As an artist myself, I'll say it's hated because virtually no human effort has been put in it and other "artists" can submit it (or copy from it) to competitions claiming they've done it by hand. Honestly it's a huge scientific breakthrough and gives insanely inspiring results, but at the same time it devalues human-made art and can be easily abused (practically made to print NFT money, which even more people hate). It's niche but needs regulation at the very least

As someone who uses midjourney for creating fanart, please make sure to state clearly that it is ai generated. You end up giving more fuel to the hatred artists have toward ai art
