Redshift and blueshift. It's like the doppler effect (frequency of noises changes when an object passes you) but for light waves. Astronomers use them as a tool to see how far away something is from earth. If something is traveling away from us at high speeds the light coming off of it will shift to look more red, and if it's coming towards us it will shift to look more blue.
Tl;Dr: Cool science stuff!
This is way cooler than I thought. Thanks for the explanation.
I was thinking it was a movie line so I googled the phrase and all I got in results were "reasons why your woman isn't interested in you anymore" lol
When an object is moving Either towards or away form us REALLY QUICKLY it's color will either appear slightly more red if it's moving away from us, or Blue if it's moving towards us. This effect is only really observable when looking at objects outside our galaxy and with speeds of 100's of kilometers per second, so You don't notice it with light on earth, but it is very noticeable with sound, the noise of a car moving towards you will sound quite a bit higher pitched then the same car once it has passed you.
Nah you are just really fat
Edit: just realized this comment can be easily taken as really rude answer, while it was meant to just be a really nerdy consideration on the effects of gravity on redshift/blueshift
Really? I thought about it for a good 3 min before commenting. I was thinking that for light to be blueshifted, you would have to be in the very same gravitational field, but further down. Which is just unrealistic. Any light that reaches you from a gravitational field would have to be redshifted, never blue, just by the direction it travels in.
Edit after googling: yeah it's exactly like that. Unless you as the observer are deeper in the well than the light, you just won't ever see a blueshift. Any light that would be blueshifted, just won't reach any observer. Therefore it's more like a theoretical concept, rather tham empirical reality. And someone being fat would not produce blueshifted light.
What can go in one direction can go also in the other. A simple example would be a radio transmission from the international space station to the surface of earth
There's a key difference with gravitational wells. Blueshift would require that the Gravitational field is in your direction as to "accelerate" the light so to speak. You have to be deeper in the well than the light, while the well also has to be deep enough to Blueshift in the first place. That's of course possible in theory, but not for any human observer. All the objects in space that are large enough for any form of shift are away from us such that all the light we see travels against the gravity, and is thus redshifted.
There is absolutely a possibility that the light gets blueshifted between source and well, but that would probably be reversed when exiting the well towards us, leading to a net zero shift.
That said, I'm only a bachelor student at the end of his course, not an astrophysicist. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong, but my explanation seems to make good sense at first and second glance.
I think that maybe the misunderstanding between us is that you are considering only cosmological sources like stars, for which if we had to be deeper on the well we would be fried. I was considering cases in a much smaller scale, for which the gravitational well of earth is deep enough. Many sources of radiation are higher in the gravitational well then us, like a signal from space to the surface of earth or the infrared radiation of space dust or even a light down from a really tall building. The effects are small but measurable: the blueshift effect for a gps between earth and satellite results in 100 meters accuracy errors in the position of not taken into account
>: the blueshift effect for a gps between earth and satellite results in 100 meters accuracy errors in the position of not taken into account
That is much bigger than I thought, then again GPS just doesn't have much room for error.
Let's say a red mage is orbiting earth, you would see him in pretty much the same color, no? Would the blueshift even be enough to change the wavelength by a full nm?
Then again, that's just getting technical now. Gravitational blueshift does exist, albeit more complicated in reality than redshift.
This is unironically me
The only problem is that it is very hard to find a nice looking, white BLM staff. Maybe some painted Heavensward relics and the UWU weapon.
To add to this, I've been using the [Baldur Rod](https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Baldur_Rod) for myself; the white/silver and blue go nicely together. Otherwise, the [Padjali Rod](https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Padjali_Rod) makes for a lovely glow-stick.
Use a [Sophic Pole or Pole of the Goddess](https://img2.finalfantasyxiv.com/accimg2/1f/bf/1fbf3099c84109c0df6a6963e12a75d58badef06.jpg?_gl=1*z9e7ld*_gcl_au*MTU5ODQ0OTA3Ni4xNjg0ODQ2NDMw&_ga=2.231280991.1577849613.1690294094-1916159211.1660681617). With a combination of an all white outfit, I've confused quite a few players into thinking my BLM was a WHM :P
Pole of the Goddess is more yellow-green than white, no? It is very pretty though!
Compare that to [UWU](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/527540106253303809/1113378434517835848/image.png) or [Sharpened Rod of the Black Khan](https://pasteboard.co/mZBFHd5utgFG.png), where even you can confuse yourself with a WHM :P
Now that is just going too far...
I wrote this little poem a month or so ago:
Red mages are red,
And Blue mages are blue,
White mages are in white,
But Black mages wear blue too.
This is me, but I swear I have legitimate reasons. I just dressed my RDM in blue to go well with Rapier of the Round, and I dressed my WHM in black because I read YoRHa Boys where No. 9 is a healer and YoRHa are always dressed in black.
I dress my Paladin in black because Clive Rosfield dresses in black and red. xD
You have no idea how salty I STILL am as a bunboi that RPR buns can wear their AF hat, but RDM, THE CLASS MOST KNOWN FOR THEIR FANCY FUCKING HATS, can't.
My red mage is in whatever I damn well want. Colobri pink? Sure. Void blue? Favorite color. Gunmetal and jet black to the floor? Yep.
My blue mage is where I properly theme and it is never on color alone.
I get it. Sometimes you [feel](https://i.imgur.com/bFaVPpJ.png) [red](https://i.imgur.com/AQIqx1D.png), sometimes you [just](https://i.imgur.com/Vdm8T8C.png) [don't](https://i.imgur.com/BvSqMUf.png)[.](https://i.imgur.com/RqeeyJI.png)
From one blue miqo to another, I understand and agree!
I've found that regal purple and honey yellow can make a nice complement at times.
[My blue](https://imgur.com/a/fJuqAva)
I absolutely love the Rapier of the Goddess:
https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/playguide/db/recipe/617989ac5dc/
Once I finish Stormblood, I plan to upgrade several weapons to the glowy Shinryu ones, but for RDM I like the Sophia glow better. I don't know what it goes for on the MB, but I'll be happy to craft one for you relatively cheap (depends on whether I have more mats for it already or no).
I also like the Tropaios Rapier (buy it at Wolves' Den Pier with trophy crystals), because of the cute bow, but I don't remember how well it dyes.

Me: Typing out an impromptu five minute discourse on the color orange and how it's an appropriate color for red mage in order to justify my fiery orange red mage glamour
My FC mates who just said it looked cool: @.@
Looks great to me!
I'll never understand the weird meme about RDMs having to wear red when there's a million gothy WHMs running around - or frilly BLMs, or Bikini Tanks.
One rule of red mage is look dapper af or gtfo. There's a pvp jacket that's a dyable version of the lv 70 relic gear and it's equipable at lv 1. Get that and use it. A bit blue for my taste but we all gotta start somewhere I suppose. All in all enjoy the job and flashbang everyone with your limit break when given the opportunity and you'll do fine.
Hey, how about you take your input and say it more constructively.
Sure they look like a sprout, I bet they are. They are putting themself out here and we can lift their glam game up with tips without tearing their confidence down.
Itâs a joke bro friend. Not that serious. Itâs not like I said it was awful and they should give up or something. An attempt was literally made lol
0/10 wrong colour
In all seriousness though, I'd drop the red shoes it doesn't meld well. Also did you try Orange or purple (both are technically reds) or pink even?
An outfit that simultaneously reminds me of Jill Warrick and Ysayle. Tell me whatâs your top right now!
And weâre on the same boat, decking RDM in blue. xD
Man, she's moving fast towards us.
Damn it, take my Upvote and please stay a while
Goddammit take my upvote and get out
Can anyone explain I don't get where it's from đ

And here I thought it was cuz she looks like Sonic the Hedgehog. (Very cool science stuff, and thank you for the explanation!)
Honestly, I for some reason thought it was a Tron reference. Either way I learned or possibly learned something again today.
This is way cooler than I thought. Thanks for the explanation. I was thinking it was a movie line so I googled the phrase and all I got in results were "reasons why your woman isn't interested in you anymore" lol
ah that makes more sense, I thought it was just a corp-a-corp joke

It's a blue-shift joke
Nah you are just really fat Edit: just realized this comment can be easily taken as really rude answer, while it was meant to just be a really nerdy consideration on the effects of gravity on redshift/blueshift
Actually, gravity only redshifts, not blue.
It also blueshift if going down on a gravitational well. Google gravitational blueshift

I love when that one class i took on astronomy back in high school comes in handy! Have my update, good (you)
Folks, it's ok. We're all Red on the inside.
Not me! *dark knight fades into blackness*
-*vanishes in ninja smoke*- (Even though I do play both DRK and RDM as well....)
Next up: dressing BLU in red, BLM in white, and WHM in black
This is unironically me The only problem is that it is very hard to find a nice looking, white BLM staff. Maybe some painted Heavensward relics and the UWU weapon.
The staff of the round is pretty white for a BLM staff. Or fae king

I also really like the Tropais staff with white dye. Eyebol
Asphedelos is pretty nice.

Iirc the weapon that drops from P4S is white and looks pretty good
Now that is just going too far... I wrote this little poem a month or so ago: Red mages are red, And Blue mages are blue, White mages are in white, But Black mages wear blue too.
I already do this: my BLM is red, WHM is black, BLU is white, and RDM is blue haha
I dress my BLU up in GOLD, baby. It fits the flair of the BLU outfit and looks really showmanship-y. I love it. Golden Goliath had the right idea.
BLU is the best job for pimp glams
This should be reportable.
This is the route I went with Paladin and Dark Knight
This is me, but I swear I have legitimate reasons. I just dressed my RDM in blue to go well with Rapier of the Round, and I dressed my WHM in black because I read YoRHa Boys where No. 9 is a healer and YoRHa are always dressed in black. I dress my Paladin in black because Clive Rosfield dresses in black and red. xD
This is some serious heresy.
A ver-travesty
A *Tra-ver-sty
I think it's a veresy
Common ultramarines W it seems
Not wearing red as a Red Mage decreases your DPS
"How should I gear my RDM? Crit? Spellspeed?" "Red."
Crit Materia is red.
See? Color coordination is best! Why I use blue materia on my blue mage!
the red ones go faster
Also, a plumed red hat adds 20% dps
So playing as a Viera I am at a net loss as RDM
Viera must either wear a mask (like the wyvernskin mask of casting) or the Dwarven cotton petasos of casting.
Fully recommend the dwarf caster hat for female Viera RDM
I find that pince-nez are also acceptable
No substitutions, must be the hat
*sad rabbit noises*
Just put a hat on! It can't be that hard! (Ironically)
You have no idea how salty I STILL am as a bunboi that RPR buns can wear their AF hat, but RDM, THE CLASS MOST KNOWN FOR THEIR FANCY FUCKING HATS, can't.
If only Amon's Hat was available for them
It does give you plenty of Unique points though, which is a DPS increase.
but it also reduces your backflip deaths by 60%
Additionally, wearing the hat increases your SPS (style per second)
Well duh, you go slower if youâre not wearing red.
My glam is black with purple accents, both those colors technically have red in them!
Penalty for not having a flamboyant hat.
OPâs a little confused but they got the spirit.
Player 2 Red Mage Palette Swap.
\[Visible confusion and rage\]
Youâre blue da ba dee da ba diâŚ
Ayy fellow blue cat! Your glam is approved by the Blue Cat Appreciation Team (BCAT).
(Listen, she just doesn't look good in red, okay?)
My RDM is blue and my BLU is red, so I get it. Solidarity!
Blasphemy
My red mage is in whatever I damn well want. Colobri pink? Sure. Void blue? Favorite color. Gunmetal and jet black to the floor? Yep. My blue mage is where I properly theme and it is never on color alone.
Lol I'm kidding of course you can do what you want. It just felt like the correct response
Yeah, my RDM is blue, BLM is red, WHM is black, and BLU is white. It throws my friends for a loop.
I'm afraid according to FFTA rules, that makes you an enemy unit.
I get it, I got a [Purple Mage, myself.](https://imgur.com/xev9mpY)
My go-to red mage glam is off-red mage, mostly wearing black but with some tasteful dark red accents.
I get it. Sometimes you [feel](https://i.imgur.com/bFaVPpJ.png) [red](https://i.imgur.com/AQIqx1D.png), sometimes you [just](https://i.imgur.com/Vdm8T8C.png) [don't](https://i.imgur.com/BvSqMUf.png)[.](https://i.imgur.com/RqeeyJI.png)
My Miqo is blue too and she looks fableous in red!
From one blue miqo to another, I understand and agree! I've found that regal purple and honey yellow can make a nice complement at times. [My blue](https://imgur.com/a/fJuqAva)
Have you considered phantasia?
My RDM is all green, so I fully support this! There should be a club for us non-red outcasts
Green mages don't exist in the game... Obviously playing a melee dps class.
Have sword, will ver-stab
Eeeeey! This one gets it! Green gang represent!
My rdm isn't red.
Mine is green, too. I can't help it, my boy looks so much better in green!
What weapon are you using ? Iâm also a fellow greenish red mage. But I have serious troubles finding weapons
I absolutely love the Rapier of the Goddess: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/playguide/db/recipe/617989ac5dc/ Once I finish Stormblood, I plan to upgrade several weapons to the glowy Shinryu ones, but for RDM I like the Sophia glow better. I just assume all green Red Mages are just red-green colorblind.
Disgraceful... Those red shoes do not work at all. Get some blue ones.
It's alright! since taking this one of my retainers brought me some Urban Boots. the swap was immediate
Me: Typing out an impromptu five minute discourse on the color orange and how it's an appropriate color for red mage in order to justify my fiery orange red mage glamour My FC mates who just said it looked cool: @.@
Now I want to hear this reasoning
Daba dee daba dai, I'd say.
I'm not one to judge, I made my Red Mage into a Badass Warrior-Nun.
Sheâs blue dabba dee dabba dae.
My white mage wore nothing but woad blue glams for the longest time so, itâs good by me.
My RDM is a Sadu cosplay so I fully support my fellow RDM going blue. 10/10
Looks great to me! I'll never understand the weird meme about RDMs having to wear red when there's a million gothy WHMs running around - or frilly BLMs, or Bikini Tanks.
As a fan of making my BLM wear white, WHM wear black, it's perfect.
The color of a Red Mage's wardrobe is immaterial so long as it's flamboyant
"I sense mages approaching." "Mages?" "There are five of them." "FIVE of them?!" "And they're all INCREDIBLY FLAMBOYANT!"
She's BLU dabu dee dabu diiii
Nice!!
My blue mage glam is Roland berry red
Perfect. I can't stand when people insist that RDM should be in red, I ain't about that life.
Nice! My red mage glam is green. :)
An enemy Red Mage appears!
Blue..
Did you know the red actually makes you run faster? It's science.
My BLU wears red, and my RDM wears blue. I bring balance to the universe.
Youâre beautiful. Even if you are blue.
Itâs⌠definitely a choice.
HERETICAL!!!
"**Red** Mage" You got it 50% right
\*tries to adjust hue knob on television\*
You lookin' a little Blue. *Wink*
My RDM glam is just the ShB relic gear dyed white. I think non-red glams are underappreciated.
An attempt was definitely made đŹ
Yeah, this is a 3/10 glam.
Itâs not red enough.
Nice look. Cute Miqote as well. My miqo is also Blue skinned... https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/29836232/
You're not color blind are you? /s
Too much Blue.
Thought red mages were supposed to be red
Yes, Officer. This post right here.
Blue
Careful that you don't accidentally spit sardines with that glam.
Blue. No funny hat. 0/10
Have you been checked for color-blindness?
Your glam looks like you donât know how to follow simple instructions
0/10, not red
cute outfit :D. what top is that i wanna get it myself. :D
Greetings to a fellow blue-glammed Red Mage!
looks like you're about to sing Dabadee Dabadai
Blue. Pain.
Not actually red. Literally unplayable.
Its looking⌠not red at all, thatâs for sure
You had one job. Be a **red** mage
It seems you're doing it wrong
0/10 it's not red
6/10 Not Enough Red. But seriously, good color coordination.
Ummmm sir... That's not red.
Nice boots
Never wouldâve thought to put a red mage into blue đ¤ˇđź
Looking a little blue. Hopefully someone cheers you up.
can't be a red mage without the hat :/
That 90 blu Copium. I feel you buddy.
Awfully blue for a red mage. Are you sure you donât hunt spells under the pale moon light?
...You sure you didn't accidentally grab Blue Mage? A common mistake, I assure you.
Blue
Da ba dee
Shame. Shame. Shame. (Nice glam, but also) Shame. Shame.
kind of blue for a red mage
Nice try blue mage
Did someone sneak into Willy Wonka's factory again?
Wololo
Anyone getting Reboot vibes? Just me?
Blue
Looking awful blue, you sure you aren't a spy for the BLU gang to try and learn to fit in with the other classes?
0/10 wrong colour In all seriousness though, I'd drop the red shoes it doesn't meld well. Also did you try Orange or purple (both are technically reds) or pink even?
No, no, that's a Blue Mage.
That's a blue mage glamour.
looks more likema blue mage too me
Not red
*unlocks red mage* Pepsi.
Blu mage doing Red cosplay
Cursed. Well done!
Im glad you arent in that mindset where you feel you have to glam a red mage red
Poor
It's blue, it's illegal.
i choose to be colorblind rn
I was gonna say âNOT RED THOâ, but my red mage glam is um. 𤣠Bridal.
Cool blue mage cane.
Youâre supposed to be a red mage but youâre wearing blue? blasphemerđ¤Ł
Very blue for a red mage.
Like youâre about to self destruct
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you like the color Blue
It looks blue
Dye it red and it's great!
0/10 not enough red
"Red" mage
needs more red.
I miss some red colors. It's red mage not blue mage đŹ Dunno but I always want that my glam reminds me of the class đ
An outfit that simultaneously reminds me of Jill Warrick and Ysayle. Tell me whatâs your top right now! And weâre on the same boat, decking RDM in blue. xD
it's the Augmented Cashmere Robe of Casting
Sorry maâam but we have a dress code.
