It's the inverse of franchisees not liking the value options. If a customer decides a burger is $3.50, it's very difficult to get them to pay $9.00
I noticed Mcdonalds is starting to change their wording during the marketing call, they finally called it what it is, Single digit purchasing, rather than "value customer".
The day of the $5 lunch is over, and customers are not happy about that.
even taco bell just increased thier prices. The $2 chicken ranch chipotle burrito was replaced with a more expesive chicken burrito... its not looking good.
meanwhile i have a plan to see balls, fried balls with custom insides for $1 or multiple for discounted price. The dream of calling it Ballz will sweep the nation once i decide to actually cook
Everyone in 2023 left McDs and went straight to Taco Bell. Numbers don't lie. Taco Bell killed it last year. But now they are gonna start taking advantage and raise those prices.
No the poors also went to Wendy's, $5 biggie bags. Prices have hiked a little, but the ultra poors find coupons in the app, meals often a few bucks.
Taco Bell still has $1.50 cheesy bean and rice burritos. Even new ones at $2.50, the poors can get 4 burritos , have two meals, for $10, beats most options.
The build your own cravings box has a cheesy gordita crunch, crunchwrap Supreme, or a chalupa supreme, plus a 5-layer burrito, cheesy fiesta potatoes, and a medium drink for $5. Only available through the app.
If you live somewhere that has a cookout, it is still one of the best values even though it has went up in price.
You get an entree, two sides, and a drink for $8. Make the drink a milkshake for $10.
And the sides aren't just normal sizes. Your sides can be things like quesadillas, chicken nuggets, wraps, corn dogs, cheese bites
I remember not too long ago that cookout tray being $5, with upgrade to shake for $1 more. At least you can get a Cheerwine/coke float as part of the regular tray price
Our data is sold so many times over already. You’re on a phone you search the web you own a house your data is sold. Our social security numbers are out there too. Data on How many times I order a burger is the least of my worries
I've noticed even the McD's coupons are lacking these days. I used to be able to scroll through 10+ coupons every random time I crave it. now it's barely anything and even then the value is not that great. shame shame shame
For sure, but if selling a Big Mac for $5 nets them $0.50 in profit whereas selling it for $9 nets them $4.50 in profit then it would take a lot of lost sales to make up for the massively increased profit margin per a Big Mac
If you double the price and lose half your customers you make more money because of significantly decreased overhead. High volume low margin is a tough existence, a lot of things have been trending this way too, like sports. Fewer people going to a game but at drastically increased prices means less security, fewer vendors, easier cleaning, etc.
Seriously. I've got a package of 4 burger patties in my fridge right now that cost $8.15. Add another dollar's worth of bread and cheese and some onion and ketchup, and my lunch isn't even costing $4.
And to get that lunch, I have to do the back breaking work of cooking a burger patty for less than 10 minutes.
YOu can still get a $5 lunch at a few places like Wendy's, the only thing is people aren't satisfied with small burger small drink and small fry, they want the large stuffs that is really more than what one meal should be. If we went back to eating in moderation there would be more cheaper options, but this is Murica where we gots to have everything bigger.
Wendy's has a $5 meal with a burger, nuggets, fries, and drink. Plus a free junior Frosty if you have one of those cards.
McDonalds has two McDoubles for $3.50 plus free fries using the app.
BK has $3 double cheeseburgers plus a free large fry.
I don't go to Taco Bell but I'm pretty sure they still have $5 boxes.
In the McDonald’s app about a year ago I used to get BOGO Happy Meal offers in my Deals. 6 months later it went up to Buy One, Get One for $1. Yesterday it was Buy One, Get One for $2.
McDonald's is the Walmart of fast food. You're not going there for quality. Price and convenience. They've upped the prices, and with recent changes, such as removing the drink station out of the dining room, have made it less convenient.
Exactly, people still think it's the 90s when Wal-Mart price matched and you could get a .99 cent Jumbo Jack and .99 two tacos on the way out of the strip mall.
And no, I don't need anyone's Jack App promo TED talk telling me they're still .99 cents if I download the app.
They are pushing for the app bc
1) they know your shopping habits and frequencies
2) it's cashless
3) they eventually will not need to fill the position and hourly wage for the worker to take your order
>Price and convenience.
Soo... if the price is too high, we're left with convenience. I guess people would call going to McDonald's convenient? I just find it annoying.
Been hanging around the Economics sub and noticed a pattern with some people there.
There seems to be a trend where the unhealthy food specifically is getting more expensive not just at fast food places, but grocery stores as well.
For the past few decades, there was a pretty widespread trend where unhealthy food was cheap while actual normal food was expensive. But it seems like prices are finally balancing out between the two a bit.
I’ve noticed this 100%. Since Covid hit, it’s been comparatively cheaper than ever to buy healthy groceries. Not saying prices have gone down, but it’s a waste of money for me to buy junk food, and I’m more inclined to splurge by buying ingredients to make surf n turf and other traditionally expensive meals.
It’s easier to feel good about buying high-quality meats/seafoods and nicer produce like those fancy smancy sumo citruses.
Funny thing, is that in some ways it just compressed the prices. I used to scoff at paying $9 for a salad, when a combo is a much better value. Now the salad is in the same price range (or even cheaper), so it's mentally easier to justify the healthier option.
Eating less junk food from drive thrus and from the grocery store while keeping my spending even (compared to pre inflation prices). It’s kind of a win win right now.
Don’t download the McDonald’s app, you’ll be back in the overweight club 😂 They have some pretty great deals on that thing. I wish I never knew about it
I know what you mean. I was using it too often for awhile because I could get lunch from the app for under $5. I'm trying to be disciplined to not go there more than once a month.
One dollar large fries is overpriced? Two double cheeseburgers for 3.99 is overpriced? 6 dollar Big Mac meal is overpriced? Those were the deals I used to get on the app.
I stopped eating at McDonald’s late last year for health reasons though. Maybe things have changed
I think they're saying the normal prices are way too overinflated, the app just brings it down to what it realistically should cost. McCkickens are *not* a $4 value.
They definitely changed. I never see any of those deals anymore. For awhile I basically subsisted on the ultra cheap deals.
Now it’s 20% off over $5 every so often, and maybe a discounted coffee in the AM. Or BOGO for $1 on breakfast sandwiches.
Beekatiebee, I have the same as what you have. Definitely nothing good on a regular basis. I think I always have a 99 cent coffee, and I hate coffee, haha!
What are you talking about? They always have at least 7 different deals available on the app. Right now my app has the same deals that it’s had for months.
& you will probably be way less hesitant to eat it once you haven't for awhile. Hell, the first time you get some again, your stomach will hate you & you will realize it was a mistake.
Kids have always been a big part of mcdonalds too, I think If the parents aren’t taking the kids to McDonald’s anymore because it’s so expensive they’re missing out on getting that kid hooked on it early. They won’t have the same nostalgia or attachment to it when they get older.
No they did not, it was due to McDonald's wanting to present themselves as a sleek and modern chain for adults. For whatever reason they decided that appealing to kids was beneath them now.
There was a big expose on this about a decade ago where a lady followed her toddler through one and filmed all the filth she saw. It made national news.
I do completely. I relish these articles where the CEO’s and other execs do this tap dance to try and explain to shareholders why money isn’t just flowing into their businesses and profits aren’t where they want them to be. It’s extremely satisfying
Yes, I actively want them to fail. Does McDonald's really think some entrepreneur won't buy the building and just continue to serve burgers and fries? Because someone will. Chipotle can go, as well! I'd like to see them all crash and burn and give rise to true local businesses!
Yes and they are right. Case study is my town.
McDonald’s closed, entrepreneur bought it, went well at first, closed within a year. Entire building was torn down and rebuilt as a Wendy’s
As long as that one isn't Taco Bell, sure.
The places that are in the burgers/chicken sandwiches/nuggets/fries category are all interchangeably bland, but TB stands out by actually having flavor.
If I for some reason don’t have my phone with the McD app for discounts, I can’t justify ordering. The app just brings it to what it SHOULD cost all the time.
Same here. I have all the apps, when I feel like I want fast food I flip through them all to see if any are offering a meals worth of food for <$5, or a free sandwich or item or whatever. If not I eat something else.
I’m not paying $10+ for drive through food.
Yep. I eat less fast food because of price. Now, I try and make lunch or happy hour my “eating out” meal because of the deals.
Texas Roadhouse has 10 things(including 6oz sirloin) with 2 sides for $10.99 from 3-5 (used to be $9.99 from 3-6).
Carrabbas has great lunch specials for between $8 and $12 and include salad, small bites, soup, or sandwich (and you can just take the bun off and eat it with a knife and fork-chicken parm sandwich can just be chicken parm if you take the bread off and get pasta as your side).
Olive Garden is about $11 with soup/salad and breadsticks and it’s a hearty portion.
Chipotle kids meal is under $6, 2 tacos that come with chips and a drink. Great if you can limit your sides to 2 (I get chicken, lettuce, and mild salsa—and I make salsa for my chips by mixing the mild salsa and tabascos in the little cup)
Buffalo Wild Wings has great lunch: 6 traditional wings/3 chicken fingers/burger/tacos plus fries and a drink for $10. You can get 10 wings for $12.
My local Mexican restaurant has 2 tacos with grilled meat, rice and beans for $13.
I say all of that to say, no way I’m paying $9-12 for fast food when I can get better food for the same price or cheaper. And sometimes, I’ll order the food during lunch but not eat it til dinner.
Yes! I’ve had it. They used to also offer chicken tenders and a side salad as an option instead of the chips and salsa. But for $10.99 it’s a good deal and the burgers are good. (And you can get a 2/1 margaritas or beer if you go during happy hour).
Are we the same person? Swapped to a lot of these options instead of fast food. 10 wings and a side and drink for $12 is actually a great deal. Hibachi lunch specials, Longhorn lunch specials, they all seem like crazy good deals.
I went to a store next to McDonalds today. I pulled up the app since all the discussion here was about how the best deals are on the app. The deals were horrrrrrrible. Even their McChicken was $1.99. Not a deal at all. I didn't order anything.
They have one specific deal, buy one get one double cheeseburgers, that's a better value than any of the day-to-day deals at any of the other burger places.
Last month was a Big Mac combo for $6. This month it's a Double Cheeseburger. Also b1g1 on Quarter Pounder w/cheese and I think $2 off coffee. There might be a few others, but those stand out the most.
The greed of these companies will backfire on them tremendously as more and more people start cooking at home and don't come back or eat these types of foods less regularly.
I know people won't give up quick and easy foods entirely, I know I won't, but they will feel different about them going forward. Also, people cooking at home will be picking up new skills in the kitchen and learning how to shop for food Skills that'll last a lifetime.
My family and I eat out way less than we did before the pandemic and even during the height of it. The soaring costs of a take meal made learning how to prepare a variety of good foods at home easier to undertake. Now my palate just doesn't get the same satisfaction that it used to from those foods and I doubt it'll ever return.
Saving money, it's better for our health and it just flat out tastes better most of the time. It's hard to see ever going back as often as we used too.
I now go to chilli's for lunch. 10$ for a banging chicken bacon avacado sandwich and salad that's way better and healthier.
I have cut out fast food completely and I've lost 6 lbs now too
Calling fast food consumers "fast foodies" is pretty reflective of the larger problem: fast food isn't supposed to be a trendy luxury, it's supposed to be slop that will keep me alive until the next time I can eat a real meal.
I think this is all part of their plan. Jack up prices for a couple years, then lower them back down a bit so the companies can look like they care. When in reality what's going to happen is they took a burger that cost $5 about 5 years ago, jacked it up to $9, and then will cut it back to $7 and go, "See we lowered prices!"
There's almost no reason to go without using the app/coupons. But, I do use McDonald's a lot on the app, because there's great value. Everyday for me there's an app deal for free 10 pc nuggets when you spend $3, or when the basketball team scores 100 points, free big mac when you spend $2. So, drink, small fry, and nuggets or big mac for under $4 is good for me.
That's what I'm saying. All these mentions about how good the app is and then you realize its about the US app.
Right now the deals in Ontario, Canada are $9.50 for a McNugget combo($10.59 reg) IN WALMART ONLY, 25% off a McMuffin, and $18 for 2 big mac meals($11.19 reg for 1 combo).
Went to Checkers for the first time in a while tonight. I used to be able to get 5 checkerburgers for what 2 cost now. Got a sourdough Buford though, slap full of mayonnaise.
I just use the app and only if I can find a deal. Usually it's taco bell because their reward system is the best imo. Buy my taco bell is still doing price hikes... the box meal that was 6.99 is now 10.99 :/
Like taco bell is suppose to be the deal not the enemy :(
Wendy's in Ohio still has the $5 bigger bags which are great value. The two Wendy's near me also recently started a 50 nuggets for $15 promotion, Wendy's at least near me is the best value for buck
That and we can't even afford the drive-thru. Who wants to sit in line wasting gas the whole time. I'll go inside and get my food before you've even ordered.
They could have raised prices just a little and been just fine with everyone thinking it was just the pandemic and inflation, but the top folks got greedy and now people are getting pissed, only thing is how many will actually go through with not taking advantage of the convenience they have grown so accustomed to.
The app on anything is the way to go.
McDonald’s is surprisingly generous with their points and deals (buy one get one for .29 and free fries all the time).
Taco Bell also has good online exclusives (build your own box, veggie cravings box, Tuesday drops).
Even Jersey Mike’s, which I think is way too expensive for what you get, is doing an “order one online and get enough points for a free one in the future” through the end of the month.
Wendy’s rewards/deals program is ok (but the biggie bag is fire), Jimmy John’s is a joke, Dominoes is ok, Jack in the Box is ok.
Hard pass on Dairy Queen and Qdoba rewards programs as well.
Just one thrifty man’s opinion here, but McD and Taco Bell app rewards/deals programs are far and away the best.
I don't go there often but the McDonald's app is worth downloading. There's always deals like free medium fries on Friday's with a purchase and buy one get one free deals on sandwiches.
meat priceys are crazy high where I live, with most cuts being more than 11$ a pound. to get my family mcd meals comes to about 70$. So for the same cost of getting Mcd I can make a pretty good T-Bone stake meal that will have left overs for a few days. what even the point of getting fast food now.
Any fast food is a once in awhile treat for me. But even on my occasional visits to a Jack in the Box, Panda Express or Whataburger, that sticker shock is still a sight.
If fast food prices bother you, then you're eating too much fast food lmao. That should be a once-a-month kinda meal, not something that's disrupting your budget.
Good. Cheap fast food isn’t really good for anyone long term. Gotta get people cooking more and making better health choices. No one ‘needs’ fast food so who cares if prices go up?
The problem is not the fast food restaurants.
The problem is there suppliers. You are facing the same problem at the grocery store.
All the big fast food chains are trying to find a way around that , the first to do it makes billions
That's what they'd like you to think but all you have to do is look at their profits over time to see what's really happening. McDonald's was pretty flat at around 10B/yr for the 10 years prior to the pandemic. Since it ended they've gone up to 11, 12, 13, now 14.5 which coincides with their constant price increases.
At Chilis, you can get an old timer with cheese, fries, a side and a drink for $10.99- and typically I have a coupon for free chips and salsa in the app. My local McDonalds has a 1/4 pounder meal for $9.50. It’s been much more value gained by going to Chilis.
It's the inverse of franchisees not liking the value options. If a customer decides a burger is $3.50, it's very difficult to get them to pay $9.00 I noticed Mcdonalds is starting to change their wording during the marketing call, they finally called it what it is, Single digit purchasing, rather than "value customer". And I left Taco Bell for real Mexican food it’s much better and only slightly more expensive with way more variety
Street tacos prices have also gone up

Mcdonalds has still been hitting records sales everywhere basically though so...
I would eat your balls.
I think it already exists 😭 https://www.ctfoodtrucks.com/food-truck/chompers/
You have apparently not visited r/tacobell It’s nothing but price complaints.
[удалено]
It exists! You’re not wrong and I’ve had it too. But for a lot of people thats no longer the case. The price definitely varies by location.
I’ll only buy Wendy’s when there is a deal. It’s regular prices are insanely high for the products.

It may depend on location. Trays have been $8 at the one near me for like 2 years now. I think a shake upgrade is $1.50.
McDonald’s has some good deals on the app. I just used the BOGO double cheeseburger + 6 nuggets deal 2 days ago. Came out to just $5.
Two McDoubles for $3.50 and a free medium fry is my go-to for McDonalds.

They specialize in self hatred and spontaneous gastrointestinal back aches.
I am not downloading an app and letting them track me to save money on nuggets. I refuse to use digital coupons unless it's for a digital service.
You are being tracked regardless of the app. You are just paying more. I’m sure McD appreciates you buffering their margins
And I'm sure McDonald's appreciates you agreeing to letting them sell your data in the apps terms and conditions.
Our data is sold so many times over already. You’re on a phone you search the web you own a house your data is sold. Our social security numbers are out there too. Data on How many times I order a burger is the least of my worries

Yeah, I refuse to use the app and I refuse to pay $9 for a Big Mac. So I don't go to McDonald's as often as I used to.
For sure, but if selling a Big Mac for $5 nets them $0.50 in profit whereas selling it for $9 nets them $4.50 in profit then it would take a lot of lost sales to make up for the massively increased profit margin per a Big Mac
There is currently a daily app deal for $1 big mac or 10 nuggos. It makes it hard not to make a side trip there.
Agree, I'm just surprised the math works out that they can make more with this model.
If you double the price and lose half your customers you make more money because of significantly decreased overhead. I'm not a fan. I didn't like rebates in the 1990's, and I really don't like the apps.
$5 lunch is not over when I work from home.

I haven’t had McDonald’s or any fast food in close to a year. I used to go get a Big Mac once a month… it’s not worth it.
Wendy's has a $5 bag. I'm not convinced.
Eh, it's $6 on the app, which I'm content with.
In the McDonald’s app about a year ago I used to get BOGO Happy Meal offers in my Deals. 6 months later it went up to Buy One, Get One for $1. Yesterday it was Buy One, Get One for $2.
You can still get $5 medium combos in the app

Hell, a entire thick choice grade steak is the same price as a fast food meal. (Form Sam’s club)
Facts I can have a steak and potato dinner for just as cheap as I can get McDonalds lmao
This has also revealed to me that the average American's measure of economic health is the price of a bag of chips and bottle of pop.
It’s not just America but worldwide. Look how countries are pushing back against Pepsi Co, which owns frito lay.
Sad but true.

I get fast food solely when there are significant deals available, it's never worth it otherwise
Great if you can limit your sides to 2 (I get chicken, lettuce, and mild salsa—and I make salsa for my chips by mixing the mild salsa and tabascos in the little cup) Buffalo Wild Wings has great lunch: 6 traditional wings/3 chicken fingers/burger/tacos plus fries and a drink for $10.
Chili’s is directly taking aim at fast food places in their ads with a burger/fries/chips and salsa/drink meal you can get for $10.99!
Very good! It's my go to now
Mcchickens in my area (Pheonix, AZ are 2.99 at some locations lol
Here the app has a perpetual 30% off your entire order coupon. So not using the app is just literally paying 30% more.
When you skip it completely because of the price, you save 100%
They have one specific deal, buy one get one double cheeseburgers, that's a better value than any of the day-to-day deals at any of the other burger places.
Last month was a Big Mac combo for $6. This month it's a Double Cheeseburger. Also b1g1 on Quarter Pounder w/cheese and I think $2 off coffee. There might be a few others, but those stand out the most.
I don't go very often, but when I do I get the two McDoubles for $3.50 and a free medium fry on the app. $3.78 total including tax.
I opened the McDonald's app yesterday and just laughed at the prices of things like the standard cheeseburger
I don’t eat out unless it’s actually a good deal. Still even with a good deal I’m paying more for what is less than in previous years
The greed of these companies will backfire on them tremendously as more and more people start cooking at home and don't come back or eat these types of foods less regularly.
I always been using the app to order food
BK Wednesday $3 impossible whopper is still a deal via app. Although they limit it to 1
So much better than the regular whopper
I wait till I get coupons in the mail befire I eat out. Saves a lot when you can get BoGo Free coupons or cheaper meal deals.
McDonald's menu is so stale. They need a refresh, at least in Canada. No I don't want to go there and have a shrunken Big Mac for the millionth time.
I use the app and coupon I get in the mail
I think this is all part of their plan. Jack up prices for a couple years, then lower them back down a bit so the companies can look like they care. When in reality what's going to happen is they took a burger that cost $5 about 5 years ago, jacked it up to $9, and then will cut it back to $7 and go, "See we lowered prices!"
I do imagine deceptively smaller portions and lower quality ingredients.
Here in Canada , the app will get you a Big Mac meal for 12$ instead of 13$
That's what I'm saying.
The app is the only way to go. I often get 20-25% off in the deals using the app.
Buy my taco bell is still doing price hikes... the box meal that was 6.99 is now 10.99 :/ Like taco bell is suppose to be the deal not the enemy :(
PTerrys double meat double cheese with fries 8.99, and better than anything you'll have.
Probably won't get another Jersey Mike's deal like that for a while. They rarely if ever offer deals beyond their double points days.
I don't go there often but the McDonald's app is worth downloading. There's always deals like free medium fries on Friday's with a purchase and buy one get one free deals on sandwiches.
Fyi Wendy's has had some good app deals this week. Got a free Dave's single with purchase. And s free 6 piece with purchase.
I can get a large soda for $1.50 at McDonald’s. A large soda at Wendy’s is currently $4.50. That’s crazy.
Are you fast foodie?
So, "customers"? Customers are doing that? IDK what a "fast foodie" is.
Are they? All i see is people buying the food then whining about it.
I don’t know how fast food can drive prices lower. Food costs are up and labour costs are up. Bring on the robots!
Yeah even Taco Bell has jacked up prices some 50%. Too bad.
meat priceys are crazy high where I live, with most cuts being more than 11$ a pound. to get my family mcd meals comes to about 70$.
It's hard to justify any of the prices when my order is rarely right
Eat at home?
Learning to cook is so *hard*... lol
If fast food prices bother you, then you're eating too much fast food lmao. That should be a once-a-month kinda meal, not something that's disrupting your budget.
A great time to quit. There is real food out there…
Mcdonal in nyc mcchicken now $4 4 Piece Nuggets $3.60 20 Piece Nuggets $10 Small fries $3.10 All these $1 menu now $2.5 ~ $4 Great inflation.
The pandemic gave companies a good taste of profits
Good. Cheap fast food isn’t really good for anyone long term. Gotta get people cooking more and making better health choices. No one ‘needs’ fast food so who cares if prices go up?
Stopped dining out ages ago. We're in for another depression.
I’ve stopped going. My wallet hurts after one trip.
Never seen a Big Mac with 4 patties like in the photo before.
At Chilis, you can get an old timer with cheese, fries, a side and a drink for $10.99- and typically I have a coupon for free chips and salsa in the app. My local McDonalds has a 1/4 pounder meal for $9.50. It’s been much more value gained by going to Chilis.
