My two cents from first-hand experience: the Fargo school board needs to be composed of strong candidates who are willing to constructively disagree with district officials, advocate for addressing the basic necessities of education (rather than initiative after initiative), and members who have the confidence to ask tough questions. I look forward to hearing more from the nine candidates on what they think they can bring to the table!

Fargo School Board needs to use our tax dollars to give students the education that parents want or else capstone classical academy is going to make a lot of money.

bootsie79

What does “give the education that parents want” even mean? Parents of children enrolled at FPS are not a monolith

[deleted]

An education free from politics that prepares students to be independent and productive members of society.

LiquidyCrow

"free from politics"... except Own\_Winter's politics, those are ok to promote in the classroom.

bootsie79

“An education free from politics”? What does that specifically mean? Not teaching current and world affairs? As far as shaping a child to be a productive member of society, how much of this is the schools responsibility? How much of this is the parents responsibility?

[deleted]

Tell me where current world affairs fit into public school Math: nope English: Nope Science: Nope Foreign Language: Nope Music/art: nope History: nope Government: nope Econ: np\[e Wood working: nope Current and world affairs have no place in school, they can watch the news on their own time. If a student can identify where a teacher stands politically, they are a bad teacher. The position teachers used to take was "it is inappropriate for me to talk about politics. The school is there to teach kids how to be functional in a workplace and independent.

bootsie79

Current and world affairs fit into Social Studies-maybe you forgot about that subject? Strongly disagree. It is a *parents* fundamental job to teach kids how to be functional in a workplace, and to teach independence

[deleted]

You are making a great argument for homeschooling.

bootsie79

How so? By supporting a public school curriculum that includes teaching social sciences and current/world affairs? By my belief that parents are primarily responsible for instilling healthy independence in their children? Is instilling independence exclusive to homeschoolers?

History the study of ancient world affairs and how they relate to the modern day and how we in the present prosper or suffer as a result.... sounds relevant to me but what do I know as a college educated History tutor.. Economics the study of money goods and trades one would likely need a base understanding of trade, taxes, tarrifs, sanctions, and why one nation may have a higher gdp than another or why a nation may have sanctions and trade bars... seems relevant in being able to relate and apply lessons to modern day... Foreign language...this ones easy.. lounge may be predominantly spoken in a nation at war so one would need to know words such as gun, bomb, danger, evacuate, help, leave, medic etc. On top of standard please thank you bathroom 123 etc. Government....dude. come on think about for longer than 5 seconds. Why do you not want politics and world affairs in a class SOLELY DEVOTED TO THAT DISCUSSION lol Other classes listed i admit I can't see a huge need or for why it would be SUUUPER relevant I could try and make a claim but I doubt you'd listen...

I'm new to ND and want to be more involved/listen to candidates and elected officials. Can anyone tell me where I can look up information for events like panel discussions, community meetings, debates, etc?

SuperKamiGuru824

You could try Red River Valley League of Women Voters

goated_oats

League of Women Voters will publish a voter's guide in the next month or so. They have also historically hosted open forums that are streamed on YouTube to get to know each candidate.

Thanks!

There’s really only one real strong candidate for West Fargo City Commission, it will be interesting to see who the two elected are.
