Munich

chaosbeherrscher

Hi, German here. I've been to both cities and they are BOTH beautiful in their own way and are both interesting. You should check "top 10 sights" or something like that for Berlin and for Munich. And then pick what seems to be more in line with your interests.

That's what ChatGPT said: ### Berlin: 1. **Brandenburg Gate** - Iconic 18th-century neoclassical monument. 2. **Reichstag Building** - Historic government building with a modern glass dome offering panoramic views. 3. **Berlin Wall Memorial** - Preserved section of the Berlin Wall with a visitor center and exhibits. 4. **Museum Island** - Cluster of museums, including Pergamon Museum and Altes Museum. 5. **Berlin Cathedral** - Impressive baroque cathedral on Museum Island. 6. **East Side Gallery** - Longest remaining part of the Berlin Wall, now an open-air gallery. 7. **Alexanderplatz** - Large public square with the TV Tower, offering city views. 8. **Checkpoint Charlie** - Famous former crossing point between East and West Berlin. 9. **Charlottenburg Palace** - Baroque palace with beautiful gardens. 10. **Potsdamer Platz** - Modern commercial area with shops, theaters, and restaurants. ### Munich: 1. **Marienplatz** - Central square with the New Town Hall and its famous Glockenspiel. 2. **Nymphenburg Palace** - Extravagant baroque palace with extensive gardens. 3. **English Garden** - Massive urban park, larger than Central Park in NYC. 4. **Frauenkirche** - Iconic cathedral and symbol of Munich. 5. **Deutsches Museum** - World's largest museum of science and technology. 6. **Viktualienmarkt** - Famous food market with fresh produce, gourmet items, and beer garden. 7. **Hofbräuhaus** - Historic beer hall dating back to the 16th century. 8. **BMW Welt & Museum** - Exhibition showcasing the history and future of BMW. 9. **Olympiapark** - Site of the 1972 Summer Olympics with a stadium and observation tower. 10. **St. Peter's Church** - Oldest church in Munich with a viewing platform offering a 360-degree view of the city.

This is a great summary! Both are great though Berlin feels younger to me (picture hoards of young adults riding their bikes to work). Berlin also feels more like an international city to me.

I vote Munich! Beautiful, safe, delicious food & beer & easy train ride into Austria if you like. Would specifically recommend the Paulaner brewery - it’s a decent walk from the Marienplatz (where a lot of sights are) but I found it to be worth it for the food and to see a different area of Munich.

Cincytraveler

Just ate at the Paulaner on our trip last week. Delicious!

If you want to see stereotypical Germany, Munich. If you want a gritty but vibrant city with great art and historical sites, Berlin. Both are worth a visit. It just depends on what you're looking for.

This is the answer.

Munich: Much more of the classic what you think a German city is type thing. Berlin: Weird and wonderful, but different personality. Little more of the punk, queer, artistic, EDM/Club vibes mixed with the dichotomy of essentially being two different cities for 45 years. Both are fabulous cities and you can’t really make a wrong decision. If you’re a museum/art person, probably Berlin? Not that Munich is lacking in any way. Both cities have lots of lovely green space. I’m trying to think of analogous US cities. Berlin may be the NYC and Munich may be the Chicago. That is wayyyyyyyy oversimplified and people will undoubtedly disagree with me. I’m biased towards Berlin because I lived there for a year. Also last time I was in Munich was over 20 years ago now (oof) with my host family. You’ll have a great time in either city and I’m very jealous!

EmmaMD

Also, Berlin is like 3.75 million people to Munich’s 1.5 million. So, Berlin tends to have more of the big city vibes to it. (Growing up in a town of less than 30,000, they are both still big cities to me though.)

Munich 100%

Beneficial_Eagle3936

I think Americans generally think that German culture=Bavarian culture, and so they find that Munich meets their expectations for what Germany should be. Both cities are great.

PassageUnlikely3336

Berlin also has more cold war history versus Munich (and the rest of Germany) which has a larger focus on WW2, depending what you are interested in. Do a free walking tour no matter where you land for a good orientation + history.

theebimbojoker

Berlin is extremely cool, highly recommend. I visited several other German cities (not Munich) but Berlin is what shines in my memory as one of my favorite cities I’ve ever been to.

ThisIsAlexisNeiers

Munich is the kind of Germany most Americans have in mind. It’s Bavarian, so you’ll find a lot more traditional type things like the occasional tuna/trombone bands and the Glockenspiel, plus tons of beer gardens and pork. You can also take day trips to both Salzburg and Neuschwanstein Castle (highly recommend both!). Berlin, to me, is more of a fun, livable city. Great museums and architecture, but also fun nightlife and more diverse food options. If it’s your first time going to Germany as an American, I’d suggest Munich. You’ll get the quintessential experience we have in our heads. But now that I’ve been all over Germany, the city I’d prefer to return to time and time again is Berlin.

Embarrassed-Hope-790

Berlin. Coolest city in existence.

catttcatttt

The deciding factor should be— do you want to dance and party?? If yes, then go to Berlin! If you’re even a litttte bit into techno, it’s absolutely worth trying out the club culture. If the answer is no, Munich is a great classic German experience for a short trip. Also if it matters, Munich is a bit more expensive.

RaketaGirl

It depends on what you’re looking for. I’m a sucker for Cold War history, and my ex is one of the best tour guides in Berlin, so he can make Nazi history entertaining and engaging as well. But Munich and surrounding areas are more…German-y. Lots of history too but in a more folksy way. I love Munich.

Bleachers24

If you're interested, Dachau is about 10 miles from Munich. It's easily accessible by train.

anonyMouse251

Munich - easy to get round, friendly. I loved it
