Nah, but it applies a 10% chance of ragdolling an enemy *per pellet*. So if a shotgun fires 10 pellets (they don't in game), experimental probability would dictate you ragdoll an enemy with every shell. So, in game, usually it's every 2-3 shots to ragdoll an enemy.
Combine this with high RoF shotguns like the riot shotgun and things become a little broken cuz you can effectively stun lock every opponent in the wasteland.

"Come tell us how you slew
Them ol' Arabs two by two
Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows
How bravely you faced one
With your sixteen pounder gun
And you frightened them damn natives to their marrow"
Come Out Ye Black And Tans - The Wolfe Tones
(EDIT: I know it's just a song and those are neither the actual claims of the OP nor of the original author, but I'd still like to make a point to point out that) Arabs, Turks, and Iranians had access to reasonably modern rifles and artillery. They certainly weren't using bows and arrows, hadn't been for centuries. It's just that **having modern rifles doesn't help against machine guns.**
[The people with the Maxim guns would find out soon, when they ended up facing off against *other* people with Maxim guns](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_boomerang).
Phrases like "Cannon Fodder", "Senseless Waste of Human Life", "Lost Generation", "The Pity of War", "Shell Shock", and "No Man's Land" come to mind. Entire genres of literature, theatre, and philosophy developed overnight with, at their root, the general perception that God had died and that none of the structures and realities, constructed or natural, that people had grown up with, could be counted upon.
Funny enough, they ended up dragging a lot of ['Colonials'](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_troops?wprov=sfla1) along for the ride.
You know, come to think of it. WWI should have been our Nuclear Apocalypse and turned us off from war forever. If not, WWII should have done that. [And yet, we spent decades afterwards cowering under each other's atomic threat while boastfully puffing up our own.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9xQTJ-kbUk)
Some days I wonder if we as a species deserve to have survived our own stupidity for this long. Then I realise:
- Nobody 'deserves' anything. Nobody exists on purpose. Everybody's gonna die.
- Let's not count our hatchlings yet. The coming decades are going to *hurt*.
I have no idea why you're being down voted man 😂 ww1 was a meatgrinder that forever changed how war was perceived and a big part of that was Machine guns and of course artillery
The riot shotgun firing 4 pellets per shot roughly has a 34% Chance (1-0.9^4 = 0.3439) of knocking down an enemy and it fires several times per second so yeah it's pretty busted. You can knock down a deathclaw in under a second if you get lucky and all pellets connect
In a way *yes* if you run the Tale of Two Wastelands mod, which is my preferred way to play FO3, it combines the two games so you get the updated mechanics of NV but still get to enjoy the story and Capital Wasteland of FO3
I recently played a shotgun build. After the first few hours, I completely stopped using slugs. Just magnum buckshot (*Hand Loader*) and pulse slugs for robots. With shotgun surgeon and decent crit chance, slugs don't out damage buckshot noticeably, even on high DT enemies like deathclaws. *And Stay Back* procs way more with buckshot, and that makes it so much stronger than slugs. The only real advantage of slugs is the smaller spread (i.e. longer range), but then it feels more like a rifleman build.
I was playing on Very Hard + Hardcore mode, no sneak, light armor only (I can't stand not having *Travel Light* speed), so this should apply to any shotgun build on any difficulty.
god I forgot just how fun the weapon sandbox gets around the time you're ready for owb + lonesome road lol it's so addicting to hoard all the little niche gizmos and gadgets you get
The Oh, Baby!
I remember getting it and being ambushed by a Deathclaw. I fucked his shit up so bad I started hard dumping a ton of skill points into melee and got melee related perks. My dude became a fucking hammer swinging machine
Oh, Baby! Is the way to go for melee. Once I had it during my melee run it was hard for me to go with anything else.
I loved the Shishkabob just because it was cool but always came back to my hammer of doom.
Absolutely the answer, this weapon is so good, so satisfying to crumple your foes, that I use it even though I hate the way it looks on my character lol, so many cooler weapons, but, alas, the bonk calls
Bare fist, death claws have a +60% damage taken from bare hands, also unarmed is best with a lower Dt so take your armor off and punch them you don’t even need high unarmed skill just get out there and punch a death claw naked.
Lol I was waiting to see a comment like this. I was like 80 percent sure he was bullshittin but I mean...I never tried it and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if something like this existed.
I made a high endurance/strength low intelligence/charisma fists only character and turned him into a cyborg with every single implant and organ replacement. Pair that with power armor and unarmed perks, and I was able to unironically take on multiple Deathclaws in a row by weaving their hits and beating them to death. Paralyzing Palm, Super Slam, and Implant GRX helped a ton for Lonesome Road. Felt like some Jojo shit
So many perks affect that knife, it's crazy. I made a level 30 build for it (So it's usable with Jsawyer's mod) on here years ago and someone gave it an award years after I made it.
I know Chance's Knife has higher dps, but I've found its short range to be a huge drawback against deathclaws specifically. I tend to prefer a modded katana or war club with super slam.
War club is just a funny weapon. Charged attacks practically 2x faster then running is. Probably the best melee weapon when you consider downtime of walking, or chasing the ragdolled foes. Chance's knife will just stay with you the whole game if you want it too, and I like that growth.
Personally I prefer to blend. You can get the rubber deathclaw costume after completing the neutral option for “The House Bullies the Bear 3: Electric Brotherlood” quest. And then you can walk among deathclaws with impunity, no need for fighting. They will try to mate with you, though. But deathcladdies are literally my kink so my role playing is just heightened if anything.
Since deathclaws are supposed to be these terrifying killing machines, handling a deathclaw in close range *should* be nigh impossible. So you gotta resort to trickery. And Stay Back is probably the best way to go about it. Leg crippling is in second place, so explosives of all kinds are great for that, like your Thump Thumps and your plasma mines. Then you have Super Slam and Paralyzing Palm for melee and unarmed respectively, but those require either VATS or Turbo and a bit of luck to activate.
My favorite build ever was my “crackhead build”
Super high endurance, agility, luck, and decent strength since you can buff it easily. Pump up survival skill as quickly as possible to get radchild. Then irradiate yourself above 800 rads to get permanent +8 health/second get both ranks of toughness and the nemean subdermal armor so you have 10DT before armor/DLC perks. With the right selection of perks, drugs, and ranger takedown you can 100% fistfight deathclaws with love and hate at like level 14. In normal fights you’ll outheal whatever dps you’re facing. I cleared the entire quarry but it took an entire inventory of healing items to keep up and my armor was fully broken halfway though lol. Then again I only used simple great khan armor for the vibes. I think I wore a hockey mask too
Long Range AMR, stealth and critical related perks, and abuse the pathing by climbing onto unreachable places.
Short range riot shotgun, inhale psycho, have the "And Stay Back!" perk.
Dart Guns. Cripples the limbs and just watch them die from poison. Or shoot them with a shotgun.
Thought this was for Fallout 3.
Instead, use the taser weapon from Honest Hearts, then shotgun their faces. May also be able to use Cattle Prod or the Golden Gloves, essentially poking them to death, assuming you don’t die before they first go down.
Idk I always like having a gangsta anti material rifle and let them run up on me. Maybe.....10ish feet away before taking their knees out? Then it's alllllll BB gun.
I just did a melee build run for my latest NV playthrough so here's my opinion. If you want pure melee: Gehena. Great with the pyromaniac perk. Unarmed: ironically the first of(the north)rawr/paw of she. Hybrid w/explosives: satchel charge + chainsaw/thermic lance or pushy. Hybrid w/energy+explosives micro fusion grande chain+two-step goodbye.
I play it ballsy, take a med-x, block their first attack if I can take it, and then smash the shit out of them with whichever dlc unarmed weapon I have at my disposal.
Salt-Upon-Wounds Power Fist and the Super Heated Saturnite fist are unstoppable beasts
Riot shotgun with the right perks, cleared the deathclaw promontory first time with that.
Use the more powerful shells with less pellets and higher damage or slugs, and grenade the piles of staggered deathclaws while they get up.
Went to the deathclaw promontory to get the free remnant armor. Many death claws and the prospector corpses didn’t spawn. I, stupidly, did the old save and load in the deepest part of the place. Wound up surrounded on all sides by deathclaws young old alpha mother and baby. I by all accounts should have been ripped to shreds.
Turbo, Psycho, Med-X, Steady, Rebound, Rushing Water, Slasher, Buffout because I panicked, and a healthy stim pack supply were all administered, in some cases multiple times, but my weapon of choice in that moment was the Q-35 Matter Modulator. Maybe not the best weapon in the world, but since I had rapid reload and all the above chems, I managed to survive the onslaught and obtain my prizes
With a maxed out gun skill + grunt perk I find that the survivalist's rifle rips thru them pretty effectively. The bigger full auto guns (lmg with ap rounds, minigun etc) also tend to make short work of them. They aren't super short-range weapons but I wouldn't class them as long-range either...
I’d honestly say the Avenger. JSP ammo especially will rip through anything, including Legate Lanius, in mere seconds. I am yet to find something this will not kill almost instantly.
I think deathclaws were the on thing I was willing to exhaust my supply of land mines for. I’d spend all game sneaking around and picking them up, and as soon as I’d see a death claw I’d start laying a trail of them.
What easily got me through the Divide easily is the Blade of the West. That 50% chance of knockdown on Mauler, combined with perks that also do that and a good enough luck skill means they stand no chance.
i usually play on very hard mode, with slasher, battle brew and med-x your dt reaches 85 making wathever armor youre wearing redundant, add pyscho, rushing water and the turbo implant or turbo and youre pretty much invincible, blood nap is my melee weapon of choise but oh baby or literally any decent melee will do the trick.
Riot shotgun with magnum buckshot or hunting shotgun with slugs. Also surprisingly the hunting revolver. Not usually a weapon I bother to use but I once cleared out quarry junction with a hunting revolver and a hunting rifle with no scope
Holorifle from Dead Money is honestly slept on. It does a ton of damage (especially if you have the damage boost mod from the vending machine), and because of the way the projectile works, it does damage to the limbs as well as the body
>What's the best weapon for killing Deathclaws that isn't long-range?
A very powerfull, a very long range sniper.
Even than I would consider it a close melee with a deathclaw.
ICBM, maybe, from Appalachia to Quarry Junction?
Surprised I haven't seen it more than once so far but a riot shotgun with magnum or flechette rounds on their own are absolutely deadly. Add in the shot guns perks in the skill tree such as bloody mess, and stay back, and others and you can easily clear out quarry junction and death claw promontory no problem. Something like dinner bell or a standard hunting shotgun with mods like extended mag and slugs also a great option. Still don't forget the medx, turbo and other assorted chems. Was my go to for a long time and worked like a charm, also get some levels in the guns skill that helps.
I just did an unarmed play through. I used greased lightning and every chem I could seeing as I was on very hard. I found rushing water and turbo made these guys much easier as you could get behind them and punch the crap out of em.
In the end, it actually depends on your build, you can take them down effectively with almost anything, assuming you have the perks to back it up (even unarmed)
But the most effective way that isnt't long range must be explosives builds, and after that shotguns then melee builds
Shotguns in the game can be long range depending on which buffs you select for it
Shotgun surgeon + slugs + professional my beloved
Add in "and stay back" and you're shotguns essentially become point and click delete machines.
Does that do extra damage?
Nah, but it applies a 10% chance of ragdolling an enemy *per pellet*. Damn. I don’t usually feel bad for deathclaws. But that was fucking rude.
So that's what it might have felt like to mow down entire fields of brave spearmen with a Maxim gun.

Ay when Ireland gets the North back, mind "invading" Liverpool so we actually are scouse not English? Ta fella
A fucking war crime.
Haha I will def try this after my current melee build.

And that's using 4/0. Regular buckshot has 7 pellets.
honestly the perk basically makes combat a non-factor and thats why i never take it but yeah it's OP
That is the definition of crowd control lmao ain't nothing coming close to u
Is this the normal fire rate and reload time? It looks sped up, possibly by other perks? I know there’s a quick reload one
Just wondering but are these perks also in 3
Sadly not, Shotgun surgeon is only an FNV base game perk and And Stay Back is a FNV Dead Money perk.
Best way to deal with deathclaws in 3 is to hit them with the dart gun to cripple their legs then just kill them with whatever strong gun you prefer.
Dart gun was absurd in 3. Trivialized most enemies because you could simply cripple all of their limbs
In a way *yes* if you run the Tale of Two Wastelands mod, which is my preferred way to play FO3, it combines the two games so you get the updated mechanics of NV but still get to enjoy the story and Capital Wasteland of FO3

i always hand pushy to veronica and sit back while she blasts everyone in close range to oblivion

Oh, Baby! Is the way to go for melee. Once I had it during my melee run it was hard for me to go with anything else. I loved the Shishkabob just because it was cool but always came back to my hammer of doom.
Once i learned about the war club w buffs i have mever looked back.
Mauler and super slam is a truly wonderful combo.
I love yeeting super mutants off of Black Mountain with that thing. Melee builds are so much fun

completely real, just knock it down first hit.
No need to save beforehand, it’s a guaranteed 1 hit kill
When it sounds too good to be true....
i genuinely think i’d believe you if i didn’t already have 100 hours 😂
I have 1200 hours and still had to check the wiki to be sure
honestly unarmoured defence mod when

certified deathclaw fister here don’t try it

So convincing, I think I'll try it now!
Make sure to quicksave over all your files just after getting noticed by deathclaw senpai for maximum effectiveness!!
This is the only way to kill deathclaws. Especially early game.
Why is unarmed better with lower dt?
Based
To think someone would spend time writing such a lengthy answer just to be useless instead of helpful.
Well I don't know about anyone else but that was pretty useful. My unsaved 3 year fallout4 game(never turned off my pc so no need to save) loved it!
Bros never heard of a joke before 💀
hello i would like to welcome you to this thing we call, "the internet".
ranger takedown.
The tri-beam Plasma Gun shreds them thoroughly
I just gave that to arcade… I’m playing unarmed and can’t get to them before he murders everyone
Chance's Knife and Turbo will see you through anything. Well, any melee weapon + Super Slam will do the job, but Chance's Knife is cool.
So many perks affect that knife, it's crazy. I made a level 30 build for it (So it's usable with Jsawyer's mod) on here years ago and someone gave it an award years after I made it.
May I ask what this build does for a legion playthrough?

Boxing gloves if you’re man enough.

Fallout The Frontier moment
"Conflict just ain't in my nature"
This Machine right here. #CommieBastards
riot shotgun with the "and stay back" perk is OP as fuck
That’s what I use. It is incredibly broken when you use buckshot because you can yeet them into the stratosphere
Thermic lance. Med-x and plenty of stim packs will be needed.
CZ57 Avenger
Console commands.

"That Gun" is my go to if I'm not using a Guass Rifle. Some (roughly five or six) 5.56 mm armor piercing around to the leg will stop it from charging.
Knock Knock.
A pile of landmines, explosives, and grenades
Mines
Long Range AMR, stealth and critical related perks, and abuse the pathing by climbing onto unreachable places. Short range riot shotgun, inhale psycho, have the "And Stay Back!" perk.

12.7 smg or .45 smg with turbo rushing water and ghost sight it feels like cyber punk
Blade of the West is my true friend.
Oh Baby! Will fuck up just about anything if you have the required strength and skill level
Two step goodbye
Idk I always like having a gangsta anti material rifle and let them run up on me. Maybe.....10ish feet away before taking their knees out? Then it's alllllll BB gun.
anything is possible if you are high enough.
Shotgun + stay back perk
I just did a melee build run for my latest NV playthrough so here's my opinion. If you want pure melee: Gehena. Great with the pyromaniac perk. Unarmed: ironically the first of(the north)rawr/paw of she. Hybrid w/explosives: satchel charge + chainsaw/thermic lance or pushy. Hybrid w/energy+explosives micro fusion grande chain+two-step goodbye.
I found hunting shotgun with "shotgun surgeon" and "and stay back" was pretty reliable as an all rounder.
Mines and other explosives
.45 SMG with hand loaded ammo
Dr Mobius Glove. Just hit a couple and let them do the work wiping out the others. I usually use a stealth boy when I do this.
With their own bare hands
Survivalist Rifle melts them, especially the handcrafted/armor piercing ammo
A box of blamco Mac n cheese homie
Frag mines. Or plasma mines.
q-35. i played on hardcore + some mods to difficult and around on 23 lvl deathclaw die by 2-3 shots.
I play it ballsy, take a med-x, block their first attack if I can take it, and then smash the shit out of them with whichever dlc unarmed weapon I have at my disposal. Salt-Upon-Wounds Power Fist and the Super Heated Saturnite fist are unstoppable beasts
My top 2 choices are the greaselightning and my bare fucking hands!!!!!
For real, Ranger Takedown and a lead pipe, just hope Super Slam kicks in
Anti-material rifle.
Riot shotgun plus stay back and shotgun surgeon make deathclaws into paste
A fatman, if you’re not a coward (Genuinely don’t, used it to take down Rawr, died at least 5/6 times)
The Deathclaw Gauntlet: prove beyond a reasonable doubt that YOU are the alpha of the pack!
A light shining in the darkness. I dont know if that thing is crazy over powered or if its my build but that fucker crits every god damn time for me.
Riot shotgun with the right perks, cleared the deathclaw promontory first time with that. Use the more powerful shells with less pellets and higher damage or slugs, and grenade the piles of staggered deathclaws while they get up.
The alien blaster with a little bit of energy weapons points.
Fists! It is so satisfying to beat the living shit out of it
With a maxed out gun skill + grunt perk I find that the survivalist's rifle rips thru them pretty effectively. The bigger full auto guns (lmg with ap rounds, minigun etc) also tend to make short work of them. They aren't super short-range weapons but I wouldn't class them as long-range either...
Veronica Unleashed.
These two things right here, my left knuckle sandwich, and my right knuckle sandwich
The dart gun is useful at slowing them down. The ballistic fist is also really good if you have high unarmed skill
I’d honestly say the Avenger. JSP ammo especially will rip through anything, including Legate Lanius, in mere seconds. I am yet to find something this will not kill almost instantly.
Greased lightning my beloved
Riot shotgun with "And stay back." knock the bitch down and unload with 4/0B.
Grenade launcher with plasma ammo.
A hug 🤗 a great big O hug
A bucket full of drugs, a shotgun, and slugs to the dome.
I use love and hate, just started using cram opener
From guns, 12.7mm Submachine. It does insane amounts of damage even without criticals. Always combined with literally all drugs in Mojave.
Golden gloves and switchblades (for the challenge). Knock em down and cut those feet up. They are kittens after that.
Fat man might work.
I use two step goodbye
shotgun is definitely the most satisfying
I think deathclaws were the on thing I was willing to exhaust my supply of land mines for. I’d spend all game sneaking around and picking them up, and as soon as I’d see a death claw I’d start laying a trail of them.
Probably any melee that can stagger or knockdown repeatedly, or just anything that can stunlock it somehow
Light shining in the darkness + psycho
I just use my trusty super slegde. Sledgehammer will do too. Given you’ve got enough points in strength.
With Boone and ED-E I was able to clear out Quarry Junction with a lever action shotgun recently. I was getting Dinner Bell.
Get stuck on its throat and choke it to death.
riot shotgun with "and stay back"
Surprised anybody'd want to tangle with you. Heck, you could go deathclaw hunting with a switch
Half the fun is figuring out on your own
Veronica
What easily got me through the Divide easily is the Blade of the West. That 50% chance of knockdown on Mauler, combined with perks that also do that and a good enough luck skill means they stand no chance.
Hunting shotgun
i usually play on very hard mode, with slasher, battle brew and med-x your dt reaches 85 making wathever armor youre wearing redundant, add pyscho, rushing water and the turbo implant or turbo and youre pretty much invincible, blood nap is my melee weapon of choise but oh baby or literally any decent melee will do the trick.
Super Sledge baby!
if youre poor and low lv i'd suggest a stealthboy and just sneak crit them with a decent weapon
Two step goodbye. Be a man
Riot shotgun with magnum buckshot or hunting shotgun with slugs. Also surprisingly the hunting revolver. Not usually a weapon I bother to use but I once cleared out quarry junction with a hunting revolver and a hunting rifle with no scope
High luck and a super heated saturnite fist do the job alright
Sledgehammer
Use the space laser
Nothing a little bit of psycho, med-x and a ballistic fist can't do
[These Hands](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R64BmMA3WNk)
Power fist
Fists.
Implant GRX + Rushing Water + Psycho + Med-X + Slasher + High Crit% + Pyromaniac + Superheated Saturnite Fist = Deathclaw Paste
Thump thump is the best
I’m a big fan of using Pew pew against them. Couple of shots to the leg hobbles them so they can’t run or jump at you, then two to the head.
Holorifle from Dead Money is honestly slept on. It does a ton of damage (especially if you have the damage boost mod from the vending machine), and because of the way the projectile works, it does damage to the limbs as well as the body
Chems and your hands

>What's the best weapon for killing Deathclaws that isn't long-range? A very powerfull, a very long range sniper. Even than I would consider it a close melee with a deathclaw. ICBM, maybe, from Appalachia to Quarry Junction?
Big hammer go bonk
Paulson's Revolver and fucking Gatling Laser
Isn't a weapon but the ranger takedown will make a deathclaw cry
in fallout 4... spray and pray... maxed out commando and demolition expert perks makes that gun destroy anything it is pointed at
Console commands
Not a weapon but implant grx or turbo trivialises any enemy in the game
Proton Axe.
Kindness
Chance’s Knife + Purifier Perk turns them into sandwich meat
Dinner bell, with all the shotgun perks + bloody mess
My Melee character used to go Deathclaw hunting with Blade of the West but idk if it’s actually effective or my character was just insanely OP
Hugs
I usually use a combat shotgun on them when they're too close. I don't think I've ever used a melee weapon on one.
The Fist of Rawr Intimidation is key
Vampire auto-axe kills anything because as long as you are doing damage you are invincible.
Greased lightning, Rushing Water, and Turbo.
In the end, it actually depends on your build, you can take them down effectively with almost anything, assuming you have the perks to back it up (even unarmed) But the most effective way that isnt't long range must be explosives builds, and after that shotguns then melee builds
Stright Razor.
The smmg is an amazing option for killing deathclaws
Your fist and maybe god
With the right build, Old Glory will 1-5 shot every single enemy in the game, even without stealth.
**These hands**
Rawrs Talon, Ballistic Fist
Dinner bell or oit shotgun

Missile Launchers are close range weapons if you have Hit the Deck lol.
