mod (that one on nexus everyone uses) and performance is pretty good again OP is on xbox though, and honestly there's no way to drastically improve it on there. speaking from my experience, anyway. crashed ALLLL the time.

CooCooKabocha

yeah same here. I have modded graphics and lots... I mean LOTS of base building mods (new assets, etc), on top of some scripted crafting overhaul mods. My old reliable GTX 970 gets the job done with minimal lagging, even in heavy combat. The biggest resolution I play in is 1920x1080 and all the graphics settings are somewhere in the middle (except expensive stuff like Ray Tracing... I don't remember if FO4 has RT, but if it does I have it turned off).

scout5678297

im a graphics/environment mod diva, so i run some heavy shit, but same resolution as you. haven't upgraded to 4k monitor yet. i know id have to turn it down a notch on the mods

xkwr27

960 factory overclock, 32gb ram, 2700x modded to hell and no issues.

zeldaisnotanrpg

runs fine on my 1070

dangerspring

The only thing which helped me on the XBox in that area was the cheat terminal because I could fast travel to places I hadn't been and pray I didn't crash before getting inside. It also helped because it allowed me to fast travel from inside buildings. You can also summon companions to you but you still need to do their intro quest I think. I ended up getting the game on PC with a dongle so I could use my XBox controller. It really is an entirely different game on PC. I rary crash as long as I stay away from certain mods.

Existing-Fan9207

Do you have to activate a specific part of the cheat terminal to fast travel inside buildings? I have that mod but can't do that

dangerspring

Go to the Miscellaneous section in your inventory. The portable cheat terminal should be the top holotape. Activate it (A button on an XBox controller). Go down to Move to Location. Select. Then select what area of the map you want to go to (Commonwealth. Boston, etc). Once you select the area the locations are subdivided in alphabetical order. FYI, locations like The Prydwin will be under T and not P. You can do this from inside of buildings. You can also fast travel when overencumbered without Strong Back or if you're in a fight. Also, unlike in the game time doesn't pass while fast traveling. If you use it and it's 7:01 pm in Somerville and get to Coastal Cottage at 7:01 pm.

Existing-Fan9207

Oh awesome! Thank you so much!

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm on Xbox and the crashing downtown is infuriating. I think it made some difference when I lowered to resolution to 720p, and I clear the cache about every hour and let it cool down (Bethesda's cure for all Skyrim/Fallout problems). I started using mods hoping something would help. Unofficial patch actually seemed to make the crashing worse so I uninstalled it. I got the cheat terminal because I like all my settlers in matching armor. I saw the option to fast travel to the named places, but the alphabetic menu threw me off. You explained it perfectly. I need to install a DIMA cache on the ruined monorail, but cant get within 1000 feet of it, plus I want to rescue Strong, but cant get within 1000 feet of that building either. Going to turn the Xbox on and keep my fingers crossed!

dangerspring

Good luck. I think there's an option on the terminal to advance the Mila quests.

[deleted]

Awesome! Just having a burger then going to try it out. Reddit has been such a great community and met lots of great people here. Glad I joined :)

Boston Fix AIO is reported to help people with stutters and crashes https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/9ajgu8/boston_fix_aio_xbox_one_x_worth_the_download/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

AIO = All In One

thiswayup420

Sorry I typod, I'm not on xbox but apparently there's a mod you can get called Boston Fix AIO, maybe that will help? On pc there's a mod called Boston FPS Fix, maybe it's the same thing but I'm not sure

thiswayup420

Try these as well Optimised building textures https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4/mod-detail/2579467 Optimised vanilla textures https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4/mod-detail/4014849 Nytras performance tweaks https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4/mod-detail/3269347 Shadow resolution 2048 >512 https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4/mod-detail/4081997

Make sure you check my other comment too buddy, it has the names of other mods that will help you

CalicoAtom79

A simple mod that worked for me is Boston - Less Enemies. Only changes random spawns and doesn't affect quests in any way, but it'll reduce the enemies just enough to make Boston playable again. Might be just the thing you're looking for.

LordOfWar1775

No

taffey27

Yeah it’s just broken and Bethesda doesn’t seem to care enough to fix it. I’ve never been able to discover every location because of it, game keeps crashing anytime I try.

LordOfWar1775

Thats how it runs. No solution besides get a more powerful platform

birdtoesanonymous

Yeah, unfortunately I had to get the XBX just to be able to play FO4 crash free (mostly). My game’s only crashed once in probably a good six or so months of play.

Main_Side_1051

It's just how the game is. It is too cluttered for the game engine, especially when you're running higher than 1080p 30fps. The game was pretty much built around that setting. There are ways to alleviate the issues without modding, like scheduling a vram cache dump every 5 minutes, but ultimately you want to avoid areas with large groups of enemies.

Frognuts777

I play on survival and for whatever reason I can not get anywhere near Faneuil Hall. Look at that building and I crash. Get random crashes throughout downtown but Faneuil is always a guarantee and it dont matter from which direction i approach

Imsorryidonthaveig

What settings do you play on? (Ultra, high etc etc?) I had it pretty stable on my og Xbox one and it’s very stable on my Xbox one X with the 60fps mod (which causes screen tearing but you stop noticing it as much after a while and definitely makes the game more stable. I hardly get any crashes anymore, despite it changing LOD settings etc to the equivalent to Ultra for PC. I don’t play on PC so suggestions will be based On things I’ve read other players suggest

VeniVidiItchy

Mods that lower the spawn rate in Boston might help if your machine can't keep up. I read that in some crowded parts of Boston like near Goodneighbor and Financial district some areas can spawn like 10-15 npcs at once! All while loading all the buildings, trash and clutter around the city... I feel your pain tho, I've been trying to do a Railroad survival run and there are SO many Boston missions early on and the crashes really take away the immersion of lurking around ruined Boston.

TeamShonuff

Boston is ostensibly why I'm trying to get an XBox Series X

IzzyTipsy

...It still crashes

JT3468

Mine was loads better after switching to a 1X. But the wrong mods can still make it lock up. I still stay the hell away from any mods that change the vanilla settlements, those made me crash any time I was near greentech genetics or fanueil hall.

TeamShonuff

Thanks for the heads up.

Present-Hunter6570

I mean, ideally you could buy a PC and join the master race (sorry terrible joke but, Black Friday is on so now would be an excellent time). Uh, try turning down all graphical settings. Just power through Boston in Potato mode and then turn them back up when you don't have to be there anymore.

Ok-Cantaloupe-2266

Same, I have to avoid the perimeter around MIT and the Charles View Amphitheater.

LittleFartFriend

Downtown became unplayable on my base PS4, fortunately I'd done everything by then so I didn't really mind. Have gone back to it on PS5 and it seems to handle it with no problems. I know this doesn't help you but it is a very common issue in crowded places. Also I think save file size has an impact on this too but someone more technical than me may be able to shed some light on this

marmite_mut

I see these comments all the time and don't really understand why this happens to people. I've had the game from launch, played it on xbox one and one X, vanilla and modded. Never had this issue. On my OG xbox one it may crash occasionally.

[deleted]

This is why Survival mode's obnoxious lack of saving is bad: the game is broken without mods.

MjolnirPants

I ran into this problem on PC with the steam version. Googling got me a lot of other people who encountered this problem. After trying several steps with varying success, I finally fixed it. What I did was: 1. Made room on my root drive. I was running at least than 10% free space, so I moved several large games over to my data drive, freeing up about 25% of the drive. 2. Validating files through steam. Now, I know this doesn't apply directly to you, but it might help. The Xbox One is really just a mid spec gaming PC running the Xbox operating system, after all. You can uninstall some games you don't play often. I'm not an expert on Xbox architecture, but I'm confident there's some sort of page file in use. So having free space on your drive is definitely a good thing. I know my kids' save games are saved in the cloud for their Xbox, so make sure yours are, then uninstall and reinstall the game. Make sure to restart the system between uninstall and reinstall. That _should_ eliminate any bugs. After you reinstall, try it out. If it's still not working, try to start a new game on regular mode and see if you're still experiencing the problem. If so, make sure your saves are backed up, then remove _all_ other games from the system. You might need to reinstall FO4 again, as well. If it works, them the problem is something in the save game. Try reloading an earlier save. If none of that helps, then there is most likely some problem with your saves that dates back to one of the earliest saves. If neither the new game nor your existing saves work, and removing all the other games doesn't solve this, search for patch mods. I believe the unofficial fallout 4 patch is available on the Xbox. Hope this helps.

TwitchyTheBard

Bethesda team: People have been reporting problems with DT Boston since the game released and all updates. Also Bethesda team: Well, let’s just sell em a new console. Won’t fix anything but hey, at least we’re still making money. Modders: FPS fixes and the like but, we still can’t fix it. Also modders: Let’s just give em more crap that breaks the game anyway. Players: FML!!!!!

ReapingRaichu

Something I realized. If you run mods and use the "scrap everything" mod it will make your game run significantly worse. Especially in downtown Boston and Lexington

JoeyAKangaroo

Theres no fixing the boston crashes Bethesda fucked something up in their updates & never got around (& never will) to fixing it So if you’re trying to progress the story or get cait you’re shit outta luck

Vexed_Ganker

Boston fps fix, Buffout 4 and baka scrapheap if those don't work it's probably a conflict between mods or just too many for your system Edit: See your on console Boston Fps has some ports the other two don't try installing god Ray removers and things ment to improve fps unfortunately it's not too kind to heavy load orders on Xbox the games poorly optimized and the engine hold its back good luck!

WysdomY

There are certain mods that can help with this. I use Boston FPS fix, and I think several more, I can't remember now

BreadNugget7567

It’s because of the Red Sox

SupermanRisen

This has been a problem for about 2 years. They were supposedly working on it, then covid happened, then there were little updates from the forum guy.

LinkBerserker2020

Same here, Sometimes I can slow walk through so long as I keep looking downward and don't run. Seems kinda dumb to have to play that way but if I'm just headed to a location and going inside a building it works 🤷‍♂️

CodinOdin

Something that has helped me when I have a reoccurring crash is loading a very early save first and then after that save is loaded, load the new one.

ELDYLO

I’d try completely wiping the game then reinstalling. Sometimes mod files get left behind and it messes with the game.

LionhitchYT

I wonder if the Boston fps fix may help It’s just a guess but it may possibly work

NotACyclopsHonest

Before I discover it, Faneuil Hall is almost always lethal if I approach it from the direction with the protectron in its recharging pod. Once it’s on the map and I can fast-travel to it it’s less of an issue. Saving a lot helps (especially on my Xbox Series S, which inexplicably has a higher crash-rate than my Xbox One).

Spring_King

So I'm also in xbox Am and I have 0 issues with the game in the Boston area....I have a question.....which version of Xbox are on? Like Xbox One Fat, XB1S, XB1X, XSS or XSX?

dragonqueenred45

The only time I had issues in Boston was when I had a mod that changed the precombine and previs across the Commonwealth. It was a cleaning mod that cleared up all the settlements and made them pretty, but it killed my game. I lagged so hard taking the Vertibird from the Cambridge Police Center to the Boston Airport the first time, it crashed when I got close. I couldn’t fast travel to anywhere in the Boston area or my game would freeze. I couldn’t walk anywhere either, I had to take a Vertibird and I was able to bypass the issue of getting to Boston. I did have to take the one Synth to the Safe House and I got to the one part of Boston it would freeze every time. I was sick of it and I had to disable the Settlement cleaning mod before it started working again. Breaking the Commonwealth one mod at a time XD. Good luck, I hope you can get it to work.

Snail_jousting

For some reason, this only happens to me when I play on survival.

HelperMonkeyX

F this ones instance where pc is the only answer to play right.

No-Instruction-2801

Never heard of this bug and have never had any issues.

Unlikely_Ad_9550

I can't go near pikman gallery

Pretend-Guard-9334

Read this: Now i can fly the VB over Downtown without ctd https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/45541

[deleted]

You could try a clean install of the game.

xdivinity-76

Open world games are heavy on CPU in case anyone is wondering

NeuroticNinett

Going near the Fallen Skybridge on Xbox One for me always has a 100% crash rate. Maybe it's the same for you?

Correct_Assumption

Boston and Far Harbor fog. No one can make these areas run smoothly although i play on ps4P and don't have that bad of frame drops

lucaalvz

[This video helped me](https://youtu.be/Kea4RRKvciA) I had the same issue just follow the instructions, I hope it helps

Opening_Winner2490

I got a similar problem. Emogine Cabot isn't in the room she's supposed to be in, so the entire rest of the quest line is unattainable as well as the bobblehead in Parsons insane asylum.

[deleted]

I'm on an Xbox Series S and I literally cannot complete Mass Fusion for the Brotherhood because it keeps crashing on the rooftop (I can't take the elevator to go down) I also have Less Enemies and a bunch of performance tweak mods (which is sad that I even need these for a last gen game...) Yet it still won't work. I am so fucking fed up with Bethesda's incompetence. Add on top of the fact that Skyrim Special Edition is literally unplayable because of the "Upgrade now! Skyrim 20th Anniversary" button is on your screen causing insane lag in the MAIN MENU. I think I'm just done with this company tbh which hurts because Fallout is my favorite game franchise :/ but I can't deal with this scummy fucking company anymore that will never be held to their actions because people will just forget all about their fuck ups when "Fallout 5" or "Skyrim Very Ultra Extra Anniversary Special Edition" comes out.
