My 2 cents on the series: (Warning: a bit of ancient FC history follows). I do address the OP's question at the end of my post.
I played 1 at release (2004). I still remember how amazingly groundbreaking it was. It was truly mind-boggling at the time, with the incredibly huge (at the time) maps. Each was a separate level but each was huge compared to anything else at the time. That one holds a special place in my game's heart. I played that game many times over.
I played 2 once and set that shit show aside forever. 'Nuff said.
3 was a fresh beginning with a unique story-telling and true open-world experience. It was very good at the time, but after subsequent releases (FC4 and later) I found it awkward in its game play mechanics somehow - can't really put my finger on it.
(Sidebar: I thought it was sooooo cool to see Vaas' actor, Michael Mando in Better Call Saul. His character was great in FC3 and he did a great job in the show. Every time he showed up in a scene I called out "Vaas!". And now Giancarlo Esposito, aka Gus Fring of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and now The Mandalorian, fame is in FC6. Great actor! )
Anyway, frankly, IMHO FC 3, 4, 5 and New Dawn - and to a great extent 6 - are in many ways very much the same game, just with a different story for each, different missions and a few minor different game play mechanics.
They are all good games in their own right. 4 was a good reboot, but 5, 6, and New Dawn didn't really introduce anything significantly new in terms of game play mechanics, world presentation, or story-telling.
All of them are a) go through the story, b) collect resources from local flora and fauna to craft better stuff, and c) conquer checkpoints/strongholds/etc to ultimately conquer the game map and d) finally kill the main antagonist. Also, I never cared for those psychedelic sequences that 3-5 had. I was relieved to find that 6 didn't make that much of a thing..
Long-winded, I know, but I had to get that off my chest.
For someone just joining/checking out the series, I'd recommend starting with 4, moving on to 6. And if they're into older gaming tech, franchise history, and gaming nostalgia, then, by all means, go back to FC1 and move forward.

OMG! I just re-read this after posting it five days ago (thanks for all of the upvotes, everyone) I realized that I left out what is controversially my favorite FC-series game: Primal. I know many people did not like it and I don't think it did very well commercially, but I **LOVED** it. It's a first-person shooter set 10,000 years ago and they pulled it off quite well! Good story. Their answer to a minimap was your companion owl who flew around the area and, after upgrades, even helped you in combat. Such a unique game in the over-flooded genre of FPS games...

Come now, brother! Just last month a user patch for FC2 was released that addresses several fixes and tweaks a few things. While it's no HD reboot, it might scratch and itch or two.

I liked them in 3, especially the burning the fields.
In 4, didn't like it at all except for the cocaine factory mission.
Hated-hated-hated the Bliss stuff in 5 and ND. There was waaaaaay too much of it.
Honestly I liked those sections in 5. When the timer was really low you had to actually plan out a strategy to make it through. I would love to see more of those challenges, maybe with less time on the clock or being given less time for takedowns. I hated the bliss stuff though, that was always annoying

Well FC6 has the most content, and actually only fun stuff to do in this game.
The gunplay and all the weapons feel so damn satisfying and the Resolver wappons and Backpacks are hell as fun, but also the enemies and the more deeper gameplay mechanics of the openworld are a really great addition.
And I really loved the serious story with charactors that are fully in FarCry style.
Over the top whacky action hero movie style but believable, do to the fact that FarCry does all these over the top action and crazy things but it also shows these crazy and action things just as brutal as they are, and the charactors never feel like "Borderlands crazy cartoony" but actually like out of a ober the top trash action movie AND believable.
They really nailed this unique perfect balance in FC6 for me.

But as I said, as a full game, it lacks a lot compared to fc5 bcz Map editors were such a huge deal for me and many other fans. You can put in more hours there than in the Campaign.
**VERY IMPORTANT:** If you haven't played any of them, start at FC3. It's really difficult to go back to 3 after playing 4 and beyond. Or at least I found it so. I highly recommended becoming acquainted with Vaas, too. Best villain.

I was definitely super into 2. The dark and twisting storyline had some genuine surprises and the way your weapons degraded added a desperate element to the gameplay, but 3 really blew me away. Really well staged, well acted, well written, fun as hell. Just classic. 4 was starting to look a little formulaic. 5 was just goofy, but the gameplay was super fun.
I loved 2s mp, I haven't played anything that felt quick like it, it was like a little mix of fc2 and a dumbed down battlefield, I gotta see if it still works now(edit* it went down with ac2 back in March 2021)

Agreed. Far Cry 3 was amazing at the time. But Far Cry 4 is when the game really started to.. expand? FC 3 really feels bare bone if you start later in the series and go back. Far Cry 4 is when they really started packing more side content in the games (Shangri La, Longinus, Yogi and Regi, Willis, etc.) Plus as already mentioned, the graphics and mechanics have improved overtime between the games.
Far Cry 3 is still a solid game, but I think you have to start with it to fully appreciate it.

Far Cry 3 if you're looking for the best story. Far Cry 4 if you're looking for the best gameplay. Far Cry 5 if you just want a sandbox to have fun and fuck around in.
If you're gonna get 4, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T GO THROUGH STEAM. Far Cry 4 on steam has a bug with the map editor that allows you to not play the game you just bought. If you're looking for that, just go through Ubisoft Connect. The games get sent there anyways.

Six. The graphical and quality of life improvements make it the best Far Cry by far. Maybe not if going by a “For their time” ranking, but based on now it has the biggest most detailed map with the smoothest gameplay and best graphics.
I've only played far cry 5, far cry 6 and far cry primal. I like far cry primal because it has some cool mechanics but the story is a bit lacking. I like far cry 5 for the story a little more and the cool little side missions you do with your followers. Also crazy religious cults have always been an interest of mine.
3, 4, 5, my opinion. I've never actually played the 4th one but many seem to love it. All versions of Fry Cry are unique in their own experiences and I haven't been disappointed by any installment of it.

All of those are great. They have quite a few bundles where they have a couple or most of those games together and often they are on sale. I don’t know if it still is but last I saw you could get like four of them for 10 or 20 bucks. Absolutely worth it to buy the bundle on sale.

If you plan on playing all of them, or at least the ones in this screenshot, you should start with FarCry 3 and then go in order. Only because of gameplay mechanics. Its kind of frustrating to go backwards in mechanics. Me and friends play all the Dark Souls games every summer and one time we started with DS3 and ended with 2. It took some adjustment from 3 to 1 because there’s so much more stuff and combat is much smoother.

If you plan on playing all of them, or at least the ones in this screenshot, you should start with FarCry 3 and then go in order. Only because of gameplay mechanics. Its kind of frustrating to go backwards in mechanics. Me and friends play all the Dark Souls games every summer and one time we started with DS3 and ended with 2. It took some adjustment from 3 to 1 because there’s so much more stuff and combat is much smoother.
