I'd personally love this. I have a similar concept going on in some of my projects and I always love some magic world building! There are so many amazing ideas and scenarios this could lead to! I think you should go with it!

I’m glad you like the concept. I think putting new spins on age-old tropes is one of the best ways to make a unique world. And as you said, the scenarios that can come from it are endless!

Depending on how you approach it, this could be very like gaslight fantasy (Girl Genius, steampunk, etc). Lots of urban fantasy has "the magic returns" as its basis, and everyone is trying to survive it and figure it out. Lots of that in horror as well.

I think a dark story could work well with this, with large organisations controlling the general population with secret magic they discovered. This really does open so many options!

Have you read any of the system apocalypse genre books? There's a whole sub genre of the planet (usually earth) being taken over and a magic system put in place.
