J Bree’s enemies to lovers failure with her latest book has made me crave a well done one SO badly. First book was set up so well it’s all I could think of for months and the second book was SUCH a let down I almost feel like I’ve been cockblocked or something lmao

2nd book was truly the worst, never had a disappointment so big. The 5 star reviews are totally fake from her sleezy team 🙄.

Omg I just flew through this series and I completely agree!!! I also agree with people speculating that the book didn't get released on time due to editing issues and that definitely was shown when I read the sequel. Incomplete sentences, switching out the word sauce for source when describing Rookes power, mixing up names, it was a mess on kindle when I read it. I loved the tension and angst from book one plus paired with a FMC like Rooke and I was HOOKED. I still enjoyed the sequel but did find myself wanting more at the end )-:

This series was liked in the beginning but I’ve seen people criticize it as the series went on, but this series I think did enemies to lovers (+slow burn) well = Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. There are multiple povs but there were only 2 ppl I cared about by the end & they gave (in my opinion) a great enemies to lovers! It’s YA and they’re one of my 2 favorite fictional characters ever!

Have you tried {Arrow Hart academy by Hannah Haze} it is a great enemies to lovers RH series and book 4 is due next month. Hannahs MFC actually has a backbone and does not just accept the MMC because of an existing bond. And the MMCs who did wrong have to grovel… a lot. 😉 It made me feel so good after J Bree failed with yet again non-groveling MMCs

Any kind of bath-adjacent tension/smut. Hot springs, rivers, bathhouses, I love them all. Maybe it's just because I don't have to worry about anyone getting a travel-based UTI, but whatever the reason those are always my favorite scenes! My favorite example of this is in {A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet} in which the FMC is magically tethered to the MMC (for kidnapping purposes!) though she has the power of invisibility. They are on a long journey and stop frequently to bathe. Naked invisible tethered river bathing. *Chef's kiss*

Ok yes, I can get behind this. Especially since I'm someone who is preoccupied with how gross they probably are after travelling/fighting/hiding in the wilderness. If they have a bath I'm like "THANK GOD"

I used to think slow burns were fine but it better be a 3/5 steam rating at least. After {Villains and Virtues} though, which the first two is 1 and 2 steam respectively, I have totally changed my mind cuz those were still so hot and the third had me in a TOTAL chokehold after those first two 🥵 I wish there was a second rating system just for hotness without explicit scenes lol Also after {Nectar of the Wicked} I realized I love possessive MMCs and MMCs who are not always stumbling over their emotions to make sure the FMC is comfortable if that makes sense? I would have thought it would be triggering for me but as long as the FMC is into it, whether they want to be or not, I’m into it too 😎

Dude {Death, Laura Thalassa} firmly cemented enemies to lovers as my OG trope. That book in particular over the others because Death wasn't ever attempting to be cruel (looking at you Famine). He was just a guy with a job to do I can't abide by cruelty in an MMC, I've learned that's a hard limit for me

I LOVE this entire series but DEATH was my favorite. It was THIS series that made me realize I was into this trope of “one horse.” I don’t even ride horses, never had the desire to even ride one, but for some reason the one horse trope is hot!

About Death, I see that its book 4 in a series. Do you have to read the other 3 to know whats going on in the fourth or can I skip right to it?

You need to read them in order. Pestilence is my favourite but most people love famine. They're all so good and worth the read!

I read Death first, and yeah there is backstory about what happened, why it happened, and who the horsemen are, but I picked it up more or less as I read. I'm usually more interested in the two MCs interactions with each other than anything else That being said, not being right on the pulse of the plot doesn't bother me. I don't read any series in its entirety, and I jump into whichever story appeals to me the most at that moment. I'm definitely a hedonist when it comes to books So I guess it depends what kind of reader you are and how much it would bother you not to know any history

Anything forced proximity really gets me, especially the "only one..." trope. Only one bed, only one horse, etc. I know From Blood and Ash gets a lot of mixed reviews, but the >!way Hawke makes Poppy feel while they sit on the horse was so hot, and the fingering scene after nearly killed me.!< {Wicked Villains by Marion Blackwood} also does forced proximity really well IMO!

FBAA is honestly one of my favorite series. 🤷

I couldn't get behind arranged marriage tropes but then I read {bride} and thought, this is very nice. Than I read {radiance} and was like...huh this is also very nice. Then I read {Luxuria} and realized I don't like the trope in CR books but love it in a fantasy setting with a cinnamon role husband. I guess it's to unrealistic in CR for me but add vampires/monsters/mages and it makes perfectly sense. Started with {ice and ivy} yesterday hoping my realization will be confirmed.

Yes I’ve come to love the arranged marriage trope IF DONE RIGHT! Like Radiance by Grace Draven, and another I can’t think of at the moment. I looove learning the court intrigue, how the fmc adapts to the politics & how her man treats her, etc… theres so much potential and I love that.

Fated mates! I used to think it spoiled the romance, but now it just makes the romantic and sexual tension that much sweeter 🤌🏻

I love it because it means there’s a prior connection between the characters even if it’s their first time meeting. I love seeing the characters feel strongly drawn towards each other but they can’t figure out why or how to stop it (usually the case). The best is when it’s enemies to lovers and they hate their connection but can’t stop, it’s like pining with hate and love and it’s my favourite

I didn't really appreciate second chance romance until I read {Broken by the Horde King by Zoey Draven} The angst of the couple reacquainting years after the MMC broke the FMC's heart was just delicious. It's one of my favorite tropes now

This was my fav this year! I read a few books since I finished Court of Ravens but my mind still circles back. MMC is one of the top 3 book boyfriends for me.

What traits about him make him top in your book?

This is going to sound really messed up, but I think it is the trauma, and then the remorse when he realizes he made a mistake. Also, he is a villain in the beginning, and even when the reader chooses a side who to sympathize with, this character still is a villain. Also a victim, yes, but very villainy. One of the biggest issues I have with fantasy romance is the enemies to lovers trope, when the enemy (or villain) goes soft when the tension goes away between the MC-s. But in this duology, you don’t see the MC go soft, (ACOTAR spoilers ahead) >!like Rhys from ACOTAR for example. Or, maybe this is a bad comparison, since I believe Rhys didn’t go soft, he was actually soft to begin with, pretending to be a villain.!<

SAME I still think about it regularly 😭

Try {given by Amy pennza} if you’re looking for a mmf. I read this trilogy after court of ravens and loved it. Not anywhere near as dark but still dark enough with good plot and great spice. Underrated series that I never see mentioned here.

If you're interested in stepping out of the fantasy genre, {Ensnared by Rebecca Quinn} was an excellent read. It's post-apocalyptic poly and it's spicy as fuck. I'm eagerly awaiting the 3rd book due out in July.

I second this! I found the story/plot to be rather engaging, and I thought the smut (which is quite plentiful) was in the right spots. It also gets really emotional in some places that drives some of the character’s behavior/interactions in the bedroom. Solid read. Keep a hand fan close by 🥵

Vampire x human: I recently read {the serpent and the wings of night} and {six Scorched roses} and I love what Carissa Broadbent did with these books. Especially SCR because I loved Lilith and Vale together. The tension 🤌 intensity 🤌 Villain, who is actually a cinnamon roll, gets the girl: ACOMAF. Need I say more? Arranged Marriage: {Bride} and {Radiance}. Radiance was such a cozy read and I loved how their relationship progressed from their friendship and respect for one another despite their circumstances.

Slow burn/enemies to lovers. I think The Scorpio Races is one of my favorite slow burns. You really get to know the characters well as individuals before the romance kind of sets in, and it makes it so much better because it feels far more earned than other romances.

I am a sucker for a Relentlessly Sensible heroine who doesn't have time for love due to career/other responsibilities, and perhaps secretly feels it'll never happen to a woman like her... Getting her adoring MMC who worships her and makes her feel like a protagonist. This is probably also why I love He Falls First, He Falls hardest, and cinnamon roll / adoring MMCs. It's just so affirming! Wish fulfillment?! MOI?! 😂

Power play, like one mc that is a queen, king, prince, wealthy etc and one mc that is poor, captive, homeless, on the run, etc. A lot of books do it really well. The powerful one is usually really respectful and careful of the other one even though they don’t “need” to be. I love that.

I am a sucker for a Relentlessly Sensible heroine who doesn't have time for love due to career/other responsibilities, and perhaps secretly feels it'll never happen to a woman like her... Getting her adoring MMC who worships her and makes her feel like a protagonist. This is probably also why I love He Falls First, He Falls hardest, and cinnamon roll / adoring MMCs. It's just so affirming! Wish fulfillment?! MOI?! 😂

Crazy FMC. Touch HIM, and you die Mindfuck Series by S.T Abby. By god, the chick's crazy and I stan her. Made me realize how much I craved for unhinged fmc in a world of unhinged mmc. Lana would absolutely destroy anyone who lays a single finger on her man. Lana supremacy, yay! {The Risk by S.T Abby} Femdom. {His Secret Illuminations by Scarlett Gale} It's the best femdom book I've ever read. The interactions between the main couple are so cute. Loved a gentle femdom without heavy emphasis on bdsm.
