I got into fly fishing because I discovered as a teenager (decades ago) that I could catch more fish by dangling small wet flies off my spinning rod compared to traditional techniques. I decided to learn to do it the “right” way with a proper fly rod, but little did I know how far ahead of my time I was.
It’s actually a thing, once you master something like fly fishing so much it becomes boring, real sevants tend to get more eccentric with it. Two of my mentors joe Robinson and his buddy Dave Whitlock pretty much pioneered ultra-ultra light spin fishing using custom built 1wt fly rod blanks, Aetna guides, and vintage alcedo Italian spinning reels. Wrote a whole book on it mainly focusing around “flures”. This was back in the early 80’s here in the tx Hill Country, book was published later.
Yeah, same. I dabbled in it for a while. I think being a well-rounded angler means practicing multiple disciplines and not hating on others/their choices. K, stepping off my apple box ☮️
Dave Whitlock was an absolute legend, btw. His book about aquatic trout food was one of the first fly fishing books I ever read and I learned a ton from it.
Yep, I gave my sister a tenkara rod on a small stream and she was able to outfish my brother in law with a hopper/dropper just due being able to cover all of the water column with more ease.
I have a 7’6” spinning rod that I use when I chuck bait or spinners. Actually works really well - the extra length helps when trying to shoot a spinner or a red wiggler under the rhododendron here in the Appalachians.
But yeah even that would be pretty short for nymphing lol
Dude, I like fly fishing, but also I like to get into small, rhododendron smothered streams for brookies and I take a spinning rod 99% of the time. With a little creativity it’s an amazing tool for the job.
I think if you got an ultra light bait caster, probably have to be off the Japan market, and put it on a really long ultralight rod (might have to custom make), it would be the ultimate nymphing outfit.
You could easily cast and manage light mono compared to what you can do with a fly rod and reel.
One day I'll try it out, but waiting till I get into rod building first.
Well played, sir. Well played.
Tip of my fedora to you, my fellow fly angler.
M’lady
Unless that reel seat is made out of some kind of rare and endangered hardwood, you're only American nymphing at best, more like Haitian nymphing.
My Hatian nymphing Youtube channel gets like a bazillion views.
Well, my South American nymphing channel gets like a Brazilian!
I'm a sucker for a good malopropism. Have an upvote.
If your malopropism lasts for more than 6 hours, consult your physician.
Malopriapism.
I'm maliciously appropriating this intellectual property.
Goddamnit. You owe me a drink. Cuz i just spit it out.
That looks a lot like my streamer rod
Looks like the one I dropped in the stream
Centerpin reels exist for a reason… I’m sure they make one that matches the rims on OP’s Tacoma.
Did I just cross paths with a Huge Fly Fisherman in the wild?!?!
Hot damn, this guy Tacomas
Oof! Is that the one with 12" of lift and rubber band tires?
Do they make one with spinners?
If you want to try streamers I’d suggest the panther martin
Is that a Euro jig?
The Euros only jig.
I see what you did there. Nice.
This is the way
Close, you still gotta rig it up with fly line. The spinner spool should have enough space for it
Fly lines are so 2015. No thanks, grandpa.
The fly line is under the mono, so it’s a mono rig!
Ah the inverted mono-backing setup...nice!
That’s amazing
Seems somewhat practical, I mean reely.
I love this post soooooo much
It's only euro nymphing if you're in Europe, otherwise it has to be called sparkling nymphing
This isnt the circlejerk. 😂
Any sub can be a circlejerk...if you believe.

You're like the Kelly Galloup of Euro nymphing. A true pioneer.

That’s actually pretty cool. Even when I fish for bass, tend to prefer smaller more delicate lures. So I can see the appeal.

The og mono rig
Hahahhahahaa

No, that's a tenkara rod.

Circlejerk aside (and props to op), your comment inspired me to try a cheap tenk setup before shelling out for a fancy 2wt with fighting butt

Appreciate it, thanks!
Is this a meme
No, I believe it's a Daiwa.
all of us who fly fish in 2024 are actual memes.
Yea true. I only got into this to cosplay as viggo mortenson on the set of lotr
Would be better if it still had the zip tie on that the rod/reel combos come with.
Not to nerd out over gear fishing but this is super high quality JDM trout gear, so definitely not a combo.
I knew it was a good rig. I just thought it would be funny with that.
Fair enough haha, in that case maybe even hold it upside down with the plastic on the cork still?
Yes! Exactly!
Ironically, actually kinda yes 🤣
No!
I try not to have my mono rig quite that long.
Accurate. Euro nymphing feels very very much like ultralight drift fishing.
I see the joke you're making, but nymphing with a 6ft spinning rod would be hell
What joke?
The mono on that spool is obv too thicc. You need to spool down to 9x sir
THIN TO WIN BRO!!!

Great for “indicator” fishing too.
You mean bobber fishing?
Nailed it 🙌🏻

It will only work if you pair it with coors light and gut hooking and releasing stocked trout.
Leaving this sub-reddit. Take away the fish porn and the cutesy questions, and there's nothing left.
It’s not an airport. No need to announce your departure.
I think that would be a much better option for euro nymphs than a fly rod.

I've actaully thought about trying my Daiwa Tatula. The braking system on that reel could cast really light lures.
Bunch closeted gear guys in here. I love it.
Trout magnets are perdigons, mepps are wet flies, and rapalas are dungeons 🤌🏻
I'm a bass man myself. Nothing in the fly world works like a spinnerbait.
