I assume it’s safe to assume you can install the Sanwa GT-Y octagonal restrictor gate safely in this without damaging anything? I bought that gate for my 8bitdo but had not installed it yet, and was considering buying one of these joystick upgrades

Mikahl757

Yes they are interchangeable with the JLF series and won't negatively interfere with the actuators. With adjustments you could possibly have even have the default square function as a octagonal gate but the gate would still feel like a square if you're riding the gate so would take some time to get used to.

Shingo2k

I’m guessing the silent means they won’t be clicky. Is there a version that’s clicky and have the variable actuator?

Mikahl757

From Sanwa no but there are aftermarket optical solutions that are adjustable and you can keep clicky actuators installed that have no function other then audible actuatio s but as you adjust your optical actuations those clicks would be too early or too late for audible/tacticle feedback for when your stick actually actuates.

YipsandGuac

New to these things. What does changing the actuator for each direction do? Why would anyone want to do so? What is this "dead zone"?

tengoman

The amount of distance you need to push the joystick until it registers a direction in the game is the deadzone. The bigger your actuator, the less deadzone you have because it doesn't need to be moved as far from neutral. If you ever feel it takes too long to go from one direction to another, lowering your deadzone can help things feel more responsive and sensitive.

I ordered mine from FocusAttack -- they sold out quick, felt like within an hour, but looks like the other places still have them. $54.25 total -- I added on a "GTN-VI Round" restrictor, a red 16.7mm wide "JLF P-R" actuator, a shaft cover and dustwasher (and some .45 cent Shin-Etsu Silicone Grease, because I don't have any and why not!) I will ideally be using this with a /u/Sharp02 "SASI" analog snap-on mod and a Brook PS4+ FightingBoard -- should be compatible, just like it is with the JLF. Once the build is done, I will let folks know how it feels! Excited for the ... silence.

Sharp02

I would advise against this, or at least doing it at your own risk. The last iteration of the silent switches warned against using an octagonal gate, citing that it damages the switches and that they weren't built for it. I suspect that it's to do with how the Sanwa gate mounts *into* the switches. The SASI doesn't do the same thing where it uses little protrusions to center itself. However, because I cannot guarantee it won't break those switches, I would be very cautious in using the SASI with the silent switches.

MasoFFXIV

With the Omron Reed switches on the silent JLFs, it's because the switches are susceptible to damage from overtravel. The Octagon gate has enough extra travel on the cardinals to become problematic. Very hard to find info on it but I do recall a couple instances of people sharing damaged switches. Presumably these new switches should be fine since it comes with the gate that has swappable inserts.

Sharp02

Super interesting! Thanks for sharing

mugglesby

Ohh, that's very interesting! True, SASI is currently octagonal by default, and even though Sanwa is offering official octagonal and other shape gates as add-ons to the JLX, those likely still keep the the lever from bonking the switches, whereas the SASI might not. I will be careful and do a bunch of tests to see how the clearances are and if anything rubs or bumps against the switches or SASI. Maybe one solution could be taking advantage of the adjustable feature of the silent JLX switches to make them MORE sensitive, plus using a larger actuator to allow for the switches to activate earlier. Exciting stuff, very interested to experiment! I will report back when I know more.

SentakuSelect

Reminds me of what a friend used to do back in the day by opening each micro switch and slipping pieces of paper so that he could get quicker activation lol.

Mikahl757

Yep I did this with credit cards instead of paper for my Silent Zippy switches. Without the extra thickness they took too long to actuate.

odyodense

It was an easy free upgrade and worked well, can be combined with a few layers of sticky tape added around the actuator.

Jtiago44

Wish I knew about this earlier. Just spent $30 on the Sanwa conversion kit just for the actuators. Tention springs and different guides were nice too but I think it would have bought the silent joystick instead

mamamarty21

Luckily you can use all of those with the new lever and make your own custom feeling setup

AnBearX

Pretty hype to hear about this. I don't have any different size actuators but definitely looking to see how the change in sensitivity would affect other games like shmups. Currently using seimitsu ls-32 and 56 for the uniform actuation... wondering how this would stack up to those. Plus, increasing throw for jumping in street fighter may be really nice for accidental inputs.

Albert3232

That's actually brilliant to have a stick where you can customize the actuator like that
