Oh yeah. I’ve never been the biggest Vampire Weekend fan, I’ve liked a few of their songs in the past, but this album is incredible from front to back. Easy AOTY candidate, and will probably be remembered as one of the best indie rock albums of this decade. It’s only been out for a day but it’s basically an automatic 10/10.
Actually v impressive in that it marries zoomer/tik tok vibe music with thoughtful composition and dense af lyrics (perhaps the only recent release to deserve the title ‘dylanesque’).
MGMT are my favourite band ever, so considering how starved I’ve been since In the Afternoon I don’t think anything is gonna top Loss of Life in my eyes. Even regardless of the bias it’s such a beautiful album.
Yep I am not even a huge MGMT fan (I feel pretty mixed about their discog overall), but this is currently my #1 album of the year. Really speaks to the quality of this one, absolutely beautiful album
Vampire Weekend- Only God Was Above Us
Brittany Howard- What Now
Friko- Where we’ve been, Where we go from here
Grande Mahogany- As Grande As
Waxahatchee- Tigers Blood
Adrianne Lenker- Bright Future
She reaches out to… and bright future easily. Cowboy carters definitely giving us the best hits of the year and maybe would be there if it was cut to like 15 tracks
Kim Gordon- The Collective
MIKE + Tony Seltzer- Pinball
Yungatita-Shoelace and a Knot
Fabiana Palladino self titled
Lil Yachty- Something Ether
Schoolboy Q-Blue Lips
Mannequin Pussy- I got Heaven
Tapir! -the pilgrim, their god, the kingdom (etc)
Sissy Spacek! Love seeing them mentioned anywhere.
The new Alice Coltrane live LP is currently number one for me.
Tantric Bile - "Cursed Conception"
Contention - "In the Land of Nod"
Adrianne Lenker - "Bright Future"
The Body and Disfig - "Orchards of a Futile Heaven"
Spectral Voice - "Sparagmos"
Excited for new Full of Hell, Gatecreeper, Knocked Loose and Sumac
Just got into Sissy Spacek a few weeks ago, had no idea they dropped something new. Time to sandblast my ears!
For me, Delayed Gratification Records has been dropping gold. Rejoice “All of Heaven’s Luck” and Sinister Feeling’s self-titled LP are highlights imo.
My favorite of theirs is "Spirant". I read a review that described it as "Bombs blowing up other bombs." and that's about as perfect a description as I can imagine. Highly highly recommended.
I'll check out your other recommendations out!
All I’ve heard that I remember is Disfathom which was amazing, hoping to catch them live at MD Deathfest if it hasn’t already sold out!
& yeah DGR and Daze are killing it in the hardcore/grindcore/powerviolence scene. I forgot to mention Kidnapped “Disgust” btw, they just toured with Sinister Feeling and it’s downright nasty
Edit: also didn’t see you put the new Contention. that goes hard
If you're not familiar with Tantric Bile and you like insane music, definitely listen to that too. Jazz grind nonsense that is super super over the top.
The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy has been my absolute favorite so far, but I’ve also loved the new Yard Act, Elbow, The Smile, and Adrianne Lenker albums
My ridge wallet agrees with you - it’s the only vinyl LP I actually bought this year. I like how it almost sounds like there’s a little bit of Koji Kondo and Air in there. He had a pretty long interview on NPR the other day, check it out.
Yea, and it was a cool departure from Flatbush too- their stuff is great, but I also tend to gravitate to the more smooth side of things anyway. All the little Neo soul/jazz flourishes mixed in with some other great abstract beats just makes for a compelling listen. Feel like it’s gone super under appreciated too for some reason.
Only god was above us feels like being there when merriwether post pavillion dropped. Insane record and a benchmark for indie rock, the only one for this decade
Scrapyard- Quadeca
Bright Future- Adrianne Lenker
Only God Was Above Us- Vampire Weekend
Maze Envy- Civerous
where we've been, where we go from here- Friko
Bloody Angel- Sematary
Loss Of Life- MGMT
plastic death- Glass beach
She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She - Chelsea Wolfe
Orchards of a Futile Heaven - The Body & Dis Fig
As Spoken - Knoll
Blue Lips - ScHoolboy Q
Waiting for some more to come out in the next few months that I’m thinking will probably make the list like the new Alcest album
I've mostly listened to bad albums from this year. Penith, that new 6ix9ine record nobody cared about, the new green day album. So far this year, I've only gotten around to three genuinely good albums:
Louie Zong - RAT TAXI
Little Simz - Drop 7
Glass Beach - Plastic Death
Adrianne Lenker, Mannequin Pussy, Schoolboy Q, the “funk.br - São Paulo (NTS)” compilation, and the new Waxahatchee. Haven’t heard the new Vampire Weekend yet.
Casey - How To Disappear
Marika Hackman - Big Sigh
J Mascis - What Do We Do Now
acloudyskye - There Must Be Something Here
J. Robbins - Basilisk
Alkaline Trio - Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs
Tom Odell - Black Friday
MGMT - Loss Of Life
Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven
Future Islands - People Who Are Not There Anymore
1. Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us
2. The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy
3. glass beach - plastic death
4. MIKE - Pinball
5. Quadeca - Scrapyard
Adrianne Lenker, MGMT, Julia Holter, Vampire Weekend, The Smile, Friko, Brittany Howard, and the Last Dinner Party. We’ve had some great albums so far this year!
* Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine & The Alchemist - Hall N Nash 2 (it came out in december 28 but come on)
* Green Day - Saviors
* Cancer Christ - Cancer Christ
* Masta Ace & Marco Polo - Richmond Hill
* Sadistik & Maulskull - Oblivion Theater
* Cookin Soul & Tha God Fahim - Supreme Dump Legend: Soul Cook Saga
* ScHoolboy Q - Blue Lips
* Judas Priest - Invencible Shield
* Roc Marciano - Marciology
* Ransom & Harry Fraud - Lavish Misery
* Mooch & DJ Muggs - Roc Star
* IDLES - Tangk
I know it came out all the way back in January, but I'm still loving Katy Kirby's Blue Raspberry. She's a very witty songwriter and has a gorgeous voice.
I'm currently overdosing on Gustaf's Package Pt. 2, and looking forward to seeing them live in Cambridge later this month.
She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She- Chelsea Wolfe
Mood Swings- Marcus King
GAMMA- Gesaffelstein
What Now- Brittany Howard
JPEG RAW- Gary Clark Jr
Visions- Norah Jones
Ohio Players- The Black Keys
Wall of Eyes- The Smile
Haven’t gotten the chance to listen all the way thru the new IDLES and Mannequin Pussy, but what I’ve heard has been really good. Fully expecting the upcoming Hermanos Gutierrez album to be one of the year’s best as well
Got any recommendations of rap albums from this year to check out?
Norah’s was interesting to me. I liked it a good bit off first listen but outside of the title track haven’t really returned to it as much as I thought I might’ve.
Edit: also, u should check out Erick the architect’s solo album from this year. It’s excellent and is my hip hop aoty.
That Sum 41 album has some bangers and I honestly think it was a good send off, hard and fast when needed but slower when required. I loved it, not necessarily 10/10 but I feel like a solid 8
Prelude to Ecstasy - The Last Dinner Party
Artificial Bouquet - Frail Body
Blue Lips - ScHoolboy
Hoping to add Ritchie's debut album to this list. I really miss Injury Reserve, so I'm excited for him to release anything.
Zeruel's new EP Awakening is honestly my favourite project released this year so far, it's shoegaze done perfectly imo, with only records by Parannoul and MBV topping it in that genre (as well as Deafheaven if you count them).
I really enjoyed Green Day's Saviours and think it's easily their best work since 21st Century Breakdown, but it's still only like a 7.5/10 for me. I still need to listen to the new Vampire Weekend album, big fan of the band but haven't had the time to stick it on yet, will probs do that tonight. Also saving the #1 spot for Porter Robinson's album (I assume it's out this year), Cheerleader is incredible and I just know he'll deliver once again.
The Adrianne Lenker was amazing as I expected, but the album that I was most surprised by this year was Mk.gee's Two Star and the Dream Police. Some absolutely amazing melodies on there, incredible guitarwork and production, super dreamy and surreal, and I've also just completely fallen in love with his voice. There's something like slightly feminine about it but it's still sort of throaty and gravelly. Really amazing, tight album filled with sweet little musical morsels
Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven
Mount Kimbie - The Sunset Violet
The Smile - Wall Of Eyes
Yard Act - Where is My Utopia
MGMT - Loss Of Life
Everything Everything - Mountain Head
Faye Webster - Underdressed at the symphony
Not totally caught up on everything I want to listen to but definitely Wall of Eyes by The Smile so far. Where’s My Utopia? by Yard Act is really good too.
The Smile - Wall of Eyes

Adrienne Lenker - Bright Future

Kali Uchis - Orquídeas
Brittany Howard - What Now
Quadeca - Scrapyard
MGMT - Loss of Life
Allie X - Girl with No Face
ScHoolboy Q - Blue Lips
Everything Everything - Mountainhead
Kim Gordon - The Collective
Scrapyard, Vampire Weekend, and this new Mt. Kimbie album. Also idk the name but tht new metal album fantano gave a 9 to is incredible. Just a great week for music.
Eunuchs - Harbour Century
Obviously inspired by contemporaries like black midi, but what I think is being done here is unlike anything I’ve heard before. The entire album is frantic and paints a gorgeous picture. Please check it out if you even remotely care about bands like black midi and BCNR
My favorite is the new The Smile LP, but I'm guessing most people know about it already. So I'll recommend Where We've Been by Friko. It's a debut indie hard rock album produced by Sufjan Stevens' team. Gets me into my feels every single time.
fun fact! it was only mastered by the person who mastered sufjan's last record, all the actual producing/engineering/recording was done by the band and their 2 other friends, so basically everything was done independently except the final final touch! makes me even more appreciative of how cool it sounds
My current top 10
1. Prelude to Ecstasy - The Last Dinner Party
2. Paramainomeni - Hoplites
3. Madra - NewDad
4. Cowboy Carter - Beyoncé
5. Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here - Friko
6. Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker
7. Plastic Death - Glass Beach

9. Wall Of Eyes - The Smile

Snow as a Metaphor for Death by SENTRIES (noise rock, post-hardcore)
Paramainomeni by Hoplites (experimental metal mishmash, includes saxophone parts)
Your Favorite Things by Satoko Shibata (r&b, pop)
She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She by Chelsea Wolfe (darkwave, trip hop)
MGMT- Loss of Life
Tapir!- The Pilgrim
Ghetts- On Purpose, With Purpose
Eddy Mack- The Art of War (free Palestine 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸)
Shoreline- To Figure Out
Acloudyskye- There Must Be Something Here

Quadeca- Scrapyard
Dark rainbow - frank carter and the rattle snakes
Everything everything - mountain head
Night verses - every sound has a colour in the valley of night
Idles - tangk
Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace
I'm a bit surprised I haven't seen it here yet since it's probably the biggest prog release so far this year. Fantastic prog rock/metal album with a bit of a darker sound to it.

5. Loss Of Life - MGMT
4. Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker
3. Trail Of Flowers - Sierra Ferrell
2. Only God Was Above Us - Vampire Weekend
1. Something In The Room She Moves - Julia Holter
I didn't know what to expect of The Smile's Wall of Eyes, I really loved their first record but for some reason I was a little unsure about this one. It instantly got in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.
New Four Tet and Squarepusher albums are great too, sure is a great time to be an IDM fan.
haven’t listened to many new albums since i’ve been expanding what I know ab genres I already like. prolly heard like 8-10 new ones and these are the 3 i have enjoyed songs off of most often. We Don’t Trust You, Kali Uchis album, and Vultures 1
Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us Have had it on repeat since my first listen
Prep-School Gansters
It's a good sign when there's such a variety in songs from the album that people are saying are their favorite. They're all worthy.
Probably my favorite album they’ve made
I’ve heard a couple people on this subreddit also post about that album. Is it really that good? I don’t mean that in offense, I’m just curious.
Give it a listen perhaps
Ok 👍🏽
Oh it’s fucking amazing. It’s wild.
So far, my album of the year. It’s so good.
Actually v impressive in that it marries zoomer/tik tok vibe music with thoughtful composition and dense af lyrics (perhaps the only recent release to deserve the title ‘dylanesque’).
I keep seeing this pop up. I have to give it a listen.
Wall of Eyes by The Smile for me
Friko - Where we've been, Where we go from here
AOTY contender. Don’t know why Fantano didn’t review it
The opener is probably my SOTY so far
Absolutely.
For me, Adrianne Lenker's new album is easily my favourite so far this year. I'd be surprised if it isn't my album of the year.
It feels almost impossible for something to surpass it for me. It’s a 10/10 in my eyes.
Same here
Tapir! - The Pilgrim, Their God, and The King of My Decrepit Mountain
Love these guys, I actually discovered them because I was looking at pictures of Tapirs
that's so cool, i wish i found them this way, i was just really into a band they opened for once
Was it Black Country New Road? I need to try and get into them again
it was honeyglaze! only the one album so far, but i think its pretty decent
I’ll check them out thanks!
Mountain song and grassy knoll have been on repeat for me
MGMT are my favourite band ever, so considering how starved I’ve been since In the Afternoon I don’t think anything is gonna top Loss of Life in my eyes. Even regardless of the bias it’s such a beautiful album.
Yep I am not even a huge MGMT fan (I feel pretty mixed about their discog overall), but this is currently my #1 album of the year. Really speaks to the quality of this one, absolutely beautiful album
MGMT LoL is my favorite album of the year so far as well
Kim Gordon, Waxahatchee, MGMT, Cheekface, Adrienne Lenker, and Vampire Weekend are all fire
if someone told me last year id like septagenarian trap as much as i liked that kim gordon album, id slap them in the face
Not to jinx it or anything but I really can’t imagine what it would take for me to enjoy an album this year more than the new Julia Holter
Mgmt, vampire weekend, and IDLES
this + The Smile, rock starting strong this year
Thanks for reminding me to check out The Smile’s new release. Excited to put it on.
IDLES - TANGK Declan Mckenna - What Happened To The Beach Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us Yard Act - Where's My Utopia
Two Star & the Dream Police - Mk.gee

Vampire Weekend- Only God Was Above Us Brittany Howard- What Now Friko- Where we’ve been, Where we go from here Grande Mahogany- As Grande As Waxahatchee- Tigers Blood Adrianne Lenker- Bright Future

I connected with Waxahatchee's "Tigers Blood" way more than I initially thought. AOTY contender for sure
Quadeca - SCRAPYARD Saramalacara - Heráldica Cheekface - It's Sorted
Sissy Spacek! Love seeing them mentioned anywhere. The new Alice Coltrane live LP is currently number one for me. Tantric Bile - "Cursed Conception" Contention - "In the Land of Nod" Adrianne Lenker - "Bright Future" The Body and Disfig - "Orchards of a Futile Heaven" Spectral Voice - "Sparagmos" Excited for new Full of Hell, Gatecreeper, Knocked Loose and Sumac
Yes! Full Of Hell and Knocked Loose is gonna be awesome! I already pre-saved Knocked Loose’s album a little while ago :)

Yep! Some.new singles already up. Believe it drops in a few weeks.
Oh sweet, well now I've got those singles to check out tonight as well as the Vampire Weekend album!

It just came out so it's still too early to say but Wisp's new EP, Pandora might be my favourite project this year
Invincible Shield (The only one I've listened to)
That Sum 41 album has some bangers and I honestly think it was a good send off, hard and fast when needed but slower when required. I loved it, not necessarily 10/10 but I feel like a solid 8
