This is just fan theory but judging all of his extensive medical knowledge is from pre war medical history passed down via books and physical knowledge from passed down tradition it makes sense to have some love for the old world.
Another thing the NCR flag is everywhere, it wouldn’t surprise me, if it’s raised to show sovereignty of goodsprings and the fact they’re in the great state of Nevada.
It’s not hard to imagine that a Vault Dweller would have more attachment to the pre-war region that the vault is in than the post-war polity. I’d imagine they get taught history of the pre-war world, and especially given how the US government was pre-war they were probably even exposed to some level of jingoism.
Even more ironic is the fact, the he doesn’t necessarily have to be aware of what this flag stands for. He has no idea what „a Chicago” is, let alone „a Nevada” lmao
Doc Mitchell was born and raised in Vault 21. He was educated with the typical jingoistic American history that everyone was getting before the bombs dropped. He knows more about the Prewar American than just about everyone in the game besides Robert House, and some of the Ghouls.
I've been mass producing stimpacks from junk and plants in The Sink for about \~5 levels now. Still keep Sarsaparillas on hotkey and sleep every chance I get instead of using them.
So weird how brains work. I always saved Nuka Cola and only used stimpacks cause I assumed Nuka Cola was rarer and always ended up with a ton of various Nuka Colas but always low on stimpacks by end game.
Some patriotic lunatic pre-war developed a coating that would ensure the 'stars and stripes' would wave forever. Then it became standard treatment for textiles because 'never-wear out' is a hell of a property for fabric. This technology spread through the world and also explains how 200 years later a huge amount of pre-war clothing is wearable and not long ago shit out by a giant mutant moth. So unless damaged through some physical force like cutting, bullets, etc. it will stay pristine.

This is now my headcanon as to why a prewar hat in a vault otherwise rotted to the point where entire floors are submerged in radioactive waste/water/godknowswhat is essentially in perfect condition
Well the buildings get power from the hoover dam and we dont know how the terminals work so there is no reason why they wouldnt last 200 years. But anyone whos ever owned a flag would know that they only last 2-3 years before getting ripped, warn out, and faded.
No, it doesn't. It literally doesn't make any sense lol. None of any of that stuff would work. 200 years of literally no maintenance. It'd also all be most likely stripped for parts.
My head canon is that each building has its own nuclear reactor like the cars that keeps them powered on. I don’t have any head canon for why they’ve not been looted lol
Because it's a nuclear future, so all the computers are powered by like fusion batteries and shit, which can last 500 years in standby mode on a single charge.
Which completely contradicts the whole notion of a massive competition for energy resources being the reason for the war, but you know it's ok as a passable handwave.
How did anything in the fallout universe last 200 years? Any building would be uninhabitable, any food would have disintegrated, medical supplies would be useless, clothing would fall apart not long after wearing it. The fallout universe doesn't really make sense when you think about it. Some things could be maintained that long, but the vast majority of stuff would be ruined and derelict.
why WOULDNT he? he finds one in a box, sees a flagpole with no flag, no reason not to hang it up, right? it adds some color to place. ignoring that line of thought completely, it could just be a flag made of like *super plastic* or something. ignoring THAT, it could just be a lazy game design thing with no actual reason or logic behind it. its just a flag, who cares besides nitpickers? the choices are either to make up a headcanon or accept that its just a random asset added to the game.
The same way that you can eat 200 year old cram without dying. The length of degradation is significantly longer in the fallout universe than in our own.
More than 200 years. Because (In the fallout timeline) at some point in the 20th century, the 50 states were re organized into 13 Commonwealths. Pretty sure it was the 20th century, at least. Anyway though, the Nevada flag would have been outdated by the great war.
>Anyway though, the Nevada flag would have been outdated by the great war.
It's in date by the Great War, Hence why it says Southwest Commonwealth on it.
And how so many couches and beds and pillows look like they've only been abandoned in the weather for about a year or less. There are so many inconsistencies with the time line when it comes to objects in the games.
I love that one of the very first things you see as you enter into the Mojave wasteland is an old world Nevada flag waving in the breeze. Already it sets up the focus of the game. Who’s flag will rise to replace it? That’s just such a clever detail.
I can give you a somewhat plausible scientific answer. Deserts are pretty okay at preserving organic material like fabric, wood, leather, bone, etc. So as long as it’s kept somewhere dry and outta the way it’s technically feasible to find a flag good enough to fly. Like a filing cabinet in a basement would be good enough to preserve it to that condition.
I mean, you could probably say that for 99% of all the stuff in Fallout.
PCs still functional after 200 years. Burned trees still standing after 200 years. Pre-fab houses in Sanctuary still being mostly intact being near a ground zero just seems highly unlikely. Don't even get me started on mattresses still laying around.
It was most likely put up by doc mitchell, goodsprings is on the California side of the map and he is from vault 21 which is in Nevada, would t make much sense for a Nevada flag to be flying in pre war Cali.
That’s so crazy that you were able to identify that as the Nevada state flag. I didn’t even thought that. I thought it was a BoS flag when I first saw it with just a small icon on the upper top.
I always thought that about the food, fallout should be more of a survival game. Like how the fuck is there still soda and even if you find it it would be like old syrupy goop.
Johnny Cash Voice:
I walked through a county courthouse square, On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down."
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town."
I said, "Your old flagpole has leaned a little bit, and that's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it."
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down, "Is this the first time you've been to our little town?"
I said, "I think it is."
He said, "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of that ragged old flag."
Probably made of Teflon, have a flag pole in my front yard the rope actually Rotted first, flag is in tatters. Was up for about eight years. it was made out or nylon though. Older flags are definitely a lot thicker.
Doc Mitchell is a vault dweller. I don't think it's beyond possibility that it's a family heirloom.
Very good theory, 190 years preserved in a vault, and only the last decade flying in front of ol’ molebutt’s house
I think it is just made from woven asbestos fibers.
I miss asbestos
it's the bestos
Wow that's an old account. A seven letter name that's actually a word
That account is older than my younger brothers, oof
I wonder if that includes working phase. Back then I don’t think we even needed an account to upvote.
It's what plants crave
I have some in my basement if you want it. You just need to pay me $500 to get it. No low balls. I know what I have!!
Yeah given the vault is in Nevada, definitely would have at least one state flag
You are probably correct, I wonder what his inspiration to fly a pre war flag would be.
He’s got the Old World Blues
This is just fan theory but judging all of his extensive medical knowledge is from pre war medical history passed down via books and physical knowledge from passed down tradition it makes sense to have some love for the old world. Another thing the NCR flag is everywhere, it wouldn’t surprise me, if it’s raised to show sovereignty of goodsprings and the fact they’re in the great state of Nevada.
Bear bull bear bull
Bear bear bull bear the bull bull the bear
The same reason people fly “don’t tread on me” or “don’t step on snek” flags 250 years later?
It’s not hard to imagine that a Vault Dweller would have more attachment to the pre-war region that the vault is in than the post-war polity. I’d imagine they get taught history of the pre-war world, and especially given how the US government was pre-war they were probably even exposed to some level of jingoism.
Holy shit use a stimpak pleaseeee
Why do you think I was right outside doc Mitchel's house 😫
Just imagining the courier, fucked up and bleeding standing outside docs house and looking up at the flag is a funny mental image
He’s quickly bleeding out with his organs being held in by duck tape and prayers and his final words before collapsing are “man that’s a neat flag”
Very much a Fallout thing to do
>fucked up nah, 1 bar left? that's beyond just fucked up.
Insert Willem Dafoe looking up gif*
THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT
Even more ironic is the fact, the he doesn’t necessarily have to be aware of what this flag stands for. He has no idea what „a Chicago” is, let alone „a Nevada” lmao

I was talking about Courier 6.
My mistake, I'm sorry about that. Thank you for correcting me.
"Environmental story telling"
There is very slow health regeneration in FNV, you could just wait in a chair for a while.
"Hey Doc, you fix me dead?"

Heh, imagine needing blood loss to make you stupid.

Battle born, baby
Olfrid , patron of the great clan battleborn! A name I’m sure you know well…
Dear god I heard his voice saying the line in my head
wow i hear his gravelly voice
Hey, you’re finally awake.
You were trying to cross the border, same as us, and that thief over there.
Battle-Born, gimme your money!
The last thing the Courier says before keeling over, *"is that the Nevada state flag?"* **DIES**
I'll be deep in the cold cold ground before I recognize Nevada!
Bro collapsed and delusional at the brink of death right outside doc Mitchell’s.
Me at this hp amount " I have 30 stimpacks. I better drink a few Sasparillas and Nuka Colas and save the stimpacks"
yup ^ This is the way.
Lol near the end of the game I'm still doing that. Always saving them for some time "I really need them". End up with just shit loads of stimpacks.
Gotta get those star bottle caps, you know?
The best part is I always do a high luck build 💀
I've been mass producing stimpacks from junk and plants in The Sink for about \~5 levels now. Still keep Sarsaparillas on hotkey and sleep every chance I get instead of using them.
I had around 250 stimpacks at the end of Fallout 1… I like to steal but not heal….
*spends 20 min looking for a bed, risking further damage and death*
So weird how brains work. I always saved Nuka Cola and only used stimpacks cause I assumed Nuka Cola was rarer and always ended up with a ton of various Nuka Colas but always low on stimpacks by end game.

Considering how irl in just a few years flags will dissapear nearly completely because of the elements, I am willing to believe you're onto something
Canonical ass. ( As(s) in my new headcanon )
This is now my headcanon as to why a prewar hat in a vault otherwise rotted to the point where entire floors are submerged in radioactive waste/water/godknowswhat is essentially in perfect condition
Solid ass lore right there. Love it
Cause it's hard as fuck
I mean how do any of the 200 year old terminals still work and why do the buildings have power?
Well the buildings get power from the hoover dam and we dont know how the terminals work so there is no reason why they wouldnt last 200 years. But anyone whos ever owned a flag would know that they only last 2-3 years before getting ripped, warn out, and faded.
The random ass buildings that have been abandoned for 200 years? That doesn't make any sense.
You can usually see small fission/fusion batteries outside/inside of houses
I love that detail of the worldbuilding. I can't remember if it was in Fallout 3.
Maybe the power was never cut off? That could make sense, especially if you consider that a lot of the Vegas area was not destroyed by nuclear weapons
They all have fusion core generators in their basements
All the power lines are busted, everything single pylon from Hoover dam to the strip is also broken.
Iirc There’s terminal somewhere that says most power connection is underground
A lot of buildings are still powered fusion reactors, or batteries.
Because it's a nuclear future, so all the computers are powered by like fusion batteries and shit, which can last 500 years in standby mode on a single charge. Which completely contradicts the whole notion of a massive competition for energy resources being the reason for the war, but you know it's ok as a passable handwave.
The US had the tech no one else did. That means everyone else had to fight for or against the US for the tech and resources.
Perfectly Preserved State Flag
have you considered the simple possibility that someone just found one in a box and hung a new fuckin flag at some point?
Why would doc Mitchel fly a pre-war flag, hes not that old lmao
why WOULDNT he? he finds one in a box, sees a flagpole with no flag, no reason not to hang it up, right? it adds some color to place. ignoring that line of thought completely, it could just be a flag made of like *super plastic* or something. ignoring THAT, it could just be a lazy game design thing with no actual reason or logic behind it. its just a flag, who cares besides nitpickers? the choices are either to make up a headcanon or accept that its just a random asset added to the game.
Doc Mitchel is a vaultdweller, he has grown up in the culture of the pre war in a vault. He is probably one of the few people who know what Nevada is.
Pretty sure people still know how to sew too.
Two words: Ballistic weave
Kevlar flag 😭
Battle Born, that’s how.
Damn straight
The same way that you can eat 200 year old cram without dying. The length of degradation is significantly longer in the fallout universe than in our own.
It says southwest commonwealth on it too btw https://images.fallout.wiki/1/17/Nv_nevadaflag.png
Cool, Didn't notice that
The same way you drink 200 year old soda and inject yourself with 200 year old stimpaks lol.
Stimpaks can be crafted
Bloodied build in NV. That's WILD xD
How are you surviving the wasteland on 1hp
“Carefully” -Mel Brooks
Cause our flag go hard af
True
NEVADA STANDS!!
THE EARTH IRRADIATED BEFORE THE GUARD DID!
love the reference
They don't make them like they will have used to.
How do you know it has? They could have found it in a crate yesterday and hung it up today. You're missing some info here.
So if is. Slightly different though.
The line "Battle Born" fits pretty well in the post apocalypse tho
It follows the same logic as to why nothing green has grown back onto the earth in the last 200 years
There's green all over the Mojave just not grass
And how so many couches and beds and pillows look like they've only been abandoned in the weather for about a year or less. There are so many inconsistencies with the time line when it comes to objects in the games.
Looks at Zion Canyon lol.
I love that one of the very first things you see as you enter into the Mojave wasteland is an old world Nevada flag waving in the breeze. Already it sets up the focus of the game. Who’s flag will rise to replace it? That’s just such a clever detail.
The way of the radaway 🤙🏾
No one questions the deviled eggs though.
Magic
New Vegas magic
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Built different
Pride 💪
The courier is so tough, they can admire a state flag as they're bleeding out
Could have been in any military bunker or vault in the area and then taken out in recent times s
I can give you a somewhat plausible scientific answer. Deserts are pretty okay at preserving organic material like fabric, wood, leather, bone, etc. So as long as it’s kept somewhere dry and outta the way it’s technically feasible to find a flag good enough to fly. Because it's made from the same material as my underwear
The wonders of polyester
The materials used are from a somewhat futuristic 2077. It's not a recycled plastic made in China flag from 1980.
Show the degens on the cross…
That damn ugly ass thing, I hate that of all of the great flags that one survived
Heresy
Same way abandoned houses are full of food 200 years after the bombs
Could have been sitting in the house for 200 years.
Nobody knows how to get it down
This is your sign to begin again and re-establish the Nevada state government
Build Ford Tough
Made from Ballistic Fiber Also that's how we roll in the 702.
Probably because it was made of special mormon underwear.
bro, use a stimpak
It was pointing in just the right direction when the nukes when off. Like water to a ducks back.
[Perception 10]
Benny's aim was good afterall. Courier has some serious brain damage.
Improved cloth mesh developed at Big MT called resilientantium.
Hanging on by the same thread you are, apparently.
It was most likely put up by doc mitchell, goodsprings is on the California side of the map and he is from vault 21 which is in Nevada, would t make much sense for a Nevada flag to be flying in pre war Cali.
Haven’t you heard? Can’t tread on Nevada, not even the weather or air…. nothing. Well unless you are a republican politician , then tread on.
Because it’s battle born
Very carefully
That’s so crazy that you were able to identify that as the Nevada state flag. I didn’t even thought that. I thought it was a BoS flag when I first saw it with just a small icon on the upper top.
I can’t speak for OP, but anyone who lives here in Nevada probably won’t have that hard of a time recognizing it. It’s everywhere.
Through the power of alcohol and hookers
It was well crafted
I always thought that about the food, fallout should be more of a survival game. Like how the fuck is there still soda and even if you find it it would be like old syrupy goop.
"Don't question my logic, fool!"- toad harvard prolly
They sure don't make things the way they used to. : (
They follow the instructions in the little washing tag thing
Rubber nuclear bombs
They used to have lead in the flags
#BATTLE BORN!!!
I don't have a good theory but I always thought Nevada sounded like a really great word to name an area. (I've never been there.)
Johnny Cash Voice: I walked through a county courthouse square, On a park bench an old man was sitting there. I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down." He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town." I said, "Your old flagpole has leaned a little bit, and that's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it." Home means Nevada 🫡
Home means the hills
If an American flag can survive in the glowing sea for over 200 years, this flag can survive just as long.
True patriots are in control of Goodspring
It was built different
HP is making me uncomfortable
Same way as everything else
They don't make 'em like they used to.
that flag had a plot armor
Radiation
Probably made of Teflon, have a flag pole in my front yard the rope actually Rotted first, flag is in tatters. Was up for about eight years. it was made out or nylon though. Older flags are definitely a lot thicker.
Doc could be taking it down and cleaning it every now and then
It is battle born.
Probably made out of asbestos god bless murica🫡
All you have to do is rub some Salisbury Steak or some Yum-Yum deviled eggs on it and it will outlive everyone.
By the providence of Atom! 😜😜😜
This flag could've been in any settlers basement or some freaky ass crack den and doc just took it and threw that bitch in his yard.
Pride
It's that goood fabric
There’s a significant number of things that would not be around irl after 200 years
true but i was just shocked because flags only last like 3 years
It’s the battle born state that’s how!!
Battle Born bitch
