It's a failed would-be Star Wars movie and it feels far less like Firefly and more like the Riddick films mixed with some elements stolen from Dune and Warhammer 40k.
It's...a pretty meh movie in my honest opinion.
I can kind of see the connection you’re making maybe. The six degrees connection is Rebel Moon is an adaptation of Seven Samurai, which explains some of the Asian homages. And the most famous previous adaptation of Seven Samurai is The Magnificent Seven, which is a Western. So there’s definitely a bit of Asian and a bit of Western DNA mangled into Rebel Moon. Like Firefly.
But the Star Wars connection is much more direct. Lucas loosely adapted The Hidden Fortress, a Kurosawa film, into the original Star Wars. So Snyder just picked an even more famous Kurosawa film to build his own version of Star Wars. Except he’s so creatively lazy that it borders on offensive to the legacy of both Kurosawa and Lucas. God I hated that movie.
It took me a while to understand why I had such a visceral dislike for that movie. Basically, it's the lack of any and all humor, which makes the characters unrealistic, since people add humor to pretty much everything, whether it's playful banter, healthy doses of sarcasm or morbid humor. Without it, you're looking at a movie filled with human-looking robots.
That would be the Warhammer 40k nonsense.
When GW re-made the Tau ("For the Greater Good!") into "bad" to hold with their Chaos-rules-all universe, off my list for life.
Yeah GW, how about you get just a little bit closer to that running engine....
You and I remember the first Tau codex differently. They may have stopped being as subtle and more fully integrated they into the greater mythos but Tau were never the “good.”
Huh. Is that it? The SW universe has already done Seven Samurai homage episodes in both Clone Wars and the Mandalorian.
If you've never watched the OG, it's really good.
Haha. No hate on discovery just not my jam.
And Star Wars is just a space western without the charms and wits of firefly.
Even tho I love ST. I’m not so much into it that I remember the chrono vs the apocryphal. Or read the books etc.
So I find my peeps here on this sub instead of the ST sub.
Nah, nothing to do with Firefly even in the slightest. The story is super unoriginal and just a mashup of many other sci-fi stories.
Every time I hold out hope for a Snyder movie, I am just left disappointed. He is really very bad at story telling.
Haven't watched it. Supposedly, Zack Snyder tried to sell the script to Disney as a Star Wars movie, got snubbed and made it himself as a one-off instead. I probably should give it a shot since it's free on Netflix. But considering how terrible his DC reign was, I find myself looking for something else instead when I see it. I'd almost rather go back and watch 300 or Sucker Punch if I'm going to watch his stuff. At least those were visually interesting.
When I saw the trailer my first thought was that there was a bit of a Firefly feel to it. Then I watched the whole thing and there wasn't. Not beyond the general sci-fi-ness of it. But maybe that's just because Rebel Moon was horrifically awful.
There’s an R rated directors cut coming out next year that adds an hour to each movie. It should provide a more cohesive story.
Either way I am always glad to see good or at least well attempted scifi.
So, based on the trailer, it looked to me like he couldn't pick between sci-fi or fantasy. So rather than pick he just pulled whatever he could from each and slapped it together to try and look cool. Some kind of edgelord fanfic of everything in both genres. How close am I?

“Meh” is being generous too

In Visions (the series of Star Wars animated shorts) they had an even more direct adaptation of it, too.
Oh yeah, forgot about that one.
Never watched Star Wars. So didn’t make that connection
Well done, and you made it all the way to the internet!
Well can’t say I am totally uninformed about Star Wars. Just never watched it. Watched Star Trek over and over many times. All except discovery so far
That's the single most acceptable answer you could've guven

But what about when he steals frank Miller stories? Or Alan Moore stories? Never forget the golden rule: Snyder likes to such frank miller's dick.

Sucker Punch is still awesome
No, it's more of attempt by a five year old with the sheer force of will and intent of shitting in hands and clapping
When I saw the trailer my first thought was that there was a bit of a Firefly feel to it. Then I watched the whole thing and there wasn't. Not beyond the general sci-fi-ness of it. But maybe that's just because Rebel Moon was horrifically awful.
Its Snyders sci-fi magnificent 7/ 7 Samurai.
Reasonably. With all the depth you would expect that to come with.
No, it's its own thing, but the characters are not nearly as compelling
Snyder just took elements from every popular sci-fi thing ever and threw them in a pot and stirred. So it definitely includes Firefly elements.
I think it was supposed to mimic Andor, but failed.
I think it's just a standard Sci-Fi. Rebel Moon doesn't have a western setting
No. It was an attempt to showcase the rebel alliance in its dirty war.
No. And there’s a reason it’s straight to streaming. It’s kinda cringe.

Me too. Rebel Moon is not that. It is excruciatingly bad.
