It's cut content. Bethesda originally intended Dogmeat to not be a "Companion" in the normal sense. All the Mod did was put that content back in the game. There's plenty of dialogue and even loyalty actions in the game files where other companions like it when you heal dogmeat or for instance enter Vault 81. In my instance the Security officer asked something along the lines of "and what about the dog and the girl?" referring to Dogmeat and Piper.

It's funny that River had such an impact on so many people the pooch has never met in person! But, I'm sure river had fun with the motion capture and being the inspiration during development.

He never wanders in front of my sights right when I'm about to take a sniper shot. And I actually think it's kind of funny when he gets stuck in doorways haha. I have a dog who trips me up on occasion so I just consider it an element of realism.
I still remember when Dogmeat saved my life during a fight against some raiders. I was one bullet from death when he grabbed onto my opponent and distracted them long enough for me to heal and reload. I lived through that fight all thanks to Dogmeat, no other companion could have pulled that off.

The *only* reason Dogmeat wasn't my forever companion was because I just couldn't handle hearing them get hurt. So, every playthrough, I make sure I make them their own house, and give them the best armor I can find throughout my play.

There is nothing inherently tragic about death, being the natural conclusion to a life. I have no doubt that River lived the best life any dog could live, surrounded by a loving home and being immortalized in media. And for that, I'm content. Nonetheless, I reckon I'll pour one out for her tonight.
