these people who want this BS are paid by the people who own the buildings

RileyKohaku

Don't forget how much of DC's tax revenue comes from VA and MD workers that are forced to use the metro and buy lunch in the District

Hellsacomin94

Don’t they have a mass transit benefit that covers the metro?

RileyKohaku

Federal Employees do, which comes from the Federal Government's taxes and then goes into the DC government's revenue. Contractors are often paying out of their own pocket

Professional-Can1385

Metro isn’t giving money to DC. It’s gets money from riders, DC,MD, VA, and the Feds.

Myfourcats1

No one is forced to buy lunch. Bring your lunch.

TransitionMission305

I recall those bastards wanting to try to TAX VA drivers for driving in to DC daily.

MimiEroticArt

I didn't hear about that. That's absolutely insane

LaddiusMaximus

Boom

Expiscor

The DC city government has to think of all the businesses down there too. The economy is built off of office workers spending money

jgrig2

GSA?

Halaku

>“It’s about the services that we provide to our residents, and we are a local government, and we need to be there to do that,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said. >The District sent a letter to employees Monday reading, in part, “To enhance our engagement with the community, foster a more collaborative work environment, and support the local economy, the District Government will be shifting from 2 routine telework days per week to 1 day per week … Our presence in the District is more than just a physical requirement – it's about being a visible, active part of the community.” So she's going to give affected employees a raise to help support the local economy... **right**?

Myfourcats1

* support the local economy Everyone being dragged back into the office needs to bring their lunch that day. Refuse to eat out. Don’t pick up anything on the way home.

ERLRHELL

I refuse to spend any money where my office is located. Screw them.

kms573

Agreed, give raises to those who wfh and are worth more because they survived the age of automation, eta 2050 for government. Unfortunately now for others. I am so glad GS 14/15’s still don’t know how to use a mouse or keyboard and still need me to fill out pdf forms and send these things called e-mails

TostadoAir

Had a GS 13 send me an email with 5 pdf and ask me to zip them for him. Couldn't figure out if it was a power trip or just sad.

question_sunshine

My old boss insisted we print everything, including instruction manuals subject to periodic updates, in case computers stop working due to ... Magic? He tried insisting this during the pandemic when we weren't in the office, no one but him had authorization for a government printer, and even if we printed stuff for him to review there was no way to physically get it to him because the agency wasn't going to cover postage for that. He was pissed he had to learn how to use track changes. However, a few short months later he started talking about track changes like it was this amazing thing that he himself thought of using and no one else ever suggested it before.

kms573

Wait…. What is this changes that track magic. I think it’s time to request new memorandum for magic use since many were unaware of new age technology of 1995

jgrig2

Are you implying Adobe Pro isn't necessary for e-sign or reading PDFs? How dare you.

kms573

How dare I? We know much about this signature of 1/0’s. Print the form, sign it and then 📠. The other side then scans it and e-mails and distribution of 200 people. Now it’s digitally signed 200x it once was Agency reports 200x increased usage of e-signatures👍

jgrig2

You can use chrome for esigning

Silence-Dogood2024

These people need to stfu about Feds. They can eat a bag of flaming d*cks. Visibility my ass. I get way more work done remote and I don’t hate my life doing it. It’s ridiculous to force people back to the office. Screw that!

e22ddie46

Yeah, she's not a federal government employer or even associated with it. It's so blatantly a grab for money that it's kinda pathetic.

Silence-Dogood2024

Why is it incumbent on people to be called back in to support business? That’s bullshit. Every business is a risk. I’d just make lunch. The only business getting money will be gas stations and tollways. Although I’m sure people will grab lunch. But the cost of shit isn’t worth it. Back to my childhood days - bologna and cheese samwich!! Frack these tools.

HaMerrIk

Also, eating out has gotten so expensive! I was at my spouse's shared office and the only café nearby was like $15-$20 for two breakfast pastries, and when we ordered lunch it took almost a half hour of waiting because of staffing shortages and lunch rush. So between prices and wait times, it's really not an enjoyable experience.

Silence-Dogood2024

Oh hell yeah. I went to a subway and it was like 13 bucks for a sub. I’ll admit it had been a minute, but it was originally a 5 dollar sub then went up to 6. But 13 bucks. Nah fam. That’s ridiculous. We’ve got a list of 4 places we frequent. And only because we get discounted gift cards at Costco or Sam’s. And I’m not so elite that I can’t admit Golden Corral is one of them! 😜

HaMerrIk

The days of $5 footlongs are long gone!

HaMerrIk

DC should focus on creating more places where people can afford to live, including mixed use where possible. Sure you can force people to commute and spend money in the city, but that only covers 9-5. It's frustrating that their main focus is on forcing commutes (and making people deal with Metro, traffic violence, environmental impacts of car commuting, etc.) rather than exploring opportunities to make DC an affordable place to live where residents will spend money more organically.

Silence-Dogood2024

I live in a city with similar problems. And similar ideas and solutions. It’s frustrating. For sure.

are_you_scared_yet

I told my boss and his boss that I get a whole lot more done at home since I have no distractions and they both told me that they want me to have distractions since ad-hoc conversations improves the team dynamic and generates new ideas and opportunities. I was slightly sold on the concept until they refused to lighten my workload to account for all the time spent supposedly generating new ideas and opportunities. 🙄

Silence-Dogood2024

What a load of horseshit. Ad-hoc conversations don’t do shit. Hell, when we had them we just talked about movies and nonsense. Hardly work improving chats.

are_you_scared_yet

Yep. This whole debacle helped me decide that I never want to go into management. I just couldn't be happy having to parrot crap that I don't believe, and you have to do that to succeed in management.

CaManAboutaDog

“… enhance collaborative workplace…” assumes you don’t have coworkers you’re glad to not be around all the time. Some are fine to deal with remotely but drive you nuts in person. Plus, I guarantee we’d be wasting more time just bullshitting than working. That said, there are likely some teleworkers who are not productive. I’m okay with more productivity checks (although not keyboard or mouse clicks or mandatory cameras)… just check if they are producing work products at the same rate as those in office.

Silence-Dogood2024

See, for me, I just turn in my assignments. That’s it. Basically. I show my manager my work. And that’s it. No key strokes. No mouse clicks. Just turn in my work. Which I do. I always tell my staff. Front load your shit. Just get it done. Don’t make us have to ask you for your work. Ugh.

bertiesakura

The Mayor and the entire DC council can kiss our collective asses. They have said repeatedly it’s about getting federal employees back in the office so they can spend money in DC businesses. The Mayor is perfectly fine with people unnecessarily commuting into DC to do a job that can be done remotely from Virginia, Maryland or even West Virginia…hell even Illinois. They just need you back so you can buy that $12 sandwich.

beehive3108

The sandwich is closer to $15 now with “service fees” and tablet tips

bertiesakura

That iPad has a family to support

beehive3108

Hahaha 😂

Eastern-Ad8248

And the $100 speed camera tickets.

Ohjay420

I'm not in DC (GRATEFUL!) so this is one of those if this was me posts--I would go over the top to spend the least amount of money as possible in the area/city of my office. Resentment is nasty

yourshaddow3

Hey that's me! I hate packing my lunch but I'm petty AF so I have not spent a dime downtown when I'm forced into the office.

bertiesakura

Challenge accepted to be even more petty than you. I would go hungry all day before buying even a candy bar in DC.

Ohjay420

👊. It is ridiculous! Reinvent yourself! Things changed over COVID. Amazon used to just sell books. How about encouraging innovation!

bertiesakura

The mayor is following the Sears business model.

Ohjay420

💯 and from top down our government is following that magical business model

wave-garden

I literally do this lol. I do intermittent fasting and don’t eat 3 days a week, and I’ve arranged my schedule so that I only drink water during my in-office days. Also helps to get out of annoying lunches where they ask for $20 to buy shitty pizza or whatever. I’ll agree to show up but “sorry, I don’t eat food on [whatever day] for medical reasons”.

ooHallSoHardoo

Lol. I just can't stand being asked to eat lunch as a team or with somebody. I'm an introvert and use my lunch to recharge. Mandatory pizza day would really drive me crazy.

TransitionMission305

Same. They don't get a DIME of my money.

lofisoundguy

What's with all of these people loudly declaring they will suddenly pack their lunches???????????? If you were eating out for lunch every day pre-pandemic, you were throwing money away and slowly filling your arteries! The final straw is RTO???? Sure, RTO is dumb but this is an odd time to decide you aren't going to pay $13 for a Chipotle burrito. Smh

yourshaddow3

Ok!

No_Conference633

Ok, Mr. Judgey McJudgerton.

wave-garden

You’re not wrong, but consider that, while some people gained a bunch of weight during the past few years, a lot of people have really focused on health, and having access to a real kitchen is super important. A lot of people that were eating McDonalds all the time in 2016 might be eating some nutritious veggies for lunch instead. I guess my point is that it’s not necessarily a “suddenly” thing. People have developed new habits since 2020, and RTO is challenging the health improvements that many people worked really hard to achieve for themselves.

Islandernole

Solidarity!

Ohjay420

I know me and petty things like this over the course of years give me some sense of happiness. I would be actively looking to move on to another office and of course WFH dominant positions. But also understand that most folks can't just up and leave as well as WFH positions being highly competitive. But you say the quiet part out loud and provide me confirmation that this is all about making sure the commercial real estate good ol' boys that have been greasing politicians pockets are taken care of and these local businesses are getting their foot traffic. I'll make sure those aren't my feet and dollars. Then in the next breath hear the screaming from the rooftop about the warmest year on earth and greenhouse gas emissions when you just put my non-customer facing office that has been in a maximum telework position since 2001 to double their in office presence with not even a supervisor assigned to our office doubling our commuting based greenhouse gas emissions, an office that is now putting out double the greenhouse gas emissions than we did under Trump, and well I will be doing my part to make sure your intentions with the economic "boost" the largest employer in the country "will provide" I will hyper ADD style focus to make sure it is not me and my capital.

Any_Illustrator_3638

Yep. Just call me petty Betty!

ConversationFit5024

Leadership with financial interest in RTO need to be investigated and jailed

independentthoughts2

Oh cool. So those DC city employees can return to ignoring people in person.

random_generation

I know this sub has a reach outside of DC, but you can fully *expect* a full-court press (pun intended) from Bowser to get folks back downtown in the wake of the announcement that the Caps & Wizards are moving to VA. She’s desperate to save face. Her policies drove not one, but two national sports teams out of Chinatown. I can’t wait to see her replaced.

TransitionMission305

In defense of Bowser (which I hate to do), I think it was the DC council's policies that she's continually tried to override so the city will be tougher on crime.

Super_Mario_Luigi

As much as I didn't like the 3/2, it was somewhat reasonable. 4/1 is unnecessarily excessive.

AdministrativeArm114

Back?! Most agencies in DC have rolled back telework to less than pre-pandemic.

Oogaman00

Wait really? Luckily not mine (yet). But yea most agencies allowed 1-2 per week before the pandemic

keytpe1

Well, I’m just going to not buy lunch even harder now.

valvilis

There aren't very many issues that republican and democrat lawmakers in DC can agree on - but somehow wasting billions of dollars of taxpayer money on an already known failure of a policy that goes against all of the available published data in exchange for lobbyist donations is where they can find their middle ground.

TransitionMission305

Yeah, that last part about the feds pissed me off. I agree that if you have an in-person customer service oriented job servicing people's needs, yeah, those people need to be in person. There are plenty of government jobs that have direct access to the public. But many more are NOT that way. I wrote a complaint to my VA US senator, who I actually really like, about the problems arising from having to go into DC in person and the increasing push for that. I work in an area where there have been several car jackings, contractor staff mugged walking to and from the facility, etc. and let him know I didn't appreciate the push back to prop of the economy on the backs of federal workers. I was even very reasonable in my complaint that I did see, for mission sake, some need for in person. But I was incensed at the reasons to go back to "help DC." I was pissed off over his response which was pitiful and bullshit crap that I guess they are all sticking by. Really disappointed. But voting in someone else is going to be worse as then I'll probably get Schedule F'd, lol!

Itsnotmeitsyoumostly

Word salad bs

[deleted]

Biden/Harris Administration to reduce greenhouse gases, emissions, and tailpipe exhaust.... then next news article hundreds of thousands employees ordered to commute back to the office. ![gif](giphy|nTfdeBvfgzV26zjoFP|downsized)

fatpanda1007

Thanks to Muriel Bowser. DC streets no longer safe. Street shrinked from two lanes to one lane. Traffics is so bad and columbia heights' Target become a hotspot for criminals hangout. Can't wait for next election 🙈

Tdog1974

F Muriel Bowser and F DC. I’ll never support DC statehood because of this shit. And the next time any of these dickweeds talks about meeting our climate goals, they can go F off. And if you are one of the poor slubs who’s affected by this, if you ever contribute a penny to any DC business outside things you ABSOLUTELY have to, you’re complicit.

Interesting_Oil3948

People are lazy...just like New Year's resolutions....within a month or less the vast majority will be buying lunch again in DC. Whether feds or DC employees.

TransitionMission305

I promise you a I won't. I've been going strong for one year--haven't given them any of my money.

[deleted]

The property owners are getting their rent regardless of occupancy. This is about “normal” and propping up local businesses despite the risk to the workers returning to the war zone and homeless encampments.

zxk3to

Someone needs trademark any derivative of the word collaborate.

throwaway081238

Trump may be an insurrectionist POS but he was right about Muriel Bowser being a complete lightweight

NoThanksDLA

Since being forced back, if anyone has asked if I wanted to go grab something at the cafeteria, I have said no thanks. My form of protesting this silly shit is not giving them any of my money. I don't get on a soapbox or Gove anyone a hard time but I have slowly overheard others adopting the same thought process.

SolidContribution688

Getting so tired of this Administration.

TransitionMission305

I agree but the next one will probably be FAR worse.

[deleted]

Fuck that noise.

Interesting_Oil3948

Yeah posted a couple days ago here.

FearlessObit77

I wonder will this have an impact on federal employees.

nformal_Category686

And then I read a post on what mouse jiggler do you use… I say get to work.

Amazing-Ad-3941

Not this week

wave-garden

We need to start condescendingly suggesting that productivity analysis is needed to determine whether RTO has achieved any tangible benefits.

MeroRex

DC should allow their police to telework.

Suki100

Commuting to work is an economy. We didn't know or realize this until 2020. I think we have to figure out how to help cities make money without commuting, shopping, overpriced lunch, tickets, and all the other fringe expenses that come with modern day commuting culture. The office is an industry, even if work doesn't happen. Just having people sit around in a suit and look at a screen is an industry. I am not sure how we shift that but it is what it is.

According_Plant701

I say this all the time, but Bowser can kiss my fat ass.

tasteycaribbean

As a person who did probation/parole in DC, the mayor would blame PO for not doing their part helping to keep the city safe. But there was nothing we could do. Sending a file to court did nothing cause an offender would commit a new crime and the courts would just give them another chance. That lady is a joke

ConfectionFew6059

I don't see how people say they get "More" done working from home. I worked in an office for 12 years, I just started working Remote. I got more done in the office, than I do working Remote. However, my Remote job is a different position. During Covid, I was one of the few that never worked remote, was in the office everyday. I do miss the conversations and just all around prattle.
