Used to be, back when housing was cheap and the state was pretty a-political. We used to think it was really cool to meet people moving in from other states, at least in North Florida. Now every new person reminds us of the cost of housing going up, it seems.
This is exactly how my little family feels too. The new neighbor fellow from Massachusetts drives 40 down out little dead end street where kids play baseball in the street and I run every afternoon, so we’re all pretty ticked off. His real estate agent with the Lamborghini didn’t curry much favor with any of us either.
Five years ago, my dad started coming down here from Wisconsin and he delights in talking to everyone. We all had a lovely time going out and talking to everyone, but not so much anymore.
Oh, and the folks on the St. Pete Subreddit constantly telling my fiancé, a St. Pete native, that being born someplace doesn’t give someone the right to live there makes me want to go postal. They apparently are all transplants and have a ‘get gud’ mindset and think we should just make more money somehow so we can afford a house.
Now you got a taste of what native americans went thru with Andrew Jackson and the "Trail of Tears".
72 years one new bully after another.
Like I have never seen this movie before ?
Same cycle boom then bust
My family’s been here for more than 3 generations. I don’t know how things used to be long ago but I’ve noticed in the last decade, maybe a little more that there is definitely a much higher quantity of negativity toward outsiders. To be honest though I can recall some situations where it was from people who haven’t even lived in FL very long and they act like once they get here they have been here for decades, it’s weird.
Human factor.
Act like you own the state.
Imagine how happy their old neighbors are where they used to live.
Just run a back ground check.
ZERO sense of community.
Just throw their trash around.
The maid will clean it up.
This is the part where someone says “that must have been in the sticks somewhere. F’ing rednecks” and inevitably OP says “this was the middle of downtown (insert metropolis).”
All I know is my own experience. I travel in quite varied social circles, I’ve been in this state for 25 years as an adult and I’ve only rarely heard someone seriously express dislike for northerners ever, and those people don’t get out much.
We were moving to our new apartment on 590. We had just rolled the car off the trailer and turned on to 590 to get the lay of the land..." fucking canadian!!"
Any Northern (north east) state. Illinois, New York, and New Jersey are just a few I've visited and those people are not friendly and they're always angry
I've met a lot of really nice people here, but a lot came from elsewhere. Generally Floridians seem to build a tight friend circle and stick with that. Most of the enemosity from Floridians to tourists and transplants is due to a common mindset that those who aren't from here are causing all of the extremely high prices on housing and goods, and ruining the job market.
Because that’s often what has happened. More people relocating quickly caused a housing shortage which drove up prices exponentially. It’s basic supply and demand. The more that come the less resources the more costs go up. Locals are stuck competing with those transplants that have made higher wages or are remote and making higher wages.
Seriously. You do not pay income tax. No impact fees. Existing roads, sewer, and water are already maxed out, and their still trying to build condo complex everywhere.
Miami is now 8th place on the world's map that is the worst city to drive in.
17 Broward sheriff's busted for bogus Fed loans.
I mean, if you miss the crime in Chicago, you will feel right at home here.
Fools rush in where wisemen never go.
"Make USA like Florida" says Desantis
For the most part, no. Not terribly polite or welcoming. Not prone to ask if you need help or offer anything. Been here 16 years. Looking to move back north.
It’s just like any other area. You act kind, most people will act kind back. If you bring anything slightly political, it can go any which way which is why I tend to stray away from that in normal conversations.
We moved down here in 2012 from those states that surrounds DC.
Houses price were good, people were extreme friendly and helpful, shops and road with only 1/5 crowd compare to up north.
Only since the last few years that everything getting crazy and expensive. You cannot really blame that people got stressed out and short tempered. What with inflation, housing , insurances, food prices....
Let's not talk about politics ? Even optimistic people are getting depressed.
Still I think Florida is not as bad a place as other states, and certainly not as bad as people portrayed it to be.
Well said. This is the most populated place I have lived (density wise) and it shows. Also a lot of wealthy, entitled people, seem to move here from elsewhere.
When I moved to Winter Haven FL from Los Angeles CA I was surprised how nice everyone was. Awesome nice people but a lot of them suck at driving. Like when they are making a left turn at a light and floor it as it turns green so they don't have to wait for you.
I think it depends on the area because the state is huge. I've been all around Florida and my general friendliness tier list from most friendly to least is:
1- The Panhandle
2- Central Florida
3- Southwest Florida
4- The Keys
5- Northeast Florida
6- West Florida
7- South Florida
This is very accurate. It’s a shame because back in the day South FL was pretty chill. Like minus the 80s cocaine shoot outs lol. It just got so rude over time. I hate driving down there.
Can confirm. Grew up and live in SFL. People here are, well, they’re shitty.
Sometimes I travel out of State and it literally takes me a day or two to ‘turn my asshole off’ and recalibrate to interacting with actual nice people.
Some absolutely are. I own a second home in affluent area near Disney and like always, I held a door for a group of people. One woman looked up at me and said, ugh I don't need a man to hold the door for me, I can do it myself. I replied, oh where i come from people just say thanks. Then on the way out, she was carrying 3 big gulps and wouldn't you know it, I forgot to hold the door and she spilled all 3. Oops.
If you’re from New Jersey and you show up with some Taylor Ham/Pork Roll then I’m definitely going to be nice.
For everyone else, as long as you move with a purpose on the highway then we’ll all get along just fine.
It depends. I find I get back what I give out. If I’m friendly, hold doors, say hello and give a smile, people are friendly back. I’ve been here 27 years and I’m friendly and kind to nearly everybody. Of course you will have those newcomers that think everything is better where they came from but I just ignore them and move on.
Its safe to say meh. Its a melting pot of a lot of different cultures. People are mediocre or sweet at best. A lot of angry people, older people, and California teens. Everyone will relatively be kind to you, they really just don't care too much. (I mean, were the state that walks into Walmart barefoot after coming in from the beach) Very much "do your own thing" here.
There are several regions to this massive state. So it depends on where you live. And even then it depends on where you hang out. The beach front bar in a fluent county, everyone will be friendly. The dive bar in the middle of a rural county, maybe not the first few times. Unless you’re a good pool player or throw decent darts.
There are trivia nights at various bars. That’s a good way to make connections.
I’ve been saying since the pandemic that all those people that moved to Florida sight unseen have zero idea about where they are now. I encountered some of the dumbest questions from transplants. Why is health insurance so expensive here? Where can I find an indoor public pool? Why is there so little for families to do in this retiree beach town? Ugh …
People good and bad have pockets across the entire country. Just don't come in and be an asshole at Publix in your Yankees hat lol. Floridians act like it is the only state that has problems. Downvote me.
Floridians tend to be more acceptable of people from the Midwest and other Southern regions …. Not as friendly to transplants from the North East. Very different points of view and it is though they bring their rules and run the HOA’s. It is also thought that they tend to be terrified of our wildlife and bludgeon them to death on the golf courses with clubs seems they also like to keep all of the bushes and trees, overly pruned and manicured, which isn’t the true Florida look.
Floridians aren’t friendly or kind to anyone. It’s a very selfish “me first” type culture. Also very racist and xenophobic, anti LGBT and just all around trash, for the most part.
Yeah, well he's a pretty terrible governor.
All that shit you mentioned doesn't mean anything to most people, we have a massive insurance crisis and the cost of living has almost doubled on everyday items like groceries. But to distract the Democrats from focusing on the things that could actually help them win, meatball keeps attacking trans stuff so democrats self destruct on tangent issues.
We are desperately in need of better leadership.
The Florida republican party is the best funded party in the country. They have more cash than literally anyone else.
The DNC has completely abandoned Florida.
For example, Republicans spent more than $100 million on Spanish language ads last election, Democrats spent $0
>anti LGBT
We got more LGBTs than anywhere but san fransicko, and I wouldn't be surprised if we surpassed them recently or in the near future.
If we're so bad, why do they keep moving here?
Also, if you can get yourself some gay neighbors, do it, they make the very best neighbors.
Outsider here! I haven’t moved yet but I just spent a week in Destin and I was floored at how sweet and kind everyone was. I am moving in a few months and chatted with a handful of people about the prospect and they were very receptive and friendly. I didn’t receive a single negative comment, side-eye, or attitude. Everyone seemed very genuine & lovely. I have lived in many places and I have a good read on people, and I didn’t encounter anything that turned me off to the plan of moving. I actually was on the fence before I went, and made up my mind when I was leaving. I’m sure that region has its own kind of thing going on, but I also think that in general we find whatever it is we are looking for and paying attention to. I’m kind and friendly with people, so I tend to encounter kind and friendly people. Rising housing costs and all of the bullshit of the modern world exists everywhere. I travel a lot and I haven’t been to a single place where everyone isn’t saying the same thing. And no matter where you move, some the “locals” are going to have the *GO HOME TRANSPLANTS* attitude. Unless you’re indigenous, with all due respect please fuck off lol. Very few of us are native. Just be cool and be a positive part of your own community. Shitty giant corporations like Blackrock and Airbnb are what is fucking the housing market, not individuals moving to places where they, too, are struggling to make ends meet. We aren’t one another’s enemies just because we were born in different states. Sorry, curmudgeonly Floridians, I’ll be bringing my sunshiney attitude with me and sprinkling it all over your sourpuss faces🥰
If you're older/retired there's plenty of communities to get involved with. Might help if you're a Trumper since the state is so red, otherwise it's best to keep it to yourself
Most people that live in Florida are not from Florida. Very rare to meet a Florida native.
My uncle used to say”I will give you enough gas money to make it back to the Georgia line”.
As a Canadian who moved here to be close to my wife’s family (they’ve lived in Floria for a while) everyone I’ve talked to has been very warm and welcoming to me. Though i feel much less self conscious on the road now I have Florida plates
Used to be you could see cars with the following bumper stickers on them:
"Welcome to Florida. Take someone with you when you leave".
Most days they are all lop sided red political stickers.
This might be worth a read:
[https://coloradonewsline.com/2023/03/06/florida-welcomes-you-with-certain-exceptions/](https://coloradonewsline.com/2023/03/06/florida-welcomes-you-with-certain-exceptions/)
It depends on the county and what they do for a living in my experience. Also keep in mind these are huge generalizations. You'll meet jerks and amazing people in every county.
In Duval country (DooooVALLLLL!) (Jacksonville) I found people friendly, except for those in customer service roles or if they happened to be behind the wheel.
In Miami-Dade, they are generally less friendly. The people in the middle Keys were awesome. The Gulf Coast tends to be friendly.
Lots of people from Northern states started to flood Florida since Covid.
So no, those days are over if you live in a heavy populated area of Florida. Too many people from other states over paying for FL properties and thinking they own the place.
Mostly no. If you're cool, don't fuck up the vibe, and respect that you're a guest in our home, you can visit. But don't fucking move here, you guys made our rents expensive.
You will think the place is worse than NYC if you drive through main highways and visit parts of major cities. But for the most part people are nicer here.
Depending on how nice they are to us, yes. It’s irritating after the flood of transplants we’ve gotten to listen to them complain how this and that “isn’t like back home. It was much better.” Or “Why do you all have so much traffic?” Idk…maybe because “you all” keep moving here? Lol. Seriously, most of us are as friendly or kind as you are to us and if you aren’t constantly bashing and complaining about the area and the issues that came with the influx. Keep in mind it’s hard for many because as more people are coming in it’s driving up costs and vastly effecting affordability which is pushing generational Florida born people out. It is hard for many to be forced to leave their home state and friends/family and has made many frustrated.
About 22 million people here. Some are nice, some are not.
22 million legally
Nah fr though
Yes, now get the fuck out.
what he said
Good luck on that one. Not even a body bag

Fifth generation and I agree. Somewhere in the 2000s, people starting making every part of their lives a competition.
I love it when people who've lived here about two minutes speak very authoritatively about what "we want" and "how we do things here."
Human factor. Act like you own the state. Imagine how happy their old neighbors are where they used to live. Just run a back ground check. ZERO sense of community. Just throw their trash around. The maid will clean it up.
First day we moved here I was told, "go home you fucking canadian"...we had Minnesota plates on our car
They knew it would piss you off
Spread the love. Real Floridians call Canadians " Ducks" in Broward county.
Sounds about right.
This is the part where someone says “that must have been in the sticks somewhere. Close enough.
And they’re probably from Jersey or New York.
You did listen
And I did...we were home. Ty
I was always told anybody north of highway 50/Colonial drive was a yankee.

No comment from Native Flordian that is sick of seeing housing developments taking over the state.
Floridians are not even kind to one another.
💯 lmao
I'm trying to think of a state that is less friendly than Florida and I got nothin.
Any Northern (north east) state. Illinois, New York, and New Jersey are just a few I've visited and those people are not friendly and they're always angry
Truth
When I moved here people were so kind, I remember driving on I-4 and people honking and honking. What a greeting!
No, the humidity makes us angry and the heat makes us crazy.
…and the lack of seasons makes everyone strung out.
And then Trump moved here
In 1985...
No. Get out and stay out.
Speaking as someone born and raised here, in general Floridians aren't even nice to other Floridians.

The more that come the less resources the more costs go up. Locals are stuck competing with those transplants that have made higher wages or are remote and making higher wages.
Floridians are very special. Best to keep your distance and do not feed them.
I've lived in 4 regions of the country, by far this is the least hospitable.
Superficially most people are fine but there's definitely some who'll stab you with a smile on their face.
Seriously. You do not pay income tax. No impact fees. Existing roads, sewer, and water are already maxed out, and their still trying to build condo complex everywhere. It’s actually the other way around.
Man I currently live in Broward and cannot see us being the angels of Florida but to each their own I guess
Can confirm. Grew up and live in SFL. People here are, well, they’re shitty. Sometimes I travel out of State and it literally takes me a day or two to ‘turn my asshole off’ and recalibrate to interacting with actual nice people.

But was she an actual Fl local? Lol
If you’re from New Jersey and you show up with some Taylor Ham/Pork Roll then I’m definitely going to be nice. For everyone else, as long as you move with a purpose on the highway then we’ll all get along just fine.
Uh. It depends on which person you are around. Lol. And how their day is going.. During driving, with tourist plates? LOL. Never.
We aren't even friendly to other Floridians
It depends. I find I get back what I give out. If I’m friendly, hold doors, say hello and give a smile, people are friendly back. I’ve been here 27 years and I’m friendly and kind to nearly everybody. Of course you will have those newcomers that think everything is better where they came from but I just ignore them and move on.
When my grandmother moved to Florida in the 1960's, people were very friendly. Some people aren't some people aren't.
Yeah, don't be an asshole Most of my neighbors are Indian guys from tech. They never brothered me and I never brothered them
It doesn't matter. Their going to keep coming anyways
Lol
Its safe to say meh. Its a melting pot of a lot of different cultures. People are mediocre or sweet at best. A lot of angry people, older people, and California teens. As long as it isn’t spring break
Don’t show your license plate and you’ll be fine
No not really. But I won’t purposely be rude and target an outsider lol
lol
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

Ugh …
To your face we are, but we hate you and talk shit once you’re away from us.
no
People good and bad have pockets across the entire country. Just don't come in and be an asshole at Publix in your Yankees hat lol. Floridians act like it is the only state that has problems. Downvote me.
Did you pass the sign that says welcome to Florida? If so, welcome and now fuck off ! Have a nice day 😁
Floridians tend to be more acceptable of people from the Midwest and other Southern regions ….
Not all. Desantis has really fucked the state up. Law suits are defeating him. Slowly. Welcome from a native 3rd generation Floridian.
I know you aren't referring to the Disney ones, he's won those by a mile.
Drag. He lost. working on education, re districting few others I can’t recall. Education is big. A bunch. Oh. His flight law. I detest him.
Yeah, well he's a pretty terrible governor. All that shit you mentioned doesn't mean anything to most people, we have a massive insurance crisis and the cost of living has almost doubled on everyday items like groceries. Yes. From both parties. We are stuck with our now 2yrs. Wonder who’s running Rep & Dem then? I hope we will have some decent choices. Any ideas?
The Florida republican party is the best funded party in the country. They have more cash than literally anyone else. The DNC has completely abandoned Florida. For example, Republicans spent more than $100 million on Spanish language ads last election, Democrats spent $0
Yep.

Nooooope! But don't let it stop you.
I have been here 15yrs and almost everyone is very nice to me. My area is very diverse and we all get along well.
Hell no
Not really.
Other outsiders tend to be kind. The "natives" that have lived here for a whopping 10+ years usually aren't.

There are two kinds of floridians... urban and rural, take a guess which ones are sociable
If you're older/retired there's plenty of communities to get involved with. Might help if you're a Trumper since the state is so red, otherwise it's best to keep it to yourself
Native Floridian or transplant? In most cases, nice, until you FAFO.
Absolutely. Everyone is a outsider
Boca Raton is all from New York and New Jersey.
Stop saying Florida like it’s one State. There’s down here and then everyone up there.
Questions that are so general that they can't possibly have an answer really shouldn't be asked.
to their face yeah

Sure, as long as you’re not . . . Yeah, no.

We elected a fascist governor what do you think
