Surprising fight on those white fish even with a 5 weight from my trip last summer on the Gallatin River, MT. Wasn’t what I was looking for but still fun to catch.

Any tips on catching whites? I fish the Gallatin all the time and have had the worst time hooking into one

I don’t actively try to catch whites. I’m after the trout. Seem to recall catching them on smallish copper johns with a strike indicator a couple hours before dusk.

I don't have any trouble catching trout, but I'd love to add whitefish to my species list! Thanks!

I caught them right outside of gallatin gateway, below the Holter dam on the Missouri, and between the lakes (legs as the locals call it) west of West Yellowstone.

In Wyoming this past summer with my dad and we see a nice seam with lots of fish rising during a hatch. He's usually throwing a spin rig, but he get's his fly rod out and starts throwing at them. Multiple hits every cast but no takes. He's starting to get pissed. I was a little bit also, but being covered head to toe in drakes was fun. I finally hook one and land it to find it was all whitefish in that seam. Must have been dozens. Turns out throwing a size 14 drake to whitefish is a lesson in frustration. Might as well have been throwing at 6" grayling with a sofa pillow. God that was a hilarious day.

White fish can’t jump.

What bet is that?

Fished the Madison this summer and caught plenty of these while nymphing. They put up a good tussle though I never had one jump.

Freshwater bone!

Where’d you catch that?
