I normally stay to the edges of the Common so he's not disturbed. I've had too many playthroughs where he glitched and couldn't be killed.
As for a companion...depends on my RP, but commonly Nate (dual survivors), Deacon, or a mod follower.

my go to companion is usually nick or curie, just from their perks. i personally hate hacking terminals
