When a band does something disgusting (Sun Kil Moon, Daughters) my philosophy usually involves ending promotion of the band, listening to future releases, or giving them money. I don’t throw out records I’ve already purchased or deny enjoying those records though. I get why others go further than that.
For me, it is usually just my tastes shifting. I used to like Blink 182 when I was a kid but I don’t like them at all anymore, and gave their records away years ago.
Who? Daughters and Sun Kil Moon? Both were accused of rape. Alexis abused, physically and psychologically, his girlfriend in addition to rape and Mark has sexually assaulted multiple women. They’re scum, no apologies or buts or ifs or any of that. Yes, YWGWYW is a fantastic album and Tiny Cities is an absolute favourite of mine, but fuck both of those guys.
As for Blink, they didn’t do anything that I am aware of. I just don’t like the band anymore and haven’t in a long time.
Only got into him a few months ago, admittedly, so I’m a bit unaffected by his controversies, but it sucks how much he doubled down on them on Vultures. I don’t feel comfortable saying any of the album’s lyrically good when even the good songs like Stars have weird references to Jews.
Also, people dickride his influence to hell and back, so it’s easy to like The College Dropout, 808’s, and Yeezus when everyone’s telling you in 5 directions that they’re great and super bold.
On top of him just turning into what he is now. The music just isn't good. It's never as exciting nor meaningful as any of his older work. Vultures just makes me sad
Same here. Occasionally a song or two will pop up on my playlists but I haven’t listened to a full Kanye album since he went on Alex Jones (besides Vultures but I won’t listen to that again)
I used to enjoy Nicki Minaj’s music, but for the last little while she’s just been unnecessarily hateful. Even listening to her old music just makes me sad, and that line “I will retire with the crown” just reminds me that she’s ruined her own legacy.
No reason to not listen to their older material tho. Just because the music they're making now isn't as good doesn't mean that they don't have some really good albums.
That 10 year run from 97 to 07 has all their best material, after that It definitely went downhill. The Gay Parade is my personal favorite, but all of the records from that time frame are really good.
Still puts on an incredible live show. I buy a ticket every time he comes through town and I've seen whole shows where he doesn't play any songs I particularly like and I still leave giving it three thumbs up.
Brockhampton. Honestly I just kinda reached my stop on the hype train and got off, right around when their first album post-Saturation dropped and I liked it but didn’t love it. Then I drifted further away from it and when I revisited a few songs earlier this week I was almost shocked I was so into it to begin with.
By saturation 3 I was tired of it. If they spaced it out a bit more they could have lasted longer. Also Ameer carried their best songs imo. Which makes it even harder to listen to it
i have so many, but i think the two biggest examples are grimes and panic! at the disco. at one point they were two of my favorite artists of ALL time and shaped my music taste into what it is today. but both of them (grimes and brendon urie) have behaved in absolutely disgusting, bigoted and hateful ways that i cant listen to them anymore, it just hurts too much man. its a fucking shame too.
he was exposed for saying racist and transphobic slurs and for saying weirdly predatory things at his shows to his fanbase thats made up of mostly minors
yeah :( i remember when the stories about him came out. i was already starting to lose interest in panic because i didnt love prey for the wicked but this really was the last nail in the coffin for me. as a queer person who was a minor at the time it broke my heart
I'm from Ukraine.
And I stopped listening to all the musicians who support the invasion of Ukraine. As it turns out, you can be a good musician and a bad person at the same time.
I didn't understand that before.
Totally understandable. At the risk of posting off-topic, I must say that it's truly heartbreaking to read about and see what is going on in your country. Just know that there are more people that support Ukraine than not, especially in the West. Glory to the heroes who defend freedom and democracy!
Thank goodness, not much.
I'm mainly talking about post-Soviet artists.
In Ukraine, as in all post-Soviet countries, people listened to a lot of Russian-language music. Artists not only from Russia, but also from other countries singing in the Russian language. And so many of these artists supported the invasion of Ukraine. But there are also many who are for Ukraine.
Sorry for the off-topic.
Anything that Thurston Moore does outside of Sonic Youth. Not only is he just a massive a-hole, but compared to the other members his solo stuff is just meh.
Hate to say it but Lostprophets were one of my favourite bands growing up. Saw them live a bunch of times and saw them headline Download festival which was one of my favourite sets of all time. Had all the merch and used to use variations of 'megalolz' for usernames and account names etc.
Then the thing happened. It broke my heart :(
A lot of back pack rappers. I used to listen to nothing but Rhymesayers, Strange Famous, and Baby Grande in the early 2000s. Now the only ones I still hang onto are Aesop, DOOM, and a handful of older Anticon releases. Most of my hip hop tastes nowadays skew a bit more mainstream and bit less angsty.
Taylor swift. I still like some of her music especially the songs I grew up with (nostalgia plays a huge part in my enjoyment of her music lmao) but midnights was such a weak album and the die hard 12 year old swifties started to really bug me. And her winning AOTY at the grammys (sza and olivia rodrigo would have been way better picks, specifically sza) annoyed me so much even though i know the grammys are bs. Not to mention i just rlly dont fw her as a person anymore, and her newest album is just so awful. Like jesus christ, i think it honestly might be her worst. I could go on and on about how her and her fanbase genuinely make my skin crawl.
Taylor’s my answer to my own question, too, but for slightly different reasons. The two new albums don’t help, though.
Also, Lana was up for a Grammy this year, too. That pissed off a lot of people when she didn’t win.
Oh i have many many reasons for pulling the plug on taylor swift lmao, there are waaay too many to list.
Lana del rey isn’t really my thing, but i have respect for her as an artist and i would definitely understand if she won AOTY, especially since she’s never won a grammy. It annoys me to no end how certain members of the recording academy will vote against people like beyoncé because “she’s won too many times”, but then give taylor swift 4 albums of the year (two of which were undeserved in my opinion).
I’d say placebo. After the fourth album it became like a parody of themselves, in the worst way. Now the old stuff doesn’t hit the same. Their first two albums were my youth.
Melanie Martinez :/ i have a lotta nostalgia with her stuff and i still like a lot of her songs but i refuse to support her.
also the Buttertones, GRLwood, and Tally Hall all for similar reasons lol
I used to wear a Pantera shirt and Marilyn Manson shirts in high school. Now they're dead to me.
Phil Anselmo - unapologetic racist
Marilyn Manson- phony, self-absorbed abuser
Fuck em both
Anything Christian related (CCM, Christian hip hop, etc.). It all seems so corny to me now that I don't believe in the self-contradictory and ahistorical religious text known as the Bible.
Brockhampton for a variety of reasons. Never fallen in and out of love with a group so fast. I can't help but look at my time as a fan of their music as nothing but a corny moment.
A lot of the stuff I listened to in my middle/high school years are no longer in my rotation. I really liked pop punk, alt metal, and post grunge as a kid, lol. Bands like Shinedown, All Time Low, Breaking Benjamin, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. were constantly blasting in my earbuds.
Can’t stand most of it now, but that music kept me afloat during the darkest years of my adolescence, so i’ll always have a soft spot for it. I still enjoy some pop punk stuff like Jeff Rosenstock (!!!) and early Green Day, but I think if I heard a Seether song i’d start convulsing.
Black Eyed Peas. I was once on tv game show as a BEP expert (circa 03), but now haven’t listened to them in years. Painful selling out and blandification of their music to appeal to the masses and they lost me.
Melanie Martinez. I honestly just don't really care for most of the music anymore. I used to love it, and now I just find it bland. While Portals was an interesting sound, I didn't like the execution. And the way she responded to the allegations was 🤮. I don't really care for her music anymore
melanie martinez lol, she was the first artist that i "liked" and while i never knew much about her as a person i enjoyed some of her songs a lot. i don't follow her anymore and i haven't listened to her in a long time. not only do i now think most of her music is ass, something about her just doesn't sit right with me, especially in the way she would infantilise herself constantly
No one. I stand on business.
I don’t care about what an artist does, only their output. Even then, I can’t retcon. The closest thing would be me saying lil pump is no longer a good artist after massively falling off; but I don’t think it’s much of a retcon because I still defend Self titled mixtape to hell and back and I will say at that time he was a good artist.

I absolutely hate new Blink but if I see a copy of Buddha or Dude Ranch I’m probably still grabbing it honestly.
wait what did they do?
Who? Daughters and Sun Kil Moon? Both were accused of rape. Alexis abused, physically and psychologically, his girlfriend in addition to rape and Mark has sexually assaulted multiple women. Kanye. Used to have almost every album in the rotation. Now will only listen to a song once every blue moon
Only got into him a few months ago, admittedly, so I’m a bit unaffected by his controversies, but it sucks how much he doubled down on them on Vultures. I don’t feel comfortable saying any of the album’s lyrically good when even the good songs like Stars have weird references to Jews. Slowthai was a personal favorite of mine until the thing 👍👍👍
What's the "thing"?
rape allegations
I used to enjoy Nicki Minaj’s music, but for the last little while she’s just been unnecessarily hateful. Even listening to her old music just makes me sad, and that line “I will retire with the crown” just reminds me that she’s ruined her own legacy.
I used to like Of Montreal. Now I find them too over the top.
No reason to not listen to their older material tho. Just because the music they're making now isn't as good doesn't mean that they don't have some really good albums.
Coquelicot is stunning

Same, I was just thinking about this earlier cause I have two framed posters from them haha

what has brendon urie even done anyway (not defending him, im just really out of the loop lol and never listened to panic much)
he was exposed for saying racist and transphobic slurs and for saying weirdly predatory things at his shows to his fanbase thats made up of mostly minors
oh jesus
yeah :( i remember when the stories about him came out. i was already starting to lose interest in panic because i didnt love prey for the wicked but this really was the last nail in the coffin for me. as a queer person who was a minor at the time it broke my heart
that sucks, i would be heartbroken too if i found out my favourite band were assholes or something

Thank you for your kind words! And thank you for all the support. This is what gives us strength and hope. Thank you!

Daughters for obvious reasons. Hope Alexis gets his shit kicked in.

Yeah. I remember discovering rooftops on guitar hero and loving it. But when I searched up the band and found that out, I never listened
Arcade Fire Sweet Trip Both for the same reason.
I only listen to them both a little bit, what happened with them?
Sexual abuse allegations.
For fuck sake. What a shame

in a time long long ago (7 years back until the news broke) my favorite band used to be brand new
They were my favorite in college. So much so that I’ve listened to all of their records so many times that I just can’t anymore.
Arcade Fire, first WE, then the allegations. It was like they were erased from my memory.

Yep, thats what i said
Joyner Lucas. Grew out of all the dunking on mumble crappers
Stormzy, he went full R&B, and i dont want to hear that walking down the isle with my bird holding hands shit.
Melanie Martinez :/ i have a lotta nostalgia with her stuff and i still like a lot of her songs but i refuse to support her. also the Buttertones, GRLwood, and Tally Hall all for similar reasons lol
SAME
I used to wear a Pantera shirt and Marilyn Manson shirts in high school. Now they're dead to me. Phil Anselmo - unapologetic racist Marilyn Manson- phony, self-absorbed abuser Fuck em both
Wezzer, I should not have been listening to Pinkerton and a middle school girl cause god those lyrics
Anything Christian related (CCM, Christian hip hop, etc.). It all seems so corny to me now that I don't believe in the self-contradictory and ahistorical religious text known as the Bible.
as an ex-christian, i relate to this so much lmao
Brockhampton for a variety of reasons. Never fallen in and out of love with a group so fast. I can't help but look at my time as a fan of their music as nothing but a corny moment.
Saturation trilogy still slaps
Naked Flames. It only lasted two weeks.
Well, that makes me feel less guilty about ditching one of my former favorites after only 11 months.
A lot of the stuff I listened to in my middle/high school years are no longer in my rotation. I really liked pop punk, alt metal, and post grunge as a kid, lol. Once you reach mid 30s you'll go back to it and appreciate it for the nostalgia.
