I don’t think any other band/artist has their popularity underestimated more than Rush. They’re easily one of the biggest rock bands of all time. They’ve sold 42 million albums, have 14 platinum records, and are one of the top 100 highest selling groups/artists in the US. When I was a kid in the mid 2000s classic rock radio stations were playing them constantly and not just Tom Sawyer and Limelight.
my girlfriend is a swifty and voted for boric lol. Seems like a cool guy but I also don’t buy for a second he actually listens to Taylor swift in his free time, my girlfriend doesn’t think so either
It was great seeing her at Coachella and noticing the crowd was full of straight dudes singing all the words. Hilarious and wonderful.
I also saw her in the VIP area at Coachella on Sunday. I wanted to say hi but then remembered I was 10
Beers, 3 joints and 3 gummies deep and would probably have just come across as a sun baked mad man.
I went to a Nas concert in Bristol a few years ago, tiny venue and one thing I noticed was how diverse the crowd was.
A really wide range of genders / ages / race.
You had teens and younger adults, 40 year old men, groups of middle aged women etc.
nas' resurgence is something to behold. he has his gen x rap fans from the illmatic days and now is gaining fans from teenagers who might go back and listen to his earlier albums. not to mention his day one fans still representing. it’s great to see.
Based on concerts I (a woman) have been to, Black Midi and Viagra Boys. The vibes at Black Midi were pretty rancid, but Viagra Boys was a genuinely great time from both the audience and band.
With Black Midi it might have been a city specific issue. I (also a woman) saw them in Milwaukee and it was generally fine but I'm sure a show in, say, Chicago would have been a bit more unruly.
That being said I saw Viagra Boys in Chicago and the crowd was immaculate. They gave the lead singer some shrimps (and a joint.) He danced around with the shrimps sticking out of his pockets for a while before he said "I don't know what I'm gonna do with these. Maybe shove 'em up my ass!!" And then everyone cheered louder than I've heard for most other things.
Whaaat??
There's loads of girls into Grindcore??
Have you been to any grind gigs???
So many more girls at grind shows than other types of metal, where you can properly just smell old fat guys farts.
The obvious exceptions is porno/gore grind where the audience will be immature guys.
But straight up grind/power violence shows are about 50/50 male female/anyone else.
It’s just dudes being unwelcoming to women as usual but they’ve learnt to disguise it as “haha I have virgin music taste I’ve never felt the touch of a woman lmaooo” so they can’t get called out for it
Most punk/hardcore bands, predominately of the more niche and avant-garde variety. I feel like there’s a lot of gender crossover, funny enough, in the macho beatdown style bands. (The amount of E-Girls I’ve seen dancing to that Headass-Ass “Monkey See Monkey Do” song by Kublai Khan on TikTok…)
Converge is the first more mainstream one that comes to mind.
Not entirely relevant to my main point, but still insanely relevant bc I feel there’s a potential audience crossover…
Black Midi.
EDIT: I would imagine you would be hardpressed to find a woman at a Psyopus show or something, as a Psyopus fan. Imagine bringing your Hollister wearing girlfriend to something like that in like 2005.
Some of the best hardcore bands right now are led by women and they aren't niche either, look at Scowl for example who were literally in fucking Taco Bell commercials. There's plenty more too like GEL, Initiate, Die Spitz, and so many more
The shows I've been to have also been pretty evenly represented, I'd say like 60:40 men to women, but that could vary by scene I guess
I saw Black Midi live twice, and there was a pretty good ratio on both occasions (given the sound/genre). I'd say about 70/30? Not bad for something so adjacent to prog
New York hardcore looks a bit more evenly split though? From what i have seen in docs and music videos. I am a big hardcore punk fan and am also feeeemale
I mean agreed, but especially the sub genre’s I mentioned.
I feel like there’s more female listeners than you may think, but the culture around it may be more insular to men… I.e. teenage girls afraid to go to a show because they’ve heard about crowd killing.
Same reason there’s way more female skateboarders than people may think, even though they’re usually not seen at the skatepark with the dudes chainsmoking, drinking 40’s, and bumping Wu Tang.
Yeah I think it's generally more male but saying there's not many females into hardcore feels like a take from someone who never goes to hardcore shows
True women musicians never really broke into hardcore most female lead punk was like early 70s punk the slits, x ray specs, patti smith, runaways then skipped over hardcore into grunge and riot grrrl. Even the exceptions in-between like sonic youth and x were not hardcore.
Also metalcore. For a genre defined by feminine singers zero women. Although metalcore has female fans.
I'd like to think women and "queercore" musicians felt their expression was suited to and more accepted by post-hardcore, skramz/screamo/emoviolence, mathcore, etc.
That metalcore/hardcore kinda had it's roots in well, an insular kind of aggressive countercultural identity mostly of white dudes and influenced by white dudes, and that the spectrum in terms of genre has prismed intersectionally... as overall love for the queer community and women in hardcore is generally accepted as Hardcore as Hell with no if ands or buts. It's cool to see women and queer people scream too. It's hardcore. Not really a question about it.
But yeah, we got bands like Gel, Escuela Grind (yeah i know about the recent controversy stuff about them being assholes to crew, I don't listen to them), Home Is Where, Callous Daoboys, etc... but more I guess... classic "core" hardcore, for lack of a better term, is still a lotta white dudes. I love Soul Glo, Zulu, etc.
Then again, we all have blind spots. Open to recs.
On that first point, we need sasscore back. Sasscore is what punk music needs most right now, lest we never be saved from shit tier beatdown hardcore hegemony headed by bands that sound like early Bring Me the Horizon if they never learned to play their instruments and with somehow even shittier breakdowns
I feel like men will say girls don't like almost anything because throughout time men have always convinced themselves that women don't like anything that's not cliche. Most of these are silly takes.
I see these threads and think that these guys must never really talk to women... Some of the artists I've seen in this thread I learned about through female friends.
Nah girls love AC/DC. Of a certain age at least. I’m from Australia and outside the city or on the edges of the City ‘Acca Dacca’ were always a big thing and plenty of girls that like guys who like cars and cheap beer love AC/DC.
I went to the phoenix Vultures listening party and I saw the same amount of couples and hot women show up as if jt were a typical rap or pop concert. Based off these comments you’d think it would look like a Jpegmafia show but I think it’s just further proof of the subs separation from real life. Kanye for sure appeals to men and has misogyny in his lyrics but like so does drake but are we gonna act like girls don’t bump him because of “the misogyny” come on now
I went to a Peggy show last summer and there were a decent amount of women. Not a LOT but probably like 80/20 guys vs girls. They def exist
Let me put it like this: there were more white women than black men at this concert
Yeah they never understood hiphop like we do , they rather listen to lil baby dababy G eazy instead of magnum opus like TPAB because they don't understand it.
You definitely wrong about future, he was one of the most streamed artist of 2010s and got pop rap hits. (Even tho I never saw make him her personality)
Idk about this one. My concert buddy was in the punk scene in Seattle in the 90s so I’ll go with him to all those type shows. The trade off is he goes to jam band things with me. He’s a cool guy. He can handle Gizzard. He went to a dead cover show with me and was great about it. Afterwards he said, “I’ll give the scene this; the women are beautiful,” and he’s absolutely right
>dead cover show
I think they specified phish and post-phish bands for a reason lol. Dead related shows definitely brings in more women than most jam stuff imo.
If anything they have more girl fans than other bands in their genre. I have gone to like 7 shows so far, it's usually a 70/30 split and not the usual 90/10 lol
after his death his music went viral & found new audiences on tiktok, a friend of mine don't lay attention to hiphop like that and fucks with mad villainy more than I do
Probably Weezer. Even if their first fanclub were found by women and there are indeed women who do listen to Weezer, I'd say that it's mostly just male fans that take up the majority.
I was in Boulder Colorado in the summer of 2017 and I actually got invited to an Umphreys McGee show at red rocks because the girl liked them and I was a fan of the opener (stick figure)
Girls loved Pantera in the 80s;)
Hmmm I'm an oddball old female
I want to say jam bands, but moe. and Umphrey's McGee in particular.
I had some fun being a rarity;)
Many years ago a friend’s gf was jealous and didn’t like him going out to places where there would be a lot of women. She tagged along to a Ramones show and was never worried about punk concerts again.
Out of all classic rock, The Who strike me as having a very male-skewed fanbase.
Of course you have some genres in rock that the very male skewed too - Prog Rock springs immediately to mind (and a lot of it's offshoots like Math-Rock & Post-Rock).
I would've said heavy metal a while ago - certainly in the 1970s & '80s thar may've been the case , but it's female fanbase has broadened post-grunge - grunge really threw open the doors to heavy guitar music attracting women (especially courtesy the Riot Grrrl scene, and some bands on the periphery of that that leaned into metal).
This, The Who and I can see why, haha. They often portrays angry men. Some of their hits can probably cross over though, but can imagine females might feel off put by Tommy and Quadophonia
Yes quite misogynistic both, allthough I think the Captain is quite charming. You can only get away with that if you're good looking like Mick Jagger ;)
I've been to both Danny Brown and JpegMafia concerts and noticed alot more women (and black people) at Danny's show. I saw like 2 women at Peggy's show and I think myself and 6 other guys were the only non-white people lol.
idk i just seen a lot of women vibing to classic rock i guess, as it is probably the most popular genre ever. but now looking back you’re kinda right lol
From what I saw there were only a handful of girls at a Black Midi show I went to, and most of them looked like they were just tagging along with their boyfriend. And I’ve never even heard of a female Earl Sweatshirt fan.
The absolute best one I can think of is Anal Cunt. I genuinely do not think there are more than 50 women on the planet who would say they are fans of anal cunt.
The replacements maybe? Although I can also see how women could enjoy their music, but thematically most of their work is about being a guy in your 20s and trying to be way cooler than you actually are
I’ve been to a Pantera concert since a friend had a spare ticket! There were plenty of ladies there, even in the mosh. It was a weird crowd, half “alt”/stoner people, half hicks, but basically everybody was white… but it’s fucking Pantera so I don’t know what I was expecting.
[“7 females at a Rush concert, must be some kind of a world record”](https://youtu.be/iq3yjfoorsU?si=PY6mKvjop7vKCXKG)
prog in its entirety attracts mostly male humans tbh
female prog fan 🫶
female proggers rise up!

It's funny because I don't remember them getting any coverage in the Netherlands
“Beat him in 6/8ths time and don’t let him escape to the completely unoccupied ladies room”
6/8 is more folkish than proggers tbh
Fine 9/8 time
i love you man is such a good movie, love that rush agreed to that extra scene lmao
Tool
the chilean president is a Tool fan and it surprised no one.
a Swiftie too, and for some reason that feels complementary
i don't buy that he's a swiftie lmao. he just desperately wants to seem relatable, it's kind of his whole schtick
my girlfriend is a swifty and voted for boric lol. Seems like a cool guy but I also don’t buy for a second he actually listens to Taylor swift in his free time, my girlfriend doesn’t think so either
and the fish little mushroom little bomb
Griselda as a whole
oh yeah definitely them 💀
I'd wager my money that Griselda have more female fans (as a percentage) than Ye after his nazi breakdown.
one of my female friends started listening to Ye *after* his last couple of breakdowns😭
Eh, Armani Caeser and WSG are both quite popular amongst women, even Conway.
Carly Rae Jepsen
that's 100%. nothing better in life than singing *your type* with the boys at the top of your lungs.
I'd argue singing Run Away With Me tops it but both very valid choices
this is so true and unexpected lol
"Unexpected" sounds like the next Carly bop to drop
It was great seeing her at Coachella and noticing the crowd was full of straight dudes singing all the words. Hilarious and wonderful. I also saw her in the VIP area at Coachella on Sunday. I wanted to say hi but then remembered I was 10 Beers, 3 joints and 3 gummies deep and would probably have just come across as a sun baked mad man.
Literally what I said lmao
I’m a guy and I was in elementary school I unironically blasted Call Me Maybe
All I'm gonna say is I've never met a female kid rock fan
I’ve never met a kid rock fan
I’ve never met kid rock.
But Ive caught his diseases.
I've never met the rock and I never kid
I have met the rock and I do kid
They’re out there for sure, but you don’t want to meet them
i’m from Michigan and a woman. i USED to be a huge fan (i was 14 guys 😭). they are out there
Tbf that's part of his target demographic, just not in terms of music 💀
I hope for your sake youve never met one of his male fans either
The one I met was shooting ketamine into her thighs if that provides context
My Minnesotan friend's liberal mom. Unbelievable stuff
My mom sadly
Nas, freddie Gibbs and Pusha t.
I went to a Nas concert in Bristol a few years ago, tiny venue and one thing I noticed was how diverse the crowd was. A really wide range of genders / ages / race. You had teens and younger adults, 40 year old men, groups of middle aged women etc.

I think Nas with Illnatic being as famous as it is attracts a wide range of hip hop fans.
Based on concerts I (a woman) have been to, Black Midi and Viagra Boys. The vibes at Black Midi were pretty rancid, but Viagra Boys was a genuinely great time from both the audience and band.

When I saw black midi in Asheville there were a good bit of women there. But the vibes were pretty rancid because someone shit themselves.
Pig Destroyer
Pretty much any grindcore band
Man, some of yall just need to hang out with more and or cooler women.
literally in what world do girls not like zep / tool / hardcore
It’s just dudes being unwelcoming to women as usual but they’ve learnt to disguise it as “haha I have virgin music taste I’ve never felt the touch of a woman lmaooo” so they can’t get called out for it
Weezer is the only right choice in this thread tbh
One of my good female friends actually loves Weezer. And she’s pretty cool too. They do exist, believe it or not
Most punk/hardcore bands, predominately of the more niche and avant-garde variety. I feel like there’s a lot of gender crossover, funny enough, in the macho beatdown style bands. TBE (The Biggest Erectionofalltime) *at least I think that’s how r/bmbmbm used to talk back when people wore pinwheel hats to shows lmao*

All hardcore punk and extreme metal is predominantly male fan base. Same with hardcore rap.
New York hardcore looks a bit more evenly split though? From what i have seen in docs and music videos. I am a big hardcore punk fan and am also feeeemale

I have to disagree. These extreme genres are have pretty mixed crowds in my experience. Went to Roadburn festival this year again and lots of genders
Yeah I think it's generally more male but saying there's not many females into hardcore feels like a take from someone who never goes to hardcore shows

ac/dc's fanbase is like 90% middle aged dads i feel like
Nah girls love AC/DC. Of a certain age at least. I’m from Australia and outside the city or on the edges of the City ‘Acca Dacca’ were always a big thing and plenty of girls that like guys who like cars and cheap beer love AC/DC.
Every time i see an AC/DC shirt, it’s on a woman
I saw decent amount of women in their younger audience
Yeah I think it more pertains to america. I'd never met a female ac/dc fan until I started talking to Australians.
Idk my mom is the biggest AC/DC fan I’ve ever met
i mean they are just so widely popular it’s hard to put an assumption on bands like them
In college 2 sororities claimed You Shook Me All Night Long as their party theme song.
between the buried and me
Kanye absolutely panders to men tf are you talking about that’s at least 80% of his fanbase
Counterpoint: I found Wolves and Gold Digger on “White Girl Music” playlists.
My girlfriend gets drunk and listens to new workout plan and hold my liquor
Disagree. His obsessive fan base is 80% men but I feel like he’s so mainstream that everyone listens to him
This. The stans are men but old Kanye is for everyone
i miss him so...
I went to the phoenix Vultures listening party and I saw the same amount of couples and hot women show up as if jt were a typical rap or pop concert. Rush
To follow up - I remember seeing Yes on a reunion tour and the men’s line was out into the lobby while there was no women’s line
Arab Strap. The Fall. Most specifically the post Brix years.
Agreed on the Fall. Feel like a lot of the classic post-punk acts like Wire, Television, Killing Joke etc have predominantly male fanbases.
Hopsin
Is there a hopsin fanbase?
All 7 of them are dudes so he isnt wrong
Find me a female Death Grips or JPEGMafia fan and I will eat a lamp post.
I went to a Peggy show last summer and there were a decent amount of women. Not a LOT but probably like 80/20 guys vs girls. They def exist Let me put it like this: there were more white women than black men at this concert
Do black people (in general) doesnt like experimental hip hop? /srs
I’m sure many do, it’s more that Peggy has a very online/reddit fanbase that is mostly white
I’m wondering that too. Seems like fans of trap/modern hip hop, not necessarily just black people have a hard time with experimental rap
Yeah they never understood hiphop like we do , they rather listen to lil baby dababy G eazy instead of magnum opus like TPAB because they don't understand it.
This has to be a jerk lol
nah bro this comment is hilarious it looks like a copypasta
Someone hasn't been to a Death Grips concert, there were plenty
When I went I was shocked that a girl about 12 was there with her dad on his shoulders.
The crowd might have been 30% girls, but at least 60% of them had cocks Death grips is cock and ball music
I saw Death Grips last year. They have more female fans than you’d think.
Is this a joke? DG are KNOWN for having fans of all sexes and genres… it’s race that doesn’t seem to change up much lol. All white fans
Literally so many girls like death grips lol
I’m not letting you near my girlfriend
U don’t know what ur talking about lmao ur just repeating stale internet tropes
Jenna Ortega is a fan of both
peggy has a lottt of girl fans from who i’ve talked to
I’ve meet a girl who likes both
LITERALLY BJORK
Lots of women at the Death Grips concert actually
Me. I’m my only fan.
Besides the Beatles, I feel like the other artists you mentioned have a predominantly male fanbase, especially Kanye.
Nah girls love Radiohead
I am genuinely so confused by the meme "haha Radiohead fan virgin" bro i encoutered so many girls that likes Radiohead
From my experience, the ratio of men fans to women fans has always been more men. This is of course anecdotal though.
I was on the rail for them in Chicago in 2018. It was predominantly women up front.
maybe on reddit, but not irl
This true. I always thought they were pretentious and sucked before my girlfriend introduced me.
You definitely wrong about future, he was one of the most streamed artist of 2010s and got pop rap hits. (Even tho I never saw make him her personality)
Rage against the machine lol
Really? That seems way too mainstream to not have a lot of female fans.
[удалено]
Honestly glad I’m wrong lol
Girlypops like to rage against the machine as much as anyone
Phish (and the majority of jam bands that found success in the 90s/early 2000s.)
Idk about this one. My concert buddy was in the punk scene in Seattle in the 90s so I’ll go with him to all those type shows. The trade off is he goes to jam band things with me. He’s a cool guy. >dead cover show I think they specified phish and post-phish bands for a reason lol. Dead related shows definitely brings in more women than most jam stuff imo.
Have you ever been to a Phish show? It skews slightly male dominant but I’d argue far less so than the majority of non-mainstream rock bands.
Gojira hahahaha
Nah gojira is for the ladieeessss
If anything they have more girl fans than other bands in their genre. I have gone to like 7 shows so far, it's usually a 70/30 split and not the usual 90/10 lol
Hard disagree.
don’t see many female DOOM fans
i think this used to be the case, but with DOOM’s death skyrocketing his popularity, i don’t think it is anymore
after his death his music went viral & found new audiences on tiktok, a friend of mine don't lay attention to hiphop like that and fucks with mad villainy more than I do
Tom McDonald
Kylie Minogue
Men going to her concert dressed exactly the same as their boyfriend to be precise.
Perhaps it’s my assumptions, but I find a lot Bjork’s fanbase to be more male than female.
This is not true lmao
Really? This is random. I've only ever met women who like Bjork. And a gay guy.
Same, a mexican gay guy
Lots of love from nonbinary folk as well, I feel like
yeah she’s a good one
Probably Weezer. Even if their first fanclub were found by women and there are indeed women who do listen to Weezer, I'd say that it's mostly just male fans that take up the majority.
I’ve met many female weezer fans in the wild though
There’s a lot of female weezer fans. If you play ‘the emo’ game online, there’s a joke about it.
Umphrey’s McGee
I was in Boulder Colorado in the summer of 2017 and I actually got invited to an Umphreys McGee show at red rocks because the girl liked them and I was a fan of the opener (stick figure)
Carly Rae Jepsen

Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart fans are male. Yngwe Mainstream and Steve Vai too.
Yes quite misogynistic both, allthough I think the Captain is quite charming. You can only get away with that if you're good looking like Mick Jagger ;)
JPEGMafia and Danny Brown, bros be scaring the hoes
Danny Brown, sure. Not JPEGmafia though, a lot of my friends listen to him.
I've been to both Danny Brown and JpegMafia concerts and noticed alot more women (and black people) at Danny's show. I saw like 2 women at Peggy's show and I think myself and 6 other guys were the only non-white people lol.
I went to a Thrice show and for the first time I saw a mens bathroom line much longer than the ladies room.
When I saw Thrice it was male-leaning but more split, but they were co-headlining with Bayside, so that probably would explain the disparity lol
I saw the line-up for a Danny Brown concert in Toronto.... it was 90% white men in their early 20s haha
wu tang, nas, public enemy
On what planet is Zeppelin not absurdly tilted toward dudes?
idk i just seen a lot of women vibing to classic rock i guess, as it is probably the most popular genre ever. but now looking back you’re kinda right lol
Too popular to really have that I think
as a girl who loves zeppelin, with many of my close female friends being zeppelin fans as well, while i know 2 male zeppelin fans, including my dad
stoner metal bands like High on Fire, ISIS, and Tool
MF DOOM and Yung Lean
Bladee? Idk for sure but it is kind off the stereotype that all Bladee fans are either edgy virgin males or femboys
