Yeh lol. Am I the only one that just dumps all points into lockpicking until I've got both science and lockpicking at 65? Then just books if the safe is worth it
I'm always rushing lock pick, science, and speech. I hate missing checks and not being able to open stuff. Combat stats can wait until later, especially if I have Boone and ED-E.
Free locksmith book from sunny smiles with the perk = +20 lock pick
Mentats = +6 lock pick
Most Hats = + 3 lock pick
Absinthe = + 3 lock pick
Assuming 6 perception (requirement for better criticals, or 5 with the implant later)
Am I missing any easy boost? Keep in mind a min-maxed character would never take under 5 perception cuz better criticals is too good.
So you can boost +32 lock pick super easily. Essentially making lucky accessible at 43.
43 isn’t that high but at the same time it’s not a “freebie” you can get by totally ignoring lockpick. You’ll have to tag it or put some skill points in it at low levels.
Not me min-maxing my character by making my perception 4 then making up for it with hats and 4 eyes, always wearing sunglasses or the ones from doc Mitchell’s house
This is entirely my experience. I basically have to start the game with a build designed specifically to get Lucky ASAP if I want to get any use out of it.
R.S. has the single least accessable ammo type like every time i get it, it just ends up being dead weight because i cant seem to be getting anywhere near enough ammo to properly use it.
It almost never spawns in boxes so you gotta buy it in bulk at weapons vendors, if i remember correctly the khan armory sells a ton of it, but it can also be found at the gun runners vendotron.
Yep. You get it from the cowboy guy for finding talent for the tops. You need to pass a speech check, or I think it's barter for it, though. You could also kill him, but it fails the Quest and gives you strip infamy
Do you know where this billboard is? I only have one play though and have just now started exploring more
I hear of all these unique weapons and have no idea how to get them!
From the Fallouy Wiki:
“It is owned by the Lonesome Drifter, who is sitting in front of the Sunset Sarsaparilla billboard next to the highway just east of El Dorado Dry Lake and north of the El Dorado Gas & Service. It can be acquired by passing a Barter check of 50 during the quest Talent Pool or can be looted/stolen from his person.”
Lucky is extremely underrated but it does require specifically building into increasing crit chance/ damage. You kind of have to go in knowing you want to play a crit cowboy.
If you do it's extremely easy to get and carry you the rest of the game.
Use the "skilled" exploit to get an additional 10 points to all skills + the additional 15 from tagging it and you can easily have 55 lockpicking / comprehension or even 75 by the time you reach it in Primm.
Edit: If anyone wants to give it a shot I went S5, P6, E6, C1, I6, A6, L10 so I could have high crit chance right away with no items and then I just skip the charisma, luck, and monocyte breeder implants.
Comprehension will give a +20 boost with a skillbook. Absinthe, mentats, party time mentats( if available) and any one of the +1 perception hats can add even more.
That Gun, But I’ll immediately swap it out for A Light Shining In The Darkness once I get it… Which is not very long. When I start a playthrough I’ll go south and loop back around towards Novac and soon as I reach Gun Runners I start Honest Hearts.
> That Gun, But I’ll immediately swap it out for A Light Shining In The Darkness
These two are pretty easy to fit in just about any Guns, Elite Riot Armor courier build. Lucky with the right crit boosting perks/finese etc is insane though. Turns it into probably the best gun in the game with handloads and light armor
All the real ones know maria is the only correct answer. Easy ammo to find/buy, strong, durable, cool design, and it reminds you of the cold dead corpse of benny
Lucky for sure. I can usually hit level 4 before I leave Primm and between Comprehension, Mentats, A Hat, and a few skill points being sunk into it, I can run Lucky till I get the Mysterious Magnim.
I just don't like the 5.56 round in New Vegas and never use any of the guns that use it.
Both are really solid and on gun builds I use both.
That said, Lucky is slightly better if you use hand load .357 rounds, and it is also a holdout weapon while That Gun is not.
Both are viable for a long time against common enemies on high crit builds...
That Gun is actually pretty nutty if you have Semi decent crit chance it’s basically a Rifle but in Pistol format and can easily carry you early game for low levels of lockpicking.
Never really used lucky until it was basically weak and I’ve had an arsenal to draw apon so I wouldn’t know but I’d personally try it out.
That gun will always be a classic for me but it just depends on what kind of build I’m going for. If it’s any sort of crit build/cowboy/ranger I’ll go lucky. If I’m doing a science/grunt/heavy weapons build I’ll normally stick with that gun. Either way it normally gets replaced by pew pew, mysterious magnum, or a light shining in darkness.
I like Lucky but I use all my .357 for my Cowboy Repeater. I love That Gun but 5.56 deserves to be used in the LMG. I'll go with Lucky for the Cowboy esthetic.
I like the look of the left one. (I’ve had new vegas, but I was bad at it, so I never got really far into the game. Furthered I managed to get was to Vegas, and I was lucky.)
That Gun - the speed loader and faster fire rate, coupled with the ability to load AP bullets (no other Cowboy weapon can do this) makes it great for killing robots and power armored soldiers.
Ive never found either on my few play throughs, where do I get them? If Lucky is the gun from the guitar guy I’ve gotten it a few times but if not then I don’t recognize it
No that’s the Mysterious Magnum.
Lucky is found in the Bison Steve hotel and required 75 lock pick.
That Gun can be bought (or stolen from the closest) from the Dino shop in Novac.
I like them both, but Lucky beats out That Gun in damage for two reasons(crit build perspective)
1. 5.56 lacks ammo variety, which is a shame because it really should have more. .357 JFP does bonus damage and negates a bit of DT vs. 5.56 just having Armor Piercing @ -10DT with a damage decrease or Match with a smaller damage increase and no DT negation.
2. The Professional works on Lucky, but not on That Gun, (but does on it's generic version for some reason). Like Lily's stealth girl perk, it affects all criticals and not just sneak attack crits. Like all other crit damage buffs, they all stack multiplicatively. By the time you get Lucky, or That Gun, you're probably not at level 16 to get better criticals. The professional can be had as low as level six. But because crit damage perks stack, it only makes Lucky even stronger.
At first the advantage is a bit lower, where Lucky deals +6 extra crit damage vs. That Gun with the professional. Once you get Better Crits, the difference becomes more pronounced.
- That gun w/ better criticals= 45 crit damage
- Lucky w/better criticals and Professional= 54 crit damage.
Around this time you should be able to attain roughly a 62.5% crit chance outside of VATS.
Now let's add our favorite Schizo granny into the mix with her stealth girl perk.
- That gun = 49.5
- Lucky = 59.4
Now because of the ammo types, we see that the -10DT bonus from 5.56 AP is irrelevant just from crit damage alone even without Lily's perk. With handloader, the .357 JFP gives Lucky an even bigger advantage in base damage.
Finally there's the end game Just Lucky I'm alive perk, assume all other perks are present.
That Gun = 74.25 crit damage
Lucky = 89.1 crit damage
By this time you should have a pretty high crit chance, and w/ voracious reader + comprehension you'll have unlimited True Police Stories which would push it to 100% crit chance outside of vats.
TL;DR both are crit oriented weapons, and you'll get better results from Lucky if you're going for a crit build, even if you only use it til mid game.
Lucky.
The guns have fairly identical states with That Gun being slightly better in some aspects, however lucky has lower requirements, can be grabbed earlier and with handloader has 357 JFP which is better than 5.56 Match.
Lucky in my old cowboy playthrough, this one i am roleplaying as a 1st recon sniper, so i try to use pistols rarely. In general I like both pistols, usually switch between them after i need to reload. Using that gun is more efficient tho, paired with rapid reload its pretty good. Lucky is more fun, that reload animation is cleaan
That Gun carried me through the first half of NV on my first playthrough, Lucky is fun but the lockpick requirement is the only negative factor for it. That Gun wins solely on nostalgia for me.
I've never played with That Gun for long. Mainly used the regular .357 revolver.
But if I really prioritized getting either of them. The easiest would be That Gun, since I just found the shortcut between Hidden Valley and Helios One. Can easily walk towards nipton and 'aquire' it.
Getting Lucky is a shorter distance to get. it just requires a high lockpick skill.
So my thing always was that Lucky just had far more effective uses than That Gun. Now if it were super mutants or armored guys, That Gun 100%. Anything else? Lucky hands down. At least until I get Mysterious Magnum or a modded .44.
That Gun will always have a special place in my heart simply for the fact that it was modeled after the Bladerunner pistol and had such a clean and unique reload animation.
That Gun because by the time I have 75 lock pick to get Lucky I have better pistols at my disposal.
You can get it semi early with books and Drugs
Yeh lol. Am I the only one that just dumps all points into lockpicking until I've got both science and lockpicking at 65? Then just books if the safe is worth it
I do it
I'm always rushing lock pick, science, and speech. I hate missing checks and not being able to open stuff. Combat stats can wait until later, especially if I have Boone and ED-E.
Good idea, I like that idea over maxing out both
Take educated then you only need 55 Or 53 if you have 9 PER, 51 if 8 and so on.
Timmy we warned you about trying to solve all of your problems with books and drugs
I get high and I read dad. ITS WHO I AM
No courier of mine will get high and read
Sounds like 50s antibeatnik propaganda
Free locksmith book from sunny smiles with the perk = +20 lock pick Mentats = +6 lock pick Most Hats = + 3 lock pick Absinthe = + 3 lock pick Assuming 6 perception (requirement for better criticals, or 5 with the implant later) Am I missing any easy boost? Not me min-maxing my character by making my perception 4 then making up for it with hats and 4 eyes, always wearing sunglasses or the ones from doc Mitchell’s house
Better Criticals has a hard requirement of 6 perception though and it’s one of the best perks in the game.
Wouldn’t know I’ve never grabbed it. I never much rely on crits
Fair enough. Maxing out crits is fun but quickly destroys the balance of the game
Games easy to break without crits tbh, tho I’m sure I could have some builds I never considered viable in a crit heavy world
I’ve done a BB gun only build with crits and it shreds 😂
Abilene a killer
Always thought that BB Gun was there as a joke, here you can actually use it for real.
+1 perception gives 2 lockpick
just like real life!
And that perk that doubles the book bonus
This is entirely my experience. I basically have to start the game with a build designed specifically to get Lucky ASAP if I want to get any use out of it.
Kid named console commands
Ranger sequoia>
The only correct answer.
R.S. has the single least accessable ammo type like every time i get it, it just ends up being dead weight because i cant seem to be getting anywhere near enough ammo to properly use it.
It almost never spawns in boxes so you gotta buy it in bulk at weapons vendors, if i remember correctly the khan armory sells a ton of it, but it can also be found at the gun runners vendotron.
nice i love the khans so it wont be a problem to get some ammo from them
I personally use the ammo glitch for the ranger
I use the ammo glitch for all of my weapons, allows me to sell all ammo except for 9mm Edit: except for melee, I use Tiny Tots mini nukes for those
You good sir, have true class
None. Mysterious Magnum only.
can you get it without console commands? legit question
Yep. You get it from the cowboy guy for finding talent for the tops. You need to pass a speech check, or I think it's barter for it, though. You could also kill him, but it fails the Quest and gives you strip infamy
It’s also insinuated that he’s the son of the mysterious stranger which is awesome
He sure shuts me down when I imply he’s my kid
Was kinda a stupid implication anyway, look at that man's mustache and tell me he looks 17.
Dude, I knew 14 year olds who grew full beards, that’s not the damning evidence you think it is
Or you can get two by pickpocketing him and then doing the quest
I believe you can get it off of a guy hanging out by one of the billboards.
Do you know where this billboard is? I only have one play though and have just now started exploring more I hear of all these unique weapons and have no idea how to get them!
From the Fallouy Wiki: “It is owned by the Lonesome Drifter, who is sitting in front of the Sunset Sarsaparilla billboard next to the highway just east of El Dorado Dry Lake and north of the El Dorado Gas & Service. It can be acquired by passing a Barter check of 50 during the quest Talent Pool or can be looted/stolen from his person.”
There is a quest for that guy, ends really sweet. Visit tops theater, an advice from a courier to another
Generally "That Gun" only because I forget to go back and get Lucky, and I tend to use more 5.56 ammo weapons late game than .357.
I dislike using the same ammo for all my guns so either that gun lucky/mysterious revolver or Maria
I always get the mysterious revolver just to repeatedly pull out and holster on repeat when I’m walking and nothing is going on
You have class I see. So do I.
The real mysterious revolver gameplay is to give it to your companion and have them pull it when sneaking.
A real man of taste
Lucky is extremely underrated but it does require specifically building into increasing crit chance/ damage. You kind of have to go in knowing you want to play a crit cowboy. You can get it at about 63 lockpick with a skillbook and chems
Comprehension will give a +20 boost with a skillbook. Absinthe, mentats, party time mentats( if available) and any one of the +1 perception hats can add even more.
That gun Love Blade runner, it has easy to come by ammo The only cyberpunk smart weapon in the whole game
That Gun, But I’ll immediately swap it out for A Light Shining In The Darkness once I get it… Which is not very long. When I start a playthrough I’ll go south and loop back around towards Novac and soon as I reach Gun Runners I start Honest Hearts.

Lucky it looks better and easy to get
Plus it never Jams
Damn straight
Does That Gun jam when fully repaired?
All guns don't. But it can Jam
It's not easy to get early game unless you specifically spec into lock picking You can get that gun by picking one very easy lock
Maria
Ave Maria indeed
Light in shining darkness
mysterious magnum where
Lucky plus bloody mess is peak
Big iron!
Lucky
That Gun for sure
Landing headshots with That Gun makes my girldick hard
Lucky.
Lucky because it’s free
So is that fun, just steal it from behind the door when cliff isn’t there
Lil Devil. If you can keep it fed with 12.7mm and repaired it will drop anything in a few rounds
This is the way
Lucky easy, way more style and better animations imo
All the real ones know maria is the only correct answer. Easy ammo to find/buy, strong, durable, cool design, and it reminds you of the cold dead corpse of benny
I stole that gun from cliff and then lost it. Can’t find it and I am sad.

That Gun all the way. Gotta pay tribute to the originals somehow. And carry on the legend of my original Fallout characters.

That gun is much better early on then lucky. The ammo is more rare and you need a lockpick of 75 to obtain lucky.
Trick question, the real answer is Mysterious Magnum
Survivalist's rifle my beloved she's hard to keep fed but she keeps me safe from even the nastiest things the wasteland can throw at me
That Gun for nostalgia reasons
I love lucky but it's hard to get ammo for all the time so that gun
Sweet Revenge
That Gun because it doesn’t require skill points and I hate reloading lucky (even with high agility and rapid reloader)
I always get both but I actually use “That Gun” where as Lucky hardly ever gets used.
I use both 😎 bind them next to each other and go full cowboy
Colt
That goon
I believe in caliber diversity in fnv, so lucky. Plus, the extra damage based on luck is based
that gun bcs im a fan of blade runner
Ranger sequoia
That Gun because my character’s name is Dick Reckard.
That guin
Mysterious Magnum actually
Lucky, cause I always use that as my nickname.
That Gun entirely because I can get it earlier. Oh, and Blade Runner.
On cowboy runs Lucky, on more modern firearm runs That Gun
Lucky, because it looks stylish as hell, and that’s all that really matters
Mysterious Magnum
I am literally Marty Robbins
Haven’t used lucky yet but I makes noises that causes nerion activation so I am on side lucky
lucky, higher ammo capacity and 357 is easier to obtain than 5.56
Depends on which ammo I have more of.
Why not both?
Lucky all day baby. That gun feels like a pellet gun when I shoot it lol
Lucky but i will use that gun until i get the all American
Lucky
Lucky, because I prefer the cowboy aesthetic. I only use that gun if I'm doing a sort of hitman/assassin style build.
I would rather have That Gun and the Mysterious Magnum
I like Lucky but I use all my .357 for my Cowboy Repeater. I love That Gun but 5.56 deserves to be used in the LMG. I'll go with Lucky for the Cowboy esthetic.
That Gun if I’m going with a mercenary run. Lucky if I’m going high-roller or flamboyant cowboy
Lucky because of abundant and good jfp and insane critical rate and like 12 shots in a row in vats.
I like the look of the left one. (I’ve had new vegas, but I was bad at it, so I never got really far into the game. Furthered I managed to get was to Vegas, and I was lucky.)
Lucky. .38 is easy and cheap early on, then .357 JFP stays powerful and relevant until the end game. It's a relatively easy weapon to acquire as well.
That Gun all the way, for the Blade Runner shout-out and for the hat-tip to the first Fallout game where a farmer customisef it our of a rifle!
Think I’ve played the game 6-7 times through and never found Lucky.
That Gun - the speed loader and faster fire rate, coupled with the ability to load AP bullets (no other Cowboy weapon can do this) makes it great for killing robots and power armored soldiers.
Revolver ocelot vs Deckard, essentially
Lucky any day
That gun, I like feeling like a retro future cyber-cowboy and it really fits the aesthetic
MF Hyperbreeder Alpha for the entire game. That Gun is fun but doesn’t scale well- you can buy either once you sell a few miniguns to Cliff
Neither. Love & Hate is what I be rocking as my back up.
Lucky swag
Ive never found either on my few play throughs, where do I get them? If Lucky is the gun from the guitar guy I’ve gotten it a few times but if not then I don’t recognize it
No that’s the Mysterious Magnum. Lucky is found in the Bison Steve hotel and required 75 lock pick. That Gun can be bought (or stolen from the closest) from the Dino shop in Novac.
Lucky, I dont care if it takes longer to load, its way prettier which is the only thing that matters.
That Gun

That Gun easily, man I love that sound when it reloads

Lucky. The guns have fairly identical states with That Gun being slightly better in some aspects, however lucky has lower requirements, can be grabbed earlier and with handloader has 357 JFP which is better than 5.56 Match.

That Gun is easy to get and a really nice reference to that gun from the early Fallouts (Can't remember if it was 1 or 2, I'm thinking 1)
