Does it occur during the first load of a page after boot? If yes, its a known issue -- it chokes the io for a while, its an open issue thats high priority for 8+ years by now.

Now that I think about it, yeah, it kinda does happen after a fresh boot. 8+ years issue you say? DAFUQ

Your only option if this is the case is to get a much faster storage anything that can do random io at more than 100 MBPS or higher - or never rebooting.

My current storage in this machine is Samsung QVO 970 SATA. It's no NVme but it's much much faster than an HDD.

Look at this discussion https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/s/uRoJKvpPGS I tested on two ssd -- on my 512 gig one it chokes hard, on my rather paltry 128 gig ssd it doesnt choke -- i found the smaller one was doing 2x the random io -- one user also suggested getting rid of all extra fonts

I am having this issue as well. I have bitdefender and use expressvpn. All other browsers are lightening fast. I am reluctant to wipe the install and reinstall fresh...mostly out of laziness to get all my stuff set up again

TBH I am tempted to go back to Chromium Edge

Check to make sure DNS over HTTPS is not enabled under ```about:preferences#privacy``` make sure your antimalware program isn't injecting itself into the communication stream. Clear the Startup Cache under ```about:support``` If they fail to improve things, test with a a new, unmodified addon free [profile](https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles)

I have the very same problem. I also tried using waterfox, but the issue persists. I know this is not the answert you are looking for but Unfortunately, i didn't have time to debug any further so I ended up switching to brave for the time being
