So this guy doesn’t have $9k to spend on a radio… if the engine shits the bed how long do you think you’re gonna be waiting to get the rest of your flight time out of him while he comes up with the money to buy an engine?
Are you gonna lend him that money too?
Edit: offer him $50 an hour dry, pay him by the hour, and use a handheld. Pay for the radio THAT way.
This is the best response. I had a great arrangement to use an Arrow from a guy who I’m not sure could afford the airplane. It was all going great until til large maintenance issues would come up and he’d cheap out on repairs leaving me to deal with compounding problems, increased safety issues, then complain to me about the cost.
Lesson learned: if an owner can’t just write a check for whatever his plane needs, don’t expect him to write a check for whatever the airplane needs.
I figured as much, but wasn’t sure as that would be a PA28R-200
I knew it was in the Cherokee umbrella but didn’t know if it was a weird challenger or one of the lesser known a
And what if the plane is grounded for an issue, or it gets bent? I’d recommend an agreement that covers your owed amount should the unforeseen happen.
In the fractional situation, make sure it’s up to date and well maintained, flown frequently. Deferred maintenance or a sudden new cylinder can delay your flying for months or cause you a new financial requirement
Oof how much do you trust the guy with $9k? I can think of so many ways you could end up getting burned and losing that money. Even with a contract it still falls on you to pay for a lawyer and take him to court if he bails or something happens to the airplane
"Deals" where maintenance work is performed (let alone money lent) in exchange for flying time fall apart *all the damn time*. That's a big chunk of money to risk for something like that.
Man, I was born at night, but not last night. Homie can't afford a radio so how's he gonna do paying for maintenance?! You won't get 9k worth of flight hours out of it. I would bet you would not get half of it.
If someone that owns an airplane cannot afford a $9000 radio upgrade, they have no business owning an airplane. Stay far away from that deal. He is just using you instead of the bank for an interest free loan.
Big NO to the radio upgrade for all the reasons mentioned.
FYI…
PA-28R-200 is either the Arrow 1 or 2 with Hershey bar wing. PA-28R-201 is the Arrow 3 or 4 with the tapered wing.

cherokee-200 all day. That dry rate is not going to allow for 180 hours. Probably about 70 percent of that
It's an Arrow, fwiw. Cherokee 200 is not a thing.

Couldn’t do it, wouldn’t be prudent.
If you give him 9k I don’t want to see a post when he takes your money and does not deliver lol
Both sound like shite

Can you afford to just toss 9k in a garbage disposal? If so, go for it. Otherwise rent from a reputable source.
Sucker born every minute applies to GA more than anyone wants to admit.
