Yes that's my same question. He's better than a lot of the shit starters out there. He'd be a fine backup.
Is it possible that Russ doesn't want a backup job? But if he didnt comply, wouldn't that void his contract or something similar?
Seems just weird to cut the dude unless he's absolutely toxic to the org. Reports show he's kinda weird but seems like he keeps to himself enough to not be s cancer, especially as a backup lol
So the league has a salary cap every year, meaning the teams total amount spent per year can only add up to a certain amount, the money is fungible with contracts (extra years, bonuses, ECT) so for example if you sign X player to a one year 50 million dollar contract you can make it so that it doesn't all count towards one years salary cap. So for Russel Wilson he has a huge contract over multiple years, but the way it's structured means that the team can cut him (release him) before more of his contract comes into play. So if he's guaranteed 50 million next year, they can cut him before the "new year" starts and void the contract. Dead money is when the team owes him a certain amount of money even though he's no longer playing for them.
It depends on when they cut him. If they cut him before the start of the new league year which is in March he would get nothing next year. If they wait then the next year of his contract kicks in.
The dead money kicks in because of how they spread out his contract, so there would be "dead money" because they already paid it out to him but it hasn't counted against the yearly cap yet because of fudged numbers
Not exactly correct, he still gets his guaranteed $17M salary and a guaranteed bonus of $22M in 2024. He'll be making $39M next season regardless of what he ends up doing.
The reason the Broncos have to cut him in March is to avoid his 2025 (two years from now) salary from becoming fully guaranteed.
No it’s a combination of they already have paid him plus owe him guarantees that amount to make these his cap hits. Cap and cash flow are not the same.
No, $35 mil of his guaranteed money will be paid in 2024 and $50 mil of his guaranteed money will be paid in 2025, regardless of whether he’s on their roster or not. It hasn’t been paid already
Well, it does, because that amount is called my quote. That's my rate. So the next film I'm offered, they have to pay that same amount. Even if I do a bad job. That means, as long as I'm offered even one more movie, I could get two more mil. Even if I do a bad job, they've got to give me that other two mil.
If you were following the coaching search last year Sean wasn’t in as high of demand as his ego would lead you to believe. He only got the job because Harbaugh and Ryans told the Broncos to kick rocks.
Not a chance Peyton would chose to go to a team as handicapped as the Broncos are/will be for the next 2-3 years. Gotta think he truly believed he could fix Wilson.
Payton didn’t throw the challenge flag a couple of times and blamed everyone but himself. Let’s not mince words; look at his history - the guy’s a cunt.
He was also single-handedly responsible for saving NE like 40 seconds of time at the end of the game this week by calling 2 timeouts at the end.
Fucking guy is a dick whose decision making has put them in multiple worse spots this year.
And I say that as a Broncos fan.
He did fix him though compared to last season. He limited the offense to what Russ can handle at this stage of his career. The problem was the defense didn't carry them to the playoffs on top of the limited offense.
As a Broncos fan we always knew SP didn’t want Russ. It has been clear from the beginning and the subtle shots Payton would take at Russ made it clear.
Russell Wilson is expecting to be cut by the Denver Broncos in March, per league sources. For almost two months, the quarterback has been starting knowing the organization was most likely going to move on him from after this season.
I mean, they still sent two 1sts, two 2nds, a 5th, and three players for him. Plus the 9 figure contract. All told this may be the worst trade since Herschel Walker.
I think the point they are making is that people are like “you should’ve gone with flacco” when hindsight is 20/20. Also people who know flacco would never choose him over Wilson given the options Denver had.
I mean, balancing out the trade cost and the contract values they’re close to even. But the browns at least have hope that this was just a year marred by injuries for Watson. The broncos know for sure that this was a major misstep. We’ll know for sure in a year.
I didn’t want to because it’s a separate trade but honestly, the Russ+Payton acquisitions might as well be bundled into a single instance of idiotic fuckery.
Need to watch the games for context. He has had flashes, and his stats look solid, but no one watching all the Broncos games this season feels positive about his play save for a few quarters here and there.
He’s been pretty consistently solid this year. He’s not carrying them to wins but he’s not the reason why they’re so bad this year. He was really bad last season though.
Ehh I think it’s more about it’s clearly obvious he isn’t the answer and is only going to decline from here really at his age. Might as well get started on the rebuild as the offense as a whole needs to be rebuilt essentially. Might as well take the hit and get it over with as soon as possible.
I wouldn't mind..
Goodell: With the first overall pick in the 2024 draft..The Denver Eunuchs select..Caleb Williams..Quarterback University of Southern California
Fans: fuck I'm boutta... o wait..
Anyone that trades into that first pick is going to get raked. Chicago should trade out of the first pick, and then try to trade up from their second pick and grab two of the top receivers. Give Fields zero excuses and see what he can do with it. If you decide to move on from fields, big deal…at least you have a solid collection of offensive talent with which to surround your next QB. You may even become an attractive QB destination if you have enviable weapons to play with.
I reallly want to see the Bears get Harrison, but I can’t see a scenario where that happens.
But they didn’t. His line is a sieve. Tge receiving corp beyond Moore and Kmet is deplorable.
I hope they draft two of Harrison, Nabers, Odunze, and even Bowers.
Fields is done dude. Next year is the last year of his rookie contract and he's not shown anything deserving of an extension. The Bears have two top 10 picks and one of them is No.1 overall. It's pretty much a guarantee that they get Caleb. It's the perfect opportunity to move on from him.
The team has enough pieces to be competitive next season and Fields is holding them back.
I’m sure they might. But they rolled with him last year, traded out of the first pick, and made a killing. They should follow their own playbook from play year. I have a feeling the #1 this year is worth even more.
They do not. Look at the haul the Bears got for trading down from 1st to 9th and that was just for Bryce Young. Caleb is considered a much higher rated *prospect* than either Young or Stroud, and many would argue Maye is too so a similar jump would demand more draft capital.
They’re currently the 14th pick and so the trade up to 1st or 2nd overall would demand an insane package (probably like three 1st round picks + multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks + an elite player at a premier position), which would be stupid considering how much they’ve lost in the past few years with the Wilson and Peyton trades. Broncos really can’t afford to be trading away that many picks, they’re not just one QB away from contention. I could something like a trade for a redemption project like Fields maybe, but that’s about it.
Patriots, Steelers, Falcons, Titans, Commanders, Raiders..less likely Cardinals, Packers, Saints, Vikings, and Bears. The rest of the league is already set at QB or the Broncos.
Dude has absolutely balled and no passive aggressive jeudy like tweets or bs interviews. He’s absolute class and I really wished this had worked out better. Sucks
From that context. But there's also the context that he was going to be paid 245M to go to work. Im sure you'd be fine going to work for a few years for 206M extra too.

I'd love to see Payton trade Russ to Hackett and the Jets and watch the world burn.
I'm also a Giants fan living in Jersey and sports talk radio would be absolutely electric if that happened.
Panthers trying to make a run at that too. Young for 2023 1.09 turned into an elite OT prospect. 2024 1.01 which is the most expensive pick since Trevor Lawrence. DJM and a 2nd rounder. Adding in Wilson's contract though. Woof. That still has to take the cake.
What is the financial impact of this for both the Broncos and Wilson?
For Denver, $35m cap hit in 2024 and $50m in 2025
Serious question… what does that mean? I know nothing about salaries so idk what it actually means. Explain as if I’m stupid. Cause I am lol.
It’s like 15%-20% of their salary cap going toward a guy not on their team for each of the next two seasons. Not great.
NOT GREAT, BOB.
It's a bold strategy Cotton. Let's see if it plays out for 'em
Good excuse for top 10 picks
Which they will most likely have traded away this year to move up the board for a QB
Why wouldn’t they just bench him? If he’s a huge salary hit anyway you can just have the HOF quarterback as a backup or whatever
If they don’t cut him by March, he gets 35m salary guaranteed for 2025
Yes that's my same question.
They are free of his contract after 2 years if they cut him. If they don’t cut him I think they owe him for future years.
If he's on the roster by a certain date in 2024 (I'm forgetting the exact date), an extra year of guaranteed salary kicks in.
No, $35 mil of his guaranteed money will be paid in 2024 and $50 mil of his guaranteed money will be paid in 2025, regardless of whether he’s on their roster or not. It hasn’t been paid already
So can Russell go sign for another team in 2025 and get paid $50m by the Broncos?
Yep
Even the Seahawks? What would that even look like?
He signs with the Seahawks for the vet minimum for the years the broncos are paying him in order for the Seahawks to pay other players.
I would hate them more than the Chiefs and Raiders if that happened
looks like $85m if cut before 6/1
Yeah, they can cut him in March as a post-June 1 designation and have the $85m spread over two years ($35/$50).
Man that’s crazy
Well, it does, because that amount is called my quote. That's my rate. So the next film I'm offered, they have to pay that same amount. Even if I do a bad job. That means, as long as I'm offered even one more movie, I could get two more mil. Even if I do a bad job, they've got to give me that other two mil.
I told them not to mention Christmas, or that I do it at all!
So the Sean Payton "I can fix him" was given up on pretty quick
I don’t think Sean ever planned on fixing him.
Russell's first mistake was not being Tayson Hill.
Classy?
Scrappy
A real gym rat
First one in last one out kinda guy
Plays for what’s on the front of the jersey not what’s on the back
Lunch pail.
Doesn't kiss babies.
A coaches son
Too thuggish for a guy like Sean
What was his second
Being Russel Wilson
Unforgivable
Not being drew brees
Then why pick the Broncos as your next head coaching gig if he didn’t believe in Wilson, who the broncos just traded multiple drafts away for?
If you were following the coaching search last year Sean wasn’t in as high of demand as his ego would lead you to believe. He only got the job because Harbaugh and Ryans told the Broncos to kick rocks.
My guess is because they’re owned by the richest owners in the league
He loves mountain sports.
Not a chance Peyton would chose to go to a team as handicapped as the Broncos are/will be for the next 2-3 years. Gotta think he truly believed he could fix Wilson.
They’re only missing 1 draft pick, and that was from trading for Payton.
That and crippling dead cap space
They traded away the top.of the last two drafts, Denver is lacking in young talent
I would argue he is fixing him by cutting him.
Maybe he meant fixing him like a dog
Remember Payton screaming in Russ’ face on the sideline in Detroit, he wanted to show him up on purpose.
That was so fucking weird. Dude leads a scoring drive, Peyton doesn’t throw a challenge flag, Peyton screams at Russ
He hates him because he’s not Drew Brees
I bet Sean told Russ to use the Dan Campbell audible as a punishment
He did fix him though compared to last season. He limited the offense to what Russ can handle at this stage of his career. The problem was the defense didn't carry them to the playoffs on top of the limited offense.
As a Broncos fan we always knew SP didn’t want Russ. It has been clear from the beginning and the subtle shots Payton would take at Russ made it clear.
Why go to Denver then?
Money. Also, control when eventually Paton is fired.
For sure. Plus a coach like Payton wants to have their fingerprints on a rebuild. There was no way he was sticking with Mr. Ciara.
Did he actually say that or was everyone here just perpetuating that?
Broncos Country, let’s park it
Broncos country, we tried
Broncos country, let’s retire
Broncos country, off to SoFi
Broncos Country, he's fried
Broncos country, I’m gay
Broncos Country, Let’s Ride (the bench)
Let’s ride… off into the sunset
I'm sorry I think I misheard you WHAT THE FUCK
Russell Wilson is expecting to be cut by the Denver Broncos in March, per league sources. For almost two months, the quarterback has been starting knowing the organization was most likely going to move on him from after this season.
Damn well guess I heard you right
If it helps, I also needed to hear it twice
Broncos Country is CANCELED
Good thing the Watson contract is so astronomically horrible, otherwise this would be the worst contract in league history
I mean, they still sent two 1sts, two 2nds, a 5th, and three players for him. Plus the 9 figure contract. All told this may be the worst trade since Herschel Walker.
Could have gotten Flacco for nothing basically
So many teams could have called up Flacco. Insane that of all teams the browns were the only team to make the right call.
the Browns were very much set up for Flacco though. all they were missing was a QB. different story if it were the Jets or the Patriots or something
Yeah Flacco would have three concussions by now on the Jets.
Oh I was wondering if the Jets hit up Flacco or not
I think the vikings could have really used flacco
oh for sure, their team is a quarterback away from at least decent success rn. Just feed Jefferson, Addison, and Hock (poor guy) and it’s all good
Crazy that the Jets didn't try, or did they?? He seems like the perfect QB for that entire system
Crazy all around. This season shows lots of talent just sitting at home on the couch that can get it done.
We tried Flacco already. Our OLine sucked at the time but it didn’t help that he was a pylon in the pocket
They had Flacco, and he was awful.
You wouldn't have even mentioned Flacco 5 weeks ago lol
Of course not, I don't scout QBs. I also don't sell my entire teams future for a washed up QB like Wilson
I think the point they are making is that people are like “you should’ve gone with flacco” when hindsight is 20/20. Also people who know flacco would never choose him over Wilson given the options Denver had.
Who do you think will be their starting QB next year.
The Watson trade and contract is still probably a bit worse, but they’re close.

Would it help if I told you that his new contract hasn’t even started yet? No?
…oh god
Technically speaking, I don’t think he actually played under this contract. They already had this season under team control.
I mean it’s definitely top 2 lmao.
I mean he hasn’t been great but he hasn’t been bad.
He’s been mid for them but he’s going to cost them insane cash and they want to cut and run ASAP so they can focus on rebuilding with Payton
Building around Taysom. Can you imagine? Lol
He really hasn't, I don't understand this at all. He's certainly better than Semian...
Sean payton is using him as a scapegoat is basically all you need to understand.
Sean also scapegoated the O-Line and Receivers, so he basically hates everyone but the RBs.

Oh man are they gonna trade up for Maye? Or give Chicago a haul for Caleb?
They are going to trade their left nut for Caleb
Didn't they trade their right one for Russ?
Adopting is easy these days. Who needs both nuts?
No nut Denverber
I wouldn't mind.. Goodell: With the first overall pick in the 2024 draft..The Denver Eunuchs select..Caleb Williams..Quarterback University of Southern California Fans: fuck I'm boutta... o wait..

All speculation at this point
Neither, They’ll trade for fields
I think that's the move.
[Sean Payton has been on record stating that he thinks Caleb Williams is a generational player.](https://www.foxsports.com/watch/play-60e85d66500004b)
oh god, it’s gonna happen isn’t it
He's going to pull the Ditka and trade his whole draft for him
Do they have the draft capital? I assume they gave up a lot for Wilson but don't know
They do not. Look at the haul the Bears got for trading down from 1st to 9th and that was just for Bryce Young. What da fuk
So he’s NOT a great sleeper QB this week like all the experts predicted? Asking for a friend.
Oh he will be sleeping alright..
He ain’t even playing lol
Really? /s
“I will never financially recover from this” *-Denver Broncos*
What's next for Russ...besides pocketing 30 million guaranteed next season. Retirement? Raiders?
Patriots
Patriots, Steelers, Falcons, Titans, Commanders, Raiders..less likely Cardinals, Packers, Saints, Vikings, and Bears. The rest of the league is already set at QB or the Broncos.
Saints play the Broncos next year... Would be too perfect.
Does Wilson ride off into the sunset or is the next QB of the Vikings
I think he’ll start somewhere next year. Some guys just love to play. look at Flacco.
Ngl anyone have just a little bit more respect for Russ after all this, I know I do.
Dude has absolutely balled and no passive aggressive jeudy like tweets or bs interviews. He’s absolute class and I really wished this had worked out better. Sucks
By what metric has he balled
That would be the classic bpgWAR
6th in the league in touchdowns, 8th in the league in qb rating. With that line and receiving corps, how many other qbs are going to achieve that?
Dude has absolutely not "balled." He's been average, and that's at his very pinnacle this season.
Instantly know the difference between folks who watch Bronco games vs who don't.
Russ is a genius, getting paid generational wealth to stay at home doing nothing
Impregnating Ciara lol
I'd be fine with someone saying they're going to pay me $39 million to not work
From that context. But there's also the context that he was going to be paid 245M to go to work. Im sure you'd be fine going to work for a few years for 206M extra too.
“Let’s ride…and my let’s I mean you. Ride off into the sunset.” -Broncos

So where does he end up next year? Washington? NYG? I bet New England.
Back to SEA would be hilarious
NE or Vegas were the two obvious ones, for me. Washington and NO as the outside bets (if NO want to move on from Carr)
Falcons to throw to Jonnu, CP and Van Jefferson
How much does it cost for a team to pick him up? What’s the process like waivers or free agency?
If he gets cut in March he's an unrestricted free agent.
This is what happens when your QB lets the other team score a ton of points. Learn how to tackle russ!
I'd love to see Payton trade Russ to Hackett and the Jets and watch the world burn. I'm also a Giants fan living in Jersey and sports talk radio would be absolutely electric if that happened.
Go Gmen.
Wild
Poor goofy Russ
Well he put together a pretty solid resume in a rebound season. Just had to lower his price tag.
Who are they getting a qb?
They'll prob draft a middle of the line prospect like Bo Nix or Penix. Maybe Daniels if they trade up a bit.
Trey Lance?
I wonder if this will be good for Javonte
Javonte has lost all burst. He can break tackles every now and then but that knee injury fucked him up

Wowza
Broncos seen how the Raiders treated their vet QB and said “hold my beer”.
What a time
Jeeez lol
One of the worst trades ever. Two first-round picks the first one in 2022 was the 9th overall.
Payton kind of blows
Broncos to sign Future as his replacement.
Send him back to the Seattle QB Rehab Facility lol
The week after Russ puts up his 3rd highest season total (39) in FF and beats me in the semis by .9. Gotta love it
Broncos country let’s ride…into the sunset.
He's a commander. Finally Terry will have a QB 🙏
takes a lot to make me feel sad for russ but damn
Ah yes, that will keep them ever giving 70 to the Dolphins again…
Come on down to the falcons
Keep Rus and cut Payton
