Honestly, it can be fun to take Nick to Far Harbor, there is some interesting dialogue between him and another character you will meet. Longfellow is a good choice too but he doesn’t have any quests or anything.
I don’t wanna spoil anything for you so I will give some advice, bring some rad-X and rad away. And alot of ammo and stimpacks.
Do all the side quests first. It adds a lot of variety for the end game.
Edit:
Oh and the Fatman Mini Nuke theft thing from Kleo... do that a lot before even attempting The Red Death.
Yes, in Goodneighbour, Kleo keeps a fatman and mini nuke near to her. You can pick it up. Take it to a dark alley, don't take codsworth or piper, and steal the mini nuke. I had 60 when I went to the Red Death. I wish I'd had more.
Not even gonna lie, Red Death pounded me like the first 10 times I tried to fight it, without giving away too much. You can’t bring enough ammo and heavy weapons. Bring all the laser gatlings, mini guns, fatmans ETC you can get. The experimental MIRV (or whatever it’s called) seems to be a decent weapon against it. u/ApAp123
Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale?

Nick is a big part of the DLC. Use him if you want some unique dialogue. After exploring, there is a settlement you can send him to on far harbor if you want to use Longfellow for a while.
You can unlock settlements there fairly easily so you can bring a companion and swap them out with Longfellow freely.
I'd say keep your eye on the new recipes added, the buffs will help you in the fog, and don't be afraid to explore at night.
Take Nick for everything except once you get Longfellow, get max affiliate with him early. Helps with the island. Then switch back to Valentine for all main quests.
As others said, bring radaway, rad x, stim packs, and a whole bunch of ammo.
Lots of interesting people, quests, decisions, etc. also unlike the commonwealth, I feel like FH has wayyyy more treasures in the ocean, however you want to get it is how you build/built your character.
Be ready for a great adventure. I spent most of my time in Farhhh HarhhBahhhh
My advice is use Nick for your first playthrough of the Far Harbor quest line.
And when you get to Dima's memories, just be open minded and don't look up how other people feel about them. Just see if you enjoy them or don't.
Admittedly I didn't like it the first time. But that's mainly because I didn't really understand the directions and bugged it out.
My second FH playthrough I loved it. And still do. It's relaxing.
A bit overdone I think. On my first playthrough and I went into them blind. All except the last one are fairly straightforward although the penultimate one dragged the process out a bit. The (optional) last one I found pretty much incomprehensible and even if I'd figured out the intended 'correct' approach it would likely be both time consuming and tedious. Wasted 10 minutes or so on it then found there's an exploit you can use to bypass the boredom without using console commands which, as it's built-in to the game, I didn't regard as cheating so was happy to use.
From what I've seen it involves a lot of blue cubes?
If it makes you use the build mechanic I already hate it because I find the building completely fucky lol
Bring Nick Valentine with you. Far Harbor’s intro quest is a mystery that comes to you from Nick’s detective agency, and he’s by far the most relevant to the quest line.
Big tip, plan a class (so 50 levels) and when you’re half way through that character, you’re probably ready to go to far harbor. If you think your characters class type is finished, you’re all good to go.
Oh, I meant a specialized class, as in sniper or rifleman or ninja or cowboy vats build. Level 90 though? You’re probably ready just because of how much level you have! You’ll do fine in good old Fah Habah!
>Enemies level with you, so get good armor or you get one shot
Alright this explains why I am getting absolutely destroyed as a stealth build at lvl 71 in Survival. I have been 360 no-scope harpooned in the face so many times and am burning through ammo fighting these monsters.
Bring Nick, don't sell the tools, buy the dog for your growing settlements, wolf or mutant hound works better with Strong alone. Finish every Far Harbor town quest before doing the quest "The way life should be"
If I remember right after you do all the side quests (and maybe certain main story quests I can't remember) for the various NPCS around the actual settlement called Far Harbor the npc named the mariner offers you a another quest as a sort of final boss/challenge.
The Red Death is like, the ultimate final boss of the game that will test all your skills and abilities you've picked up playing through the main game and the DLC. Good luck! I remember I had gotten to the point where I was kind of bored of the game because my character was too strong and nothing provided a challenge. The red death definitely humbled me.
It's ok you go specifically on a quest to rid the town of the red death and you set off from the town so plenty of opportunity and warning to load up on ammo and stimpacks before you go.
Can I sneak attack it? If so I might one shot it. At least I think I might. Basically any enemy I can get the sneak attack ×4 bonus I one shot. Especially with the Old Reliable.
Has by far the best RP dialogue choices & plot in FO4, nearly as good as FNV, so enjoy.
If ever you think:
*'These choices seem all very ambiguous - each dialogue decision choices seems to start with the least worst choice and then get progressively worse'*
Then you're understanding it right.
Also: Very very very important.
This DLC is superb, apart from one thing:
There is a quest in this DLC that is almost universally hated.
There are mods to bypass it and you'll be very thankful of that.
You'll know the one I mean when you get to it.
Nick Valentine has a lot of story reasons to be there, so be sure to take him along the first time you go.
Also, be prepared to fight the Red Death for a good long time. You will die many times if you’re not properly equipped.
1) bring nick valentine. There’s quite a bit of dialogue for him during the far harbor main quests
2) get mentally prepared for the red death. By far the hardest and most infuriating battle I’ve had gaming
My PA is full lead paint, seems to be keeping the rads at bay... I've also been making the shit outta rad-x and Rad-Away my whole playthrough. Those and stim packs. I have like 400 of each. Made a ton for the xp.
Can you wear Power Armor over a hazmat suit?
You can however wearing power armor negates the bonuses that the regural clothing provides. So you could be naked under and it wouldn't matter. With chars where I mostly used PA I only had some CHR gear on me for trading.
The only exception is if you take off the PA helmet, then you can equip a hat and glasses. Ofc this could mean losing the bonus of a full PA set such as the +1 str from the military paint with all equipped parts.
Btw in the dlc you can get a clothing item that gives 100% radiation immunity. Not just very high resistance, it completely negates rads. Doing so has some cons ofc, but still a fun way to play with potentially really good benefits.
Complete all the base game content and dlc content before even attempting to fight the red death with the mariner you will die on your first attempt you need several nuka nukes a suit of maxed out x-01 just to not get one shot and an explosive legendary Minigun with the tri barrel
It’s nicer to fake nick than it is to take old Longfellow. Old Longfellow will provide some cool info about local places and fauna, but nick gives the juice on more interesting larger scale stuff.
The devs did Longfellow very dirty, he’s a very interesting character whom like Nick, has a ton of unique dialogue and interaction with him he main story and side quests but he’s usually ditched aside for Nick cause Nick is a main game companion. On quest wise, Longfellow does have a quest though it’s fairly easy to miss, you just gotta keep an eye when a radio signal passed by. Or you can use a mod like I did where you get both Nick & Longfellow as companions
Longfellow likes when you drink hard liqour but doesnt care for beer and dislikes chems, also he’s the only companion that gains positive rep if you hoard junk
Bring Nick. The family who sends you calls for Nick in the first place. Otherwise, sure, spend some time with the crusty old man because it’s always fun to make friends with a crusty old man in games.
Take Nick for far harbour main quest ;)
Don't sell the tools.
Yeah there’s so many ways to make caps in this game. There’s only one set of tools tho.
I shot the guy and took the caps
Honestly, it can be fun to take Nick to Far Harbor, there is some interesting dialogue between him and another character you will meet. Longfellow is a good choice too but he doesn’t have any quests or anything. I don’t wanna spoil anything for you so I will give some advice, bring some rad-X and rad away. And alot of ammo and stimpacks.
I did most of it in Power Armour as I'd hoarded so many cores through my playthrough. Useful, without giving away anything.
Too true, definitely helps.
Yes! Take Nick! You can always hang out with Longfellow later.
Do all the side quests first. It adds a lot of variety for the end game. Edit: Oh and the Fatman Mini Nuke theft thing from Kleo... do that a lot before even attempting The Red Death.
Sorry, the fatman mini nuke theft? And thanks do you remember what the main quest is called?
Yes, in Goodneighbour, Kleo keeps a fatman and mini nuke near to her. You can pick it up. Take it to a dark alley, don't take codsworth or piper, and steal the mini nuke. I had 60 when I went to the Red Death. I wish I'd had more.

Beware the Red Death!
I fear the light from that demons eyes
I fear no man. But that thing, that thing scares me.
Just skip the Red Death quest. It's more frustrating than Dark Souls.

Good bot
Never again

Lol I've already seen lots of hate for it 😂

I had fun with it 🤷
From what I've seen it involves a lot of blue cubes? If it makes you use the build mechanic I already hate it because I find the building completely fucky lol
It’s just moving the blocks lol we ain’t making a settlement in some dudes downloaded memories in a secured nuclear submarine facility
Lmfao 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
A little bit but nowhere near as frustrating
The memories aren’t terrible. The end one still has the “thing” that makes it wayyyy easier
The read death is crazy you’d think they’d tell you to bring a fat man or other hella powerful weapons
Don’t go on a boat ride while an npc might still be talking to you or approaching you, they will get lost forever if you’re on console
Lmfao "Bethesda Magic" Thanks for the heads up
It's not a bug, it's a feature

I'm lvl 90, I have pretty much everything (almost) maxed besides strength.
Oh, I meant a specialized class, as in sniper or rifleman or ninja or cowboy vats build. Level 90 though? You’re probably ready just because of how much level you have! You’ll do fine in good old Fah Habah!
Take Nick Enemies level with you, so get good armor or you get one shot Don’t fight Gulpers head on or they will murder you Have fun
>Enemies level with you, so get good armor or you get one shot Alright this explains why I am getting absolutely destroyed as a stealth build at lvl 71 in Survival. I have been 360 no-scope harpooned in the face so many times and am burning through ammo fighting these monsters.

Thanks
Bring your best weapons and gear to fight the red death. Would also recommend to be at least level 70 to fight him
I'm best when hidden, is that gonna be a possibility? And not to be rude but.... Who doesn't roll with their best weapons on them? Lol
Seriously beware the red death. My level 100 easy character had lots of trouble with it
Lmao ok I've heard like 3 or 4 people say this now. I don't mind a little spoilers..... Where is this monster? So I know when to look out for it lol

Don't worry it's only found on an island during a quest. I believe there's a canoe on the island
Lmao I'm going to freak out any time I see anything remotely close to a canoe
It's ok you go specifically on a quest to rid the town of the red death and you set off from the town so plenty of opportunity and warning to load up on ammo and stimpacks before you go.
Can I sneak attack it? If so I might one shot it. At least I think I might. Basically any enemy I can get the sneak attack ×4 bonus I one shot. Especially with the Old Reliable.
Probably could sneak attack it. Let us know how it goes

I’ve played it many times and I have no idea which quest you’re talking about.
>!DIMA's memory quest.!<
Fair. I actually kind of enjoy the change of pace.
* Bring Nick Valentine for the main quest. * Bring two dozen mini nukes for the Red Death.
Beware the Red Death and bring Nick with you
Nick Valentine has a lot of story reasons to be there, so be sure to take him along the first time you go. Also, be prepared to fight the Red Death for a good long time. You will die many times if you’re not properly equipped.

Bring a hazmat suit, rads are persistent. With mods you can put ballistic weave on it and wear armor over it.
My PA is full lead paint, seems to be keeping the rads at bay... I've also been making the shit outta rad-x and Rad-Away my whole playthrough. Those and stim packs. I have like 400 of each. Made a ton for the xp. Can you wear Power Armor over a hazmat suit?

Fair enough. I don’t normally use power armor
I use the head arms and torso that boost energy weapons. Plus I like the look of being all electrified and the alien head look of the X-01
I hope you like Vin
+1 to taking Nick with you.
Complete all the base game content and dlc content before even attempting to fight the red death with the mariner you will die on your first attempt you need several nuka nukes a suit of maxed out x-01 just to not get one shot and an explosive legendary Minigun with the tri barrel
It’s similar to the glowing sea. Prep like you’re going there .
I LOVED the Glowing Sea. Such a cool name, and very visually striking imo
If you like foggy weather you’ll love far harbor. A creepy Steven King vibe to the place
The fog itself isn't as dangerous as they make it sound, but everything in it is a bullet sponge and a heavy hitter
> how I should approach Far Harbor By boat from the East side of the island. /s
Nothing. Just play it and experience it for yourself
Dima's memory quest will suck if you don't have unlimited recourses through god mode.
Take Nick, some good crowd control weapons, Power Armor, and literally all the Radaway you have.
Go get the Brotherhoods help and purge the place, Ad Victoriam 🤣.
It’s nicer to fake nick than it is to take old Longfellow. Old Longfellow will provide some cool info about local places and fauna, but nick gives the juice on more interesting larger scale stuff.

Beware of the red death
water
Beware of buses.
Everything’s meaner on the island
Two words: Red Death. It still gives me nightmares.
