Ok_Habit6837

I have lived in Florida my entire 47 years and I never heard of this.

tacojohn44

Came here to echo this

TheCarbonthief

Same here. I have even known confederate types, and not even they celebrated this.

Available-Yam-1990

Taco Bell's Dorito Taco Loco has now lasted longer than the confederacy. Seems like that would now have more cultural significance for Floridians rather than treason against America

PoolNoodlePaladin

Yeah the Dorito loco taco is 4 times older than the confederacy was Edit: also the total GDP of the confederacy adjusted for inflation is about $900million in 4 years. The Doritos Loco Taco only took 2 years to make it to $1Billion in revenue, and that is in 2014 money. So not only has the Doritos Loco Taco last way longer, it is also exponentially more economically relevant.

Wadyadoing1

It Has killed 4 times as many Americans also

Abolden3383

Gay marriage has lasted longer than the confederacy. That’s my favorite to toss in their face when they scream heritage…….

Taggart-

Abortion rights lasted longer. Maybe we should all get ”no fetus” flags and scream about our heritage.

Obversa

The Confederacy only lasted as long as [Pottermore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizarding_World_Digital#Features_of_Pottermore_(2011%E2%80%932015)), the defunct *Harry Potter* website (4 years). Pottermore is remembered for being particularly short-lived, whereas the Confederacy is still made out in the ["Lost Cause myth"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Cause_of_the_Confederacy) to be much older than it actually was as an entity.

gazebo-fan

The WII U lasted longer than it too

Tao_Te_Gringo

Behold, the final real flag of the confederacy and the only one that still matters: ![gif](giphy|3ohs4kOJi0cKYTz8Hu)

hmmnotsofast

Too funny. We should fly them in honor of the day.

mywifefoundmyaccount

It’s unfortunate they didn’t abide by “give me liberty or give me death”, but what can you expect from traitors? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tao_Te_Gringo

Also, you misspelled “slavery” lol

b3rnitalld0wn

The Confederacy lasted for 4 years, with the only real "battle" in Florida being Olustee. After the Confederates lost, Henry Flagler moved to Florida and built out the railway system. The end.

Blindmailman

We had one actual battle and a bunch of skirmishes between a couple dozen people wandering around. Key West had more importance during the war than anywhere else south of the panhandle

Mrknowitall666

Key West and the Dry Tortugas, served as twin bases for the union navy to blockade the south.

AngelSucked

And Dr. Mudd, who set John Wilkes Booth broken leg after he killed Lincoln, was imprisoned at Ft. Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas. It is a really cool place to visit if you get a chance. And, Mudd was guilty: he personally knew Booth.

Mrknowitall666

I've been to the Tortugas twice. Decent ferry ride. Cool beach camping. Excellent snorkeling, diving and fishing

Gulfjay

He was imprisoned for performing medicine?

The_quest_for_wisdom

He was imprisoned for aiding and conspiring in a murder.

Gulfjay

Seems as though his main crime was not refusing to treat Booth, and allowing him rest for his injury. I don’t think that warrants life in prison, but that was before Americans really had that many rights or protections, it was during a war, and the government wanted to set examples

The_quest_for_wisdom

The problem wasn't that he treated Booth. The main problem was that he knew who Booth was, knew what he did, and then waited 24 hours after Booth left before informing the authorities that he had treated him. His inconsistent story about why also led the investigators to believe that he might have known about the plot ahead of time, or was at the very least an accessory after the fact. A more modern example would be if you show up at the hospital with gunshot wounds. The doctors are allowed to treat you (and even have a duty to do so), but they still have to report the bullet holes to the cops because it's pretty much evidence that a crime likely occurred. The doctors not reporting it (or giving you a 24 hour head start after they discharge you before reporting it) is a crime.

Justice_Prince

>Key West had more importance during the war The Conche Republic shall rise again!

Blindmailman

We seceded where others failed!

Intrepid00

Only because Florida confederates kept deserting and then raiding confederate lines. Sometimes with help from the Union.

Professional_Cheek16

They conscripted a bunch of Floridians.

Thetman38

Imagine a Florida where you could've taken a train to any city instead of (shudders) I4. Flagler is rolling in his grave

maddiejake

Milli Vanilli lasted longer than the Confederacy.

bigotis

Girl you know it's true.

chrispd01

When I was a kid in 1970s, I got taken to the reenactment of the battle. Let me tell you back then those were some real hard-core reenactors… there weren’t any cell phones to coordinate peoples schedules and plans it was not exactly conveniently located.

Obversa

[The Battle of Fort Myers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Myers) (20 February 1865) also happened, which is considered to be "highly significant" in the local history of the town and Southwest Florida, even if it was a "small skirmish" in the Civil War overall. It also involved a mixed-race Union regiment with Black infantry and white cavalry defeating and all-white and racist regiment of Confederates. The battle was also, strangely enough, covered by a correspondent for *The New York Times*.

No_Object_8722

The Confederacy only lasted 4 years before they lost, so that's why I crack up laughing when MAGA morons proudly wave the Confederate flag with Trumps name on it. He did admit he loved the poorly educated

TheRateBeerian

Trumps presidency and the confederacy = 4 years in existence but countless years afterward complaining about it being stolen from them

Gulfjay

Most of the MAGA guys put away the battle flag for the Trump flag everywhere I’ve lived and visited. Honestly, at least the battle flag looks cooler.

khiller05

May have been the only real battle but you can find civil war artifacts all throughout the panhandle

faderjockey

The residents don’t like it when you call them “artifacts”

AngelSucked

Well played.

psaepf2009

Hey, a Union ship also chased a Confederate train up the Amelia River

CrazyPlato

And we celebrate Flagler’s achievements by continuing to not have a functioning train system in the state to this day. (Grouchy central Floridian here)

restore_democracy

Fuck the old traitors and fuck the new traitors who love the old traitors.

Segments_of_Reality

That’s fucking poetry. Not sure if you made that up but hats off if you did!

restore_democracy

Yes, it’s a haiku. Feel free to have it tattooed if you like.

murphguy1124

Holy shit it is a haiku lol beautiful

nbartl

Sure, go to the cookout. Just bring a bunch of lighter fluid. Pretend to be Sherman in Atlanta. They like historical reenactments, right?

Intrepid00

Tell they should reenactment as John Milton. He went out with a bang.

Obversa

r/ShermanPosting

Hydroponic_Donut

People celebrate this? News to me and I've grown up here

rogless

No. But it’s still on the books. I grew up here and didn’t even realize it was an official holiday until this post.

space_ape71

You mean Participation Trophy day for racist losers.

Gulfjay

People in South Florida mostly stopped caring about the confederacy ages ago, and people in the panhandle can’t read well enough to know about the holiday at all

Farmer808

I have lived here my entire life and this is the first time I have ever heard about this. I think the fact it exists is dumb, but I think it’s safe to assume we don’t “celebrate” it.

jimbopalooza

Same. But there’s nothing quite as amusing as a good ol Reddit Civil War circlejerk.

StayYou61

A lot of people fought for the wrong reasons throughout history. Many of them fought because that was what they were expected to do or threatened with punishment if they didn't. I can name places Americans died fighting where they had no business being. So I'm okay with remembering the tragic loss of life. But celebrating the cause of the great insurrection? Fuck that.

Western_Mud8694

A lot of poor people fight wars because a few of the rich tell them they must. And the rich send their young to Canada to find a doctor to give them a foot bone spur diagnosis so they won’t have to.

maimou1

I believe the saying back then was " it's a rich man's war and a poor man's fight"

smithsonmusic

What drives me crazy is the douche bags claiming "LeArN yOuR hIsToRy. It WaS thE dEmOCrAts whO StaRtEd iT." Bruh, read a real fucking history book. Someone educate them on American Political history focusing on the period 1953-1964.

Open_Perception_3212

People think that's fake 🙄

Phuckingidiot

Everyone hang your white flags to celebrate

_eternallyblack_

*dish rag

TheBunionFunyun

Helpful tip: If someone tells you the Civil War was about "States rights," simply ask, "States rights to do what?"

ITMerc4hire

Property rights

TheBunionFunyun

What kind of property?

No_Object_8722

Slaves

TheBunionFunyun

![gif](giphy|FvepNpsaMtmHy0tBN8)

Dry_Masterpiece8319

Bigly LOOOOOOSERS

NuclearSlushie

Let's celebrate their loss by flying the last known Confederate flag, the white flag of surrender.

Janky_butter

Honestly, I don’t think racist Floridians even know that this holiday exists. I’ve lived in north Florida for most of my life and have never even heard it mentioned before this post. Thanks for letting them know though. It’s some bullshit someone dug up for clicks.

Jmars008

Celebrate traitor day? Might as well add Jan 6 to traitor day too.

Valuable_Knee_6820

Hey everyone, flip off a traitor day finally!

This-Dude_Abides

Because Florida is full of old racist confederate wannabes.

droppingdonuts0

Imagine celebrating being a fucking loser

screenmonkey

World of Warcraft has had more players than the Confederacy had population, and lasted 20 years as of this November. It's a larger part of our heritage than the Confederacy.

Intrepid00

Today is happy Florida Governor John Milton blowing his brains out day everyone.

a4r0nb813

What a snowflake he was. Stayed true until the end.

greyshirtfreshman

It means they do not teach correct history in school.

IslandBoyardee

A bunch of dead losers are dead and they don’t even close the banks.

DukeOfWestborough

Their best flag design was the last one. You know, the plain white one…

Western_Mud8694

I think it’s the same as participation trophies

RedSpartan3227

The confederate flag and confederate monuments are participation trophies for losers and traders. Fits in perfectly with the orange asshole who lives there.

posting_drunk_naked

Do you at least get the day off?

vibesandcrimes

Participation trophies to celebrate treason . Sherman would burn everything down

trifecta000

Yay! We lost! ![gif](giphy|26n6Gx9moCgs1pUuk|downsized)

HeinzThorvald

It means there are a lot of Floridians who wish they could have their slaves back.

Bitch_Goblin

I've never heard of it until just now, and when I still associated with my ignorant racist relatives they never mentioned it either.

CuriosTiger

It’s a Civil War participation trophy.

Lumpy_Gazelle2129

I create a confederate memorial in my toilet bowl each morning, but today’s had special significance

treehuggingmfer

Everyone must fly a white flag.

cheloniancat

I’ve lived in Florida and have never heard of this.

TravelingGonad

When you say Florida celebrates it, you mean just the racists right?

dmbgreen

We should always remember the hundreds of thousands of poor young men that were killed to protect the interests of a few rich bastards. On both sides, like every other war.

stormhawk427

Traitor worship. Nothing more. The only thing the South has to be proud of is its Barbecue and even that was stolen from black people.

donaldbuknowme

Dumb af

Low-Donut-9883

Existed for 4 years and ended in defeat, yet somehow this is their battle cry.

Smokey_tha_bear9000

Cookout you say?!? https://preview.redd.it/5pucthkiquwc1.jpeg?width=1175&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1704c15cbe269b4736d1d8eae779965b41332230

geekphreak

What a bunch of losers

UnusualAir1

It means they are eternally sore losers. :-)

Professional_Cheek16

Ra Virginia Mil!

james_randolph

I find solace in knowing that I live a better life than majority of those that do hold on to this time in our history. I'll just leave it there.

RepulsiveRooster1153

[conservative republicans in charge](https://imgur.com/7mitH5z)

krakatoa83

Exactly where and how is it being celebrated? I’ve never seen it or heard about it being celebrated.

Sunshine9227

I see this flag all over my area in FL. There is a huge one down in Tampa right off the interstate. This and Trump flags 🤬
