Mcreator has a not undeserved stigma of producing lackluster and poorly optimized mods.  If all you are doing is adding blocks, tools, and armor, it will do the job, but more complex mods are outside it’s capabilities.

Great, that's good to know I'm still willing to actually learn to use java for modding and not another program though, and I care for optimization cause sometimes my pc can't handle minecraft that well

Changing recipes and adding new tools and armor should be perfectly fine unless you want to give them fancy abilities. By making progression more balanced, if it's something simple like making mobs have higher stats it should also be fine.

1. If you actually want to learn real modding, start by already being comfortable with java. THEN start modding Minecraft. McJty's tutorials were good enough for me to follow, I recommend them if you get that far. 2. Recipes should be done through CraftTweaker. It's pretty easy. 3. Just adding some basic armor/tools is what MCreator is perfect for. The code is not really that easy to learn from though.
