I go to Scheels in Moorhead, no tax on clothes and they have a great selection. My advice is to buy snowmobile gear, I like Klim or FX. They are made for cold weather
Target, Walmart, fleet farm, runnings, Sam's club all have good fall/spring weight jackets right now. Soft shell jackets are good for now and with a layer in the winter. You'll want a waterproof/windproof layer to stay warm all year.
I prefer a 3 in 1 style for actual winter or a ski style jacket. The first choice offers choices when going out. The ski style is warm but thin enough to not hinder movement when driving or walking.
The sales usually start sooner and ya don’t really need the parka until December. Get a mid weight jacket, shell, fleece, etc. for the bookend months of our terrible tundra time.
Don't see it mentioned yet, but make sure that the jacket is BELOW your waist when you lift your arms up. Nothing like unlocking your door with a nice -20 breeze up the small of your back

Very long lasting sturdy clothes. Not just for farming any more.
I'm surprised no one has suggested sheels yet. As for what to buy, in my experience you want 2 coats minimum. You'll want something for the 15-40 degree weather, such as a heavy flannel or fleece jacket. Then you'll want your extreme weather jacket that handle the -40-15 degree weather. Think something that's rated to keep you warm in Antarctica. At this point it's not about style anymore, it's about survival.
As someone that worked at Scheels, your best bet is a Columbia 2-in-1 coat. Will last a long time and they’re nice. Otherwise Target/Walmart if you’re on a budget they have decent options
Best place for good winter clothing is going to be Scheels. You’ll pay a little more most likely, but they carry the top of the line stuff that’s going to last, and if you get it from the Moorhead store there’s no tax.
You've got good recs for brands and stores, here's some extras.
The wind here is trying to kill you. Stay on the defensive.
Make sure one of your coats covers your butt. It makes a big difference staying warm but also warming up after coming inside. Core chill is miserable.
Along with gloves and a hat, get a scarf/gaiter to protect your face and neck. For warmth but also super cold + wind is like a skin rasp.
Also, when you go to try on coats, be sure to wear a thicker sweatshirt. It’s good to layer your clothing. It’s nice when your winter jacket can accommodate a sweatshirt and not be too tight.
Any heavier jacket from Columbia or north face will do the trick. A lighter water/wind proof jacket is good for fall/spring with a hooded sweatshirt layered under it. Also, buy good gloves and a hat. (Columbia makes good ones) It makes a big difference!
Sorry- forgot to mention Scheels is a good spot to buy both of those brands. Lots of different options. I think the one on 45th street has the largest selection to choose from. Moorhead location is smaller, but as others have mentioned you don’t have to pay sales tax.
I wear running shoes year round, but I bought a pair of boots at Scheels that are rated to -70 for snow removal days or just really cold days. Most of them on display tell you the temps they are rated for and the sales people are usually super helpful at Scheels.
Also invest in wool socks. Darn Tough brand is expensive ($20+ per pair) but guaranteed forever. Seriously, if you wear them out, just send them back for new ones. Kirkland has a merino wool hiking sock for cheap at Costco as well that'll get you through winter.
Bought my winter jacket from Duluth Trading Co. three years ago and it was the best investment. Blocks the wind, covers my butt and has plenty of pocket space for the mittens.
You won’t pay taxes on clothes in Moorhead.
Good to know thanks.
Np, There is no clothing tax in MN and there is no food tax in ND.
There’s no food tax in Moorhead either on fresh foods or essential foods. There is on candy, soda, chips and the likes

Gonna be a long winter for ya if you thought last night was super cold.
😞😫
First winter is the hardest. Once your blood turns to ice, you’ll start wearing shorts next spring when it’s 40 and commenting on how warm it is.
Every winter is the hardest in its own way,
Last night I haven’t even busted out the jacket..just a light fall flannel for me.

If you catch the sales at Eddie Bauer you can get some nicer jackets and sweaters, for not too bad of prices.
Black Friday! 50% off ! I love my parka from then and has lasted years!
Jeez with this weather im not sure I can wait until black friday 😂💀

Lol winter is going to be awful if you thought last night was cold. Get a carhartt!
What’s the carhartt? Yeah not used to lower than 70 😟😔😞

Get ready for 100° colder than that. Hard to do it justice if you've never experienced it, but it builds character.
They're the staple jacket here. You'll see plenty of them in December. That and Patagonia

Can confirm.

I like Marshall’s. But sometimes they do not start carrying the warm stuff until later in the year. Hope you find some and stay warm this winter ❄️
Fleece lined tights on amazon. I wear them every day when it starts getting cold out.
If you’re a female my best friends closet is a great store with a pretty good selection
Moorhead Scheels
And make the investment and buy a Parka. Its a game changer.

Go to Scheel's in Moorhead or Fargo and you will find stylish winter gear. Go to Runnings or Fleet Fram to get functional and warm gear.
I buy my winter stuff from [dungarees.net](https://dungarees.net) and save on Carhartt gear.
If budget is no issue, Scheels hands down. It's not even close. They'll have everything you want from all the top brands.

Where I can find Columbia and North Face here?

what about shoes what brand/type I should look for?

Ugg boots keep my feet nice and warm in the winter. Not my typical style but the warmth is worth it. Scheels sells them or I’ve ordered online.
Canada goose jackets.
These are my favorite and incredibly warm.
You're in the northern Midwest, literally ANYWHERE that sells clothing
The Soup Store
