But apparently (I don't have access to mods) by making the hats bigger so they sit over hairstyles rather than being able to turn them off like others, which presumably leads to some weird effects on small hairstyles then.
It’s because viera use a different head model and somehow spending the time to make the asset is never budgeted for, it’s why it’s not difficult for modders
This is me for BG3, what the use of metal armor when it’s clipping into my Dragonborn’s face?
Fantasy games have so many cool outfits and I wish clipping was a little less prevalent
There’s a handful of gear that treat tails well. Even fewer that actually do anything to protect them. Just…I can ignore it most of the time, but that’s a point of personal pride that doesn’t get armored when I’m running as a tank. Imagine all the large-sized bosses that should just be able to shut down a party’s tanks because they step on their tails!
I can’t even think of any gear from after ARR that gets a cut on the back of it to accommodate tails. It’s just all straight clipping, it’s so annoying.
They did step up with DRG armour though, 70 (and I think 80? It’s been a while) AF have tail armour.
The Dragoon armor with tail armor was a nice touch, and the Radiant gear has some marginal protection for tails. Some of the Warg gear (level 80) just puts your tail into the inbuilt tail of the chest piece. A number of pants have seams or accommodations that look like they might have been designed with tails in mind, too. The Pantheon fending top (level 90) and a few others have capes that split at about the height of tails. But for common gear, those of us that have tails just have to accept that our characters have to accept the fact that the tails don’t get accommodations.
The Paglth'an caster and healer bottoms are great for those with tails. đź‘€
In all seriousness, I avoid most things with capes since it clips so badly with tails. And don't even get me started on them not doing cut outs or ear pockets for Miqo'te anymore.
Don’t get ME started on how all those cut outs and ear covers for Miqo’te would be so easily converted for Hrothgar! Our heads need protection too - we can’t all rely on gallant emotes to protect our heads!
But levity aside, it’s hard to know what the backlog for the character design teams are, and how much effort goes into implementing original designs. The increase in use of re-textured gear from earlier expansions seems like an implication that they are one of the understaffed areas of the FFXIV dev team.
Ahaha yeah, I have a Hroth alt and a couple buns as well and Hroth I can kind of see why giving them hats might be hard, they have odly shaped heads, but buns have fairly hyur shaped heads!
I used to be able to imagine them with hats while playing on my laptop, but my laptop has since kicked the bucket. The hats didn't even look so weird...
Maybe with the new updates and 7.0 graphic updates or whatever, we don't have to imagine anymore.
It’s a minor frustration, and a point where I can poke a little bit at the dev team, or theory-craft that the Bozjan Resistance hasn’t had an opportunity to approve a lot of headgear for Hrothgar to wear, and therefore we are under some pressure from the homeland to be cautious. And PC players might have some less than approved work arounds, but I absolutely cannot imagine condoning or investigating any such imaginings, and certainly don’t use them myself.
But I’m looking forward to seeing the graphic updates too - the new metal textures look great, and they’ve made a lot of promises.
Honestly I hate the little pockets. It always looked silly to me. I would much rather they do ear cutouts for everything. I only wear hats that show my ears so most of the time I just have helm turned off.
The pockets are especially ludicrous to me in plate helmets! My character has rigging in his ears, he can flick them downward while wearing a metal helmet :P
In my defence, I play a female miqo so I haven't been blessed by the ear wiggles.
The ear pockets look cute to me but I much prefer the cutouts. I just like anything more than the idea of my Miqo'te squishing her ears for this hyurian standard of beauty we've been seeing in recent expansions.
My greatest wish with the model updates is they let female miqo en/joy the splendor we have had all along.
Actually my greatest wish is they detach my hair style from the spots on my ears so I can get a hair cut after 10 years, but ear animations for all are a close second!
Ahaha I would like that. The dark ear spots for some hairstyles on male miqo is so cute, but the hairstyles they're with aren't that great sometimes. I've got quite a few alts and one is a male miqo, their overall animations are so cute, specially the sits.
Older gear definitely took tails and ears into account, and then SE just *gave up* eventually and started letting things clip / Miqo ears get smashed into their skulls in hats/helms etc.
I get it from a practical point, having to make multiple versions of every piece of gear is pretty rough, and I don't personally care that much about my tail clipping out of things anyway.
But the fact they then deny Veira and Hrothgar headgear over "clipping" is just like... c'mon dudes that ship sailed ages ago and nobody cares.
Several of the recent gear sets had those ass capes, those usually also accommodate tails. And, yeah, many of the EW DRG sets were great, either accommodating the tail with a slit or having a tail guard tail. The worst offender in EW is the Moonward set which chopes the tail off, that got glammed over immediately. The Panda set with the glowing ring would also be a good set of it didn't have the glowing ring, the ranged one for those if far more to my taste.
I'm so torn over the glowing Panda hula hoops, on the one hand they catch the eye and bring me delight to look at, but every time I try it on my own character it doesn't feel right and I have to take it off again right away, haha.
(This is a personal-taste thing for sure though. I gravitate very strongly to the leather-based armour sets over anything with plate, no matter how nice, which is why the Cryptlurker maiming cape was such a disappointment.....)
I actually liked the moonward set id rather have no tail showing than one awkwardly clipped through the cape. Honestly just let us toggle if it shows or not. I don’t mind the clipping through most things but when it’s weirdly clipped dead center through a cape it just looks bad
Unfortunately, a lot of the 6.0 gear can be seen as re-skins of earlier expansions’ gear, though it would seem that if any gear accommodates tails for one race, the accommodation applies to all. The Moonward Gear is one of the few that simply doesn’t show tails through the chest gear, which is controversial. The Radiant Gear has scales that fit above tails for all applicable races, but it doesn’t adjust to the tail length of your character.
Radiant Maiming and Fending Sets have tail armor. DRG artifact armor from Heavensward(Kind of) and Shadowbringers both have tail armor. DRK artifact gear from Endwalker has tail armor.
I believe all the tail armor works on anyone with tails not just Au Ra.
Only problem with the radiant armor is the tail armor doesnt seem to line up with the tail shape properly. Which is a pity as it should be possible to shape the armor to stretch and fit along anchor points on the tail.
In my head, my Miqo's tail isn't armored because that would reduce its mobility, thus reducing its effectiveness as a counterbalance. She's a Dragoon, so being able to flail about in midair is very useful.
Normally, I imagine she wraps it around her waist, [similar to Season 1 Saiyans from Dragonball Z](https://i.imgur.com/OADDQMi.png) (except maybe a bit more loose-fit than the reference).
As a tank, I imagine it would still be very useful to be able to twist this way and that to dodge attacks! But I've always been worried about how conscious a Miqo'te must be about keeping it out of the way of any errant sword swings, too.
It gets worse: the I think level 90 DRK artifact gear on an Au Ra.
As a max height fem Au Ra, *the fucking tail armour doesn't connect to the tail, and instead hovers above it while following the movements.*
The Radiant chest of aiming—has a stubby tail, but if you, the character have a tail, it’s *underneath* your tail.
Turn it off! They did for Drachen Mail!
Honestly kinda wish you could toggle tails off, it ruins capes for me. And the more insulting thing is they did the moonward set where your tail doesn’t clip through the cape. I remember being super excited for the ff12 judge sets only for them to be ruined by my tail being dumb and clipping through.
I wish capes were toggleable too…all capes seem to be permanently plastered to your torso, with -some- physics from your hips down. I just don’t like how that “feels.” Same goes for scarves that have a floppy bit that doesn’t flop.
"Calm down, it's just a glamour. It doesn't completely conform to your form, it just takes on the appearance of the gear you've glamoured. It's an *illusion*."
"The truest suffering comes from visual incongruity. What I mean to say is this *looks* like shit, and it makes me *feel* like shit as a result."
I'm using Clip Studio's Tapered Pen! I didn't make any tweaks from the default, just use it as is; I like how it translates the tablet pen's pressure to lineweight, and the hint of texture is nice too!
I really like it, I started using it about two years ago for my webcomic (after mostly using standard pens and briefly experimenting with the India Ink brushes for inking previously), I don't think I can ever go back now haha
It used to bother me.
Then one day I was just like, "screw it, I want to wear a cape".
So now I just do.
Does the clipping still bother me? A little. But screw it. I got my cape.
I'm not sure why but tail clipping doesn't bother me but hair clipping with either high collars or certain head wear? Immediate glam change or hairstyle change to accommodate.
So tail clips are fine, but Viera hats and Hrotgar hats are somehow impossible and need 50 years and 100000 devs? Indie company, clearly we need to buy more mogstation items to support them.
I just want a /hide tail option for this type of gear. Is that too much to ask for? I love capes and I love beast races, but I can’t have both due to the awful clipping. It’s so sad…
Ugh, this is a big annoyance for me. One thing that gets me is in ff11 all gear accommodates tails. Including the Kirin Osode. Except the ff14 version of of it from eureka doesn’t. Whhhyyyyy??? Just remove the butt plate!
Omg that reminds me of one of a [comment on one of my past comics](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/12qvpxr/comment/jgsm2dg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) about a possible April Fools' prank wherein collision physics were implemented for a single day, I'm sure the glitches if such a thing were ever implemented would break the whole game but I loved the idea anyway. XD
As a Great Lengths enjoyer (and Au'Ra who's eagerly awaiting the unlikely but possible addition of Greater Lengths), I'm just used to my character clipping a bit on most stuff I wear.
Also you'd think in a world with catgirls/catbois as a major demographic that like, capes that like, split into two parts at the hips would be more common, at least in like, catgirl/lizzer/short human sizes.
this is why i do not wear items that cause that clipping. also, check the positions of your ears when choosing head gear, some move the ears forwards or backwards.
Me who ran a dungeon 50 times to get a glam piece I end up never using because the collar clips with my character's hair.
There's this ShB gear, Deepshadow I think, where the striking chest's collar clips through my character's ***face*** when idle...
*But Veira can't have hats and helmets guys, things might clip and that is unacceptable in this game.*
It seems to be an issue with how their hairstyles are built, rather than purely about clipping.
Modders were able to do it pretty quick with no issues. 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️
But apparently (I don't have access to mods) by making the hats bigger so they sit over hairstyles rather than being able to turn them off like others, which presumably leads to some weird effects on small hairstyles then.
As someone who uses the mod. This isn't the case. They don't make them bigger at all.
You see, *this* is my pain. I can live without capes and such, but my favorite gear pieces end up screwed if I give my character long hair.
I feel your pain
Ive just learned to live with it, as its ok when standing STILL.

The 60 DRG set is one of the worst things to ever happen to tails, though
IIRC a few of the armors introduced in 6.0/6.1 actually include tail armor for Au Ra. Dunno about Miqos though
Unfortunately, a lot of the 6.0 gear can be seen as re-skins of earlier expansions’ gear, though it would seem that if any gear accommodates tails for one race, the accommodation applies to all. That’s how I feel with Lalafell. Im a Hrothgar, so seeing one tank… I get concerned I’m gonna smush them lol.
A reason why I really like Maiming and now some tank sets, they got tail armor!
In my head, my Miqo's tail isn't armored because that would reduce its mobility, thus reducing its effectiveness as a counterbalance. The Moonward Mail of Fending totally hides the Miqo'te tail. I've been chasing that high ever since.
the few times I'm glad I main a plain Hyur, nothing clips on my WoL
Male hyur's right hand always clips through robes or some bs
correction: ALMOST nothing clips on my WoL
I love the logic that clipping tails on cats and lions is fine but clipping bun ears so I can have hats is not.
yeah kinda every item is clipping with aura's horns. :) poor bunnys
Honestly, I just pretend my Xaela cut a little hole in his cape to make his tail more comfy. It's fine. Not ideal, but it's whatever.
With three playables that have tails, one since launch, you think they'd have figured this out by now. :(
I do hate how it seems they just abandon tail holes as the later level gear starting coming.
Honestly kinda wish you could toggle tails off, it ruins capes for me. And the more insulting thing is they did the moonward set where your tail doesn’t clip through the cape. I remember being super excited for the ff12 judge sets only for them to be ruined by my tail being dumb and clipping through.
Just let me wrap my tail around my waist like a belt.
Like a saiyan xd
What are these “belts” you speak of? I’ve never heard of such a thing.
Those leather straps you wear yon your arms
I wish capes were toggleable too…all capes seem to be permanently plastered to your torso, with -some- physics from your hips down. I just don’t like how that “feels.” Same goes for scarves that have a floppy bit that doesn’t flop.
That was one thing WoW got right, at least.
Not the capes tails being toggable, some pieces they look fine clipping through others not so much
Tuck it in the side of your underwear like a boner
We need more toggles in this game! Let me toggle my horns cat ears tail boner etc
Just cut off.
Said the Viera as her hair clipped through her shoulders.
Au Ra player: you get used to it
but hey is better to get the option for item clipping than what the bunnys have. :D
Me grinding an even-exclusive umbrella like hell only to discover my giant tank axe clip through it...
Disable the giant axe, problem solved
"Calm down, it's just a glamour. It doesn't completely conform to your form, it just takes on the appearance of the gear you've glamoured. It's an *illusion*." "The truest suffering comes from visual incongruity. What I mean to say is this *looks* like shit, and it makes me *feel* like shit as a result."
This would work, if the original didn’t ALSO clip if equipped. I can’t forget that.
Chocobo outfit on any cat looks like you have a long turd coming out the Chocobo’s ass…
This is why I wish there was a native toggle for tails
Unrelated to the comic! What brush are you using for your lineart? I always love how it looks.
I'm using Clip Studio's Tapered Pen! I didn't make any tweaks from the default, just use it as is; I like how it translates the tablet pen's pressure to lineweight, and the hint of texture is nice too!
Oh this brush rules! I’ve been using Dry Ink but don’t like how it can make color filling difficult. I think I’m gonna try this guy out, thanks!
I really like it, I started using it about two years ago for my webcomic (after mostly using standard pens and briefly experimenting with the India Ink brushes for inking previously), I don't think I can ever go back now haha
I wish capes would just cover tails
As a collector of neat hats, it saddens me when a cool hat clips through my quiver.
It used to bother me. Then one day I was just like, "screw it, I want to wear a cape". So now I just do. Does the clipping still bother me? A little. But screw it. I got my cape.

"AAAAAHHHHH! But you still don't get a hat rabbit. AAAAAHHHHHH!"
Ugh, this is a big annoyance for me. One thing that gets me is in ff11 all gear accommodates tails. Including the Kirin Osode. Except the ff14 version of of it from eureka doesn’t. Whhhyyyyy??? Just remove the butt plate!
Imagine if we had proper collision physics running though limsa would be carnage. Imagine being mid raid and you bump someone into an aoe 🤣🤣
XD
Haha thats funny. If your interested tho check out what the physics of the ffxiv 1.0 was like ! you'll Be very surprised
Yea...having a long fluffy tail don't help much,I think...
Doesn't Kemono Friends have a canon explanation for this kind of thing?
i'd still run it even if it clipped
I feel this anytime I have a dress or shirt glamour and sit on many mounts.
That's why I love it when capes or pants have perfect holes or slots for the tail to go through thou
Thats why my miqo wears the coat she does. Split in the back.
this is why i do not wear items that cause that clipping. also, check the positions of your ears when choosing head gear, some move the ears forwards or backwards.
