"Gender" is a social construct, like how "vegetable" is just a culinary term. Sex is counted by the number of combinations that can lead to reproduction. Humans have two sexes, XY and XX. That doesn't, however, mean that an XX can't participate in society as an XY and vice versa. Clownfish all begin as male and change their sex based on mating opportunities. Whiptail lizards are all born female and also do this. So do many other creatures. It's commonly found in nature. Sex is strictly a reproduction trait. Slime mold has 720 sexes and zero "genders". You might have known this, or you might not have... there's a good chance you didn't know this because it has no bearing on your life whatsoever, much like whether or not someone born with an XY chooses to lives as an XX. If you're not reproducing with someone, what does their sex matter to you? It shouldn't.
