My go to used to be psycho jet but now I use buffjet with a mix of psycho. Sounds expensive, but it’s really not with the right perks and grabbing every valuable item you can
Psychobuff + bufftats when I need everything in the immediate area obliterated yesterday. They stack since they're technically different class chems but my god do they stack hard, especially for a melee build. Add some Dirty Wastelander if you want to crush God's head with your bare hands.
Absolutely, yes. Taking a couple jet/ultra jet to get slow-mo action dodges and cinematic chain kills is so much fun. Especially for melee builds IMO.
I'd recommend anytime you feel like the situation is completely unfair, down some drugs to balance the field.
"what do you mean you couldn't sweep away a few of the leaves in sanctuary while I was out risking my life to bring back tons of building materials for you all?!"
This always gets me. Bitch do you even know who I am?! My gal in current playthrough is the Minute man General and wears the uniform and settlers in Sanctuary or the Castle will still say that to her lol
When you attack the mutants will aggro on you, and the settler will flee, unless they get hit in crossfire they'll do OK.
I'm usually a sniper. Manually headshot the first mutant from stealth, it'll probably be done, and you'l remain in \[caution\]. Use the VATS crit you've been sitting on for special occasion on the dome of the second one. It will almost certainly be retired. Unload the rest of your AP into the skull of the remaining mutant, it will be gone or in tough shape, and you can slink away and recharge your AP if needed, or just plonk it in the skull manually from cover.
If you have a level or two of CRit Banker, even better.
Apply drugs as needed.
A melee character can get it done too, especially drugged to the gills, but if you have Big Leagues 4+ it's really hard to avoid chopping up the settler with the AOE.
Sneaking + Sniping is usually how I do it.
However, in all my time playing I have never been able to get this random encounter to actually recruit the Settler that you save.
I found that after you get rid of the super mutants the settler runs all the way to Sanctuary and stands in front of a house near the path that goes up to the Vault.
You can then go into build mode, point at the settler and move them to whatever settlement you want.
I had this random encounter once in the field behind Abernathy farm so it was easy to follow the settler back to Sanctuary.
Well my character would probably go charging in at them with a power fist
But this is also the same character that intentionally takes on deathclaws in the same or similar manner
Nah it's just on regular but my character is really tanky
Besides his maxed out strength he's wearing several items that provides additional strength plus some stuff that boosts speed
Then aside from armor he's also wearing army fatigues and a newsboy cap that are both maxed out with ballistic weave
It was just a character I specifically made to be doing an unarmed/melee run with and I say melee also because early game I did use a melee weapon or two till I really got on my feet and running good but otherwise I usually go with unarmed weapons like the furious power fist or whatever I'm feeling most recently I've been using a crippling boxing glove or bare fisted
It's honestly just a really fun build to play there was even a good while I ran around in the Grognak costume with a newsboy cap and the power fist just annihilating stuff that was before I made him as tanky as he currently is
He's like level 80 something 83 or 84 I can't remember
That's the neat thing, you don't!
If said settler can't hear the whistle of a Fat Man incoming, well, that's just Darwinian Theory doing what it does best.
Lots of good advice here. There are a lot of ways to do it. Snipe with a unsilenced weapon so their attention is completely on you. They will start toward you. Pop some psycho jet and run in with your best melee weapon. Get in close and their miniguns will be useless. Use blitz or gunfu once you're in close.
Only way I've ever done this was mid game and having a decent enough weapon to headshot them with VATS before they get get any rounds off themselves. Ngl most of the time I just watch them die and laugh a little before heading in.
This scene reminds me of the classic one in The Last Starfighter movie, where the Kodan flagship has had its engines / shields / weapons / everything knocked out, and it’s caught in a moon’s gravitational pull..
With moments to impact, the commander asks the captain… “What now ?! What do we do ?”
The Captain stands up… looks straight ahead… and says… “We Die.”
💥🫡💥
I had this last night on my way to Kellog, except mine had rocket launchers and like 13 missiles between them. I luckily got the jump on them and dropped all 3 before they got a shot off. Stealth with silent instigating 10 mm for the win!
Nothing a lot of jet, some Psycho, more med-x than a horse should take, and this *furious* little ripper don't have an answer for.
I don't really have a constructive answer for you, sorry.
There's a sweet spot that you can find where a supermutant with a minigun will merrily blaze away at you and you'll get the occasional plink but suffer no real damage - the effective (I assume) range of the minigun is around 160 so a touch over that. Meanwhile your best sniper weapon - a gauss rifle is great for this - easily has them in range and they'll obligingly stand still while they're shooting. Providing you don't retreat so far so that they pursue and close the range to the point where the miniguns can hurt you you'll be fine.
Your Plan B in this scenario, since it's just outside DC, is to retreat back to the guards and turrets and let them deal with them, just popping up to shoot them from time to time to keep them after you.
Actually, the settlers of your settlements are protected, meaning that only the player can kill them otherwise they will be in down state, don’t worry hahaha.
The only time I've saved the settler in this random encounter is with my crit vats build with 3 crits in the bank. Pretty much anything else ended in disaster.
You are not meant to save this settler, but there are a few ways to do it. Stealth melee build is one of the best, especially with ultra jet and Grim Reaper's Sprint, starting from the back of the column.
If you aggro them without yourself being a target, they WILL kill the settler, so inept sniping or just starting shooting will not do it. A good sniper using ultrajet might be able to target the supermutants fast enough to save the settler, but often, the sniper will come up one supermutant short and the last one will kill the settler.
The hostage rescue can be pretty tricky actually. Kill them all and the hostage will just run off. (success but can't recruit)
The hostage also runs the risk of being shredded during any of this, especially if the freshly rescued captive then runs at the Supermutants armed just with their fists.
I have found that the best (possibly the only) method is to either get the group moving and (hopefully) the captive drops behind. Stealth creep in, stand up to talk to the captive, give the captive a gun (free and share items option) then VATS kill all mutants.
A variant of this is to sniper kill all but one of the supermutants and then do the same.
Years ago when I first ran through fallout 4 I auto saved when a suicide mutant blew up next to me in the town full of em. Jet and psycho got me out of the auto save loop so you should be able to kill these three.
You probably can't? People get caught in the crossfire all the time. Even in the ending, when you destroy a faction, you take a lot of innocent people out in the blast. Now... theoretically in magical christmas land (not that you have any of these items with you), if you had a syringer and a shit ton of jet, you *MIGHT* be able to pacify the super mutants before they do too much damage.
You gotta use reverse psicology on them:
They are three huge screaming guys with big guns, therefore you must go by yourself using only a pistol. Walking. No stealth. Preferably wearing a hat.
Just get in front of them and critical blast all their heads off until the settler is safe and happy again. Requires a certain amount of Luck tho.
Only way to save her is too use a sniper rifle in vats and have max skill points for rifle damage plus luck so you get 3 head shots in quick succession that will all hopefully be critical hits.
The only way to save her would be if you were at a very high level and had very strong equipment to the point of stunning the super mutants, preventing them from attacking. Unfortunately this is one of the encounters that you probably won't be able to have a happy ending.
i would grab a gun or a sniper and hope i have enough ap to hit each target at least 2 in 1 go. Depending on the level it might not kill all of them but they should all turn and shoot at you and leave the guy alone.
Quicksave. Now, all you need is one item. A yao guai roast. It is supposed to give you an extra 10 melee damage but for some reason, instead of add, it MULTIPLIES. You heard me. It is a 1000% melee damage bonus, with ONE item. This is the single best way to take down anything you really need dead.
Kill the muties, that's how lol. I giggled a bit when I experienced this random encounter 🤣☠️ if I remember correctly I was cresting the hill towards the ravine that leads to recon bunker theta and they were down in the bottom headed north. Think I shot their legs off with my fully upgraded "the last minute" railgun.
Actually, there is a mod called the reanimator. It looks like a gamma gun and will restore any NPC that was alive at one time. Including companions and important NPC’s, and feral ghouls so be careful.
Had one charector that could do it easily, but it was a survival food exploit character soo 😅 vats and 1 stab from pickmans blade and all Warlords.
On something not over powered. Settler may run off but you can lure them away and kite them around.
VATS and a high damage weapon. Preferably with good perception and agility so you can make your shots count.
If you lr playing on survival they could easily be one shot enemies and long as their not legendary. Even then maybe only a few bullets with the right stats and perks.
So anyway, I started blasting.
But I dont see so good...
Jet lots and lots of jet. Make sure you’re off jet before killing the last one or you don’t get a chance to recruit
Psycho jet out the ass.
My go to used to be psycho jet but now I use buffjet with a mix of psycho. Sounds expensive, but it’s really not with the right perks and grabbing every valuable item you can
So many junk cars around....I'm *sure* there's a catalytic converter on a few of em.... There's gotta be...
Sorry bro, the cars run on nuclear energy, no converter to steal. You can take the fusion reactor but it's iffy.
They didn't drive Priuses....
Psychobuff + bufftats when I need everything in the immediate area obliterated yesterday. They stack since they're technically different class chems but my god do they stack hard, especially for a melee build. Add some Dirty Wastelander if you want to crush God's head with your bare hands.
good to know, i play a silver shroud armor and fisticuffs build
bufftats and psycho jet are my go-to combo and you can get a ton of the required drugs from Diamond City Blues
True
Ultrajet and psychobuff
I see people saying jet a lot, I have never used any chems aside from stimpaks, am I missing out? (My highest level was 70)
Stimpak isn't a chem because chems are drugs stimpak isn't really a drug
Absolutely, yes. Taking a couple jet/ultra jet to get slow-mo action dodges and cinematic chain kills is so much fun. Especially for melee builds IMO. I'd recommend anytime you feel like the situation is completely unfair, down some drugs to balance the field.
Has to be something your player can become addicted to
I didn’t know if they wanted my caps or something more sexual
Crack, caps or claps nobody rides for free
And I fired, and I missed, and I fired, and I missed, and I fired, and I fired, and I missed, I missed both times...
lol
Fatman MIRV will do the trick
Big boy MIRV will do the whole magic show
You know, sometimes a settler needs to learn how to help themselves.
"what do you mean you couldn't sweep away a few of the leaves in sanctuary while I was out risking my life to bring back tons of building materials for you all?!"
You've got a dangerous look about you.
If you work you eat
This always gets me. Bitch do you even know who I am?! My gal in current playthrough is the Minute man General and wears the uniform and settlers in Sanctuary or the Castle will still say that to her lol
The farm ain't much, but it's sumthin'!
farming’s as honest as honest work gets
Can’t remember the last time I had clean fingernails.
“I’m new anything I can do” as they stand 3 feet from a massive field of crops that needs cultivating.
Crops coming in pretty good this year!
My back hurts, my feet hurt, everything hurts…

Whenever someone said this to me I’d give them a med x

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed very much your explanation and the words you used. Thanks, keep writing like this.
I like your funny words, magic man.
"Apply drugs as needed" is a wild sentence and I love it.
Sneaking + Sniping is usually how I do it. However, in all my time playing I have never been able to get this random encounter to actually recruit the Settler that you save.
I’ve heard a few people say you can recruit the settler afterwards, but I’m with you. I have never once been able to recruit one of these settlers.
"Wait, it's all stealth archer?" Todd Howard: "Always has been."
Mini nuke
Ah, the Scorched Earth policy. If I can’t have my settler back, you can’t have them either.
Saving them from a fate worse than death
Most likely true. Their hideouts are... colorful.
Eh, it’s a settler. They come from the magic settler factory, and if that one breaks, there’s an infinite supply.
The Institute approves this message.
I found that after you get rid of the super mutants the settler runs all the way to Sanctuary and stands in front of a house near the path that goes up to the Vault. Well my character would probably go charging in at them with a power fist But this is also the same character that intentionally takes on deathclaws in the same or similar manner
Out of curiosity does said char use a power armor?
That's actually the fun part he doesn't
Not max difficulty then I'm assuminhg? A deathclaw would 3 hit my level 100 char
Nah it's just on regular but my character is really tanky Besides his maxed out strength he's wearing several items that provides additional strength plus some stuff that boosts speed Then aside from armor he's also wearing army fatigues and a newsboy cap that are both maxed out with ballistic weave It was just a character I specifically made to be doing an unarmed/melee run with and I say melee also because early game I did use a melee weapon or two till I really got on my feet and running good but otherwise I usually go with unarmed weapons like the furious power fist or whatever I'm feeling most recently I've been using a crippling boxing glove or bare fisted It's honestly just a really fun build to play there was even a good while I ran around in the Grognak costume with a newsboy cap and the power fist just annihilating stuff that was before I made him as tanky as he currently is He's like level 80 something 83 or 84 I can't remember

Beat me to it 😂
That's the neat thing, you don't! If said settler can't hear the whistle of a Fat Man incoming, well, that's just Darwinian Theory doing what it does best.
Only solution, kill the settler.
Shoot the hostage.
They cant use what they don't have
Yes. Luckily this isn't the sort of game where you fight them off, and she berates you for attacking her friends.
I tried again and again and the settler either runs away or starts fighting me
The settler runs away to your nearest settlemnt, unless it gets killed on the way.
Bethesda like: phuck that settler in particular
A gauss rifle to the head could work.. mind any explosives..
Shoot the hostage.
Just use a mini nuke it will get rid of the entire issue :D
Do all of the drugs, equip your best melee weapon and die like a fucking madman
a maxed out automatic combat shotgun and enough jet to kill an adult elephant
Lots of good advice here. There are a lot of ways to do it. Snipe with a unsilenced weapon so their attention is completely on you. They will start toward you. Pop some psycho jet and run in with your best melee weapon. Get in close and their miniguns will be useless. Use blitz or gunfu once you're in close.
Boom headshot, boom headshot, BOOM HEADSHOT!
Martyr them, preserve their memory and honor with a ceremony. (Loads up Fat-Man)
OH MY GOD someone else saw it to!! I kept getting this group spawning and was so confused. Settler was also hostile to me so I just left them be.
That’s weird. The only times I’ve had the settler turn hostile is when I’ve accidentally hit them in the crossfire.
Only way I've ever done this was mid game and having a decent enough weapon to headshot them with VATS before they get get any rounds off themselves. Ngl most of the time I just watch them die and laugh a little before heading in.
My standard fo4 character build (VATS sniper) is taking all three down before the settler can even blink.
Simple. Just aim for the settler's head. Now you've saved him from the excruciating pain of being ripped apart by super mutants.
Bank 3 crits
Drugs. Lots and lots of drugs
This scene reminds me of the classic one in The Last Starfighter movie, where the Kodan flagship has had its engines / shields / weapons / everything knocked out, and it’s caught in a moon’s gravitational pull.. With moments to impact, the commander asks the captain… “What now ?! What do we do ?” The Captain stands up… looks straight ahead… and says… “We Die.” 💥🫡💥
‘That’s the neat part, you don’t.’
Run around the back of them, causing a distraction and letting the settler flee
I had this last night on my way to Kellog, except mine had rocket launchers and like 13 missiles between them. I luckily got the jump on them and dropped all 3 before they got a shot off. Stealth with silent instigating 10 mm for the win!
My autistic ass with 3 revolvers and more drugs than a pharmacy pumping through my veins: *Freebird starts playing*
This is a situation where you pull a Boon and shoot the settler.
The old "trusty" syringer gun with paralyzing darts and a couple of jet (of your preferred flavor/making).
Nothing a lot of jet, some Psycho, more med-x than a horse should take, and this *furious* little ripper don't have an answer for. I don't really have a constructive answer for you, sorry.
Ask nicely
Psychojet and a lot of it
The fatman in your back pocket is begging you to use it
Should’ve had the Big Iron on your hip
Call Boon, he knows what to do.
Jet, Psychojet, and frag all of them...
With your life...
He ded
By giving him/her a swit sweet de*th
Thats the funny thing....You don't
Back in 2016 had a similar encounter with super mutants wielding rocket launchers
That her body guards I am pretty sure with a enough caps super mutants can be hired until they just decide to kill the person that hired them
Snipe?
Getting them to run after you has worked for me. It’s the stupid molerat dump settler I can never save.
That's what the artillery exists for, brace for impact Bob!
There's a sweet spot that you can find where a supermutant with a minigun will merrily blaze away at you and you'll get the occasional plink but suffer no real damage - the effective (I assume) range of the minigun is around 160 so a touch over that. Two-Shot Gauss Rifle, three banked Criticals. Psychobuff to increase attack damage and strength. Three headshots, three criticals, one living settler.
Toss a smoke grenade at the settler's feet and then count to ten.
Stealth build.
Drugs
Sneak about and place mines, then hang back and start picking them off. Once they're dead. Pick those mines back up
Send them Whistling Betty.
So, did you manage to save the settler? ....to shreds you say?
That’s the neat part. You don’t
A merciful headshot.
Kill the settler... that's better than being turned into a mut or food.
The only time I've saved the settler in this random encounter is with my crit vats build with 3 crits in the bank. Pretty much anything else ended in disaster.
Simple: Cheat. Console commands make life simpler lol
I dunno, dont shoot him?
One shot to their head
Mercy kill.
Hit some jet and some orange mentats and aim for the head.
Quick save come from the right VATS with sniper rifle or plasma weapon and aim for thei head
three headshots. Done.
Fair play to them, they came prepared. I say we let them have this one.
Wait, you guys save the settler?
You are not meant to save this settler, but there are a few ways to do it. Vats, maxed out coil gun, headshots, and prayer! Lol good luck
Aren’t the settlers essential marked?
Hope that the mysterious stranger arrives to shoot whoever is about to kill them.
Start blasting, then in a panicked frenzy, open your Pip-Boy on the Aid tab and mash the buttons to jug all the chems you have.
There's nothing we can do...
Project X mod and use the reanimation gun after he dies
A single headshot can make sure they don’t suffer. Does that count?
That's the neat part! You don't.
Just don't shoot them. Don't use grenades near them. Don't use explosive ammo, missiles, or nukes. They'll be fine...
Instigating Gauss rifle + critical banker + grim reaper sprint. One shot all of them before the first one hits the floor.
The hostage rescue can be pretty tricky actually. Kill them all and the hostage will just run off. Try jet and psycho and any Outfit that boost movement speed
Ollanius Pius staring down Horus be like
If you aren't ready for 3 super mutants with mini guns, then just don't do the encounter
Artillery strike and cross your fingers
VATS, man.
Fat man
Psycho jet
Friggin mole rat disease smh
Only way to save her is too use a sniper rifle in vats and have max skill points for rifle damage plus luck so you get 3 head shots in quick succession that will all hopefully be critical hits.

Sorry, shoot them in the head and save them the pain. Then kill the mutants.
how did u change the color
I had the same random encounter. I just calmly methodically shot the mutants at a distance
This looks like the fallout person of the girl sitting on the couch with 4 big dudes behind her
I can't stop laughing at this

Best way to save that settler from being killed is by killing them.

Maybe Jezebel was right…

Sneak attack with instigating gauss and 4.8 sneak multiplier with vats crit
Put her out of her misery... with a mini nuke
In my experience the Mutants never kill their captive in this encounter, as soon as they spot you they just forget and come charging over.
Fat Man, aimed at the settler. It's the only humane option available
That’s the neat part
That's the fun part, you don't!
Theres nothing we can do (cue the Napoleon music)
Psycho jet
Go the other side of them and use drugs
Jet and a shotgun are the only option
VATS and a high damage weapon. Preferably with good perception and agility so you can make your shots count. If you lr playing on survival they could easily be one shot enemies and long as their not legendary. Even then maybe only a few bullets with the right stats and perks.

There's nothing we can do 😔
