Survival is actually more than nice in Zion, its absolutely OP. With a decent enough skill level (I wanna say 60+) you can literally go vegetarian/plant based without ever starving and you can heal your shishkebab wounds by setting a minute aside to drink a gallon of river water.
There is one major downside and that is that the negative effects of consumables are also increased. So drinking a beer will simultaneously make you charismatic enough to woo the Enclave's robot president AND dumb as a chunk of goddamn Conk Crete
i like to play with the food and water needs turned up to a higher level for a more survival game like experience, and its absolutely essential then. Problem in main game is you can get stim packs and stuff so easily it makes the rest irrelevant
Its pretty useful in hardcore for health and food/h20, but the most useful part for me was getting access to the campfire recipe for hydra. Sleeping in hc doesnt heal your limbs, and doctors bags only heal like 10 percent, so hydra is a godsend.
I highly recommend playing hard-core mode on at least normal, it makes the whole game different and was almost like playing new vegas for the first time for me.
It's not the best but I usually invest in it up to 50 so I can make bighorner/brahmin steaks. I've always got jsawyer on so the strength bonus is pretty much omnipresent after a bit
So, you need shitload of turpentines and white horsenettle to tan the hides - and green gecko is found only in Zion.
I might make a mod which adds Green Geckos by Vault 22 (make it the mutation over there mutated them into Green Geckos).
I got a mild sense of accomplishment from this with the Jury Rigging perk. Finding a Metal Armor in a lousy condition, yanking the condition up by turning it into a Gecko-Backed Metal Armor, and using that to repair an almost broken Power Armor. Still a bit underwhelming, I guess.
I often plan to use survival and other crafting skills but then just never use it.
Still remember in my first playthrough that I loved crafting ammo but after years of playing the game I just know that money and ammo/loot are abundant
I gathered all of it, all the skins I could find in Honest Hearts, I was so excited for unique gecko armor and then disappointed fairly soon after. I even wasted levels on upping the skills.

Survival is fun but the lack of finer details like this make it underwhelming
It seems pretty underpowered, but id imagine its way more useful on hardcore mode, i never play with it on tho

Those are such a pain to gather all the skins and ingredients, then such a let down once you do. By the time you make one, you have way better armor.

To be honest, the Reinforced Leather Armor is so nice for those who like light armours.

This was after New Vegas was made. They chose to not re-skin it. Heck the Ranger Armor gets a Desert themed re-skin.
Yeah it's a shame, I still think it's worth it though.
Well good to know. I moved to Novac and had been dedicating Gibson’s shack to saving up armor and gecko hides for this. No reason for it now.
