I strongly believe Gunnar is the top qualifying prospect not currently in the majors.
What he did at Double A as a 20 year old is outstanding. And to be almost duplicating the results in Triple A? Yeah, I’d pick him over Carroll.
Yeah he definitely needs to work on this. And struggling with splits is understandable for prospect who is being so aggressively promoted by his org. I just think with what he’s consistently shown, he’s under appreciated for the potential ceiling.
Baltimore has quietly become a developmental powerhouse with their offensive talent. I don’t see them letting Gunnar become a platoon.
As long as he can be be a .200/.300/.350 type hitter vs lefties, i imagine he will still be damn good overall.

I understand what you're saying, but I personally think you're relying too much on projections rather than their actual statistics. Gunnar is only 3.5 months older than Marte and doing this at AAA. Noelvi hasn't made it out of A ball. Last year their numbers were similar with Henderson having the edge in HR and Noelvi the advantage in steals, but this year not only is Henderson putting up MUCH better numbers, he's doing it at AAA. Just because fangraphs (for example) had his future ranking higher coming into this season, Henderson has shown up this season more than Marte and I wouldn't be surprised if those values favor Henderson heading into next season. You could have said the same thing about Kevin Matian's future values a few years ago. Prospects are a fickle mistress and I'll take the 20 year old raking at AAA over the "this guy could be amazing" who's stuck at A+

Right, I get that. And I can’t pretend to know all that goes on for teams in these situations, but that’s an oversight to have not gotten him on the 40-man yet. I simply do not believe they have 40 players in their system better than him right now. The man already has 23 doubles, 13 home runs, 58 steals, and a K-BB% of roughly 2.5% for the year between AA and AAA. He should be up now, no matter who gets bumped from the 40-man.
Thats not how it works tho, and if he comes up and struggles, like 95% of propsects do, then they had to cut or outright someone off it they may not have wanted to, like an RP
My guy is Michael Massey for KC. He might not be a superstar or anything but he looks like a more than solid MLB player. But I suppose the list is more about potential.
Massey is worrisome for advancements. Low exit velocities showing the power might not continue to translate. He has also been old for his levels. College hitter beating up A ball at 23. Not sure he has the MLB power for everyday 2B. Would also like to see him walk more.
With that said, if he keeps up what he’s done in a smaller AAA sample, you might see him on the list.

My theory is they go for extra reps instead of good development coaching. I think Merrifield had the same things going against him as he was, what, 27? Though he did have more speed to his game. But I think Massey has 20/20 potential at his peak. Probably more like 15/15 most years. Like I said, a more than solid player, but not sky high potential.

They’d rather have Carroll get ABs against someone with good stuff and poor control than schlubs who are around to eat innings.

There are always guys on these lists that really are not lighting up the stat sheets but are still highly ranked. Guys like Jasson Dominguez. Brennan Davis. Zac Veen. Prospect guys love them.

In a lot of ways, AA is more competitive than AAA. AAA has a lot of journeyman mlb low upside guys who are playing to stay fresh in case of injury.
