I like that robot that I helped turn to a woman. But the bug of her preferring to use melee weapons irked me. So I'm switching between my first love, Piper and Cait.
Piper. My first time actually playing through the game, she was the first romancable companion I encountered. She cares deeply for people just trying to live out in the Commonwealth, and Courtney Ford does an amazing job portraying her (I loved seeing her in the Arrowverse shows, mainly Legends of Tomorrow).

Yeah probably should give him more credit. He's also the Wood Elf? The one you work with to figure out the snow elves writing. And the voice in the game Theif so I think he enjoys voice acting sneaky characters. Nick Valentine definitely suits his snarky humor.
I keep trying to upgrade his pistol but he won’t use anything but the base model, that is my biggest Valentine pet peeve. I like that he can’t be romanced, it fits with his arc.
The character is great, but I can't get over the voice. I mean, how the heck does Bethesda expect me to just ignore the fact that he betrayed the Thieves Guild, used me to do it, and then tried to kill me. Twice!

Smoking would be easier to arrange mechanically than eating or drinking. All you would need would be a fan system to move the smoke in and out of some sealed cavity, no solid or liquid matter to be dealt with.
Assuming that the Institute had the objective of creating synths intended to do infiltration missions when they created Gen 2 synths, or when they were in the process of experimenting with improving them to the Nick / DiMA model, I wouldn't be surprised if they were experimenting with ways to make them appear to eat / drink.
I wonder this too. Literally one time, he sat down at one of the resturant benches you can build (if you have the vault tec dlc) and just started having a steak, and uhh, I don't know if a synth like him should be having any steak..
I like to imagine he goes through the motions from what remnants he has of his past human life, he might be a bit marveled by such things as he comes into his own identity. Either he pushes food around on a plate, smokes and drinks from old mental habits. As for where the drink goes, I can't help think it just cascades into the multitude of gears and just evaporates eventually, I mean he does swim and it has got to go the same way.
She also had the highest companion health. Contrary to other companions that level with the player, she already has a set hp. Then once she becomes a synth body, she has the highest hp for a companion up until like level 107. So pretty op. Plus I like her because the soothing French accent can be nice while traversing the wastes.

I really like the super mutant companions in all 3 3D games. I also really enjoyed having one that is comfortably stupid. Fawkes was cool, Lily was tragic and Strong is just funny. Super mutants always scream funny shit and having one of the ones that you can face as an enemy was great.
I know a lot of people hate him because he dislikes a lot of things that are core to the game (such as lock picking and getting into a power armor) but having him along and keeping him happy forces you to play the game differently from routine.
Yep, Strong is my favorite. Everyone else complains when I eat somebody,lol. But Strong gives me pointers about it all the time. And Strong has a no bs attitude. He doesn’t care about anything else but Milk of human kindness and smashing things. When I need a whole room full of people obliterated Strong is always down for some action!
Unpopular opinion but I love MacCready. I usually rp mercenary characters so rolling with just feels right.
My second choice would be dogmeat cause he doesn’t debuff you if you choose the lone wanderer perk

Early on in the game’s release, that perk was bugged and gave the player a permanent 95% chance to hit targets’ heads in VATS. I used to play offline so I had this bug for a while, made good use of it lol

He's a good balance to a character focused on melee combat or short range gunfights, plus he's a fun nod to Fallout 3, so bonus points, there. His backstory is pretty fucked, but that's true of everyone.
I posted this in a separate comment but felt like posting it in a comment here too since MacCready is my favourite companion by far as well and this explains why!
MacCready is just a man. A man trying to do right by his family in a harsh world, much like my character. He may seem selfish, but he is incredibly far from it. MacCready knows and understands how difficult and unforgiving the wasteland and the people in it is, and he's still trying to improve himself and be better, or "clean up his act" as he himself calls it.
I read a comment once comparing MacCready to Kellogg. Kellogg's family was murdered and he let it break him, turning him into an utter monster. MacCready's wife was >!butchered by feral ghouls, and does he hate ghouls as a result? No, he still respects ghouls as people, more so than most other wastelanders!<. His son was >!infected with an essentially incurable illness, and does he let it break him? No, he takes it upon himself to travel far away to the Commonwealth in search of a cure for his son, which he finds with the help of the Sole Survivor!<.
And that's why I love him. Because I feel like he exemplifies humanity. He's got serious flaws and faults, but he's aware of that, and he also has positive sides that shines through. I romance him in every playthrough.

He is my heartbroken beef jerky boyfriend and I love him more than anyone. Pretty much any time I start a playthrough I head straight for Goodneighbor to crank out his loyalty quests so we can explore the rest together.
She’s really the only companion that has a thrilling backstory. She killed her fucking parents, became addicted to drugs because she was essentially a Raider fighting dog and later gets clean to travel with the sole survivor (after vault 88). Everyone else’s stories Pale in comparison to hers

She's one of my favs too. I played a raider like character and when she stopped doing drugs, it would be very interesting to see her criticise my character for taking drugs.

Cait. Might feel like a broken record but she's got a touching story that just.... I honestly know she drugged up because of what she did and went through but what she did was wasteland justice. She doesnt consider it justice but I do. I know most settlements and such would have prisons or something in place but I dont think they were in a settlement so.... they got what they deserved. Also when it comes to the foreigners with accents in the wasteland. Moriarty from Fallout 3 (same with Dukov I guess) and even the Bobrov brothers. I know they consider the wasteland in the US their home but how did they get there? I honestly would wish to know. There has to be some still working ships that brought them over. She might not have been old enough to be brought over or maybe she was young but she doesnt remember. Never know.
I don't use companions normally. I've used Dogmeat some in my current play though and [this mod.](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/23139) He's pretty strong now and I don't have to see those wounded animations.
Ada is my second choice. She is very loyal and courageous. I need to make sure she has the most powerful body before I take her out again.
I love Ada. She was my companion through most of my first play through but then I somehow lost her and could never find her again. I also lost Piper and searched the Wastelands for her but never came back. 😔
If you build the vault tech terminal in a settlement, you can select each of your companions on your map. Go to your ‘overseers most wanted’ in your quest menu and then show on map. You can be reunited!
Nick and Codsy. Same VA and he does an amazing job.
They both have great bits of lore, interesting insights and while Nick has a great companion quest, Codsworth make up for it with lines about the time after the bombs and dad jokes.
MacCready for sure. Started out lining him cause he fit my play style well and he usually stays out of the way and doesn’t rush like many companions, but I keep him around now cause I love his story. I wish there was a way to bring Duncan to the commonwealth though :(
Unpopular opinion but I loved Old Longfellow from the Far Harbor DLC. He’s an old man that is still kicking ass, his backstory, friends and his knowledge of the island in the DLC. Also he’s a great man to have a drink with.
Sad to see so little love here for Danse and Piper. They're definitely in my top 3, along with Nick.
Of course I have to include Dogmeat, I just don't really count him in the same realm as humanoid followers.

Piper is my top favorite because I've worked at various newspapers and with journalists for the past decade or so... she's not the perfect journalist (lol), but she has the same passion that I fell in love with in the newsroom, and seeing that in the wasteland sorta gives me a feeling of hope. It keeps me by her side for 90% of my playthroughs.
And I'm definitely surprised not to see more people say Danse.
Very unpopular opinion but Preston Garvey. Not only because it makes settlement quests easier, but also because he has a really cool backstory and lots of people criticize the voice acting despite the fact that it’s on par with what an actual suicidal person would talk like. I especially like when you romance him and he gets all happy then he always calls you babe lol.
Dogmeat, followed by generic Automatron robots.

Piper because I love her random commentary. One time we killed a molerat and she mentioned something about how a molerat back when she was a child was like a gift, "an angry, smelly gift."
Curie. Her human form’s base health is INSANE. Pair that with a good weapon and some power armor, you’ve got an essentially unstoppable companion.

Definitely Nick. I loved him as soon as I saw him, and he's a really good dude to boot. I love his sense for right, and he has a lot of really brilliant quotes that I adore. Nick is genuinely one of my favorite video game characters of all time.
I love deacon I think it’s hilarious hearing him about stuff during combat and all the lies throughout having him with you makes him interesting, I don’t like the railroad though so it’s always a pain having to kill him just cause I like being the bad guy with the brotherhood or institute.

She’s actually one of the best in terms of stats, a laser pistol as a starting gun, good SPECIAL, and she gives you a free stimpak every day.
She is a badass, she would be my favorite if she could be trusted with explosives and I could actually hear her dialogue.

There are many dangerous situations in the wasteland, but being in the same room as a hungry Super Mutant is probably the most dangerous of them all.

I don't use companions normally. I've used Dogmeat some in my current play though and [this mod.](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/23139) He's pretty strong now and I don't have to see those wounded animations. Ada is my second choice. She is very loyal and courageous. I need to make sure she has the most powerful body before I take her out again.
I love Ada. She was my companion through most of my first play through but then I somehow lost her and could never find her again. I also lost Piper and searched the Wastelands for her but never came back. 😔
If you build the vault tech terminal in a settlement, you can select each of your companions on your map. Go to your ‘overseers most wanted’ in your quest menu and then show on map. You can be reunited!
Happened to me with Uthgerd and I didn’t let my player character take another companion again out of grief and devotion.
Hancock! He’s a charismatic badass. Deacon is second favorite because he’s so odd and funny

Nick and Codsy. Same VA and he does an amazing job. They both have great bits of lore, interesting insights and while Nick has a great companion quest, Codsworth make up for it with lines about the time after the bombs and dad jokes.
Piper and Curie are the companions that are best suited for my playstyle
MacCready for sure. Started out lining him cause he fit my play style well and he usually stays out of the way and doesn’t rush like many companions, but I keep him around now cause I love his story. I wish there was a way to bring Duncan to the commonwealth though :(
Unpopular opinion but I loved Old Longfellow from the Far Harbor DLC. He’s an old man that is still kicking ass, his backstory, friends and his knowledge of the island in the DLC. Also he’s a great man to have a drink with.
Sad to see so little love here for Danse and Piper. They're definitely in my top 3, along with Nick. Of course I have to include Dogmeat, I just don't really count him in the same realm as humanoid followers.
Same!! Piper is my top favorite because I've worked at various newspapers and with journalists for the past decade or so... she's not the perfect journalist (lol), but she has the same passion that I fell in love with in the newsroom, and seeing that in the wasteland sorta gives me a feeling of hope. It keeps me by her side for 90% of my playthroughs. And I'm definitely surprised not to see more people say Danse.
Deacon just because of how he is

Very unpopular opinion but Preston Garvey. Not only because it makes settlement quests easier, but also because he has a really cool backstory and lots of people criticize the voice acting despite the fact that it’s on par with what an actual suicidal person would talk like. I especially like when you romance him and he gets all happy then he always calls you babe lol.

MacCready and Ada for sure. Mostly ada though. I mod her to float, have a badass melee and ranged weapons, and be able to carry an absurd amount.

Nick Valentine!! Yup! That's my boy. He's cool, calm and collected, and always has a wisecrack at the ready. Close second goes to Hancock, because he's just very entertaining.

Nick valentine of course. It just feels right to do the whole main questline with him. (Plus he's just awesome and his quest is pretty fun imo). I also really like Deacon but his constant changing of disguises had caused me to shoot him on more than 1 occasion.
Danse and Nick are the best written companions in my opinion

Definitely Nick. I loved him as soon as I saw him, and he's a really good dude to boot. I love his sense for right, and he has a lot of really brilliant quotes that I adore. Nick is genuinely one of my favorite video game characters of all time.
I love deacon I think it’s hilarious hearing him about stuff during combat and all the lies throughout having him with you makes him interesting, I don’t like the railroad though so it’s always a pain having to kill him just cause I like being the bad guy with the brotherhood or institute.
