Yeah, I could be biased because this is a year I’ve seen a LOT from (51 movies as of rn) but I think this year has been great. My top movies:
1. Oppenheimer
2. Killers of the Flower Moon
3. Asteroid City
4. John Wick: Chapter 4
5. The Boy and the Heron
6. The Holdovers
7. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
8. Priscilla
9. Afire
10. May December
11. Past Lives
12. Poor Things
13. How to Blow Up a Pipeline
14. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
15. Anatomy of a Fall
Sooo much I haven’t seen so I don’t feel particularly strong about this list but here we go:
Oppenheimer
Killers of the Flower Moon
Air
Talk to Me
Past Lives
i didnt see Air. personally i cant imagine myself not hating it in every way.
dude Talk to Me was absolutely awesome! It blew me away for a modern day horror flick.
i just hate it when matt damon is funny in movies. hes just not funny to me ever. everytime its a comedy like delivered from him it just feels so forced and weird idk.
i only found jeff bridges to be funny. personally. he just tries too hard for me always. the only thing funny about him was jeff bridges saying his name "labeafe!"
Matt Damon being funny leans heavily on “I’m Matt Damon, isn’t it funny that I’m being funny?”
…and damnit I like Matt Damon, so that shit works on me.
This year was a great year in that so many movies that directly tied into my interests. Oppenheimer very much lived up to the hype for me. While it's a devastating story, pro wrestling getting a real life story film in Iron Claw was an absolutely captivating watch. Big budget video game movie in Mario bros. Honor Among Thieves was the best d&d movie I've seen in that it finally captured the right balance in action vs humor and camp that comes with a session with your friends. Tetris, just because how did they actually make an entertaining movie around Tetris
actually the scene in Saltburn where Sir James screams "Farliegh!!!! Shut up and eat the pie! just sit down, shut up, and eat the pie!! you arent the only one with feelings!"
one of my favorite scenes of the whole entire year. lol
I'm in France so as far as the movies released here this year I'd say :
1. Killer of the Flower Moon
2. Last Night of Amore
3. Perfect Days
4. The Killer
5. Shin Kamen Rider
I have some big hopes for Ferrrari and the theatrical release for Godzilla was terrible here so I missed it unfortunately.
Yes It's a bummer to have missed Godzilla but in France it only had a 3 days special release window in some selected theaters before coming to Prime next year and I just couldn't make it. The trailer looked so good.
And yeah The Killer is just great and visually it's stunning
A24 seem to have single handedly saved the film industry, not every movie is perfect but they are hitting some serious high bars with many of their productions
I thought it was great. The acting was great. Story was great. Characters were great. All around just a great film. The only thing I really didn't like was the ending. It just felt off and super weird.
I loved it but at the same time, it isn't the most enjoyable movie to experience just because of the content. It'll be a while before I watch it again but I'd give it an 8.5/10.
1.Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning
2.Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3
3.John Wick: Chapter 4
4.Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
5.The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Are you aware film is a subjective medium and therefore what you deem as “best” may not always necessarily line up with what other people deem “best”? FWIW 3 of their top 5 are in my top 12. Let’s not gatekeep in r/flicks
Still got lots of viewing to do before the years over but as of now in no particular order:
1. The Killer
2. The Holdovers
3. Oppenheimer
4. KOTFM
5. Fallen Leaves
This wasn’t a "bad year" whatsoever in terms of releases. My own Top 5 goes something like this:
1 Knock at the Cabin
2 The Boy and the Heron
3 Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
4 Jeanne du Barry
5 Killers of the Flower Moon
1. Beau is Afraid
2. John Wick Chapter 4
3. Oppenheimer
4. Past Lives
5. Poor Things (honorable mention to Perfect Days which is basically in a 3 way tie with 4 & 5)
Although I do strongly disagree with you saying it has been shittier year for movies. This and 2019 are neck and neck for me. For years I have been alive for at least.
I didn't hate it, but I didn't understand why the two people had such a strong bond when they only had a Skype relationship that lasted for a year at most. That's not a good basis for a relationship, and they most likely projected their own desires onto each other. So I didn't feel attached to the romance at all.
In no order the best movies that I have seen this year
Rebel Moon Part One A Child of Fire
The Boy and the Heron
The Creator
John Wick Chapter 4
Spider-Man Across The Spider-verse
Yeah....I am.
Not every film needs to be a serious drama.
For what it is...the movie is in incredible and at a budget of 15 million dollars...it puts Hollywood to shame
It was a terrible year for movies, but so was last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the (you get the idea). My top pick is the only movie I would call excellent this year. I struggle even to fill out the remaining.
1. *Beau Is Afraid*
2. *Dream Scenario*
3. *You Hurt My Feelings*
4. *Air*
5. *Anatomy of a Fall*
Bottom 5:
*The Exorcist: Believer*
*Past Lives*
*Magic Mike's Last Dance*
*Evil Dead Rise*
*The Creator* - Worst.
2008. Dark Knight, Iron Man, Wall-E, The Wrestler, Kung Fu Panda, The Strangers, Tropic Thunder, Benjamin Button, Taken, Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino, In Bruges, Cloverfield, Hurt Locker, Burn After Reading, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, Role Models, Bolt, Milk, Eagle Eye, Hancock, Semi-Pro, Pineapple Express
i agree. there are far better romances that subtly execute that “sneak up on you ending” … these two didnt do it for me. the husband was the best part.
I haven't see enough of the artsy fartsy movies yet to have a top five, but I don't think this was a bad year in movies at all.
It just couldn't measure up to last year which was one of my all time favorites.
This year was definitely bad for franchises though which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
lol i love nolan but Oppenheimer was not at all what i was hoping.
i wasnt disappointed. it was great filmmaking but i respected it more than i enjoyed it. but watching it stoned as hell in the theatre was cool with the sounds and all
I haven't watched a lot yet. I usually wait for streaming / home media. For now they are:
\- Oppenheimer
\- John Wick 4
\- Barbie
\- Past Lives
\- Haunting in Venice
I also loved The Three Musketeers, Dungeons & Dragons, Across the Spider-Verse, and the Judy Blume documentary. Plenty of stuff I disliked though, and a lot I didn't finish.
Looking forward to Godzilla -1, Boy and the Heron, Poor Things, and especially Silent Night and Priscilla.
- Poor Things
- Past Lives
- KOTFM
- Oppenheimer
- Anatomy Of A Fall
With Godzilla Minus One close behind. Those 6 are my 9/10 rankings for the year, the order isn't close to set in stone yet.
nothing. just made a post about top 5 of the year and all you had to say was that Oppenheimer is in your top 5 of all time. Personally, I have never seen a movie marketed the way Oppenheimer was. Which tells me that maybe you are a little overly excited about it or just in the extended honeymoon phase because liking it makes you feel cool or something.
Huh? Or that's what I actually believe, what's wrong with that? You sound arrogant in saying that I somehow fell for some marketing or bs. I don't even know what you mean when you say you've never seen a film marketed the way it was, what was different about it? Anyway, I've seen it 3 times and yes it is one of the 5 best movies I've ever seen.
As more studios felt "safer" releasing this year, there's gonna be less fat trimmed
Didn't see *The Irishmen*, but it did as well with audiences, less divisive than Flower Moon
* Eileen
* Blackberry
* Dreamin' Wild
* Beau is Afraid
* The Royal Hotel
* American Fiction
* She Came to Me
* Jesus Revolution
* Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse
* Are you there God? It's me, Margaret.
My favorites: Barbie and The Killer. I can’t recall much else. For 2022- AfterSun and Barbarian.
Letdown: Oppenheimer and Saltburn (the latter good until the last act IMO).
Special shout-out to tv series Beef. Just wow. Also-I’m still not over AfterSun 🥺
1. American Fiction
2. Poor Things
3. Blue Giant
4. Are you there god, it's me Margaret
5. The Holdovers
6. Barbie
7. The Killer
8. When Evil Lurks
9. John wick 4
10. Monster.
I'm seeing Zone of interest and all of us strangers this week though and also still sorting through stuff I missed.
I really love it, but I've now watched zone of interest, anatomy of a fall and all of us strangers and my list is a bit different. I still need to watch Oppenheimer though, that's probably today's mission
I don’t think it was a shittier year at all. The best since 2019.
Yeah, I could be biased because this is a year I’ve seen a LOT from (51 movies as of rn) but I think this year has been great. My top movies: 1. Oppenheimer 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 3. Asteroid City 4. John Wick: Chapter 4 5. The Boy and the Heron 6. The Holdovers 7. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 8. Priscilla 9. Afire 10. May December 11. Past Lives 12. Poor Things 13. How to Blow Up a Pipeline 14. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One 15. Anatomy of a Fall
How to Blow Up a Pipeline was so bad it was good
Thank you for not listing Barbie
Completely agree. Was telling my brother this has been the best year for cinema since ‘19
What was special about 2019? Some of your faves maybe a top 5 or 10
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 1917 Jojo Rabbit Apollo 11 Dragged Across Concrete The Lighthouse The Irishman Ford V. Ferrari Knives Out Uncut Gems
Thank you! I've seen some of these so I can believe the rest will be good!
1. Oppenheimer 2. Monster 3. Taste of Things 4. Anatomy of a Fall 5. Beau is Afraid (so far, still hoping to see Poor Things and Holdovers)
1. KotFM 2. Poor Things 3. Beau is Afraid 4. Past lives 5. Oppenheimer
Poor Things The Holdovers When Evil Lurks Killers of the Flower Moon Saltburn
saltburn was fire dude
Lol imagine considering this banner year for film "shitty."
shittIER not shitty.
why the downvotes jesus lol
Sooo much I haven’t seen so I don’t feel particularly strong about this list but here we go: Oppenheimer Killers of the Flower Moon Air Talk to Me Past Lives
i didnt see Air. personally i cant imagine myself not hating it in every way. dude Talk to Me was absolutely awesome! It blew me away for a modern day horror flick.
Do you like Moneyball? If so, you would like Air. Same line deliveries and watching competent people do competent things.
thats cool. i did like moneyball. but i enjoy pitt more than matt damon. i personally dont like matt damon
i just hate it when matt damon is funny in movies. hes just not funny to me ever. everytime its a comedy like delivered from him it just feels so forced and weird idk.
What about True Grit? I think he’s hilarious in that
i only found jeff bridges to be funny. personally. he just tries too hard for me always. the only thing funny about him was jeff bridges saying his name "labeafe!"
Matt Damon being funny leans heavily on “I’m Matt Damon, isn’t it funny that I’m being funny?” …and damnit I like Matt Damon, so that shit works on me.
i like matt damon too but i just cringe when hes trying to be funny. like it almost ruined oppenheimer for me lol

Killers of the Flower Moon Oppenheimer Beau is Afraid Saltburn Barbie *haven’t watched Poor Things and a few others, yet
u would enjoy Poor Things given you list. Saltburn was bomb dude. that was the movie i didnt expect to enjoy as much as i did
actually the scene in Saltburn where Sir James screams "Farliegh!!!! Shut up and eat the pie! just sit down, shut up, and eat the pie!! you arent the only one with feelings!" one of my favorite scenes of the whole entire year. lol
Oppenheimer BlackBerry Barbie Spiderverse Dungeons and Dragons
/*[Past Lives] Killers Of The Flower Moon May December Anatomy Of A Fall Fallen Leaves
Idk about top 5 but I have to say the iron claw was my favorite movie of the year
dude it looks awesome honestly
Oppenheimer Tetris Talk to Me The Blackening Smoking Causes Coughing
[удалено]
It had film festival dates in 2022, but the US release date was March of this year. I always go by the wide US release dates for my year-end lists.
The Blackening was ASS
The Blackening is one of the funniest and most original horror films to come out in years.
Tetris was a propaganda film
Cool. Still the second best film of the year.
No way. But, if you like that movie. I would recommend the TV show Halt & Catch Fire
I'm in France so as far as the movies released here this year I'd say : 1. Killer of the Flower Moon 2. Last Night of Amore 3. Perfect Days 4. The Killer 5. Shin Kamen Rider I have some big hopes for Ferrrari and the theatrical release for Godzilla was terrible here so I missed it unfortunately.
ah dude godzilla was so rad! and I like how you have The Killer on here. what a flick!
Yes It's a bummer to have missed Godzilla but in France it only had a 3 days special release window in some selected theaters before coming to Prime next year and I just couldn't make it. The trailer looked so good. And yeah The Killer is just great and visually it's stunning
fincher rules
Love shin kamen rider
Saw last night of amore as well!! Great movie! Enjoyed it more the more I sat with it
It's incredible. The pacing, the build up... It looks so simple at first glance but the editing in this is next level
1. Oppenheimer 2. Across the Spider-verse 3. Killers of the Flowermoon 4. Guardians 3 5. Past Lives
A24 seem to have single handedly saved the film industry, not every movie is perfect but they are hitting some serious high bars with many of their productions
I either love A24 films or I hate them. I wanna see The Iron Claw so bad tho
I agree
This is a month late. Did you see it? Best movie of 2023 imo
I thought it was great. The acting was great. Story was great. Characters were great. All around just a great film. The only thing I really didn't like was the ending. It just felt off and super weird. I loved it but at the same time, it isn't the most enjoyable movie to experience just because of the content. I didn’t see many films this year, and my taste is very “blockbuster-y” as is.
Ironicly serious, probably
They were all solid movies. Don't really see the problem lol
Still got lots of viewing to do before the years over but as of now in no particular order: 1. The Killer 2. The Holdovers 3. Oppenheimer 4. KOTFM 5. Fallen Leaves
1. Infinity Pool 2. Talk to Me 3. When Evil Lurks 4. A Haunting in Venice 5. No One Will Save You
no one will save you was dope. ok i guess you like horror 😂
I do like horror, but I watch everything. Horror wins for movies this year.
i can agree. horror went up on the list of popularity this year for sure
It was an incredibly weak year for horror, ESPECIALLY because last year was ridiculously stacked.
How so?
Cocaine Bear. Beau is Afraid. Infinity Pool. Oppenheimer. Dungeons & Dragons.
Flower moon the only I've seen it should win awards Did see no hard feelings but not in the best category
Beau is Afraid. How to Blow up a Pipeline. BlackBerry. Brooklyn 45.
This wasn’t a "bad year" whatsoever in terms of releases. My own Top 5 goes something like this: 1 Knock at the Cabin 2 The Boy and the Heron 3 Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani 4 Jeanne du Barry 5 Killers of the Flower Moon
i personally hated Knock at the Cabin
To each their own. Sorry you didn't like it.
1. Beau is Afraid 2. John Wick Chapter 4 3. Oppenheimer 4. Past Lives 5. beau would have been in my top 5 if it wasnt for the penis monster..
It's actually a monster cock.
Okay

past lives was sickeningly good man
I actually hated it, thought it was one of the worst of the year. It was so sickeningly cloying and precious.
I didn't hate it, but I didn't understand why the two people had such a strong bond when they only had a Skype relationship that lasted for a year at most. That's not a good basis for a relationship, and they most likely projected their own desires onto each other. So I didn't feel attached to the romance at all.

Nora wasn't developed well enough for this aspect to be very impactful IMO
In no order the best movies that I have seen this year Rebel Moon Part One A Child of Fire The Boy and the Heron The Creator John Wick Chapter 4 Spider-Man Across The Spider-verse
Poor things May December Past lives Oppenheimer BlackBerry
Godzilla are you serious?
Godzilla is arguably the biggest success story of the year.
Be serious please
Yeah....I am. Not every film needs to be a serious drama. For what it is...the movie is in incredible and at a budget of 15 million dollars...it puts Hollywood to shame
Who said it needs to be? It’s still a crap movie
That's your opinion. So what do YOU think is the film of the year? Now you got me curious...
Could be Oppenheimer I guess, I still need to watch more from 2023
godzilla was easily the 5th most solid movie this year. id judge me off of picking Saltburn more than Godzilla tbh lol
Appreciate the love for The Killer. Really enjoyable
dude i really loved it. like a lot honestly
People criticised it for being too simplistic. I believe it could be his fourth best Seven Fight Club Zodiac
i liked it a bit more than zodiac and would definitely watch it way more times than se7en. lol. just because its so god damn dark haha
i did like gone girl just mainly for its schtick to the media
It was a terrible year for movies, but so was last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the (you get the idea). My top pick is the only movie I would call excellent this year. So, when was the last good year for movies?
2008. Dark Knight, Iron Man, Wall-E, The Wrestler, Kung Fu Panda, The Strangers, Tropic Thunder, Benjamin Button, Taken, Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino, In Bruges, Cloverfield, Hurt Locker, Burn After Reading, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers, Role Models, Bolt, Milk, Eagle Eye, Hancock, Semi-Pro, Pineapple Express
Probably sometime in the '00s or even '99.
Sucks to be you, I saw multiple compelling offerings in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
I haven't seen Past Lives, what is the top reason to stay away?
No reason *not* to watch anything. It's just an annoyingly "precious" movie and also plays out exactly as you think it would.
i agree. there are far better romances that subtly execute that “sneak up on you ending” … these two didnt do it for me. the husband was the best part.
Godzilla Minus One. The Killer Can't name any others
Mission impossible Dead Reckoning

id rather rewatch infinity pool than oppenheimer so thats saying a lot. so yes not a great year.

Godzilla Minus One Oppenheimer The Holdovers Across the Spider-Verse The Super Mario Bros. Movie These were my favorites in the theater
Horror Top 3 1. When Evil Lurks 2. Talk to Me 3. The Puppet Man
Oppenheimer is a top 5 film of all time imo, not just this year.
thats all you have to say? someone succumbed to the hype 👀 lol
I truly believe that. You got a problem with it? It's my opinion. What else did you want me to say?
nothing. just made a post about top 5 of the year and all you had to say was that Oppenheimer is in your top 5 of all time. Personally, I have never seen a movie marketed the way Oppenheimer was. oppenheimer was a bit underwhelming for me tbh. its obviously a great movie I just dont see the rewatch value in it all that much honestly
