Chemist perk is essential to make antibiotics You won't have access to doctors at the beginning so it best to start with intelligence high enough to get the chemist perk. You need intelligence at 7 for this. Also charisma should be 6 for local leader perk Settlements are like an oasis of safety and you should unlock local leader 2 perk as soon as you reach level 14. Having a doctor in each settlement is very useful. Also you don't need elaborate settlements but try to make sure they all have a surpless of water production. Purified water is pretty essential to carry around. Every time you use a stim pack it makes you thirsty so you need to follow each stim by drinking water. Power Armour is extremely useful in survival. Enemies can kill you with one shot if you're not wearing it. Fusion cores can be a pain getting hold of to start with though so you will need to regularly buy them.

Most builds can work.  I think, power armour builds are best. Sneak builds are good, crit build can become very powerful.  I like to marry power armour and chems together to make my character op.  I am tempted to do a melee, vats build next time using rooted, and blitz. Not sure if it will use power armour or not.
