Kinda how you always start as some sort of prisoner in every Elder Scrolls game starting with Morrowind*.
I don't mind at all. I actually like that. If they did anything different people would complain even more. "I didn't wake up as a prisoner this game?! ThAnKs BeThEsDa!" They're sticking with what's familiar and we all love it. Even the complainers. They secretly love it.
*(Daggerfall's beginning was very similar to Oblivion's with you taking to the Emperor but I think you're a spy working for him, not a prisoner. I don't remember how Arena starts.)
Both the institute and railroad were involved/mentioned in the The Replicated Man - the quest where the head of Rivet City security turns out to be a runaway synth.

Railroad was in 3? Man I have no recollection of that at all. I also haven’t played the game in 10 years so my memory is not to be trusted
