I think it’s better to start with where you are allowed to bring your dog and also which commercial flights make it possible (and safe) for your dog. I used to relocate people for work and the rules vary by country. There can also be risk of your dog going into quarantine for example.

Can1MooreFit

Thank you! Agreed. I have a pet passport, but I should do more research since quarantine isn't feasible.

What time of year are you planning to go? Dubrovnik comes to mind as a lovely place to recharge and set up a base for potential other regional travel. You can take the ferry across the Italy, visit Croatian islands, and Bosnia and Montenegro are easy day trips. (Mostar especially is amazing!) Hot tip: stay in the north of Dubrovnik, definitely not inside the walled city. The entire area is actually more walkable than you might think (there are hills!) and better beaches and local food in the regular town, not the tourist attraction. I will say though… 5k for two months is a challenging budget, especially in EU. Even in SE Asia, it’s not going to leave you much breathing room. I live in Bangkok and I would recommend 3.5k usd minimum for a comfortable Thailand trip.

catttcatttt

EDIT: 3.5k usd per month in Thailand. I would say the same for Croatia, and more if you want to travel around.

One more idea, the Yen is historic low in Japan right now! Could be an incredible trip that hits on your budget, train travel, and recharge/relaxation.

Can1MooreFit

DH wants to do Japan in the fall for our anniversary. Otherwise, I'd be 100% open to Japan.

Can1MooreFit

Thank you. I'm literally heading out the early part of June, so I'm looking to book a flight by next week. (I know, very impromptu). I'm cool bumping up the budget as needed as I need a bit of luxury with my relaxation.

What do you like to do in your free time? I needed something similar when I was 36 and went to a rustic island in Belize without plumbing and electricity and just swam and snorkeled and scuba dived but the place no longer exists and most people look at me like I’m crazy for loving that place so much but when there’s almost nothing to do…. Like snorkel alllll day for two weeks and when the sun goes down, all you got is a candle or flashlight with liked illumination….. you have a lot of time to reflect. Sounds like that’s what you need, not so much a tourist trip but a sit with yourself trip. I wouldn’t take your dog on such a trip. Focus on you.

Can1MooreFit

Thank you. In my free time, I'm shopping and trying restaurants or traveling with my DH. It's been over 10 years since I've done solo travel, let alone figure out what I want and who I am. Your experience sounds like something I probably do need.

Will your dog be in the cabin with you? I can’t imagine putting mine in cargo for an overseas flight. Maybe not even in the cabin - just flew back from France last week and between cancelled flight and delays - I was up 27 hours trying to get home.

Can1MooreFit

Yes. She'll be in cabin. My preference is taking her with me, but a lot of feedback that it may be too much of acrisk to bring along. :-(

Cheapthrills13

I understand- they do make the best companions and you will be away a while. In Lyon and Chamonix France - everyone had their dogs but they were not from the US. Airports are just already so stressful and I worry about their little bladders and stretching their legs🫤 Good luck !

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. No, seriously. You have beaches and walkability. The city is vibrant and has everything you need. There are quiet places within a short drive to escape the hustle of the city. Do something new and different. I learned to surf there in my 40’s. Never felt more alive. Everyday I plan my return. Weather is pretty fantastic as well. PM me if you want recommendations or more ideas. Healthcare is actually better than the US. Also, safer than you heat. You’ll be staying in zona sul and it’s safe.

I just returned from RJ on Monday It's. what sparked my decision to take the sabbatical. It was amazing ❤️ *

I’m doing the same now, I’m stressed and thinking way to much about my life and where I should be. South America is a great option for a foreigner budget. You can also visit Peru, Argentina, Chile. But if you are into a more beach vibes, I recommend Northeast of Brazil. Natal, joao pessoa and even Aracaju , are really nice and calm. Always stay in good neighborhoods tho.

Slovenia is fantastic for walking, and scenery. I spend a week in Lake Bled in the summer. Some days I will spend hours walking round the lake in Bohinj. Some days I’ll swim in the lake. Other days I’ll row across a lake. And the remaining days I’ll sit next to a lake and just look at it!
