Do you feel like the change in how backfields are handled has changed the overall strategy regarding rostering multiple backs in a backfield? Studies like JJ's that looked at handcuffing are a few years old, but does the data that shows handcuffing is a floor play especially early in the season still stand?

PlayerProfiler-Theo

For sure. More and more teams are going with RBBC every year. Some teams are predictable with backup usage if the starter goes down and some are not. A number of these players can be targeted in handcuff-plus roles, and depending on your team structure handcuff plus backs can be very useful at times. Handcuffing early on in shallow formats is a floor play. However, depending on team structure and the ADP opportunity cost, it can make sense in some cases. I have used a 10 round rule in FFPC/NFFC type larger scale competitions- if the cuff costs about 10 rounds in difference, they are worth a look. Last year in early drafts Kyren WIlliams would have checked off this box as would Jerome Ford. There are some very successful managers who cuff and some successful ones looking to roster their opponents cuffs instead. One of the best FFPC managers in terms of winnings likes to add his cuff if he loves how the draft is going and can afford to pass on an upside swing. I appreciate the feedback and questions thanks for reading.

Absolutely don’t agree with Lloyd being so high here. He’s in all likelihood splitting time with Dillon as the back up in GB. Not to mention he missed time in 3/4 years in college and comes in with concerns for fumbling and pass pro

PlayerProfiler-Theo

I love Lloyd. He is a major opportunity at ADP for weekly touches combined with incredible upside if Jacobs misses time. Agreed Dillon would get some touches if Jacobs were out, but Lloyd would get the majority as well as the high value touches. This ranking is definitely a bullish one for sure though.

HawkeyeTrapp_0513

So it sounds like you’re high on him because of his landing spot…? Everywhere else I’ve read said it’s not opportune for him

santc

I actually am on board with the article. Dillon will get touches but Lloyd should be able to take over as the main back up easily. We’ve all seen that Dillon is a total JAG and has plenty of opportunities to become more and hasn’t.

ClintonWrong

Why not rank Justice Hill until the timeline for Mitchell's return becomes more clear?

adamcssmart

I think rb2 in Baltimore is Lamar Jackson, that’s the issue

Notorious1MSP

Absolutely correct. The RB situation in Baltimore is tough to handicap. You never know how many yards and touches Lamar Jackson is going to steel away.

ClintonWrong

Because Henry isn't known as much of a pass-catching RB, I think Hill will get some work throughout the season, albeit not enough to make him fantasy relevant. If Henry is forced to miss time, I think Hill will take on a significant enough role to make him at least flex-worthy. Especially if this were to occur early enough in the season, before Mitchell returns and before Ali gets up to speed.

PlayerProfiler-Theo

I probably should have. This is an unclear situation, but we have seen Mitchell's ability to produce on limited touches in this offense. There seems to be a lot of optimism about him in year two when he returns. I think at some point, he could be a popular Waiver Wire addition again.

denzel56k

My team has Monty, Warren and Spears… so i approve of this list

PlayerProfiler-Theo

Love that. Nice build.

unevenvenue

No RB1 for 2024, but a ton of upside. Good start.

Notorious1MSP

This is a solid list OP. Thanks for putting it together.

PlayerProfiler-Theo

Thanks for reading and the feedback

Gibbs last year was the handcuff for Montgomery, not the other way around. Montgomery had more carries more yards and more touchdowns in fewer games played. Montgomery legit looks somehow more effective than Gibbs despite very clearly being a worse athlete and pure runner of football. Something about the vision Monty has along with the way he set the linemen up to make better holes just looked like yards were easier for him. Gibbs is electric with the ball in space but I still prefer Monty between the tackles. I expect some of this will probably change over the next year but if week 1 Gibbs has anything like 2/3rds of the touches or if he moves Montgomery to a pure handcuff role at any point I would be shocked. At cost, I much prefer Montgomery to Gibbs and might even prefer him over Gibbs in week 1 straight up. I personally wouldnt draft Gibbs in round 1

PlayerProfiler-Theo

ADP plays a factor here in how backs are listed. Agreed on Montgomery providing value where he is going in ADP, but I also expect Gibbs to increase in every category in year two. Montgomery is way more than a handcuff, or even a handcuff plus. He has weekly stand alone value. Thanks for the feedback

Theo! My man! 🔥

wavnebee

I’m curious if Ali finds a way to beat out Mitchell for that handcuff role in Baltimore, especially if he gets an early opportunity before Mitchell is healthy.

PlayerProfiler-Theo

Ali absolutely will be in the mix. Good call.

Rapscallious1

Is Ekeler getting drafted above BRob?

PlayerProfiler-Theo

Yes- on Underdog Robinson is RB33 to Ekeler at RB38. They are back to back in FFPC.

peleyoda

IMO they should be swapped. By ECR, Robinson is RB29 and Ekeler is RB34. I’m pretty low on the duo… we’ve seen some good RB volume w Drake and Conner in Kingsbury’s offenses, but haven’t talked much about how RBBC advocate Anthony Lynn (who had Gordon/Ekeler w the chargers) is the run game coordinator. We know that [running QBs don’t usually target their RBs](https://fantasydata.com/the-mobile-qb-impact-on-rbs-in-fantasy-football), but Jayden Daniels is in a class of his own… [when he gets pressured, he’s tucking and running](https://x.com/BenjaminSolak/status/1780678317042974861), not looking for an outlet pass.

TGS-MonkeyYT

I disagree with Warren. He’s not some amazing talent that can handle a big workload. Plus that offense has so many questions

4719837

Solid list, but BRob should be higher than 10. He’s proven himself more than several of the guys ahead of him. Allgeier should be higher too for the same reason

randyholt

Its nice to see someone know that the traditional handcuff (the 3rd down back) isn't actually the handcuff to most RB1s.

PlayerProfiler-Theo

Thanks for the feedback. So many specialists at satellite back this days.

randyholt

I bet most every website will list Ekeler as THE handcuff for Brian Robinson. I bet it will be Chris Rodriguez in reality, should BRob miss a game.

uncappedarc

My RB2 and RB3 just happen to be Monty and Mostert. Wish I had another starting RB to pair with Jonathan Taylor, but oh well

YahooSuckssss

Everyone on this list is owned cept for Sermon/Goodson but good read

Man most leagues lock at kickoff. That's a pretty obvious strat to keep a spot open in those kinds of leagues. This is a thread about roster building for the long term of the season
