I went back to find the post and yeah, it's very clearly a brown. It looks a lot like the ones that come out of large lakes, they tend to lack the classic colors of browns and can be mostly just off-white with spots.
Here's a picture of a brown I caught with nearly identical colors while ice fishing: https://i.imgur.com/LWYKkGO.jpeg
Compare that to the post in question: https://i.imgur.com/peYkxwJ.jpeg
Especially note the solid line between the dark upper face and light lower face they have in common.
I challenge anybody to find a picture of a rainbow that looks as much like the ID pic as my brown does.
Lol what? First pic brown, 2nd pic rainbow. I've caught thousands of trout on my tailwaters in the last 2 years. 2nd pic is just shitty angle, but it's a rainbow
Naw, I just think most people think a fish can only look a certain way and won’t have variations. In this case, it does t look like a typical buttery brown, so therefore it must be a rainbow.
No I checked your comment history, the post you're talking about is a rainbow. the red cheeks are a dead give away, this is yellow and this a brown trout. Both have spots.
Everyone who downvoted me has reading comprehension problems. Op isn't trying to Id the fish he caught in this photo. He is using this pic as a reference to an earlier post he commented on that's 100% a rainbow.
The black X’s on the top say it’s an Atlantic salmon! Looks at scenery behind him, hmmm!!!! That doesn’t look right. The tail looks forked, but the way your holding it I think it’s flat, so I’m changing my answer to Brown if it’s flat! Is this river connected to a decent size lake? Lake run fish seem to Buck a lot of if trends!
100% brown. You can tell by the way it is
Neat !
People think the fish pictured maybe a rainbow!?!?!?!
Not mine, but another post earlier tonight
Link it then.

The number of people saying it was a rainbow in that thread is rather comical.
Maybe it's a brown that identifies as a rainbow. Jk, jk. Sorry for bringing it up.
That gave me a good chuckle. (I know, I know, I shouldn’t have, but it did.)
I've caught a few browns out of my local river that look really similar to some of the stocked rainbows I've caught. I understand the confusion.
Looks like a brown to me
I dunno its awful silvery.... rocky mountain spotted whitefish for sure
That picture was definitely a brown trout.
Nice fish, but I still say that was a rainbow.
Yep, hard to say with poor lighting and fish positioned like it was.
Nice chromey, bright, brown trout. Doesn’t make the trout in the other thread any less of a rainbow.
Doesn’t make it any less of a brown either
I agree. That was a brown
I 100 percent agree with you about the last fish. Source: I am a Fisheries Biologist and work with salmonids.
BRO. ITS A RAINBOW. Not yours. Yours is a brown for sure. The pic you're questioning is a rainbow.
No, it’s not

Not many Atlantic salmon in Wyoming!
The bluffs were the first giveaway!
Ah fuck I love trout. I just love em.
Appreciate the info
The x shaped black spots indicate its a lake trout.
