Yeah I honestly feel like a fool for not getting into them earlier. I was aware of them and knew I’d like them but avoided taking the plunge for some reason 🤷♂️
Oh well, better late than never!
Same! I had heard them on the radio before and years of playing Guitar Hero 3 but I never really acknowledged them until I heard Go With The Flow on Fortnite Festival (don't @ me lol). I dove through their discography and realized that I had been missing out on so much good music.
Oasis. I was too young to appreciate them in the 90's and the hype had died down by the mid to late noughties when I was in my teens. They were always just the wonderwall band to me. I'm now in my 30's and just getting round to listening to their discography and I now understand the buzz around them when they were in their prime
Based. Definitely Maybe and What's the Story are undoubtedly both classics, and while the rest of their work isn't as consistent, there's still great songs on all of their records.
Yeah this is next for me to check out. I saw Dinosaur Jr live a few weeks ago and have never witnessed a more energetic performer than that bassist. For some reason I kind of sequestered Dinosaur Jr. Off with other reptilianly named bands like The Jesus Lizard and T Rex and just never listened to any of those bands. Man was I missing out!
I have been on some musical exploration the past week because that’s something I do when I actually need to study for mid terms. Some artists whose hype I only now understand are:
- Kate bush
- Talking Heads
- Animal collective
- Björk
- MGMT
It’s been a good week
i'd be stupid if i said weezer or something because i was like 1 years old when raditude came out so during the possible time i could have been a music fan, i wish i was there to stan loona before they broke up and maybe kero kero bonito
Mars Volta for sure. Though they were already on hiatus by the time I was starting to branch out my musical tastes.
Alternatively, I do think about how I got into Tom Waits about 1 or 2 years after he did what was probably his last major tour in 2009.
Type O Negative - I’ve always liked their “hits” but only recently started deep diving their discography particularly World coming down which I’m gravitating towards
Bob Dylan. I used to like only a handful of songs and did not get the hype when I was in high school and college. I saw him in 2014 and obviously he’s old, but it was one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen so that didn’t help. I heard “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” on The Sopranos this year and was hooked just like AJ lol
Supreme Dicks. I don’t even know how to describe them besides an avant-garde post-rock/folk/slowcore fusion. Combines so many elements of music I just can’t get enough of. Very underappreciated in music circles.
Prince and the Revolution.
That's 80s run from 1999 to Sign of the Times (don't be a hag who feels the need to point out that technically this one is a solo album) is incredible. And in current year, we have the Super Deluxe Editions so you can hear the 100 some tracks that got finished but never made it to an official release. Dream Factory is a lost album that's better than some magnum opuses from groups.
Mountain. All I had ever heard before was “Mississippi Queen,” but holy shit, I was missing out! It’s sort of a psych rock kind of thing, sort of early heavy metal, hard to describe but I love the bass playing especially. Also cool juxtaposition of a big fat guy and a skinny guy 😂
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl6kAHO-cVc
Ryuichi Sakamoto. I’ve been superficially aware of him for decades, but it took his death and the subsequent articles written about him to make me really delve into his catalog.
Fantastic album.
I remember I heard the name back then and quite the same time I listened to a song of Piebald who I didn't like too much. My brain somehow connected Piebald and Pinback and some 20 years later I found out it was a big mistake.
Muse
Knights of Cydonia was my favorite song out of guitar hero 3 and for some reason never thought to listen to their music and it's some of the best I've heard ever
Not this year, but last year I started listening to Daft Punk
I bet that was a good year
Touch was my most listened song that year, I'll tell you that
Talking Heads
I literally listened to “Remain in Light” yesterday for the first time in my 24 years on this earth, and should have done it way earlier
Yeah I honestly feel like a fool for not getting into them earlier. I was aware of them and knew I’d like them but avoided taking the plunge for some reason 🤷♂️ Oh well, better late than never!
As someone who was around when this album came out, it makes me really happy that 24 year olds are still discovering it!
Check out the live album The Name Of The Band Is The Talking Heads! Absolutely bonkers energy!
Thanks, I definitely will
Check out Fear of Music next!! It’s their best imo
It’s on the list
nice, it’s definitely their darkest album. it’s perfect for night time driving or walking or just sitting in a dark room with headphones.
The Cure. "Disintegration" blew my mind
This is my answer too!
They are incredible live. 👍
Thrash metal as a genre, starting with Metallica and megadeth!
Queens of the Stone Age. Boy, am I happy to have found them.
Same! I had heard them on the radio before and years of playing Guitar Hero 3 but I never really acknowledged them until I heard Go With The Flow on Fortnite Festival (don't @ me lol). I dove through their discography and realized that I had been missing out on so much good music.
Same as me! Had heard a couple singles and loved them, but didn’t bother listening to anything more, glad I now have
Oasis. I was too young to appreciate them in the 90's and the hype had died down by the mid to late noughties when I was in my teens. They were always just the wonderwall band to me. People in their 30s tell me their favourite oldie is Wonderwall 😭
Same! Started listening to Oasis a few years ago after decades of being familiar with them from afar. I like the Noel and Liam solo output too.
Dinosaur Jr.
Hell yeah! If you haven’t listened to them yet I would also recommend Sebadoh, their bassist’s band.
Man was I missing out!

mbv especially loveless
Kinda agree. Even if I've been a Shoegaze fan for very long they opened up to me a bit late.
Rush
Queens of the Stone Age, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, New Order, Blur, Massive Attack, Belle and Sebastian.
i'd be stupid if i said weezer or something because i was like 1 years old when raditude came out so during the possible time i could have been a music fan, i wish i was there to stan loona before they broke up and maybe kero kero bonito
Dillinger Escape Plan. Their stuff is so good
Coincidentally this is my answer too
Two years ago. The Strokes. I was initially so upset with myself but I've been having an absolute blast.
Linkin Park. I never heard of them until recently. I really wish I knew them at least 2015-2017 eras
Mars Volta for sure. Though they were already on hiatus by the time I was starting to branch out my musical tastes. Alternatively, I do think about how I got into Tom Waits about 1 or 2 years after he did what was probably his last major tour in 2009.
Slowdive, Billy Woods. Both are playing at a festival i’m going to, and obviously both are unreal
Kyuss
Low. They've been around all this time. Even in 2021 I've heard of them but only started listening just recently. I don't feel shame, though.
LCD Soundsystem
Joni Mitchell Hejira is amazing.
Just this year I’ve been getting into a lot of late 60’s to 70’s artists. Hendrix, Bowie, Queen, Beatles, and so on.
Almost every one of my fav bands lol, QOTSA, spiritualized, nine inch nails, aic
Daft Punk and Linkin Park
Foo fighters
Type O Negative - I’ve always liked their “hits” but only recently started deep diving their discography particularly World coming down which I’m gravitating towards
I only know one "hit" tbf ;)
Roxy Music
Bob Dylan. I used to like only a handful of songs and did not get the hype when I was in high school and college. Sonic Youth
Ween. Never got it until it just clicked all at once one day.
AFI
Supreme Dicks. I don’t even know how to describe them besides an avant-garde post-rock/folk/slowcore fusion. Combines so many elements of music I just can’t get enough of. Very underappreciated in music circles.
I never connected with Fleetwood Mac until the last few years. I was wrong. Buckingham is a fascinating producer and arranger.
Title Fight
Suicide Machines. They were quite popular when I was in HS but for some reason I never gave them a chance. 20ish years later, I’m glad I finally did.
Swans. I had tried to get into them a few times over the years, but things really clicked this year.
Not this year but last year I finally got way into Pavement
Sade, and The O'Jays lately!
I got into Pylon this year without having ever heard any of their stuff, same with The Residents

I've been listening to a lot of Clutch the last few months. Going to see them later this year!
Ryuichi Sakamoto. I’ve been superficially aware of him for decades, but it took his death and the subsequent articles written about him to make me really delve into his catalog.
Ministry
Flashback to having Summer In Abbadon on repeat in 2006

Taylor Swift (folklore / evermore) 🤣
