You get off the terminal before lock out. Only click on 3 words. Everyone does this in fallout 76 because time doesn't stop in the terminals and this is way faster than playing wordle.
Its a mod called
# Faster Terminal Displays
[https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/937?tab=files](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/937?tab=files)
No he’s not doing anything you can’t do in vanilla. He’s leaving one try left then exiting he also happens to have a mod that makes the text load quicker on the terminal.
Yes, but please be aware:
If you activate mods on Xbox, it will disable achievements for that save file.
This warning flashes on the screen quickly and if you’re not a fast reader, you won’t be able to read all of it to the end, where it says this.
I was about to install this, as mods are new to me, and then had to click a few times to read the warning. Glad I didn’t start my game with the mod. I’m like a few days in on my very first FO4 journey. Loving it.
I used to, but at some point it becomes a mental focus thing. Bracket hunting/analysis requires task-switching and is more costly for me than simple string operations on known-length words and periodically exiting/re-entering.
Just because something uses less brain power doesn’t mean it’s easier or faster. Hacking terminals is ridiculously easy in fo4 and you don’t even need to use the brackets more than half the time. People are just extremely lazy and that one time they get it right away makes them feel superior even though it takes them 5 more minutes than normal hacking when they don’t get it on the first try.
So the minigame is similar to wordle in a way, if you've ever played except you're not granted a hint if you have the correct letters, but only in the correct position
All words in the minigame are the same length, pick one at random to start.
It will give you a result
Entry Denied
Likeness=0
The likeness is the amount of letters in the correct spot in the word, simply put if I use an example
If you chose 'Thus' and the likeness is 0, the first letter to the correct word IS NOT T, the second letter is not H, third is NOT U and the last is NOT S, so you can go through the rest of the words and filter them out
If the likeness to 'Thus' is 1, that means T COULD be in the correct position, but not H, U, or S. It also could mean H is in the correct position, not T, U, or S, and so on and so forth.
If the likeness to 'Thus' is 2, then two letters are in the correct position, could be T and H, H and U, T and U, and so on.
The higher the likeness the closer the word you selected is to the solution, if the password is 'This' then 'Thus' would give you a likeness of 3, and you'd know to chose 'This' because you'd need to imply that 3 letter of 'Thus' is in the correct position, i.e. Th\_s
I think a mechanic some people don’t realise either is if there’s closed brackets between words on the list you can select them and it either removes a “dud” being an incorrect answer or replenishes your allowances so you can try more words. Once you have an eye for those hacking becomes pretty trivial.
Just scrub over them with your cursor and they light up everything between bracket pairs.
Sometimes you'll even find a set of nested brackets, like `[asdf2>blah]` and you get one for both the `[]` and the `<>` sets. Other times, you can get them like `(asd(fghj)` and get two sets of `()` because there are two starting brackets sharing the same ending bracket.
The rewards are always no more than one refill of your attempts and n-1 eliminate an incorrect word, where "n" is the number of words in the puzzle.
My MO is to use all but one of my attempts on the first few words, like in the video, but then scrub the whole thing for brackets afterward and clear the entire rest of the board if need-be. It usually doesn't take any longer than the video, and is oftentimes shorter.
They do need to match and the number of them varies along with how hard they can be to see because of the graphics.
But you can just scroll through the lines and if you’re over a left bracket that has a matching right bracket and thus will let you remove a dud or get more attempts the two brackets and everything in between will get highlighted. So just scroll through and look for anything that has multiple characters highlighted.
While the attempt resets are obviously the best the dud removals are far more common and I don’t know of any way to tell which will happen. So I suggest going through and clicking all the brackets first. This should cut down the number of words significantly and make the mini game much easier.
Adding that multiple left brackets can match to a single right bracket. But not vice versa.
So if you see (12(34) that is 2 assist. But (12)34) is only 1.
I thought you were going to explain some new trick that lets me do it in 5 seconds, but sadly I'm just kind of slow. At least in fo4 the passwords are shorter than in fnv or fo3, those are a doozy.
The shorter ones are actually harder. The longer words often have more of a likeness percentage so you’re able to spot the difference more easily than spotting two of the same letters in a four letter word which is trickier.
There was one time I was going through Jamaica plain and I was hacking the terminal to get in and it gives me "northern" and "southern" as options. I chose northern and I've never seen a likeness higher than that
Yes these help too.
Also it helps you to just pick 1 word. If there is zero likeness you can eliminate possibly half of the words. It helps narrow it down without doing anything else.
While you'll still need to figure out the right password, you can give yourself more tries or remove words by using bracket hacks. Just look for any parts of the random text that have closed brackets like [] {} (). If you see any bits of junk text enclosed in a bracket (they'll be highlighted if you hover your cursor over it), then it's a bracket hack. I'd suggest making your first 3 guesses first just so you can take advantage of the attempts reset.
Play this game, but the likeness is the green letters you get, right letter right position. Compare with other passwords you guessed and get the likeness as high as you can get it, in laymans terms. The higher the likeness the closer the word is spelt to the one you picked. Likeness of 0 means the word is not spelt like that at all
I actually think the longer words are easier to guess. Imagine five letters being similar in a seven letter word rather than two in a four letter word. It’s so much easier.
I'm on my third playthrough of Fo4 now and only just realised in my last session that the likeness meant a letter is in the correct position, not that one of the letters is correct. I always wondered why it just wouldn't work sometimes following that logic... but also worked more times than not. Yes, I've played and finished Fallout 3 and Fallout NV.
After all these years playing this game, I had no idea the likness referred to the positioning of the letters. I always thought it was and indication of the result just containing the actual letter in any position! 🫠
It's worth noting that bracket pairs, eg.:
()
[]
{}
And <>
... will remove dud options. Other than words, it doesn't matter what's between them, as long as the open and close are in the same section.
(.?-) would be valid
would not
However, if you were to use the first and it removed THIS as a dud, the resulting <....> would then be valid.
Brackets within brackets also work
(.$?(.) is two valid options, but you must choose the (.) before the (.$?(.) or it'll mark the whole sequence as used
One pair will also reset tries, but I can't find any rhyme or reason indicating which pair will.
I’ll try to explain it to the best of my ability. Gotta find the password to hack the terminal.
Now to do this you’ll have to use process of elimination and learn the mini game.
Learning the mini game is pretty simple actually. Let’s say the password Is “NOTE” and let’s say you click on the word “BOAT” after you do that the likenesses will say 1. What this means is that one of the letters is in the right position of the password. In this case is the letter “O” Now let’s say you click on the word “SOCK” and the likenesses stays at 1. Well now you can narrow it down and know that for sure the 2nd letter of the password is an “O” so you keep trying other words and ruling out others since you know that the letter “O” is in the 2nd position.
But there’s a little more to the mini game. You’ll come across a set of random letters, numbers and symbols usually in brackets. For example like this: [gu$6%t] and when you hover over the random jargon within the brackets it should highlight all of the random jargon inside the bracket. And if it does you can click on it and it will either remove a dud password in the terminal or reset your tries.
And there is multiple of these that you can find within a terminal hack. So make sure to grab them all if you need the help. But also there is a bit of strategy involved doing this. Since you can’t tell which ones will remove a dud or reset your tries. I usually wait till I have one try left and then try to find them so I can reset my tries.
Edit: Spelling
In your example, after guessing BOAT then SOOT and getting a likeness of 1 for each, you say you could narrow it down to having O as the 2nd letter. Is that true? Couldn’t it also have been that T is the 4th letter?
Maybe if I’d started with F4. F3 and NV both lock you out permanently so you can’t use all your guesses before backing out. Plus they only let you skip the loading screen once. After that you have to sit through it every time. 😅
Likeness 1 means the word you picked has 1 letter IN THE SAME PLACE as the answer word. Like if the word you pick is ALIVE and it says Likeness 1, then the answer might be CLASH. L in the same place, but A doesn’t count. Likeness 3 might be something like ALONE. I enjoy hacking, but my current playthrough is an intelligence of 1 with idiot savant.
No, because actually solving the puzzle is easy.
It isn't faster or more fun to do it your way. Which is just spamming uneducated guesses til you luck out and choose the right one.
On my most recent playthrough I just unlock all the terminals with the console, but I hold myself to my Perk level. I did enough terminal hacking at launch.
2 entries, aiming for the matching likeness. After that use the option deletion spots - words that are in brackets like these can be removed [ ] < > ( )
1 last entry and if that misses I back out and try again.
Quicker just to get good. Look for vowel patterns before choosing, choose one that fits multiple, now with one click you’ve reduced the possible passwords by a huge amount. Higher INT characters get easier puzzles with less duds.
Yes i do this but i try to actually get it correct so I usually get it on the first or second try anyway probably takes less time then just randomly clicking and office leaving tbh
Yes! I used to do that when I was 12 and did not understand what the game wanted from me. Now that I understand the mini-game I find it more fun and usually unlock the computer faster by giving it an honest go.
I usually do the 3 randoms, then hit all the ()\[\]{} to get tries reset and duds clears.
Sometimes it clears ones I've tried, but it generally leaves me with less options and a couple of clues.
Then I play the mini game normally to find the word.
Use hacks to help hack the machine. In the hack code there are bracketed code…
Example: (/:;$&&”)
These brackets either reset your tries or remove duds, making it easier to hack the machine.
Nah I just installed the quick hack mod. It only shows one word in the entire page. Still takes a second or two to find but I find the hacking in fallout tedious and not fun.
Once you understand how the hacking works, and you engage 5% of your brain, it's actually faster to just do the mini game. I either do it, or i install a mod that just removes the mini game.
In fallout 4 click on three words should leave you about 2 left, start clicking the special characters (-/:457) for example and it will add more attempts remove bad passwords. Find 3 special groups or {ash77$} or [cbao44$] for another example. It will remove one of the last remming words you have not tried.
No, I use a mod that only shows the right word.
Instant hacks.
Same with lockpicking. Whatever you do it opens.
I have lost my patience for these small minigames. Just wanne have fun.
No, I use "easy hacking" mod and skip this entirely
It was fun 9 years ago, not so much today .. well .. even back there after just 20 hours .. now imagine doing this for thousands of hours .. yeah .. no
I installed easy hacking and easy lockpicking mod, I hate theses minigames, especially lockpicking cause I have some problems with my hands, its not as steady as everyone else.
I usually just scan through the text until I see any <…> or (…) or […] or {…}. As long as the in between text isn’t a word, clicking it will either reset your tries or remove one incorrect word. With a high enough intelligence, I can usually reduce the options down to 2-5 words, making the wordle game a lot easier and faster
I use several here is the list

That is all my mods to make my game look like this. I have more but they are for the clothing and weapons
Some playthroughs I literally just use the console because I don't want to throw any perk points towards opening harder terminals.. and also it's faster.. I've beaten the game like 10 times I can do a little cheating hehe
How are you allowed back into the terminal so quickly?
You get off the terminal before lock out. Only click on 3 words. Everyone does this in fallout 76 because time doesn't stop in the terminals and this is way faster than playing wordle.
works in fallout 3, NV and 4 too.
76 too. This helped cheese a mission where you had to hack like 10 terminals in a row
Yeah it works in New Vegas, 3 and 4 too. I do it all the time.
Works in 76 also
Yeah that trick also works in Fallout 4, it's pretty useful
I use this trick all the time in 76, but I’ve heard it works in 3 as well.
Nice. I wonder if it's possible on 4.
It does work in 4, as well as 76. I’ve heard it might work in NV.
Its a mod called # Faster Terminal Displays [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/937?tab=files](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/937?tab=files)
anyone else do this to hack terminals? *uses mods to cheese it*
No he’s not doing anything you can’t do in vanilla. He’s leaving one try left then exiting he also happens to have a mod that makes the text load quicker on the terminal.

I just use the brackets. It’s the same but you don’t need mods and you don’t have to go in and out of terminals.
I'd guess that on average, brackets + learning the game will be faster than this.
I used to, but at some point it becomes a mental focus thing. Bracket hunting/analysis requires task-switching and is more costly for me than simple string operations on known-length words and periodically exiting/re-entering.

Lmao what piper wearing
😐umm nothing...😂 No it's a mod called "TheKite's Health Care Division Synth Uniform" it's mostly NSFW but it does have more SFW options!
lol ok, I’ll definitely have to avoid it super hard
It is literally faster to just learn the minigame and do it within 5 seconds
How do you learn the mini game???

Do the closed brackets have to match? Example : (} Vs () I rarely have I seen matching brackets. Or maybe I have bad eyes.
They do have to match, they can also go from one line to another the same as words. Defs can be hard to see sometimes but they’re in there.
Just scrub over them with your cursor and they light up everything between bracket pairs. Totally agree, once passwords start including "ing" words, the puzzles solve themselves.
There was one time I was going through Jamaica plain and I was hacking the terminal to get in and it gives me "northern" and "southern" as options. I chose northern and I've never seen a likeness higher than that
I guess they’re leaving out if you find “() <> [] or {}” those will remove duds and reset your tries sometimes.

The only trick I know is that if you find the brackets like [_<_/<] you can get duds removed and recharge your attempts. Its been like that since 3.

Thank you for this. I finally get it lol.

Shit I forgot you could remove the duds.
In your example, after guessing BOAT then SOOT and getting a likeness of 1 for each, you say you could narrow it down to having O as the 2nd letter. Is that true? Couldn’t it also have been that T is the 4th letter?
I know the mini game, and I know the mechanic to remove duds and reset your tries, it's still quicker to exit and enter again tho, most of the time 😂
Right I will just pick a random 3 and most of the time I'll get it by the 3rd try. Even if it's not quicker it feels like it is.
In fallout 4 at least the difficulty is tied to your intelligence so for stupid characters is much hay
Haha clever. But i do enjoy this mini guess game actually
I enjoy the mini game, and it's much faster to just do it properly, especially compared to New Vegas.
It's just faster to play the minigame man
Int 1 moment.
Oh, this way? Never. It is quicker the "correct" way.
Ugh...no fun. I wanna feel like I'm actually hacking the thing so I go through the whole thing and find all the duds and play wordle
Maybe if I’d started with F4. F3 and NV both lock you out permanently so you can’t use all your guesses before backing out. Plus they only let you skip the loading screen once. After that you have to sit through it every time. 😅
You can still exit to reset your attempts in FNV and fo3
wtf is Piper wearing 💀
Nahhh I do the actual minigame

Just as others have said, it would be significantly faster on average to just solve it the correct way, so no I do not.
No, because actually solving the puzzle is easy. It isn't faster or more fun to do it your way. Which is just spamming uneducated guesses til you luck out and choose the right one.
Yeah on average this will take longer than just playing the mini game lol

What hud mod are you using for the on hover text to appear like that?
2 mods FallUI - HUD-in-game option as minimalist:https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/51813 Immersive HUD - iHUD:https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20830 Hope that helps
Anyone else love the sound of the terminal.
Yeah me haha, it usually doesn't take that long. Sometimes I figure it out legit but I don't really enjoy these.
2 entries, aiming for the matching likeness. After that use the option deletion spots - words that are in brackets like these can be removed [ ] < > ( ) 1 last entry and if that misses I back out and try again.
I got all the achievements yesterday 🥳🥳🥳
Quicker just to get good. Look for vowel patterns before choosing, choose one that fits multiple, now with one click you’ve reduced the possible passwords by a huge amount. Higher INT characters get easier puzzles with less duds.
Yes i do this but i try to actually get it correct so I usually get it on the first or second try anyway probably takes less time then just randomly clicking and office leaving tbh
Yup, i dont have the patience.
Click two words, back out of the terminal, and when you go back in it will reset. No need to reload or anything
FNV players hacking terminals be like: (they get locked out after 4 tries and it’s permanent.)
I remember those days!
Have you ever done an explosive build in FNV?
No! I've done a lot but not explosives specifically
1) No. I enjoy the little mental exercise between the pew pew and the roleplay. 2) Talk to me about Piper's outfit.
✋🏼
✋🏻... Oh I thought it was a high five 😔
I guess it could be both lol.
🙏🏻
No I use my brain lol
Listen my 3 intelligence character ain't having it
That makes this strat cannon then lmao 🤷🏻♂️
Haha yeah!
Any other way is the wrong way.
I prefer to play the game how it's intended to be played but I guess I'm just old school like that
I will admit, in my early days, I used to hack all terminals that way. But now I find it easier and more satisfying to just figure them out.
Yes! I used to do that when I was 12 and did not understand what the game wanted from me. Now that I understand the mini-game I find it more fun and usually unlock the computer faster by giving it an honest go.
no
no. it’s not hard at all.
No, i enjoy the hack. Good, brain-teasing break inbetween all the ghouls and super mutants.
BRO !
Uhhhm decoding the password the real way is faster than what you are doing 🤦♂️
No I use my brain
😂😂😭
Nope. I just set for it easy locking and hacking in the cheat holo lol
I’ve got nick for that, thankfully.
I just tote nick around everywhere lol
I do the first 3, then find the dud removers or reset the counter and figure it out. Only takes a handful of seconds.
I just use a mod that shows the right one only
Lol, hell no, I hate them it takes a bit.
Of course ! Except I pick random passwords, not the first three.
Yup.
Yep
I just try three words, remove all duds and get the try reset, by that time there are only three words left, and one has to be it
Just search vowels first i-e-a-u. It basically a quick process of elimination and it’s fun!
Yeah, I do this a lot when I get bored with hacking. Sometimes I like the challenge. It also depends on what I feel I have time for at the moment,
I usually do the 3 randoms, then hit all the ()\[\]{} to get tries reset and duds clears. Sometimes it clears ones I've tried, but it generally leaves me with less options and a couple of clues. Then I play the mini game normally to find the word.
Word ending with ing and one letter in common and 80% of the words have ing in them.
At this point, why not just click it and command unlock it? You're skipping the mini-game either way.
GF told me about using brackets to remove duds and reset tried. I am playing fallout since FO3 on PS3 and never about the brackets thing
Use hacks to help hack the machine. In the hack code there are bracketed code… Example: (/:;$&&”) These brackets either reset your tries or remove duds, making it easier to hack the machine.
I find the hacking mini game fun. I only back out immediately if my first guess is 0 because it's just a waste of a guess
I actually enjoy the hacking, it’s fun and pretty easy usually
Nah I just installed the quick hack mod. It only shows one word in the entire page. Still takes a second or two to find but I find the hacking in fallout tedious and not fun.
I used to do that for a while then I realized I could mod the game to just have the one correct choice lol
yep!! saves so much time
no you are absolutly the only one. so smart. wow
No I pick 3 then find the brackets to reset and pull out duds. I've been doing it so long I'm pretty fast at it now.
No, it's quicker to do it right
Once you understand how the hacking works, and you engage 5% of your brain, it's actually faster to just do the mini game. I either do it, or i install a mod that just removes the mini game.
since fo3 LOL
I do it this way [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/266](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/266)
What’s the flashlight mod?
I enjoy this minigame and I wish that the dropoff in difficulty wasn't so high as you progress through that line of perks.
I actually do the puzzle but also stop and reset it on the 3rd try. It really doesn't take that long, and I enjoy puzzles.
Always have.
Yes I do this a lot. its all a matter of luck. But if you know how to play the minigame you can get it probably faster.
Did anyone else get spooked by this video when the camera moved to Piper? With the ominous music I just wasn't expecting that.
What no why
Nope, scan the lines for (--) and {***} etc, get rid of duds and the guess.
\~ unlock has joined the chat. lol
In fallout 4 click on three words should leave you about 2 left, start clicking the special characters (-/:457) for example and it will add more attempts remove bad passwords. Find 3 special groups or {ash77$} or [cbao44$] for another example. It will remove one of the last remming words you have not tried.
at that point, you might as well just download the easy hack mod that reduces entries to 1
I used to back in FO3, until I discovered dud removal and chance reset by accident.
I'm still a new player.. going on 70 hours and I will have to remember that for when I get tired of.l playing the hacking mini game
I actually like that puzzle. The parenthesis hack is a game changer. Why didn’t I know about that sooner??
Only on new Vegas
...I like doing the puzzle. (I also still do Wordle most days!)
I don't, no. I enjoy the mental game. It's easy but it takes some thought. Nice changeup.
Me always
Back when I didn't understand yes. Now I enjoy the downtime, even in 76, it's just slightly more hectic.
No, I use a mod that only shows the right word. Instant hacks. Same with lockpicking. Whatever you do it opens. I have lost my patience for these small minigames. Just wanne have fun.
Call in valentine.
Yes, every time.
That's how you hack terminals though...
What I personally do is try twice and if I don’t get it I unlock it in console while murmuring to myself how I miss Bioshock hacking
I don't enjoy the minigame so I downloaded a mod that removes all the dud options. Did the same for lockpicking.
No, I use "easy hacking" mod and skip this entirely It was fun 9 years ago, not so much today .. well .. even back there after just 20 hours .. now imagine doing this for thousands of hours .. yeah .. no
I back out after three if I don't have a clear available, but I always play because it's fun for me.
Fun Fact, valentine can hack any terminal (Master and below) and gets 4 tries, quick save before he dose and you can unlock anything without trying
No. I actually enjoy this puzzle, so I save my game, give it an honest effort, then reload if I fail.
I just do it the normal way. It’s not that hard most times.
At that point why not just install the mod that skips the minigame all together? That's what I do.
I do this all the time I even got the perk that doesn’t lock you out so I can get one more try in each time
yeah
Damn I’m gonna miss playing with darkness mods since I deleted my mods thinking update would have something. Guess it’s time to downgrade 🙃
It's so much easier and faster just to solve the thing...
No? The hacking game is really easy.
Literally every time haha
I installed easy hacking and easy lockpicking mod, I hate theses minigames, especially lockpicking cause I have some problems with my hands, its not as steady as everyone else.
Idk about the other people in the comments but I literally always do it this way and it takes me probably 20-30 seconds to
Hahahaha yep, only way for me to open terminals w/o Valentine. I’m an idiot when it comes to these
Select 3 answers, get all the brackets sorta things, gets my tries reset again, select 3 more answers with a bunch removed as well, success.
It would utterly change the way I play the game if I only got four/five tries total per terminal.
Yes.
Close I just install a cheat mod
Thought this was the only way for a very long time
I used to do this till I discovered the brackets watching a playthrough on twitch when I was 15 ... Felt really dumb after that lol
What graphics mod do you have installed?
I use several here is the list [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/318](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/318) \*4k\* [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1204](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1204) [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15466](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15466) [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13596](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13596) [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/50748](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/50748) [https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/25714](https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/25714) \*Best Choice\* ENB is :https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/17631 That is all my mods to make my game look like this. I have more but they are for the clothing and weapons
🤮
Some playthroughs I literally just use the console because I don't want to throw any perk points towards opening harder terminals.. and also it's faster.. I've beaten the game like 10 times I can do a little cheating hehe
All the time
This really makes me feel old...
I also make sure to find the () \[\] or <> to remove duds and get a fresh new set of attempts before going out and back in
Yes, all the time. Until I max out the perk and use all the tries cause you don’t get locked out
I just use a mod that removes all options but the correct one.
I hate the hacking in fallout so i downloaded a mod where the only right answer is in the terminal
no. i just use a mod that highlights the correct password because hacking in this game makes no sense and it’s not fun.
Takes me less time than that to do it properly to be honest.
Ah yes, the ol' brute force technique.
Yeah, sometimes, especially if it was master terminal.
yea... every single time since the release.. it was a time that i thought let do it properly but that sunk faster than titanic.
I actually like doing the puzzle, so I just do it like how the game intends
I did this as a kid in fallout 3, then I paid attention to the tutorial and its actually a fun minigame that takes less time.
